Tom Petty is a very deep rabbit hole to explore. Tons of mega-hits and a phenomenal band as well from a musicality standpoint. "Learning to Fly", "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Free Falling", and "American Girl" would be some good ones to start with, but the catalog is extensive and filled with hits.
All greats, but Don't Come Around Here No More is what got me hooked on Petty and definitely my favorite. I also love, love, love You Got Lucky, which was a staple of early MTV.
The guitar player here is Mike Campbell, the rock guitarist with the best musical taste you will find. He absolutely never shows off - even though he could - instead he ALWAYS plays exactly what the song needs and no more, letting the singers take the spotlight. Mike was in the Heartbreakers for their entire run, but when they were on hiatus, Mike worked a lot with Don Henley of the Eagles on his solo stuff - including co-writing The Boys Of Summer, which is one of Henley's best solo songs. Of course Stevie and Don Henley also did a duet, and when Linsey Buckingham had to drop out of Fleetwood Mac, Mike Campbell replaced him on their recent tour. There's a whole lot of cross-connections between The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.
Back in the 80's I had a girlfriend that looked a little like Stevie naturally. She did everything she could to try to look like her from hairstyle to clothes. Obviously it didn't bother me much 😂 Many young women wanted to be her and young men wanted to be with her!
You might like Tom Petty in an amazing ensemble called the Traveling Wilburys. I tried to add in on the voting site but I couldn't get it to show up. It is Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan and Jeff Lynn. If you think Stevie and Tom respect each other and don't try to up stage each other this group will blow you away with talent and respect. Unfortunately 3 of them have passed away. It was such a blessing they could capture this magic in time.
Tom Petty and his guitarist, Mike Campbell wrote the song. Stevie Nicks is an amazing singer, and she asked Tom to write a song that they could work together on. She wanted so badly to join Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, but Tom never envisioned a female in the band. Also, that is Tom's band in the video...
@@Terri6868he did BUT DID SAY NO GIRLS !! She begged for years became good friends with him and his wife Always loved and respected his music. She was so excited when he told her he wrote a song for her she says she told him gimme gimme
I remember sitting under the stars with my portable radio on a summer night after midnight and hearing Stevie Nicks singing either "Dreams" or "Sarah." What I remember the most is that it felt like the song was echoing through the entire Universe while looking up at the Milky Way. It was incredible. Music was so important to us back then and I felt the huge power, depth and magic of her song.
Tom Petty is a MUST in my opinion. "Mary Jane's Last Dance", "Free Fallin'", "You Don't Know How It Feels", "I Won't Back Down", and many more! Btw, Stevie wanted to join the Heartbreakers, according to Stevie herself.
She wanted to join Tom Petty's band after leaving Fleetwood Mac, still unsure about her own solo career, but he told her there were no girls in the Heartbreakers! He helped give her career a big boost. This isn't their only duet, and Petty was always supportive of her career.
My best friend of 35 years and I saw her last year in Houston. We go see her every chance we get. She is such an amazing artist and she never disappoints. She’s 75 years old and still rockin’ the stage like the supreme Goddess of Rock and Roll that she is. ✌🏻❤️from Texas
Stevie’s Stand Back was inspired after she heard Prince’s Little Red Corvette. She called Prince and he came down to the studio played some keyboard parts on the song and left. True story she mentions it all the time.
IMO, Tom Petty does an excellent job of representing Americana or "heartland" type music. It's not his only style, but he feels iconic to me in that regard. "Mary Jane's Last Dance," "Runnin' Down a Dream," "Free Fallin;," "Learning to Fly," "You Got Lucky," "I Won't Back Down," "Refugee," "The Waiting," "American Girl," and more.
Tom Petty is a whole mood for me. Lyrics brilliant, instrumentation memorable, delivery one of a kind. My faves are Here Comes My Girl and Breakdown (which is my favorite live version)
Stevie Nicks' greatest skill is her ability to harmonize with anyone. My favorite duet and her solo vocal of all time, is on her duet with Kenny Loggins "Whenever I call you friend". Check it out
Tom Petty is an icon. Love his music big dive in And Stevie what can I say other than she is magical and fabulous. Few suggestions Stevie is absolutely fantastic with Gild Dust Woman and Sarah another wonderment. Keep going down the rabbit hole in both and you will understand why my generation had the best music ever 💙💕
Tom Petty was once approached about turning one of his music videos, Into The Great Wide Open, into a full length movie. He responded, "it already is". Tom Petty has an amazing catalogue of not just songs, but videos to go with them. The one I mentioned stars Johnny Depp.
I saw them at a benefit concert in LA back in the day. She did this duet with Tom and then Don Henley came out and she did "Leather and Lace" duet with him. Electric vibrations when she duets with great artists. Great reaction
Love them both! And, yes, you HAVE to check out more of Tom's stuff. I think my favorites of his is "Refugee", "Here Comes My Girl" and "The Waiting" - but there are a ton more! And you still need to continue with Fleetwood Mac and Stevie's own solo career!
This duet with Tom was on side A of the Bella Donna album. Side B featured another great duet with rock royalty - Leather and Lace with Don Henley. Stevie reciprocated the favor by appearing in a duet with Tom on his Hard Promises album (the song "Insider" - which is a killer track as well). In Tom's 30 anniversary concert DVD Stevie joined him for the entire concert singing backup but he let her take the lead on one of his songs - "I need to Know" which (again) she absolutely slays. I'll echo everyone else here - TP and the HB is a top notch legendary band. The writing duo of Campbell/Petty is as important to the post 1976 Rock and Roll era as Jagger / Richards and Lennon / McCartney was to the early Rock era.
So glad you have gotten to experience Stevie she is was and ever will be an icon. I hear many young reactors say the same thing about we don't get lyrics like this anymore. In my opinion it all has to do with how they had to make it then and now. These older bands by majority had to start a band that was good enough to get booked in a bar trying to make money. Their music had to catch the audiences and spread organically. Today you have a manager find people who are a look then get music to fit. The whole difference between actual talent and manufactured stardom
To add to Kevin's list: "Don't Come Around Here No More", "Refugee", "You Got Lucky", "Don't Do Me Like That", and my personal favorite "Breakdown". Another great duet with Stevie is with Don Henley, "Leather and Lace".
Yes! Tom Petty is Incredible. He died too young. All of his band mates are amazing also. The lead guitarist Mike Campbell has his own band called mike campbell and the dirty knobs and they are still touring. Do check out more!
This song from Stevie's first solo album Bella Donna, launched her solo career and proved she was more than Fleetwood Mac. Bella Donna was a great debut, and for my money this was the best cut. The first time I heard this song I immediately ran out to buy the album - yes, on vinyl. It's still in my playlists.😄
Tom Petty is an American poet. Hey wrote all of his songs and he had three decades of absolute mastery. His band is 100 percent first rate musicians. Take a deep dive.

I bought his greatest hit CD years ago and realized that I had been listening to him since the early 80s, his catalog is incredible, hit after hit, pick any song and you are off.

Stevie Nicks solo career is amazing too. I’ve been to Fleetwood Mac concert and they are great. Tom Petty is amazing too. Yes, Stevie is still touring. Billy Joel is touring with her.

I regret never seeing him in concert, so Stevie is my HERO so me and my bestie went October 4 2023 got in car in Michigan and drove to Buffalo New York WOW so so very happy we did she AWESOME dude! 75 years old now still got it and still Beautiful!
Stevie is an amazing talent and yes, one of the most beautiful women in rock. Love Tom Petty. You really should checkout some of his work. They are amazing together.
Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty were great friends for a long time.....Check out the following: Stevie Nicks - Edge of Seventeen - Talk to Me - Rooms on Fire - Leather and Lace - Stand Back - Rhiannon - Seven Wonders - Stand Back Tom Petty - You Got Lucky - Don't Do me Like That - Don't Come Around Here No More - Jammin Me - American Girl - Breakdown - Refugee
Definitely keep going with both of these amazing artists. You won't regret it. I've seen this video many times since it came out but I just noticed something this time. The past few years I've been watching a lot of vocal coach reaction channels like The Charismatic Voice and The Fairy Voice Mother and have learned to really appreciate human sound production. Anyway, what I noticed in this video was how close Tom was to his mic versus how far Stevie was from hers. I know the video is engineered and all but it did grab my attention. Tom has an iconic and recognizable voice 🥰 but he's not known for being a belter. Stevie can sing a phone book and hit you right in the feels. They both have catalogs that will impress you and definitely keep you updating that playlist.
Legendary Tom Petty….When Stevie was preparing her solo career, she told producer, Jimmy Ivene…”I want a Tom Petty sound” Top Petty picks: Refugee Last Dance with Mary Jane American Girl
Stevie's a badass. Swifties take note - while TS writes & records songs about her exes, Stevie writes songs about hers and performs them live with said ex accompanying her on guitar! (Not referring to Tom Petty here, but rather Lindsay Buckingham)
Oh my word Sebs! I found your channel yesterday and can not get enough of you experiencing the music I grew up with. Watching you experience these artists for the first time has brought tears to my eyes. Jackson Browne, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Linda Ronstadt, and Aaron Neville, it's a breath of fresh air to see a man of your generation appreciate the artists that encompassed my youth. I am glad I came here and subscribed and look forward to watching as more artists are introduced to you and a generation of people who have no idea who these icons are. BRAVO!!
First time responding to one of your Reaction videos - been LOVING the rush reactions. Don't have any experience with instruments or as a musician but I grew up with 70s and 80s music. Especially Rock n' Roll music. This is my reaction to your first pause and your questions, "should I be checking out more Tom Petty stuff." Stevie Nicks is my favorite female singer of all time and I believe you should check out more of her solo career. Tom Petty is a legend from that era of music and should check out more of his performances as well. Please forgive me if I am behind and you have heard all this before. I just think you would be doing yourself and your fans a big favor by checking out more songs from these two artists. Especially Stevie Nicks! Her voice is amazing.
I love this song and agree it's one of the greatest duets in rock music. However, I don't think it's the best song to introduce you to Stevie Nicks. She's an amazing songwriter! This always sounded more like a Tom Petty song than a Stevie Nicks song to me. Both artists are required listening! I look forward to you reacting to both in the future!
I saw Stevie here in Phoenix. She was touring with Billy Joel. She can still belt out a tune in spite of the fact she's 75. The pride of Phoenix. Tom Petty learned guitar from Don Felder, the guy who wrote the music for the Eagles hit, Hotel California.
This and "The Waiting" are the two Tom Petty songs that got me hooked on both performers back when they were released, and I'd still take either of those two songs over ANYTHING I've heard on the radio in the last few years.
You may want to also check out the Traveling Wilburys. They were a British-American supergroup active from 1988 to 1991. The members consisted of… Bob Dylan George Harrison (Beetles) Jeff Lynne (ELO) Roy Orbison & Tom Petty.
I like Stevie Nick's. Her voice and music is very calming and smooth. Tom Petty is definitely someone you need to check out. Have you heard, " Leather & Lace" with Don Henley of the Eagles? Great song.
Another great Stevie Nicks songs and then an even better collaboration with Tom Petty. Go ahead and make yourself a 'Classic Rock: playlist, but aren't there songs in your everyday type playlist that it would be so awesome to have epic songs like this pop up here and there? So, save it to both playlists. I love a good surprise when my everyday playlist is on and some GREAT song pops on and you are just digging it! Thanks for the reaction and so glad to hear about your respect for Stevie Knicks and your openness to checking out more Tome Petty.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers is definitely deep rabbit hole of songs to dive into ... He has so many great songs.. also check out his work as a "Traveling Wilburys"
Others have mentioned the friendship between Tom and Stevie and the relationship between his band and her. It's true, from the very start, Tom and the Heartbreakers had a "No girls allowed" rule in their band. Tom and Stevie became such close friends over the years that many assumed they were in a romantic relationship... they both have denied many times. Stevie and Tom worked together for years, not in a band, but collaborating together, giving each other advice on song writing... They were as close as a Man and a Woman can be without being romantically involved. But finally in 2006 Tom surprised her with a gift... here is her quote from an interview a few years ago.... "Tom made me a little platinum sheriff's badge that had 24-karat gold and diamonds across the top and said 'To Our Honorary Heartbreaker, Stevie Nicks,'" she said. "On the back it says 'To the Only Girl in Our Band.'" Stevie wore this pin for years, every time she performed on stage with Fleetwood Mac and as a solo artist. She also wore it at his funeral. She has said that her honorary pin has meant more to her than all her other awards. Her and Tom shared a very unique, professional and personal relationship based on mutual love, respect, and admiration.
Stevie is the Rock Goddess, inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, for Fleetwood Mac and a Songwriter induction for her prolific songwriting skills. Her outstanding solo career catapulted her even higher...she is timeless, ethereal, magical with a one of a kind mesmerizing voice... a true force of nature!!!
Tom Petty is regarded as one of the most prolific songwriters in history. I deeply appreciate his contribution to my life through his music. His lyrics spoke to all that is me ❤
Stevie Nicks is my goddess on earth. She was on tour earlier this year in my town and it broke my heart to not have the money for a ticket. All my cash was tied up for an out of state Home Free concert and I would have gladly canceled if I could have gotten my money back for seats in both of Lady Stevie's close venues. As to 80s music supposedly sucking...NO WAY! My playlist is still full of my 80s favorites -- Stevie and Fleetwood Mac, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Elton John, Aerosmith, Bronski Beat, Phil Collins...
It's a great story of how Tom gave this song to Stevie. Tom Petty is the GOAT and Mike Campbell has a knack for guitar solos that leave you wanting more.
Love this song! I grew up during the best years of rock. I’ve had a crush on Tom Petty my whole adult life, and a girl crush on Miss Stevie Nicks. Actually going to see her for the 4th time in about 6 wks!
This was a Tom Petty song that he passed to her. She hid her recording of the Belladonna album. A woman secretly recording a solo album. They needed a hit and Jimmy Iovine, both producer, convinced Petty to give her this song. It was her first solo hit.
Stevie is the definition of a Rock Goddess, without a doubt. And the track record to back it up! But Tom Petty ALL DAY. His double album greatest hits is completely crazy, so many amazing songs. And his lesser known work is full of gems. Close your eyes and pick one from his greatest hits!
Tom Petty had originally told Stevie Nicks she could record his song "Insider". Then he changed his mind. However you can find a few rare videos of Tom and Stevie signing Insider. Its a gem.
Saw Stevie Nick's a few years ago... she's one of my favorites (silver springs), which is my favorite. She has a whole story about her and Tom Petty. She hung around, hoping he would ask her on like crazy. And finally, it happened.
This song was a song for his band, but she mentioned wanting to collaborate. Tom offered this song. Stevie said that she had so much fun that she would’ve joined the heartbreakers band. She loved it!
Every Tom Petty song was a hit. He wrote this one.

My personal fav - Running Down a Dream. Perfect workout song!
I love Tom Petty! Especially Wildflowers and all the stuff he did with Thr Traveling Wilburys (epic group!!!)

I worship at the altar of Stevie Nicks, despite only discovering her in 1998 when I saw The Dance concert on PBS (“Silver Springs”… yes, please.)
These two together were magical! Very good friends in real life .
Legendary Tom Petty….When Stevie was preparing her solo career, she told producer, Jimmy Ivene…”I want a Tom Petty sound”
Top Petty picks:
Refugee
Last Dance with Mary Jane
American Girl
No one can do Stevie! She is a legend! Tom Petty was amazing! Definite classic from my youth! In love with 70’s and 80’s music!
Stevie's a badass. Swifties take note - while TS writes & records songs about her exes, Stevie writes songs about hers and performs them live with said ex accompanying her on guitar! (Not referring to Tom Petty here, but rather Lindsay Buckingham)
Try Leather and Lace. Stevie wrote it for Johnny and Rosanne Cash. They didn't use it so she recorded it with Don Henley.
Stevie, Tom Petty, both are absolutely legends. Tom Petty, Running down a dream" , Stevie, " gypsy, edge of 17"
Stevie Nicks. Inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame TWICE. Once with Fleetwood Mac & then by herself. One of my favorite women ever❤
BRAVO!!
This is actually a Tom Petty song she did duets with him and many others. Very good catalog of her own.
Putting together your own classic rock playlist would truly be a journey of discovery. There is a huge amount of great classic rock music. Go for it!
Beautiful woman, Beautiful Voice
Dude he's got tons of fantastic material!!! This is only the beginning fr. So badass
Tom said Stevie was an honorary Heartbreaker.
This and "The Waiting" are the two Tom Petty songs that got me hooked on both performers back when they were released, and I'd still take either of those two songs over ANYTHING I've heard on the radio in the last few years.
one of Stevie's duets which is favorite for me is Stevie and Don Henley's "Leather And Lace".
You may want to also check out the Traveling Wilburys. They were a British-American supergroup active from 1988 to 1991. The members consisted of…
Bob Dylan
George Harrison (Beetles)
Jeff Lynne (ELO)
Roy Orbison &
Tom Petty.
62 years old now and it's safe to say, I've had the hots for Stevie Nicks for well 50 years. I know it will never happen but, oh well.
Free Falling from tom Petty is one of my all time favs from him! LOVE Stevie!
Tom Petty is regarded as one of the most prolific songwriters in history. I deeply appreciate his contribution to my life through his music. His lyrics spoke to all that is me ❤
Stevie is easily one of the top five greatest female singers of all time. RIP Tom Petty. You Sir are a legend and missed.
This womans voice is the most soothing I have ever heard never fails to send chills down my back and my spirit to soar
She and Fleetwood Mac will blow your mind in the Midnight Special version of Rhiannon.
Love this song! I grew up during the best years of rock. I’ve had a crush on Tom Petty my whole adult life, and a girl crush on Miss Stevie Nicks. Actually going to see her for the 4th time in about 6 wks!
This song is one of those songs that just takes you back!! It is truly a Classic and Timeless song!!
This was a Tom Petty song that he passed to her. She hid her recording of the Belladonna album. A woman secretly recording a solo album. They needed a hit and Jimmy Iovine, both producer, convinced Petty to give her this song. It was her first solo hit.
If you like duets with Stevie, check out 'Whenever I call you friend'. She sang that with Kenny Loggins. Another awesome hit. Enjoy!
Your analysation of people's perception of 80s music was so on point. So much more than the hair bands and bangles!
For sure! Both heartbreaker's n his solo stuff. Classics. One more Stevie n Tom....I need to Know. 🙂
Tom Petty had originally told Stevie Nicks she could record his song "Insider". Then he changed his mind. However you can find a few rare videos of Tom and Stevie signing Insider. Its a gem.
Yes, definitely check out Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He was a great rock song writer. RIP ☮💚🎶
I just saw her two months ago in Savanna, Ga. and I can say that she was great full of energy and her voice is still perfect.
I have tickets to bottleRock Festival in May. Can't wait!
two of favorite singers and what a great song they turned out, it floored when it came out, so damn good. Yes, do some Tom Petty, he's a Legend dude
This is my all time favorite song! Two amazing voices together!!
