My grandfather had a horseshoe hung on his front door. When people asked him how come a rational man like him does so. He said those who believe horseshoes protect against evil influence say it works even if you don't believe it does.
I have 3 of them, I have found them walking around my neighborhood, mind u I live in the suburbs but there are several ppl who own horses around here but anyways, I learned to save them and put them close to the front door of the house , for good luck and protection, btw, iron is considered a type of kryptonite for demons and bad vibrations, it’s also believed that wearing a piece of pure silver jewelry or any article made of it on your person will protect you from all evil of body and soul…….👍❤️🤪
As someone who regularly makes talismans based off of both the De Imaginibus and the Gayat Al Hakim, I must say I highly appreciate this clear look into the history of this art and technology! Thanks! Also - WOW! Did not know Adelard of Bath, an astrologer, introduced Arabic Numerals to Europe!!! We owe these ancient geniuses so, so much...
The pain...my bibliophilic heart absolutely aches that the Bohak and Burnett edition of the text is so hard to get...I've found one copy that is out of my price range currently. :( While I'm sure Warnock and Greer is fine (and I will get that one eventually, too!), I like to dig into the original languages when possible; and, I have really loved everything else I have read that Bohak has published, so there's that, too. It's good to see Arabic Wizard Clip Art Guy getting some attention these days! He certainly beats the heck out of Arabic Version of Clippy! ;) With the "breaking into song" talisman, I am reminded of the musical episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which is one of my favorite episodes of that entire series. Of course, that one was due to demonic intervention more than talismanic skill...but, sadly, many people today (including most people in Hollywood) would not understand the distinction.
I love that you chose this Jupiter Talisman as your image. I carried a replica of Joseph Smith’s Jupiter Talisman with me for years, until I lost it. Not sure how unique it was, but this is a match! Maybe you mention it in the episode, I actually haven’t listened to the whole thing yet. Your intro is why, in spite of my generally secular outlook and career in science, I choose to maintain my Jewish practices. We perform magic every day that our ancestors only dreamed of. "The problem, Bernard, is that what you and I do is so... complicated. We practice witchcraft. We speak the right words, then we create life itself out of chaos. William of Occam was a 13th century monk, he can't help us now, Bernard. He would have us burned at the stake." - Robert Ford, Westworld
Dr. Sledge, your content is so wonderful, your voice a soothing call for focus, and your perspective as inclusive as it is informed. I love this channel so much, and I'm so grateful you are such a powerful voice of enlightenment in my life. If my financial situation ever turns around, yours is the first patreon I'm supporting.
Love the intro to this one. Something that your channel made me realize was that magic and mysticism was just the precursor to science. The only real difference being modern science has a few extra centuries of recorded data to go off.
John Michael Greer describes this school of magic to be medieval rocket science, but in some of its forms it's actually like designing an atom bomb. This is a wonderful video, and you cracked an incredibly difficult topic which I've often struggled to explain to others for over twenty years. While Thabit ibn Qurra makes a point of saying any metal will suffice for a talisman, he is almost unique in the tradition in this opinion. Picatrix, even while excerpting De Imaginibus, says that the materials are so important that they can reverse the effects of a talisman if of an oppositional elemental temperament. A talisman to repel scorpions can instead be made to draw scorpions, simply by changing the material. (I side with the majority on this issue.) Thank you for making my day delightful.
Harran was the location of one of the most devastating defeats suffered by the Romans when in 53 BCE a Roman army of about forty thousand led by Roman billionaire Crassus was defeated by a much smaller Parthian army of about ten thousand. The Roman legionaries could not cope with the Parthian tactics involving swift and versatile horsemen -archers. According to Plutarch the head of Crassus was sent to the Armenian capital where the Parthians and Armenians were having a celebration and was used as a prop in the performance of a Greek play the "Bacchae." Latin name of the place was Carrhae.
I swear, I keep joking about how your videos do much to explain the lore of the video game, Elden Ring, but seriously. You really explain more of the game simply by talking about history and the occult than most Elden Ring lore channels do. Ever heard of the Onmyodo? Japanese wizardry, these schools popped up in the 700-1100 AD period, roughly. Still widely popularized in Japanese culture. "Yin-Yang Master", "Onmyoji", etc. There's some basic documentaries on the era, revolving mostly around the life of Abe no Seimei, the most famous wizard of that era, but the internet appears lacking in the way of a deep-dive into this fascinating saga.
Praestigiorum…prestigious…prestidigitation. Wow! As soon as you said “praestigiorum”, “prestidigitation” popped into my head. Thank you to The Prestige for being one of those movies that stays with you long after you watch it. lol!
From all the different kinds of magic I've explored, it seems like capturing the spiritual power of a higher, ideal realm is often involved. Alchemy and Sigil Magic appear to function on the same basis as Talismanic Magic. As a philosophy major, it's always interesting for me to see how science influenced philosophy, and both influenced magical praxis! I've explained "As above, so Below" to my family, and my mom is setting up a private nutrition consulting practice based of the Tree of Life with the motto of getting back to the roots. Thank you for this very interesting video. It's truly great, and frankly heartwarming, to see this subject covered in such an accessible and academically responsible way. I see that you have been using Wikipedia a lot. As a result, not everything is wholly in line with recent scholarship on the subject. On the Sabians of Harran and their supposed relation to Hermeticism, please see Van Bladel, Kevin 2009, The Arabic Hermes: From Pagan Sage to Prophet of Science, OUP (chapter "Hermes and the Ṣābians of Ḥarrān"). The gist of Van Bladel's chapter is that we neither know enough about Arabic Hermeticism nor about the Sabians of Harran to justify calling the latter 'Hermetic'. On the Bayt al-Hikma, please be aware that the notion that this was a large-scale public library and/or institution of learning is now viewed as a myth; see Gutas, Dimitri 1998, Greek Thought, Arabic Culture: The Graeco-Arabic Translation Movement in Baghdad and Early 'Abbāsid Society, Routledge. Gutas has shown that the Bayt al-Hikma most likely was nothing more than a name for the (private and relatively small-scale) palace library of the Abbasid caliphs Harun al-Rashid (763-809) and al-Ma'mun (786-833). See now also Ihsanoğlu, Ekmeleddin 2023, The Abbasid House of Wisdom between Myth and Reality, Routledge (non vidi; appears to also focus on the 19th/20th-century myth-making on this subject; there's a YT video of Ihsanoğlu speaking about his book). Thabit ibn Qurra's (died 901) relation to Hermeticism (if any) remains unclear, and though he of course flourished during the golden age of Arabic philosophy and science, he had nothing to do with the Bayt al-Hikma. Finally, there is a fairly large number of extant (but mostly unedited and wholly unstudied) Arabic texts falsely attributed to Apollonius of Tyana and to Jabir ibn Hayyan which deal at great length with talismans (specific mention should be made of the Jabirian Kitāb al-Baḥth, though there are other extant texts which may prove to be just as important). These are either roughly contemporary with Thabit or (in the case of the pseudo-Apollonius texts) slightly earlier, so it's a bit misleading to depict Thabit's little text as some kind of foundational work. Thabit is important because of his huge influence in the later Latin tradition, but when it comes to understanding the "science of talismans" (Ar. ʿilm al-ṭilasmāt) in its original (8th/9th-century) context, there are much more relevant texts out there waiting to be investigated. 💜🖤
You missundertand here , all forces at distance are occult to mechanical physics which is why mechanists who are anti Newton accused him of incompetence. Newtonian bodies are all pangravitational , even the thinnest flake of my scalp of nanoscale size can interact gravitationally with the most minute dust of moon .N-body gravitational full interaction still aren't solve to this day , when celestial Newtonian mathematical calculators calculate , they just assume 2 bodies as interactive points in 3d container , they can now imagine through the model how fast the two bodies move towards each other at the same time assume that without any gravitational force , the bodies are rectilinearly moving , as if there's set up guide for the bodies to not just erratically go anywhere , it's amazing that the mass of the moon don't fall down straight to the earth and the mountain don't just lift off straight to the heavens .What force the bodies to follow this pattern ? Isaac Newton say "hypothesis non fingo' . Einstein and Minkowski only makes things worse when they imbue phenomenal bodies' masses with time manipulation and spatial manipulation .
Thabit: Talisman 1 gets rid of scorpions. Me: ok, fair enough scorpions are probably a nuisance in that part of the world. What does the second one do? Thabit: oh, that one is a WMD Me: ..... so that's what George was looking for in Iraq
Love your work brother, would love to get your input for the video game I am making about the mystic arts and sciences which centers around hermeticism. Ill reach out soon
So here we have the origin of the Gingerbread Man 19:45 and Singin' In the Rain. Several years ago I spent an hour or two on the phone looking for a pet store here in South Australia that sold scorpions (for a male teen relative of mine who wanted an edgy pet) I succeeded but at the time it would have been great to have had a talisman for the acquisition of scorpions (how the world has changed !) In all seriousness, another excellent and fascinating video Dr Sledge.
Dr. Sledge, if we were personally acquainted you’d probably dismiss me because I practice folk magic and myself am not entirely materialist. Nonetheless I deeply appreciate a channel about esoterica from a basically secular perspective because there is so much cultism, mental unwellness and willingness to lie for effect among those involved in the occult. There is also a sorcerer-Born Again pipeline that makes me think a great deal of people who are into magic would benefit more from community and grounding than retreating further into oneself and the abstract. Masonic literature has a similar problem: everyone wants so badly to have -the secret- they drive themselves crazy. Some like myself would argue the real lost word of a Mason is the friends we made along the way but that will not satisfy someone who needs to know something “the masses” don’t. It is hard to find any commentary with integrity on such matters. Regarding talismans they have been to me the most effective magic. I think a lot of the magic, or therapy, of it is in the doing. A lot of work and planning going into a little thing that looks neat and directs your focus. Even if it should turn out to be woo-woo in its details it represents investment of personal energy into some goal. A step up from playing with your belly button on the couch about it lol. I think there is more to it, but I don’t blame anyone for not believing. In fact for poorly situated folks, delving too actively into the invisible may do more harm than good. Thank you for sharing your work and knowledge Doc.
Heck of a complex way to get rid of a scorpion. It's always like that with ancient magic. The highly ceremonial rituals and formulas and painstaking effort to effect a simple outcome in almost a childlike manner. I don't see how Dr. Sledge retains all this esoteric material.
Aha! Something in my wheelhouse to comment upon in contribution to the discussion! So I'm given to understand, in my Reader's Digest education on the astrology of antiquity and Medieval practice, that there is a big ol' debate over the distinction between what is already decided ("fate" or "tyche") and what folk are drawn toward or struggle to achieve by free will or the like ("destiny" or "daimon"). It is kind of a big deal, many folk have argued with each other over the centuries, blah blah yackity shmackity. But y'all might want to dig into the thesis of Dorian Greenbaume for more on this divide and how it is handled in Hellenic practice; she wrote a big thesis on it that I think is available freely as pdf, and she also appears on UA-cam a couple places to pop out & talk about it. End footnote.
Oh also, Lot of Fortune pertains to like ALLLLLL things sub-Lunary, so it is a grounded thing for using as like point of first contact in the circuit/chain of action/layers of emanation a talisman starts acting from. It makes sense whether you interpret talismans as shouting at the Heavens "DO A BARREL ROLL!" like a Calvin & Hobbes strip, or you think of talismans more like an astrological transit you bottled for later or secured a momento of.
How did I JUST NOW realize that I could’ve basically magicked a musical just by making a talisman?!? This theater kid’s mind is swirling with what kind of Sondheim musical I would want ppl to “perform” 🤔😂😂
You should ditch T-shirts and coffee cups and sell amulets and talismans in your shop. Of course we don't believe the humbug but it doesn't mean we still can't dig on it!
Dear Esoterica, I am watching your very interesting channel and video choices for content, I have a friend who belongs to a LDS church somewhere near Flint mi and and go sometimes and he finds your content so interesting in the contexts of theology, science, philosophy, and mystical knowledge and how it all relates to Christianity and the universe I'm wondering if you or someone from this channel associated with the Rabbi's to deliver this kind of knowledge to the church and to the young people and everyone in the church? Do you do seminars perhaps where you can visit a church and from the tree of life and the holy angelic kingdom perspective and deliver this type of knowledge?
Spacetime and gravitation circle back to / imply a fabric of constitutional and emerging destinies, fates, choices and interventions as well as a potential democratized distribution of dramaturgic authority across this field of provoked and consequential events
Dr Sledge, would you ever consider making a video on C.G. Jung as a mystic and alchemist? I wonder if his work is of any interest to you. Also, I'm a bit alarmed that some popular charlatans claim to be his faithful readers, so it would be very refreshing to know your perspective!
14:10 to 15:23 < I believe that this explains the phenomena of spirits or ghosts. It seems to suggest that objects (or any relatively solid material, e.g. A house) can be imbued with the spiritual essence of a once living being, via some kind of occult transference (whether intentional or not). These objects can become talismanic, in their own right. I arrive at this theory from my own direct experience with the supernatural.
I'm curious as to the relationship (if any) between the processes described here and what people describe as talismans in China, Korea and Japan, where they generally seem to be pieces of paper or cloth bearing the appropriate marks, with no metal involved.
I currently am wearing the seal of the seven archangels. Seems to differ depending on your source but I don't mind. It is a protective and good energy attracting talisman and that does me. Or is this an amulet. Hmm....
So, was their idea of "fate" distinct from the modern notion which is more wrapped up in predetermination, or did they think that the movements of the celestial bodies were predetermined?
Silly question, but would anyone be able to guide me to this Pseudo Ptomely 'On the Images' text? I've tried looking it up but all the links redirect to Ptomely proper or general astrology information.
"If I had a talisman that could make people break out into song, I'd be living in some kind of wierd musical - actually doesn't sound very good" There's an SCP based around how horrifying that would be to experience lol

Talismans! 🔘
Pentacles of 🪐
Thabit: Talisman 1 gets rid of scorpions.
Me: ok, fair enough scorpions are probably a nuisance in that part of the world. What does the second one do?
Thabit: oh, that one is a WMD
Me: ..... so that's what George was looking for in Iraq
LMAO!
22:43 There was a Buffy episode that would've been made even more amusing by including such a talisman.
Thanks!
Hey! It's the technical hernetica! Fancy seeing you here. 😂 It's almost like we have a specialist in that era and general topic.
Heck of a complex way to get rid of a scorpion. It's always like that with ancient magic. The highly ceremonial rituals and formulas and painstaking effort to effect a simple outcome in almost a childlike manner. I don't see how Dr. Sledge retains all this esoteric material.
another great video!
@@Benni777 where attention goes, energy flows 🙏
Is there a talisman so shows never make another musical episode?
You need a sub channel showing how people back in the day might have made items like this. Maybe 1 vid a month?
HARRANIAN SABEAN EPISODE .. YES..YES..YES..
I'm off topic but wanted to recommend the movie "Pyewacket"
If esoterica sold such amulets imbued with actual magik I'm sure wallets would open up.
That would require fraud on my part and I'll pass.
@@TheEsotericaChannel isn't that generally what business is lol? 👀
Maybe, but quick cash isn't worth my integrity
@@TheEsotericaChannel this is why you're respected ❤️
Does the text deal with troubleshooting? I’m curious about what the failure modes of a talisman that didn’t deliver might be.
Awesome intro
I gotta plug Tamara Green's City of the Moon God about Harran. Great stuff.
Nice tie
Talisman have been around forever. It’s not all in books… Thank you.
as always, great video
Ok but can i get a talisman for finding Buried Treasure
Probably. I'd go with a metal detector, though.
Power of the mind.
OOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOOOOODDDDD I CAN'T SINGGGGGGGGG! WHAT HAVE U DONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
I'm curious as to the relationship (if any) between the processes described here and what people describe as talismans in China, Korea and Japan, where they generally seem to be pieces of paper or cloth bearing the appropriate marks, with no metal involved.
If I remember correctly, Solomon seals can take the form of a talisman (written on paper at a specific hour) or the form of an amulet (cast in metal).
16:50 - 17:10 Washington DC is the "city of stars".
I’ll go ahead and say it…
☝️ We’re All Talismans! ✨
Can you or have you talked about The Amalantrah Working (Liber CXVII)?
I currently am wearing the seal of the seven archangels. Seems to differ depending on your source but I don't mind. It is a protective and good energy attracting talisman and that does me. Or is this an amulet. Hmm....
Gratia tibi ago Magister I ordered a copy. Vale
Doctor, would you be willing to recommend a well received biography (for general consumption… not scholarly) of Bruno??… there are many available.
Thanks
I turned my signature into a talisman. 🤷♂️
Nice!
Hey man , can you do a video on Guru Shukracharya ?
Nah
The Pentacles in the key of Solomon are of talismanic nature?
Do the languages matter when writing the talisman , because i saw similar written structure but in hebrew
"If I had a talisman that could make people break out into song, I'd be living in some kind of wierd musical - actually doesn't sound very good"
There's an SCP based around how horrifying that would be to experience lol
Dark metal band name, The Spells of The Talisman? 😎
Bet the Talisman for collecting fish is a pole with a string. :)
As soon as you said a talisman for collecting fish, i had just opened a can of salmon. 😂
Ok, now I want to know about the talisman that makes people break out into song.
Naked song and dance… a stripper talisman
I know it's a dumb thing, but, I can't unhear 'Pikachu' whenever you say Picatrix 🤦♂.
