Sven Coop reached its peak when it came to Steam because before that, the mod had a small dedicated playerbase but as the years go by, the hype fades away and so does the interest people have towards that mod. Played a lot of it a decade or so ago but these days, there are far better options for coop games unless nostalgia draws you in.
Sven Co-op perhaps one of the more accessible ways to get into the HL and goldsource world without spending a dime and not pirating any game. It's simple, it has tons of mods and as the name implies it relies heavily on co-op (obviously) rather than PvP. I don't think the game will disappear so easily tho, and with the hype old Goldsource games are starting to regain overtime... Perhaps the servers will be able to fill up a bit even for a little while. It's one of the better HL mods out there that really emphasizes on what Goldsource is still capable of doing.
The generation of gamers that grew up playing this game have aged and moved onto other games or other things in life, the halcyon days of sven coop are in the past, and all of us who experience that time we should be grateful for that.
I think this was pretty much inevitable. Most use cases of Sven before the Steam release we're pretty much just used as a way to play Half-Life and mods with your buds. The steam release brought it to a lot of new people and it was a fun new thing for a while. That being said, most of those people got there fill of it pretty quick and moved on. It doesn't help that most of the maps don't really seem to be designed around having a whole sever full of people playing them. Maybe its a little sad I guess, but in all reality Sven Co-Op is just a tool and its one that's extremely easy to use now.
There's so many maps i didn't finished because there was no people who wanted to play... maybe that's why i stopped playing it since 2019, anyways if someone wants to play it let me know
yep, some oldschool players left Sven Coop after update to v5, which is steam only and not everybody likes steam, or stayed at 4.8 version, there are still 4.8 servers running, like our servers BRUT(dot)me Sven Co-Op 4.8 CLASSIC that are not shown in the steam serrverlist of Sven Co-Op, in fact we are playing on our Sven CO-Op quite often for last weeks, as we started to like the last man standing map lmsbath, we will keep Sven coop alive, although on 4.8 version, anyway it is an older game, so most people moved to newer games or completely in their lives
Wtf you saying. Sven has an active community, with regular new maps released all the time. The devs keep working on it albeit slowly and there are massive new updates every now and then. The only reason you'd say its dead is because it has a small playerbase. All coop games have small player bases, and because this one has oldschool graphics its even smaller. Because people likes the normie stuff with pvp like fortnite, battlebit, diablo, etc but those people will be playing another game next month when the hype is gone and repeat this cycle over and over.
I used to play it a lot from 2003 and up, before the steam release. All the custom maps was the best, for me who loved half-life it was like an extension, a never ending expansion of the original games. There were also a lot of really fun maps, like the OMG, WTF series of puzzle maps, and the mazes of the secretcity maps that was so chaotic to play in multiplayer as people discovered the secrets of the maps. There was the EndMod era, a kind of mod similar to GMod that predates GMod by several years, in it people could manipulate the maps and entities, and there was specifically built maps for it; the_better_than_the_best_entmap was the most played. In the latter years I regurly played on the SnarkCafe server, it gave the players certain abilites based on how long time one played on it, unlocking things like regenerate health and teleport. After a time similar servers started to popup, servers using an amxmodx XPMod that unlocked abilities based on XP rather then time. I suppose the fun was beginning too fade there, since most people played on such servers rather then regular servers that didn't unlock stuff.
Wow you got it down to a tee. That's exactly how I remembered it. I played mostly from 2005-2009, and I loved Entmod and also those maps you just mentioned. Once it got past version 3.0 I started to lose interest which was around 2008.
I still play Sven, pretty funny no matter what and new content is still released thanks to modders, but sometimes what really kills the game are some admins (fortunately not in all servers) who are pretty arrogant and treat you like sh*t by not helping you if you die, rushing and using a lot of code cheats, ruining completely the experience,i've seen some admins who enters a survival campaign only for rushing/farming and not helping anyone only to show others what they are cappable of, and sometimes killing you for no reason, some players left the game because of that
This video feels like it was scripted by ChatGPT I swear. Dude just repeats the same phrases of "this mod's been forgotten about" over and over, never explaining why it's even an issue since it was always about playing with friends. Can't even give a concrete reason as to why tf anyone should care that Sven-coop isn't talked about in 2 entire minutes.
Hey brotha, thank you for the comment. And I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the video, I’ll make sure the next one is a bit better! I can assure you I wrote the script, just gonna get better I guess! Have a good day 🤝
@@coolindiegames Sorry for being so harsh. I just genuinely don't understand what the matter with Sven is or what the point of the video is supposed to be.

As absurd as this sounds, Sven coop mappers and modders need to cater to solo players as well, A map that is played coop, Should be beatable in solo play as well, In this case sven would become a better alternative to half life
It's June 2024 and I still play thing game, can't get over its simplicity and compatibility with new systems and hardware. As far as I understand, Sven devs modified and massively improved the overall compatibility and stability of this game's old "goldsrc" engine. It's the same goldsrc as the original HL1, but improved, which still makes the game relevant to players that simply like nostalgic campaign games with friends. I'm in Middle East, and I play only on European servers because the less ping the better the experience, and the activity there is quite good actually. some servers have 3~5 players, other bigger servers like Misfire usually have about 15 players during evening/night times around Eu/ME, which to be fair is a LOT because some custom campaign maps have too many tight spaces to move around especially in indoors-only maps. This game doesn't have thousands of players, but the few hundreds of players that still do are basically loyal to this game and we'll always stick around and remember each other's names and make fun conversations while making complete chaos in maps and breaking scripts and having a laugh at every fail moments we witness. This alone is worth to stick around.
Interesting note: Steam Charts says that Sven peaks at around 500~600 players in the last few months, so considering the fact that every server is only good enough to host about 20~30 players, that makes it at least 17 (quite full) servers globally. That's impressive for a mod that was released in 1999. I don't think the game's dead. 😅
eh there's no need for a sven coop 2, unless you're talking about half life 2 co-op (in which case you can play Synergy and Obsidian Conflict for that)
One of the best Co-op mods. I had a maaaayor problem with trying to enable friendly fire since they removed it completly, which makes like 0 fucking sense and still kinda pissed me off lol but one of the best coop horror available on the steam store.
I remember playing some weird Korean map on Sven co-op with some of my buds it some pretty weird but it was still pretty fun trying to figure out what to do
i play sven not to just play with buddies "i dont have buddies" but to play half life and eventually get the hell out bcuz i got scared of some random alligator or smth
I remember how i used to play on one server theres like just a house and u could be like ghost that attacks something like that i miss that old times [ that server died in 2017 and was empty until 2018 and finally being deleted in 2019 ]
Yeah back when this game first died, most people left and went to other games, like Garry's mod/Half life 2 role playing/coop servers. All of us who played the original Sven coop before it officially released with Steam, were playing a whole different type of game. It's still there don't get me wrong, but all the ENT Mod maps, all the role play maps where you could be a thief or cop or whatever, all those servers died, they did not come back when Sven re-released, and neither did all the old friends we made while playing old Sven.... Which is the main reason why most people probably stopped playing all together, including myself. I played this game for years and I had a blast lol, but it is better served as a memory. Sven isn't the only game suffering like this though, Zombie Panic Source is almost dead as well, and I used to play that game non-stop for years as well, it had lots of servers up but now it's like no one even plays.
i often still play Sven but i'm always disappointed as whenever i look at the servers there's barely like 3 people on one server. pretty sad to see sven in such state, especially beacuse i was introduced to it not a very long time ago and i'm still a newcomer.
imagine calling a game dead just because it doesnt have 100 gazillion players daily. like, sven has a few servers that are constantly active and have a lot of players there, what else do you need? if you compare sven coop to other goldsrc mods, it probably has the biggest playerbase out there and its quite impressive for an old ass game there are much bigger issues to sven, like hackers or slow development of updates and all that. low player count aint anywhere close to them and sounds like a joke to me
Sniper (lead “dev” who doesn’t code) screwed everyone, in my 1 interaction with him he was nothing but a prick, and I wasn’t even talking directly to him
Love Sven Co-Op. Played Pizza Ya San with about six of my buddies years and years ago. Good times. What's the music starting at 0:26 by the way? Is that a reverbed/muffled version of Slowdeath by Sewerslvt?
I assume you are not being serious. As a Sven Coop player for more than 3 years, I can say that you are dead wrong on this if you say Sven is a dead game. Ironically you literally just said 46 servers remain active, and that was just average number per daily basis. Being an old game which it celebrates 24 years old, fact that it has 400+ players and 40+ active servers per month is quite a complimentary result. Sven Coop will never die because its a free game where the playerbase are now accessible by global people from poorer regions, something they can't afford to buy new games like Fortnite, COD Warzone or whatnot. And unlike Half-Life, Sven Coop is a community game, which means the devs actively do bug fixes. It's true that the playerbase has fallen as compare to 10 years ago, but this is mainly also because Sven Coop has not undergo any updates since it 5.25 release in 2021. If Sven devs announces further updates, the playerbase will jump back high again as it happened many times whenever new updates are released.
@kozmic4276You are wrong. In my hardcore server where I played, the majority of the new players are actually as young as 13 to 30. I don't know what do you mean by boomer, on the contrary those older ages would have played other games as they could afford to spend more money on PC games.
@@averagehl2betafan148 WTF Happened to Sven Coop? 2 minutes to say "I dunno" instead of providing an answer. At least it's only 2 minutes. I've seen clickbaits where they go on for 15 to 30 to say absolutely nothing. Or the thing the title and thumbnail is about is in the last 2 minutes with 28 minutes of sponsorships.
idk, i just feel like the novelty wears off. its fun for a bit but it gets boring quiitee quickly. most coop games that are just "shoot things with friends" tend to get quite dull. Thats why pvp tends to be more popular than pve. Best coop experience tends to be puzzle coop stuff and there's not much of it on Sven.
Vanilla gameplay will of course gets boring easily because its beaten easily. Try play hardcore servers with only 1HP, a single map can easily grind up to 4-6 hours because its so addictive.
@@ak47toh nah, i never said it was it being easy. ive had SEVERAL times where my friendgroup got so tired of retrying one section over and over that we quit cuz we are bored lol. spefically excessive hitscan shit gets super fucking boring and trial and error.
is not dead... but the people that triesout the game just plays the campaign and thats it they move on, and the vanilla custom maps arent even that good theres no achievements, and the vanilla gameplay is pretty boring honestly, not even the custom servers have good addicting gameplay personally dont forget that the community is full of weirdos and sometimes pedophiles especially in the spanish one so yeah thats is kinda the reason why this game is probably "dead"
In fact, Sven Co-op is not dead. The game has simply gotten rid of annoying players who saw it as nothing more than a "free Half-Life with co-op". There are still a lot of garbage servers from those players, which gives the impression that the game is dead. But look at servers like twilightzone, or Misfire with their new weapons and SCXPM. The community itself is alive, creating new maps, models, and other content.
IMO Sven Co-op went downhill in its development direction after v3.0 - that version was its prime. Granted, back in v3.0 days there were way more players in the Half-Life communities. Great memories!
Yeah I remember playing it in like 2006 at LAN parties. My favorite map was Toon Run and I’d use the Homer Simpson skin and my friend was Master Chief. I didn’t even know it stayed popular into the 2010s. I just kind of moved on to other games like Modern Warfare and TF2.

@@coolindiegames yeah, pre-steam release was a whole different experience.
There's so many maps i didn't finished because there was no people who wanted to play... maybe that's why i stopped playing it since 2019, anyways if someone wants to play it let me know
I could play with you (my region is asia so my ping might be a bit high)
yep, some oldschool players left Sven Coop after update to v5, which is steam only and not everybody likes steam, or stayed at 4.8 version, there are still 4.8 servers running, like our servers BRUT(dot)me Sven Co-Op 4.8 CLASSIC that are not shown in the steam serrverlist of Sven Co-Op, in fact we are playing on our Sven CO-Op quite often for last weeks, as we started to like the last man standing map lmsbath, we will keep Sven coop alive, although on 4.8 version, anyway it is an older game, so most people moved to newer games or completely in their lives
Agreed
Ya know with the Half Life 25th Anniversary I hope Sven Co-op gets an influx of players.
The misfire servers are still active sometimes, there is a leveling system with prestige and multijump...
Sven co-op is not dead who said dead ? Weird..
People still enjoy Sven Co-op a lot
Also some half-life mod still port to Sven Co-op map for user.
I swear I had like a thousand hours played back in the 2008 - 2012 era.
Sven Coop is Garry's Mod of Half-Life 1 and Gordon is highly trained professional
holy shite, hi Sanitylost
@@Derpixied hello :)
Once it got past version 3.0 I started to lose interest which was around 2008.
yeah it will always be there, I dont think sven CO OP will ever just dissapear
I still play Sven, pretty funny no matter what and new content is still released thanks to modders, but sometimes what really kills the game are some admins (fortunately not in all servers) who are pretty arrogant and treat you like sh*t by not helping you if you die, rushing and using a lot of code cheats, ruining completely the experience,i've seen some admins who enters a survival campaign only for rushing/farming and not helping anyone only to show others what they are cappable of, and sometimes killing you for no reason, some players left the game because of that
Probably still has more of a player base than Synergy.
@@LordVader1094 when sven coop relased steam in 2016. There are a lot of servers you can enjoyed but. After 1 year, some server closed and dead.. only big servers survived..
All of server opended by user not dev team unlike as l4d2 / team fortress
I also dont idea what happen in 2017~18.. hmm.. weird to me
i got a 17 person lobby to do a hardcore mode afraid of monsters run start to finish a few months ago shit was wildin
As absurd as this sounds,
Sven coop mappers and modders need to cater to solo players as well,
A map that is played coop,
Should be beatable in solo play as well,
In this case sven would become a better alternative to half life
It's June 2024 and I still play thing game, can't get over its simplicity and compatibility with new systems and hardware.
Interesting note:
Steam Charts says that Sven peaks at around 500~600 players in the last few months, so considering the fact that every server is only good enough to host about 20~30 players, that makes it at least 17 (quite full) servers globally. That's impressive for a mod that was released in 1999. I don't think the game's dead. 😅
With all the fan remakes of blue shift, opposing force and decay and the already complete Black mesa maybe a Sven co-op 2 😅
eh there's no need for a sven coop 2, unless you're talking about half life 2 co-op (in which case you can play Synergy and Obsidian Conflict for that)
One of the best Co-op mods. I had a maaaayor problem with trying to enable friendly fire since they removed it completly, which makes like 0 fucking sense and still kinda pissed me off lol
but one of the best coop horror available on the steam store.
That game was fun, the bad thing is that this game happened with Opposing force Deathmatch, Dmc and Ricochet that left them abandoned. 😢
I remember playing some weird Korean map on Sven co-op with some of my buds it some pretty weird but it was still pretty fun trying to figure out what to do
I wish Sven Coop would continue being active and keep the flames strong.
i play sven not to just play with buddies "i dont have buddies" but to play half life and eventually get the hell out bcuz i got scared of some random alligator or smth
I remember how i used to play on one server theres like just a house and u could be like ghost that attacks something like that i miss that old times [ that server died in 2017 and was empty until 2018 and finally being deleted in 2019 ]
dude you're not just gonna make a video with banger music without telling me what the first song used was
my server had 8 players on last night all fresh faces ive not seen before.
Zombie Master 😔
svens great fun with some friends, just when the only update is a meme april fool post kinda sucks to see
i am still playing Sven but only because i got HL1 for free and can finnaly play somenthing with friends other than..........roblox
*something
i often still play Sven but i'm always disappointed as whenever i look at the servers there's barely like 3 people on one server.
pretty sad to see sven in such state, especially beacuse i was introduced to it not a very long time ago and i'm still a newcomer.
imagine calling a game dead just because it doesnt have 100 gazillion players daily.
like, sven has a few servers that are constantly active and have a lot of players there, what else do you need? if you compare sven coop to other goldsrc mods, it probably has the biggest playerbase out there and its quite impressive for an old ass game
there are much bigger issues to sven, like hackers or slow development of updates and all that. low player count aint anywhere close to them and sounds like a joke to me
Yeah even in sur American servers there's atleast plenty of people playing the game lol
Yes it is actually! I’m 98% sure. I love slow reverted sewerslvt
If sven coop is dead then I dont want to know what zandronum tspg is supposed to be
I assume you are not being serious.
I remember the resident evil maps like it was yesterday
Stop clickbaiting bro
wdym
@@averagehl2betafan148 WTF Happened to Sven Coop?
2 minutes to say "I dunno" instead of providing an answer. At least it's only 2 minutes. I've seen clickbaits where they go on for 15 to 30 to say absolutely nothing. Or the thing the title and thumbnail is about is in the last 2 minutes with 28 minutes of sponsorships.
No >:)
@@sgtpieman also the title stating Sven is a dead game with 0 players, even though it actually has ~300 players right now
@@coolindiegames delete your channel then, youtube is already full of this kind of worthless content
idk, i just feel like the novelty wears off.
its fun for a bit but it gets boring quiitee quickly.
most coop games that are just "shoot things with friends" tend to get quite dull.
This and Natural Selection 1 was one of the best mode out there back in its heyday
Naaah dawg sven is alive and thriving imo. Nice vid tho 👏👏👏💯💯💯
Sven Coop's problem was that there wasn't enough good maps.
Me and ny buddies used to play this back in the early 2000s.. it was an awesome "co-op single player experience" lol
Bro why you have 383 subs you must deserve 1 million subs
Sven Coop was huge before it hit steam. Steam was a double edge sword.
is not dead... but the people that triesout the game just plays the campaign and thats it they move on, and the vanilla custom maps arent even that good
theres no achievements, and the vanilla gameplay is pretty boring honestly, not even the custom servers have good addicting gameplay personally
dont forget that the community is full of weirdos and sometimes pedophiles especially in the spanish one so yeah thats is kinda the reason why this game is probably "dead"
There are actually hundreds of servers but most are empty. Even the real half life gets more activity
i still regularly play it :) keep it alive baybee
In fact, Sven Co-op is not dead. The game has simply gotten rid of annoying players who saw it as nothing more than a "free Half-Life with co-op". There are still a lot of garbage servers from those players, which gives the impression that the game is dead.
But look at servers like twilightzone, or Misfire with their new weapons and SCXPM. The community itself is alive, creating new maps, models, and other content.
@kozmic4276 it's just an example
and yeah - i don't play there
@kozmic4276 pinnacle of gaming fym
IMO Sven Co-op went downhill in its development direction after v3.0 - that version was its prime. Granted, back in v3.0 days there were way more players in the Half-Life communities. Great memories!
Where’s CHEESEMONSTER? He made a bot for this back in the day
A lot of people are still playing it just like Garry’s Mod
man, i love this game, is sad that not much people play it now.
good song, really liked background song, what's the name?
Thanks!

wth? its not dead at all
we need fewer games so people can play the games that already exist
What is the ending music?
what's the name of the song in the outro?

the mod is older than you. that's why.
Still playin
remilia's best server
Dead and forgotten? Sven was never that big tbh. 46 servers is pretty solid imo for Sven. I say this as a day one player.
I'm still playing it
Not enough new content
I am one of many ADMINS that host Sven coop, WON is dead but only because Steam now host SVEN COOP seperate from Half-Life. [CNC]-=MeCHNIZeR=-
Its because they added useless features and didnt fix bullet spone enemies and the new updates just made the game worse and limited the players.
I miss this game
It hasn't gone. :)
@AdamReece87 for me it has. My gaming rig went down back in 2015

Ayy! Glad you found the cideo
the game isn't dead lol
Sven coop was better during 3.0, I do not like the new weapons
