    Today we are looking at the Rode VideoMic Go On-camera Lightweight Shotgun microphone. This is an extremely popular on-camera microphone and it’s also one of Rode’s less expensive camera mics.
    Like its bigger and more expensive sibling, the Videomic, the Videomic Go has a tubular mic body that is 6.5inches long and is covered by a foam windscreen. The mic’s body is suspended from a Red, Rycote vibration mount and the mount connects to a camera using a standard shoe mount. The shoe mount also has a standard ⅜” female thread, so you can even mount the mic to a boom pole or mic stand. Now I’ll put some links to boom poles and mic stands that will work with this mic, in the description below. Now unlike the Videomic or Videomic Pro, this mic does not need any batteries to power it. The mic is powered by the power from the camera’s 3.5mm audio jack, when you plug the mic’s cable into the camera. The mic also doesn’t have on-off button. And both these features are extremely useful- you won’t forget to turn on and turn off the mic and you’ll never have to change batteries. The mic’s cable has a coiled design which makes it flexible enough to connect to almost any camera. Now if this cable isn’t long enough for you, the cable can be removed and replaced with a 3.5mm audio extension cable. Now my recommendation when getting an audio extension cable is to get an original Rode extension cable. I’ve just seen people get a lot of interference in their audio, just because they used a cheapy audio cable. Again, I’ll leave a link to the original 10ft Rode audio cable, below.
    The mic is extremely simple to use. It just plugs into your camcorder, mirrorless camera or DSLR and you’re ready to start recording. However, if your camera has manual audio level controls, I really do recommend setting your audio levels manually before you start recording.
    Now unlike the Rode Videomic Pro, this mic does not have the +20db boost. Now this isn’t as big an issue if you have a Camcorder or Sony or Panasonic Mirrorless Camera. The audio pre-amps on these cameras are usually decent. However, the pre-amps on most Canon and Nikon DSLRs are total garbage. And that’s why the Rode Videomic Pro had a +20db boost, which allowed you to use less gain from the camera’s pre-amp and so it improved your sound recordings on DSLRs.
    Today though, I am going to test the Videomic Go with a Panasonic G7 which has a decent pre-amp. And just to give you a benchmark for the quality of the Videomic Go, the audio you’re hearing now is from the built in mic on the Panasonic G7. And I must point out that the built-in mic on the G7 is a really good mic. I am going to read you a quote so you can hear how the built-in mic sounds. And here’s a quote by Bill Gates: “I'm a great believer that any tool that enhances communication has profound effects in terms of how people can learn from each other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms that they're interested in.” Now the camera is still about 2 feet away from me and I’ve mounted the mic on the camera and I’ve set the levels manually, to ensure I am not peaking. And here’s the same quote again: “I'm a great believer that any tool that enhances communication has profound effects in terms of how people can learn from each other, and how they can achieve the kind of freedoms that they're interested in.” And as you can tell the VideoMic pro is slightly better than the built in mic on the G7. It has less white background noise and produces some pretty clean audio. I must say, I am more impressed than I initially expected to be.
    So should you buy this mic. Well, maybe I should start who shouldn’t buy this mic. If you own a Canon or Nikon DSLR, this mic is definitely not for you. The pre-amps in those cameras are downright awful and you’ll have a lot of white noise, commonly know as DSLR hiss. For you folks, I’d recommend putting in the extra money and going with the Rode Videomic Pro. You can also check out our review of that mic, I’ll leave a link below. Now if you own a camcorder or Sony or Panasonic Mirrorless Camera, this mic will work just fine. Its a great, inexpensive way to improve the audio coming into your camera.
    And I’ll leave links to all the mics, adapters, cables and mic stands that I spoke about, so feel free to check those out. I leave those links below. Hope this was useful, it was, please hit that LIKE button and subscribe for more reviews. Thanks for watching!

    3:00 did you hear that static noise? It sounds like an old microdot printer from the 90 era. Not so loud by comparison to the wind noise but definitely noticeable.

    The manual settings seem to through it off a bit.. I'd add an auto settings sound test :)

    3:06 Levels adjusted manually. But at 3:25 it sounds like auto adjustment - during the wind and other external noise your voice fades quite a bit.

      You cannot connect it to a 2000D because the 2000D doesn’t have a mic port

    Hi, me again. lol :) I do love your video's and am learning plenty from them. Thank you. Again, I'm interested in voice over's and/or UA-cam podcasts, so I'd like to know if this lower level mic by Rhodes can be connected and powered by your laptop?
    Thanks for your generous consideration,
    Steph

    If I use a canon mirrorless, will it still be bad?

  • @ryantimlin5160
    @ryantimlin5160 7 років тому +1

    I'm confused....I own a Canon 70d DSLR so why would buying an external mic like this be a bad decision? Does the Rode Go use the audio levels from the camera itself and is the Rode Pro is able to add it's own natural increase to the audio levels? That's currently my best understanding anyway. Any and all advice on this would be appreciated. Thanks!! :)

    • @Reviewlamp
      @Reviewlamp  7 років тому

      +Ryan Timlin Yes, you're right. The problem is the Audio quality of the pre-amps in those DSLRs. There's a lot of noise. So using the pre-amp in the camera, reduces audio quality. With the Rode Videomic Pro, there is a built in amplifier that boosts the audio level. Thus, you end up using less of your camera's audio boost.

    • @ryantimlin5160
      @ryantimlin5160 7 років тому +1

      Got it! Thank you so much for the advice! I was considering the Rode Go, but if it doesn't really improve my audio levels then I should just save my money for something else.

    • @Reviewlamp

      I agree. The Videomic Pro is a better option.

      oh my gosh, you're not the only one that thinks the audio sounds better without the mic.. the audio using the GO mic is so awful with my canon t5i... like i almost didn't wanna put out videos that I spent hours editing out because of the hiss and editing it out makes me sound muffled.. xD

    Do you know of any software one can use to test this mic over laptops or desktops?
    I hardly can see any difference on audio I hear from the videos I make with my Canon DSLR with my newly purchased Rode VideoMic Go, and the without(using only the built-in DSLR mic).
    I actually am beginning to doubt if this Rode mic I just recently got is working or not.. 😑
    Or are there any other more ways we can check audio recordings from this equipment? Help pls 😂

      I did. I tried plugging it into the mic jack of my laptop, but it doesnt seem to detect the mic in any ways(as most of the time, when I jack in anything to my laptop, be it separate drives, headphones, etc., Im usually prompted by the system as to what I just plugged-in.). This is my first ever attempt on my whole life plugging-in a microphone or audio receiving device to my laptop.
      Speaking of audacity, I have that software on my laptop. But I havent tried it on it yet. Are there ways to check the mic with it? Wont my laptop's built-in mic interfere with the supposed recordings? How is this done.
      Im really sorry. Im just a starter here. Im not that savvy also with these recent equipments I just had.
      TIA

      I have a canon t6i, do you know how to reduce/ remoi the hiss?

    • @Reviewlamp
      @Reviewlamp  7 років тому +1

      The hiss is not due to the mic. The hiss is due to the pre-amp on the T6i. The only way to remove it is to use the noise reduction option on a video editor or to use the Rode Videomic Pro instead: amzn.to/2fx9oMC
      The Videomic Pro has a +20db boost which ensures you use less of the Pre-amps on the camera.
