    When RODE announced their latest consumer oriented microphone the VideoMic GO I was pretty amazed that it was priced at only $99. As more and more photographers venture into shooting video they quickly realize the importance of quality audio.
    Now with the VideoMic Go quality audio does not have to be overly expensive. I recently took this microphone out for a spin to a friends concert.
    Brian Marsella is a world famous pianist who creates unbelievable sounding music. His show was the perfect opportunity for me to give this microphone a spin.
    The setup is very simple. Place the microphone in the hot shoe, run the single cable to the camera and boom, you are almost ready to record. There are no settings to switch or futz with on the microphone itself, it is simply one cable. On top of no buttons there is no need for separate batteries as the mic gets all it's power from the camera.
    The next step is one of the most important when it comes to capturing solid audio at concerts or in any situation for that matter. You have to set your levels properly. Sure you could leave the audio levels on auto and let the camera do the work. But the results you get tend to leave a little to be desired.
    Most cameras now give you the ability to change the audio levels from Auto to Off to High, Medium and Low. Some of the higher end cameras even give you a much larger range to tweak your settings. I used the Nikon D4 for this shoot and set my audio levels all the way down to 2, which means I was in a loud environment.
    Without getting into to much detail about the reasons behind settings I wanted to make sure my audio was not peeking. The visual representation of this is shown when the audio levels get into the red area. My goal was to keep my audio in the yellow area without it touching the red. In order to achieve this at the show I had to move my levels all the way down to 2.
    As you can tell the results were spectacular. The audio is very balanced and does not go through major shifts that you tend to get when you leave it in auto.
    So let's move into a little bit of a review of this mic. For the price you are getting world class audio. Sure for more money you can get something with more bells and whistles but for most people just starting out with video this is a steal.
    In a world where most people stick with the on board audio you will have a head start with something like the VideoMic Go. This shotgun microphone is perfect for doing interviews as long as your subject is right in front of the camera at a reasonable distance. It is a great option for general audio recording of the ambient sounds that are around you.
    If you are using auto focus the microphone may still pick up the hunting noise slightly but it will be better than the onboard built in mic.
    Is this the best microphone in the world? The simple answer is no but it definitely holds it's on even against some of the more expensive microphones from RODE.
    If you are new to video recording this is one option that I highly recommend that you invest in right off the bat.
    For more on Brian Marsella and his music you can check out his website right here. brianmarsella.com/
    All the video was captured with the Nikon D4 on a manfroto video monopod with video head. I used the Nikon 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 lenses. The D4 was set to 1080P at 24 FPS. I also utilized the 2.7X Crop mode that the D4 offers.

    Great stuff Jared. Talented musicians. I know this is a demo on what a mic sounds like unprocessed. I would like to add that an un-processed audio is like a raw photo. Just like most photographers would never say a raw file is a finished photo a musician would never say an unprocessed audio file is a finished song. Learning simple aspects of audio recoding (EQ, compression, limiting, ect..) can make a microphone like the Rode sound like a professional recording. I encourage photographers to learn more about audio recording especially if they are getting into video and creating tutorials. Makes a difference:)

      Jazzmusicians are people who can't hit the same chord twice.
      Thats my opinion about jazz. I get stressed and turn off the sound - so it's a little difficult to check the mike out in this video :-)

    Nice video! I like Rode mics - i own a Rode NTG2 shotgun mic and a Zoom H4n for 4 track 2x mono + stereo ambient mic for recordings at gigs and events, those are my go to mics. Rode SmartLav I use for interviews, etc. Add nice bit of compression & EQ in post and you can get a real nice sound without too much hard work.

    Well you sure do get all of every sound in this mic test! I really needed to know how it would sound for concerts since it really is meant more for interviews. I am not impressed it's way to flat. Maybe running it through a mixer may help. But thanks for your work and not bad video cam work there

    This video is exactly what I was looking for! I am doing Music Monday's on my channel, where there will be acoustic performances. However, after buying the T5i, the $85? I think it is now on Amazon for this mic is great. Question though, people commented that they had a problem where there was a buzz and hum in their videos when using it. Did you experience that when using this mic?

    Which mic for which situation would be my question... live concert or ENG indoor or shoot and run outdoor with loud noise and what's your budget... for concerts if possible ask the sound guys for have a copy of the concert and synchronize it with your footage if not possible ask for placing a good large diaphragm mic with omni pattern (AKG 414) and place it where it is sounding good for all musicians/instruments(but what about singers :-)) if you want to focus on one instrument my secret weapon for small budget would be Oktava MK 012 with Michael Joly modification or more expensive Neumann KM184MT both are small diaphragm mic with cardiod pattern not as close (avoiding noise which is off axis) as a shotgun but much better sounding or a killer good mic is the Sennheiser short shotgun MKH 50. The dream solution would be Schoeps Collette MK41 ! Sorry for my bad english. See you from Vienna Austria!

    Would you recommend this Røde Videomic GO over the Røde videomic Pro in terms of soundquality at a loud rockshow? Since the Pro version has the plus/minus Db switch and the GO doesn't, and im shooting with the D7000 without manual audiosetting, would the loud sound not be better if recorded in a minus 10Db setting on the Pro version?

    the mike sounds decent for the money but would sound better if you found the best place in the room to get the mix and kept it there, but when the mike is on the camera it goes to wear the camera goes, and then the mix gets off, it's funny to read the comments and how many people don't get this music, I guess it's to sophisticated for the Justin Bieber generation who only get grade school pop

    • @froknowsphoto
      @froknowsphoto  10 років тому +9

      That was the point of this video. That the microphone is on the camera. It was not about where the best placement of the microphone is.
      If this was about recording the entire band I would have had a full board mix recording and other room mics picking other stuff up. But that was not the point of this video.

    • @MrChevypower
      @MrChevypower 10 років тому +1

      BlueXiiter Agreed, it sounds flat. But no single microphone is going to make it sound good. That's what people need to understand. You have to come directly out of the sound mixer into the camera (if you can get a good 2 channel mix), or whatever is recording the audio (with balanced connections). Ideally, you want a different sound mix than the live feed in the auditorium, which requires a separate mixer. If you can record a multitrack so you can mix it later in post, that's even better. Why do you need to go to all that trouble? Because microphones are most effective when extremely close to the subject. It's impossible to have one microphone in the perfect position for multiple sources. A camera-mounted shotgun mic is decent for recording someone talking in front of the camera. A boom-mounted shotgun is even better for that. It's not really just about WHAT mic you use, it's all in the whole audio recording process.

      Jared Polin The channel isn't what it used to be; that is all i say; i miss the continuity of rapid fire critiques, self-criticism, and "short" how- to's. Lately most video's are about gear soaked in a you-must-buy-this vibe. Maybe it's because you are excited about new stuff, or to keep sponsors happy but i miss the old times when everything was about making something beautiful and not about the stuff you have.

      Richard Osseweijer is correct. All recent videos are about gear (without you actually giving proper review or showing their functionality), there's little to nothing about photography. When's the last time you did a lightroom tutorial? This channel sucks, people should go to Phlearn and actually learn something from someone who wants to teach and not sell.

    • @Richard081991
      @Richard081991 10 років тому +1

      Melissa Svedson I won't go as far as saying that the channel sucks, and i still think we should be greatfull for te knowledge jared shares. However I do think that the uploads are not what they used to be. This video for instance; it is nice to be able to hear a mic and read a little about it; but the video itself is way below the professional standard, music is recorded using an inapropriate technique and there is no background information about any technical aspect. This channel is mostly viewed by starters, advanced photographers and semi pro's, I think the content should relate to their interests...
