This video helped me understand my microphone tremendously better. This having been my first ever microphone, I was completely lost. Thanks so much for the help, this made things so much easier.
For the last month, I've had my Blue Yeti set to the full room setting (not the carioid) because any time I used Cardioid, everyone said I sounded like crap. I was just so unhappy with how I sounded on this Blue Yeti. A few videos said Blue Yetis are just not good for streaming and are more for like round table discussions, so I was like, "Okay, guess I'll just stick with the Blue Yeti until I get my stream setup finished, and then buy one of those 300 dollar mics that are super popular". Well, at 1:55 you literally solved my problem. I don't know how all the other videos I watched managed to not explain I was actually speaking into the back of the mic this whole time. Goddam man... goddam. THANK YOU.
@@Domdoenbaby , I think I tried talking into different ends, but my friends said they heard no difference. Not to blame them, but I think they weren't even paying attention, so I probably should have tested it myself with playback.
@@DemothHymside you were probably using the omni-directional mode. cardiod mode, the most popular mode for streaming and gaming which helps isolate background noises takes sound from only the front of the mic. when using the omni-directional mode, sounds from all around the mic are picked up. refer back to the guide you got in the packaging or google the 4 modes.
I know I'm coming in late here, but god do I wish I had this kind of comprehensive breakdown 7 years ago. Thanks for making this information so accessible. 😊
I literally opened up my Yeti from Amazon, and was disappointed by the acutely anorexic manual. I found this awesome video and was quite amazed at well it was made. Thank you so much. I have to do recordings ASAP for a UA-cam channel and you answered every single question I had! I had no idea what the gain function did, or what side to use, etc...
Excellent video. Simple and straight to the point without a lot of extra unneeded dialogue. I'm new to this game and just got my microphone, but I did find out that I have everything that I needed. Many good tips here. Thanks so much for a well done video.
Thanks, I really appreciated the tips, while I was listening I was playing with Audacity to see the differences in what I was doing compared to your suggested. They were all spot on.
The best tips I've ever gotten. Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. As melhores dicas que já obtive. Grato por compartilhar seu conhecimento.
Its sooooo reassuring to know Im not the only clueless person here stumbling their way through the minefield that is learning about microphones!🙈 Very helpful video. Thank you. 👍
I'm about to start another UA-cam channel with myself talking and this video is exactly what I needed. I've even told people on my contact list about this video. Great Video. You won a subscriber.
Arrived here after getting excessive room verb. Yes... It was backwards 🤦 can't express enough how much this has helped. A like and sub is the least I can do!
Super informative, I had heard some derogatory reviews whilst others had the Blue Yeti at the top of their list. Your information has given me more confidence in making my decision to purchase one. Thank you.
I can't understand how many have not just tried out the different patterns and spoke into the mic and listened....this is reading comments here, not the vid which is helpful.
I always try to remember when I first got started with audio. For the most part, I was just happy to get a recording on the computer. For YEARS, I did everything backwards and incorrectly. I never knew or noticed the difference between a lot of settings or methods. Looking back, it's pretty cringy. I try to remember that most people don't have a mentor or teacher, they're just stumbling around trying to do their best.
I just got my blue Yeti and this was so helpful in directing me to get the best from it! will continue to practice as I go towards recording webinars.......thanks so very much and your video is welcoming, informative, and usable! thanks again!!!!!
I thought buying shock mount for my blue yeti, but i noticed that i have windowsill so perfect next to my desk, so that the vibrations from table doesnt effect my boom arm at all. Good video, keep up the good work 💪
Thanks a ton. I watched your video about using this mic with an XLR conversion into a scarlet 4i4, but was very happy to know its better off keeping it as a USB mic. I then watched this video, and ordered a nice kit on amazon that has the shock mount, a boom arm, pop filter and all the cable ties. Thank you for also pointing out i had the damn thing backwards. You're the best! have a great day!
Who knew? This was helpful. The only issue though is those who have volume settings on their end if your gain is turned all the way up; it really amplifies it which means you have to turn the gain back to for the microphone, or honestly maybe they just have their volume ALL the way up.
Thank you so much for this video. I bought the Blue Yeti I want to say almost a year ago and I have admittedly been making a lot of these mistakes. I just ordered a windscreen that's coming in a few days and I'm hoping it'll help a little bit, but definitely need to position it more off to the side and not directly in front of me. Unfortunately a stand/boom arm and shock mount aren't quite in my budget just yet (hopefully one day, just not today). I've been playing around with putting the mic on its factory stand on a stack of books to bring it closer to my face. I have yet to film any videos for my channel using that method yet, but it looks like it'll do for now. I used to hold it, but I am very expressive with my hands so that method was doing more harm than good in my case because I was moving the mic away from me quite a bit or it was never placed at a consistent distance or position making the audio very disjointed. Also I have been talking into the top of it or the back of it or somehow both at the same time. Oh boy. I've been a mess with this mic.
Thank you. Very informative. I just got my blue yeti today and was looking for how to properly use it to get the best sound. This video gave an excellent education in under 10 minutes. I just ordered an adjustable mic stand, foam windscreen and shock mount. I also appreciate the no cost simple acoustic "treatment" of put a towel on the desktop. I have a glass desktop it's a hard surface, sound for sure will bounce off of it. Putting a thick towel on the desk will at least eliminate that one acoustic issue and it's the one sitting right in front of me so it's a good one to get rid of.
I Always wondered why my voice was so quiet turns out speaking to the top of the mic was a terrible idea on my behalf so thank you for that tip 10/10 very helpful
The Nano is the one I bought. And it works really well. Not overly complex. Just plug and play. Learned the hard way not to install the additional Software drivers. And picking the right USB port helps too. Not all USB slots are the same. So I’d suggest knowing your hardware before you do the first setup.
Great video. Only think I would have added was a mention of Blue Voice which I think makes my voice sound better as well as it does some cleanup of background noise. The one thing I struggle with is cardioid vs stereo. Because there might be a use for the dual channels to not be identical.

You mentioned the preferred distance was a "fist" away. I record content for LinkedIn B2B video posts and didn't want the microphone in the post. Am I doomed to inferior voice/audio?
There are rooms worse than a square room with drywall. Try a square room that has smooth ceramic tile, like a bathroom. I can't stand it when people take zoom meetings or phone calls from a bathroom. It's just horrible. BTW, that windscreen isn't designed for plosives, it's designed for...you guessed it, wind. It's for air noise that passes around the mic sensor. A true pop filter acts as a speed limit for air, not stopping the air or reducing the volume of air. Good video, thanks, you hit all the big issues people make.
Thanks for the tips on most of them. However, there's one last problem that's not discussed from the video that I wish could really help me: When it came to installing the Blue Yeti drive on my Windows 10/11, I get this exclamation error on my Device Management that says it's not found (I did the reset method and it still shows it) and I had to resort to using the crummy Realtek audio jack for microphone sounds. I hope you cover that part eventually.
Extremely helpful video, you went through everything and I finally found what I was looking for. The tip about how to fix the echoish sound from my yeti helped a lot bc it makes my audio recordings sound 10x worse.
Thanks man Ive been struggling with this mic even with shock mount and boom arm. My issue was I had the gain knob almost max. Also bonus points to you for actually using the yeti for the entirety of the vid. I had to go thru several videos before I landed here because youtubers were reviewing it unplugged…and they only had certain parts of the vid with yeti audio. Cheers
I have my blue yeti since 2014 and I really love it, to this day it's my longest living microphone, I'm gonna replace it only when one day it'll eventually die or there's gonna be a bargain XLR one that'll kick its ass (or if I manage to afford a Shure SM7B) Tho, after 8 years of using it with a desk mount (not its one), I'm using it with a pop filter and soon with an arm only now, but better late than never I guess...
The tips in your video are quality advice and overall very useful. Only one thing about what you said though bugs me a bit. Thats when you said at the beginning of the video that the Blue Yeti is one of the best microphones on the market. I can't help but strongly disagree with that statement and here is why. Sound quality wise i agree that it does sound great. Unless its being played back through above average speakers that can perform to a high enough level you can actually hear the difference between one quality mic and another. That being said most people watch UA-cam videos on their phone, laptop or desktop computer. Usually with built in speakers in their phone, laptop or desktop monitor. If you compare the Blue Yeti to a Sennheiser, Rode or other competing high end mics. On the average speaker setup they literally sound so similar you can't really tell a noticeable difference between one and the other. They all sound good and have that professional sound to them. So i cant say that the Blue Yeti is one of the best mics solely on sound quality because thats really a subjective and a low bar to achieve now days. What you really have to judge what makes a mic one of the best in reality is price vs build quality. When taking this factor into consideration the Blue Yeti is actually a terrible mic. A lot of the higher end mics like i said will achieve the same professional sound quality. But they are usually cheaper and are built with way higher quality components. For 129.99$ price the Blue Yeti is marked at it has the cheapest capsules inside it that look like they are made out of plastic and hot glued together at random angles. Compare that to a Sennheiser that have all metal beautiful capsules that look as good as they sound. I don't believe in a bad product i only believe in a bad price. That being said, if the Blue Yeti was price at 50-60$ i would say you are getting what you pay for. At 130$ there are a lot better options quality wise and Blue Yeti is not even in the top 10.
Excellent video my friend. I am getting ready to start a podcast and keeping it simple initially. Is there a cable that will connect this directly to an iPhone 12? Thanks!
