Rode VideoMics are some of the most popular video microphones used with DSLR and Mirrorless cameras. This comparison of the full lineup of Rode shotgun video microphones will help you select the right Rode directional microphone for your application and budget.
I will compare the Rode VideoMicro, VideoMic GO, VideoMic, VideoMic Pro and VideoMic Pro Plus to the internal microphone on the Canon 5DMKIII.
I will then compare each Rode shotgun microphone sound test to the rest of the lineup in a single sound test.

What's up everyone?! I hope this comparison of the complete Rode Shotgun video microphones is helpful. Which would you get? Did you like it? Was there too much detail? Not enough? What did you like, and also, what did you not like? What would you like to see more of? Would love to know what you think, good or bad. I am grateful in advance 🙏 I think that every one of these is a better option than using the internal microphone on your camera. Did the sound tests help? Let me know what you think!!
What would be grat for canon m50
So honestly, they are all good choices. Did you watch the video and listen to the tests? Which one sounded the best to you? What is your budget?
Rode videomic go
To me it sounded like that one had the highest noise floor. Audio quality was good.
Excellent, a big help... quick and not boring, well done. Phil

Listening with a decent set of headphones I heard lots of hissing from the VideoMicro, a low buzz and hiss from the VideoMic GO, and slight hissing on the VideoMic. The VideoMic PRO was the first where it sounded quite clear. Thank you for this video!!
Yes, even through my iPad speakers I could hear that the two most expensive mics sounded the best.
That buzz is horrendous, glad I watched as I was going to buy one. Probably due to the power and information both sharing the same cable.
Hopefully you have also a dead quiet amp for those headphones.
* Videomic Go wasn't plugged in all the way, producing a low hum that wasn't the mics fault.
Hey Sagi! Great video and comparison! Super informative!
Super appreciate the feedback! Love to see that you keep innovating.
I'm glad to find you on UA-cam here. Great job man, you really helped me big time. Subscribed. Thanks!!!
I'm super glad that the video was helpful! Thank you for leaving feedback and for the Sub!
Thank you so much. Your comparison of the different microphones as an A/B listening test against the internal mic is the most helpful thing here, by far. Cheers!!
I've been looking at what mic to buy for months now and this is the most helpful and well put together video I've seen in all honesty.
Fantastic video Sagi! Well laid out and thoughtful. Full or pertinent technical points that should be considered highly when purchasing a mic for any purpose, especially the padding and frequency pass features. Well done fella!
Why, thank you!!
The individual mic videos will have more details and more tests. Working on those right now!
Fantastic review! I was going to buy the mic through amazon alone, but decided to use your link to show my gratitude!
Probably the clearest and most indepth comparison video out there. Super helpful thank you 💚
I’m SO glad it was helpful! Thank you for being part of the channel!
Noticable difference between the passive and active mics, but the pro and pro+ are amazing. I'm surprised at how closely your voice through the speaker matches the original audio at the beginning of this video. Well done!
Super grateful for the feedback and the insights 🙏🏻
Thank you for this video. Just picked up an EOS R today and was staring at the mics in the store. This video is exactly what I was looking for. VideoMic Pro here I come.
This was such an in depth video! Can't believe it hasn't even broke 100k views yet! Deservs a million for the amount of work you put into it lol
Wow, thank you! It really was a lot of work so I'm glad it was helpful!
Wow! I just want to take a moment to thank you for sharing all of your expertise in the camera and audio field. I am a novice purchasing my first DSLR camera and because of your shared knowledge, I am very confident of my purchases. Again, thank you.
Outstanding video! Since I am fairly new to photography (I shoot with the Canon M50 Mirrorless) I am on UA-cam daily looking for new tips and equipment. This video was by far the best Ive ever seen.
This video was so in depth and helpful! The time flew by! Thanks for doing this.
Glad it was helpful. Appreciate the kind words 🙏🏻
Very nice production. Audio tests can be very ephemeral and I appreciate your scientific approach in the reduction in variables in your testing.
Glad it was useful Scott - appreciate the feedback.
You shoot the most beautiful footage man!! I've never seen a UA-camr who consistently has perfect lighting in every shot!!! I wish I had the same gift, but I'm def getting better. I finally got a 32" Neewer Softbox with a Godox SL60 Light, got my Canon M50 internal settings just right and i'm def happy with the outcome for my next video, but of course there is always room for improvements. Keep up the great work Gee!
My man out here still replying to comments over 2 years after putting out the video. You've got a new sub in me
Thanks for putting this up, I managed to find a used videomic pro for 100 bucks because the audio on my dji gimbal camera is kind of crap
Such an underrated channel! You deserve more subs!
Thank you so much for the kind words, I am grateful for the support!
This might have been the most helpful youtube video I've ever seen. No joke. This was absolutely incredibe. TY!
WORLDS better and more thorough than any other review I stumbled across before this one :)
The quality of your videos just blow me away! Wish you all the best, see you at 1M subs :D
Thanks for the kind words Thomas! Hope the video was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks Sagi, you're very thorough and your examples make it very easy to help people buy the right product for their needs.
I'm so glad it was helpful! Thank you for the kind words!
Very interesting- all picked up a hum though. Pretty clear that the two pros are the best with the lowest background hiss. Thanks for this.
I decided to go with the Rode VideoMic Pro. I didn't think I needed all the extra features of the plus and they sounded almost identical to me. Thanks!
Fantastic comparison video, it helped me decide which mic is right for me - I appreciate the work you e put into this!
Honestly, you did such a controlled/scientific comparison on the mic options. I wish everyone was as detailed orientated in their review video, enough but not too much info. Video was a bit dry overall but the content was worth it. If I had any advice I'd work on your overall tone, bringing a bit more energy to the mix. I know you're coming at people with the same way you'd have a conversation but you're doing yourself a disservice considering the quality of content you're sharing. Bring it up a couple notches and you'll reach a lot more people. This is me being a friend because I can tell you put a lot of thought and effort into this video. Brant
Brant - I'm super grateful that you took the time to leave such thoughtful feedback. I'm constantly trying to make the better and I can see how a higher energy level can help. Grateful to have you as part of the community 🙏. Sagi.
I disagree. I'm tired of the hype and "energy" that comes with so many UA-camrs. I like this guys mellow vibe and clear message.
Sagi. I think you should overall bring down the energy in the video, also up, also, down, maybe u cld try record mic support for things like breathe of fire, fire dancing, also book clubs & charcuterie Tuesdays. Jokes aside, appreciate the video. Thanx 👍
By far the most useful video for rode microphones I've found on UA-cam yet! Well done. I really appreciate you making this one!
So glad it was helpful! It was a lot of work to make, but I was trying to really let people hear the difference.
@@TechGearTalk I can imagine, must have taken ages. 2 years old but still the most informative video on rode 🎤 that I've seen. Will definitely be forwarding to my friends and anyone interested in mics/ UA-cam set up etc.
🙏🏻
So interesting. The micro outperformed the go in terms of sound quality, IMO, but then the standard videomic and up showed steady improvement.
I agree but only because there was something wrong with it - it sounded like an earthing problem with a low buzz - might have been a bad cable or not quite plugged in (I'm guessing the former). But I was very impressed at how well the cheapest one held up which was good because I already ordered one! :)
Wow! Great Video! Really helped me make the choice! Thanks for taking the time to make the presentation so thoroughly!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for being part of the channel!
One of the best reviews I have seen to date. Great job!
So glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this video. I bought my camera second hand and it came with a videomicro. Today I was browsing on a second hand store and saw the rode videomic for $99 AUD. New it retails for $188 here in Australia. I wanted to watch some reviews first before making a decision, and so glad I did. The videomic pro is only about 40 bucks more expensive here than the videomic and the quality is nigh and day, just the noise reduction makes such a huge difference. Your video has convinced me not to go for the videomic but to wait till I can find a videomic pro for a good price. Thanks so much!
So glad I was able to help!
One of the most loved channels, MKBHD level of dedication.
Keep up the good work bro.
Appreciate you!
This comparison video is above and beyond the best🙏🏽 thank you so freaking much 🙏🏽
So glad it was helpful. Thank you for the kind words and support!
Very very helpful! I learned what I've been hoping for in the last year & a half time. Thanks.
Outstanding review. Extremely helpful. Cheers from Australia.
Not sure if I should thank you for this amazing video, as you just convinced me to spend an extra 150 bucks to get the Pro instead of the micro! But as I'm about to film over 400 short videos that I have to edit and audio correct myself (and I'm NOT very experienced with that), it's clearly going to be money well spent. Thanks so much for the excellent quality and format of this video, subscribed!
So glad I was able to help you make a decision. Good luck with the new project!
Wow!!! This was some serious detailed information and now you're making me wanna step up my mic to one of the more professional Rode mics!
All in due time! Those last two sound really good right?
@@TechGearTalk lol yes they too! Great video man!!!
It's endless.
wow! what a well spoken, clear and great video production review.
Really helpful. Thank you ;)
I really appreciate you taking the time to watch and for the kind words. Thank you for joining the community 🙏
DUUUUDE! Thank you so much for this! I almost bought a Video Mic Go, and I would've hated myself for doing so. I'm definitely going for one of the Video Mic Pros. Thanks again!
Super glad it was helpful. It's possible that my GO was defective, but it's the only one I've ever used. You will NOT be sorry about either or the PROs.
wizdumtv which one did you end up getting?
Great video! Best RODE comparison video I've seen
Thank you for creating this fab and informative comparison video. I monitored with headphones for the full experience. I haven't read all of the other comments but couldn't help noticing the hum with the "Go" version. I suspect the unit may have been duff and it would be interesting if you have since tried another? Ps - However, that said I'm sold on the Pro after your test, which is amazing since I really only wanted the entry level on. You should be in sales !! - Thank you. Peter.
* Videomic Go wasn't plugged in all the way, producing a low hum that wasn't the mics fault.
Great information as always. Whenever I am thinking about buying extra gear for my camera or help with my camera setting, I know your videos will be reliable and informative.
I'm super glad this video was helpful and am grateful for the kind words about my videos 🙏

@@TechGearTalk very well deserved! Cheers
Amazing comparison video- thank you so much for the work!
Glad you liked it Kelcy! Hope it was helpful. Thanks for being part of the channel!
Damn man, that was a GREAT comparison video! Very educational and extremely well thought out, in great detail! I have a Tascam digital recorder that I use on my GoPro because I think the MediaMod directional mic isn't quite "full" enough for me and I was thinking of the Go2, but the slightly bigger videomic has the fullness I'm looking for. Gotta carry both on me though in case I'm looking for a landscape scene or a detailed one haha. Keep it up, great job!
Oh yes. As soon as I saw that you had a video on this topic, I knew this would answer all my questions. As always, great work!
So glad to hear it!!! Thank you for the kind words!

Excellent review. Thanks!
High quality video! Excellent content.
Damn, this was super well executed review / comparison. Much appreciated!
So glad it was helpful!
This was such a great video!
I just bought a Nikon Z50 and I want my audio to be just as beautiful as my pics and 4K video!
This really helped me to pick a definite winner :)
I loved how at the end of the video you kept playing what all the mics sound like so our ears can really hear the difference.
I'm probably going to get the viodemic pro plus!
Thanks and take care
So glad this was helpful and that the last demo was useful! Enjoy your Z50 (love that camera!). Appreciate you being part of and supporting the channel!
Great audio in your video. Could you please share a detailed video on how you do audio processing in post?
Fantasic comparison man, well done.
So glad it was helpful.

Awesome, hopefully it's helpful.

Extremely detailed video, best one to date.
Oh wow, thanks so much! Appreciate you watching.
Superb review. Thank you!
Great review. Unbelievable production quality! The picture quality is like eyecandy. I would like to see what camera do you use but even more the lighting is the interesting part because that is in my opinion the most important factor, after you have a decent camera.
Why is there this low hum with a couple of the mics? Is it just quality issue, because the most expensive ones have less of that?
This video was very informative ....... very informative .... thanks for taking the time to make it. It helped me a lot. You have a new subscriber.
So glad that it was helpful - welcome to the channel!
Always love your videos. Great job.
I appreciate that - so glad they are being useful!
Rode should be paying you for this video. Very impressive work. I would ask next time you do sound test with camera about 6 feet back from your mouth. This is to emulate a talking head video or podcast style interview. THANKS for your work 👍👍👍
Great comparison, thanks!
Appreciate the feedback Sam - thank you for helping.
can't imagine the time to make this, u gat a new sub! keep it going!
Ha! Most people probably didn't realize how long it really took... But I'm happy with what it shows and I know a lot of people are picking between these mics, so I was hoping to help.
Wow very interesting!! I was going to buy the VideoMicro, but after watching your video, I went with the VideoMic Pro :) Just bought it with yout affiliate link, thank you for your videos! I just subcribed, I'm sure I will learn lots of new things hehe :)

@@TechGearTalk I ordered an M50 Mkii and Rode Mic Go after watching your videos. Thank you for all the info!
I was bought a Røde VideoMic Go for Christmas as I wanted to upgrade from ME. I haven’t tried it yet but after watching this, I’m already thinking of an upgrade! 😅
Thanks for sharing! It's possible that the one I had was faulty. Super interested in what you get out of yours. Regardless, either PROs are excellent!
Really informative video, thank you. Where do I find the video with the more in-depth review of the mics?
didn't know I needed this video but I thought it was a great comparison
Super appreciate the feedback 🙏🏻
Amazing review! Thanks 😊
Awesome video , thank you for making it , it was very helpful
Recommendation for worship music recording? With instrument like drum, base, piano, guitar, and mic/singing in the same room. Room size bigger music/living room. There's about 6 or 7 feet between where were standing and the phone
Great video and outstanding professionalism
Thank you so much, I’m very grateful for the feedback. Which mic did you like best?
nice video. very clean, high quality production. keep up the good work. pls what mic did you use for this main video recording?
Great job on the video. Helped me a lot.
Glad to hear it! Which mic did you choose?
Great job! Hats off!
Good video man, super informative keep it up! well executed :) Thanks BRANT
Appreciate it Brand - Hope it helped you decide.
I read a bunch of reviews on the videomicro vs videomic Go, which all said just go the micro, watched some videos, they sounded pretty much the same. But watching your video I now think I should have ordered the videomic Go.
Thank you for the good information. I have a Rode-videomic and i like the sound, and after listening to the different tests i think that the rode-videomic is a good choice for the video's that i make.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience. I'm super glad the video was helpful!
Insta subscribed. Thank you! I think I'm gonna go with the videomic, unfortunately I can't go beyond that price, even tho the pro and pro + are amazing.
I’m so glad the video was helpful. Thank you for being part of the channel!
Such a great review!!!!!
Brilliant review! Well done sir!
Glad it was helpful!
Man the first shotgun mic you used sounded quieter than the original camera mic, that makes me rethink even using the same cheap one that I have on and some people have complained that they can barely hear …. I definitely want to look into buying a higher quality mic, any suggestions?
I did not know that with mono/stereo ...you learn something every time 😎
Thanks this was very helpful and I think I am going for the PRO one.
You're very welcome - so glad it was helpful. Good luck!
Great great comparison, many thanks
Glad I could help. Thanks for being part of the channel 🙏
Thanks for this video, AWESOME!!
Thank you for your thorough explanation about the mikes. My personal conclusion is that the more money you invest, the better the sound, so I'll stick to my earlier gut-decision of getting the Rode videoMic Pro (€166,00). Thank you again for your brilliant comparison.
You're very welcome Micaela - I'm glad the comparison was helpful. If you buy the videomic pro or videomic pro plus - I can't see you needing to replace them at any point.
Thank you very much for this video!!
