ATV Off Road Fury 2 & 3 for the PS2 + F Zero X and San Francisco Rush on the N64 are racing games that still hold up for me.

Oh neat to see the Dark Reign review. Most of the time EP didn't seem to review strategy games and such, or even PC games in general as much.
I was blown away by dark Reigns graphics and pioneering features and cool units and was one of my first big box in store new release purchases. It turned out to be a flop though. Both for me and for the public. It was just missing something. For one thing the story was bad, but a lot of people played RTS without caring about the story. It might have been due to a weak multiplayer platform? Or maybe the balance was off, because I do think the balance was off despite never playing multiplayer.
Like the game was not at all _bad,_ it just felt lacking compared to the info you hear about it and how good it seemed without playing it.
It launched before Starcraft so it's not like it was even a direct victim to it either. Although Starcraft did come out soon after which would have snuffed out any flame it still had at that point.
I found it odd how they talked about it as if it was just a copycat game where if someone has played one they've played them all. That's like saying if you've played a racing game you've played them all, or a hockey game, or an FPS, or a platformer, etc. Yes gamers like innovative gameplay, but 95% of what players _choose_ to play (and what gets made) is the same stuff that they've played before. Dark Reign definitely innovated on RTS, just not in good enough ways, and/or in sacrifice to other important elements.

Dark Reign looked incredible to me back in those days. The smooth lighting and shading, the 3D overview compared to 2D RTS, just so cool for its time.

Actually I must be thinking of a sequel because the one they reviewed looked 2D.

Yeah there was a sequel that was 3D. I don't even know if it was by the same developers though (I just checked, it was not. Auran Made the original while Pandemic made the sequel), but it wasn't particularly innovative at all. I think it was a mediocre game from what I recall, even worse than the original. I just checked a bit of info on it and it sold _terribly;_ apparently only sold 10k copies s in the first two months.
