200 Mile Voyage w/ No steering From Key West to Marathon to Fort Myers

  • This passage is easily our least favorite to date. The excitement of being underway was extremely short-lived because I discovered we had no steering. With my autopilot digital controls still able to steer the boat, we decided we could continue heading towards Marathon using just the auto pilot systems, and engine shifters. This was not an easy situation and the abundance of lobster traps scattered everywhere along our route created lots of stress and difficulty.
On day two with the majority of the lobster traps behind us, we managed to wrap one up in the 1 spot we were warned has grounded many boats... The red bay bank, just beyond the 7 Mile bridge of Marathon. We drifted tangled and disabled briefly, and we are very grateful the winds were in our favor and pushed us away from the shoal. Pressing on, we reach the coast of Marco Island and decided to pick up our speed, and adjust our course to avoid a massive storm that was coming down in the Naples Fort Myers area before arriving in style at our destination.
Thanks for watching. We hope you enjoy the video!

Team Wiff is simply our names combined (Will & Tiff). Together we are on a journey to get the most out of our lives, while avoiding being trapped within the societal norm.
What started it all was the idea of living on an affordable boat in Florida for a year. In May 2016 we bought a 51ft Bluewater coastal cruiser which was a powerboat meets houseboat. We lived at several marinas in the Fort Myers area and quickly learned the ins and out of living aboard.
We apparently liked it. Instead of buying a house, we ended up with a Sea Ray 480DB. We think it’s arguably one of the best boats to live aboard. This boat has allowed us to get a taste of the cruising lifestyle, while we’re still working and living aboard full-time, in Fort Myers Beach as well as Key West.

The lobster traps in the lower keys. Are impossible to navigate. Some idiots also paint the buoys black to really help the situation lol

Hey, everybody's had a track like that coming in to a dock at one time or another! I say I'm just having so much fun I don't want to tie the boat up.

I have a set of tracks like that on the plotter...and that was with functional steering!

Quite the journey! It’s amazing how many pots are permitted to little the byways on the water. I’m guessing you were low on steering fluid causing the wheel not to respond. I had a similar issue and now keep extra on board. As far as the choices. I’m guessing a combination of wind and steering issues had you going in circles, but sure looks like you ran aground at one point! I hope not!

    B. Because otherwise your boat can maneuver on land or hover... That would be amazing tho

Excuse my ignorance... What happens if you run over a trap?
