Nitro Engine tuning is probably the most asked question on my Channel, people struggling with their tuning and asking tuning related questions. In this 4 part series, I look at Tuning and adjusting the High Speed Needle, the Low Speed Needle, and the Idle speed screw. Please check out the other three parts of this series and gain a better understanding of how to tune your nitro engine!
I fly nitro planes, but your tutorial contains excellent tips as there are only very slight design differences. Your communication skills are absolutely fist class. I don't think I heard a single 'err', well done and thank you.
By far the most informative, well explained tutorial I've seen on nitro tuning. I only wish he could tune my Alpha 28. It would be set for life.
You wouldn't be set for life as unfortunately nitro engines don't hold a tune very well ;)
You have the most relaxing voice I have ever heard
Very handy information mate. Not that I've touch the low speed screw, i can rest assured which one it is now 😁 i have a rough idea but even more so now after your tutorial. Thanks buddy
Great video,Josh,I learned a lot from your early videos,a good reference point, and this is a worthwhile update. These engines can be extremely frustrating but persistence brings huge reward,I don't think nitro is for everybody but I hope they're around for a very long time yet, great satisfaction when you get it right with amazing sound, speed and smell.👌✌👍😊😁
I don't think they are going anywhere, but big R/C Companies such as HPI , traxxas etc, certainly seem to be focusing their time on electric models. HPI haven't brought out a new Nitro model for years!
JT12's R/C Videos Yes,I agree,it seems to fit in with the instant gratification style modern world, the only Ready To Run models you could get when I was a kid were the cheap and nasty toy style models, nitro cars were extremely expensive then, electric cars fit in with this modern world, plug it in and go with no effort,to me,it's bypassing a large part of what the hobby is about.
I have the gx15 engine it has no lsn which is a bit of a pain
Very clear explaination, very well done.
Great video and really well explained, thanks for sharing Josh, much appreciated
Explained very well. This Lad would make a great teacher!
patronising wankbag
The low speed needle or idle needle affects the entire range of the engine. The high speed needle does indeed control full open position but the idle/low makes a significant contribution to the high speed setting. The mid-range transition unfortunately is a compromise between the low and high rpm. It's often where the engine runs the poorest. Having some experience with nitro helicopters, certain engines have a third mid-range needle to obtain a better transition. Not seen in gasoline or smaller fixed engines.
I agree with A the G, except for a glaring omission in presentation - no subtitles. Thanks for the vid!
Great tutorial Thnx
You're welcome!
I love such videos, thanks Josh!!!!))
Glad you like them!
What's the 4th brass screw on the carburetor thanks
I got a old one I want to restore the needle on it though just keeps turning is it meat to turn endlessly or is it meant to stop when fully open?, it is a 2004 tamiya NDF-01 thunder , pull cord is broken and needs new fuel pipe and glow plug and not sure about this valve and hope the problem ends there as any spare parts for it seems costly
Inside the valve there is an O ring that sits round the needle, I suspect it has gone
@@TheRCBiker thanks for reply I was just bring too gentle it turns s out it now tightens ha , but now I stripped engine to clean but the sleeve has a notch but the engine block has no notch to line it up with so not sure which way
Thanks for the series! My problem is that I made the mistake and messed up the factory settings needles in my force s15 engine and can't seem to find them anywhere. In the engine manual says that both needles should be 2 - 3 turns open from bottom but the engine won't start like that. Can't manage to get it running. The engine is brand new, couldn't do the break in procedure hence I could not start it. Can you help me with some advice?
Havent watched the video but I bet its good. My point is, where were you when I was 14 and had no clue how to tune these fuckers! ahah still in time to help newcomers.
Thanks :) more videos coming soon
Sick video
Thanks :D
I've watched your vidoes and still having a hard time. I have a rb c4 in my ofna ultra lx-one
Ughhhh I am having one hell of a time with the low speed and high speed never used one before twin needle and it's driving me batshit crazy hahah😅
Hi first of all thanks for your videos they have really helped me out over the years top man. Just wondering if you could help me out I've just bought a macstar .28 engine and it didn't come with any default needle instructions and the needles look way out just wondering if you know the factory defaults for this engine ?
Hi there! Glad they've helped
This document gives you all the info you need about the Mac 28 www.cmldistribution.co.uk/diagrams/HoBao/Engines/HB_Engine_settings_MacStar_28.pdf
I wish the default settings were as easy to get as others. I have just finished re-building of a vintage Hobao hyper 10 Touring car and i decided to by a brand new Hobao hyper 12 engine to make everything stock but my version came with a bog standard carb that only has the high speed needle and not a low speed needle so when i have tried to check the default settings from the manual that came with the engine it says open carb 6x 1/8th turns from closed which is only one and a half turns from closed but a much better detailed manual for the same engine is saying set the high speed needle three and a half turns? Also that manual has a different carb showing a high end and low ends needle whilst the version i have is different as explained above? So now i have two different recommended settings? Either i go with the manual that came with the engine (6x 1/8th turns from closed) or the better detailed manual from the hobao site saying three and a half turns from closed? I have managed to break the engine in with the default factory settings and ran 5 tanks through it on idle to be on the safe side but now i am trying to tune the engine it seems far to rich for three and a half turns out from closed but way to lean if i go for the 6x 1/8 turns? So now i am going to buy a better carb with both the high and low end needles in the hope that might solve my needle setting problems. Wish me luck lol
I wouldn't worry about what the manuals say and just tune it for performance. How it runs best is how the carb should be set :)
Thanks
No worries, glad it helped :)
Good video but one error the idle needle is not a needle but a stop that controls both air and fuel.
What is the screw on the OTHER end of the carburetor? The one opposite from the low speed needle screw. My engine only has 1 needle screw of the side, and it's OPPOSITE of the throttle linkage.
If you only have 3 screws, the one opposite the linkage is the low speed. It’s in the same place as the midrange screw on a 4 screw carb.
When breaking the engine in and doing the 5 tank engine break in does it have to be driven or can I have it be on stands ?
It needs to be driven for tanks 2-5
@@TheRCBiker thank you for your reply, videos are great keep them coming 💪🏽
Hi.Do you know how to stabilize the Mid Range Needles crew because it comes out continuously?
The default settings of the Mid range needle is usually flush to the edge of the carb body for most engines. It shouldn't really be adjusted.
If it keeps coming out I assume there is an issue with the threads! You could try threadlocking it in?
Thanks for the prompt reply. I will try it.Regards.
Epic video! How did you grow your channel? I've been trying over a year now and I only got 175 subscribers. Also just got myself a arrma talion.
You'll get there. upload regularly and have consistent videos :)
JT12's R/C Videos okay thanks.
Please please help my nitro stampede when I give it throttle it just revs up and does not move what can I do I hit a curb yesterday
If you've hit a curb it's probably knocked a driveshaft out , or maybe even stripped the spur gear or differential gears
I have a metering screw on my Associated MGT 8.0, what does it do ?
My car just runs without the glow plug when I turn the low speed needle about 2,5 turns in. Isn’t this too much ? I mean it runs well so far but I don’t want to damage the engine due to too lean mixture.
Hi could you do a video on the Kyosho fw06 please It won't start and I think it's got to do with the tuning not really an expert on these type of things thanks
PES EVOLUTION I would check the glow plug and set the carb to factory settings and go from tjere
is that a hyper 7 or hyper SS?
I've gotta nitro buggy with no pull start. I just put a bit of string on it and it's a tug and go
Are you putting the string on the one way bearing or the flywheel ? :)
JT12's R/C Videos I was just putting some string on the front of the car but that is a good idea lol
Damaddog rc pl
????
Lol I thought my low end needle was my idle needle, and I really messed things up
I have a backwash 1.10 just took it out of the box i carnt get the fuel to go in the carborator. can you help.
Try unplugging the fuel line that is connected to the exhaust and blow (push air) on it with your mouth. This will create pressure on the fuel tank and force the fuel into the carb.
LazyRock thanks worked first time.
No problem, glad I could help!
Next time just put your thumb over the end of the exhaust exit while pulling on your pull start and it will prime also. But also the blowing into the tank trick works great to
What about the brass screw below the HSN?
That would be the low speed
But what about the idle mix screw?
hiya and I was wondering if you could help me I have car that I can't seem to get running right and when I think it is running I am back at the start again many thanks
What's the issue?
I can get it running and when I start to use it and open the throtle slow it is OK but when I smack it open it will not run
When engine running wheels start spinning can you help
Yes, the help is in in the videos
what's the problem if a nitro rc revs up or revs on its own when lifted on the ground?
Sounds like the idle speed is too high. That's the next part of this tuning series
JT12's R/C Videos I already adjust the idle screw to its lowest that almost shut off the engine.
how was that?
I had a weird problem with my nitro car once where we had set it up so it would idle nicely and then all of a sudden is went full throttle on its own with no input.
Carnifex666 your receiver was tuned to a different frequency
What if an engine doesn't have low speed needle like gx15?
Then just tune the needle you have. It's easier :)
What would happen if my high side is too lean
Potentially more power but will run hotter and will wear out quicker.
what if u bought it from some one and it doesn't start at all , no matter what u do , carbs not tuned at all and it won't start
Base set needle so when at fully open need 1mm away from base. Close fuel mixture till it stop dnt force it. Then turn out 2.5 to 3 turns. Set low speed with power off n u pressing on throttle linkage side tords carb hole. Turn screw till it has a small gap in throttle. One its starts u got adjust all rods. Just delt with this on an ofna
Why is my rc car smoking a lot?
