This is awesome, thanks 👍 I did watch your full video on this prior to this video. But this one just gave me more confidence that I was doing the right thing yesterday during the break in process on my Losi 8ight Buggy, my 1st nitro car. That's exactly what I noticed, that as I adjusted my low needle, the rpm went up so I had to adjust the idle needle to lower the rpm. In my case of course I was trying to run as rich as possible to keep the engine lubricated. But I managed to get it to run rich to the point where it was spitting oil from the pipe & yet not stalling. I also made sure to heat up the engine prior to starting it & to maintain the temp while idling. I then let it cool between tanks. Was able to get 3 idle tanks in. Now she's ready for slow figure 8 break in runs. Thanks for these amazing 'how to' videos! 😎👍

People over complicate nitro tuning.. I agree on the "Factory settings" not being the best method comment .. I prefer sound, temperature and feel..! I'm digging the JQ UA-cam channel!! Dude knows his stuff and it make sense when he is explaining something..
This video makes it look complicated for reals. It would be so much easier just to take off the air filter and look at the gap in the carb. Should be couple meters gap. Instead he is making things complicated tuning low speed and idle the same time. Car sounds like its gonna fry the motor. Too lean in my books.
Purpledonatello that’s bad advice for multiple reasons. Taking the air filter on and off needlessly increases the chance of getting dust in the carburetor. Using digital calipers to measure the idle screw depth like JQ shows is also faster and more consistent/accurate. You can measure the depth of the low speed needle and high speed needle using the same method. Having a ball park of where all the needles should be helps beginners tremendously. Beginners sometimes have the needles off by entire turns and therefore they can’t even get the engine to stay running so that they can begin fine tuning.
@@3DaysTillGrace. Taking off air filter to check isn't gonna hurt a dam thing. So okay mr. (Putting the eyes of fear to the public) well why not turn off the engine and take off air filter check carb measurement? How common sense is that? No beginners are gonna have tools on hand " digital capiler" to do all that bologa. Its a better understanding to take off the air filter and check the gaps in the carb if your gonna mess with the low speed and idle where it is complicated. The more its open the car will rev high.
purpledonatello JQ is trying to make setup easier not more complicated. Most beginners are completely lost on how to tune an engine. Most barely touch the low speed needle and just lean the high speed. don’t even touch the low speed needle. Even with a high idle, the engine is prone to flame outs, which is something that plagues beginners. JQ is giving a simple measurement that if you put your idle gap at, then you tune your engine with less skill or thinking. I think most beginners would really appreciate JQ’s measurements for idle gap. Adam Drake giving race tune measurements for high speed and low speed needle settings has also really helped people.
My biggest issue is getting the idle to drop down after coming to a stop. This was a huge help I am getting back into Nitro, not racing because the closest track is over an hour away, but I will be picking up an HPI WR8 Nitro Subaru Impreza to mess around with. If I can get enough people interested I have room for a proper 8th scale track and I will build one

Very good video JQ as is all your videos. For years I always thought you were supposed to have the double idle we’re it was supposed to drop in like 10 seconds. Anyway great video and I’m going to try your tuning method. Thank you!
I am gonna try this on my Hobao Hyper 21 engine; I always had problems with fuel buildup during idle, if let the car sit for more than 10s and then floor it, it would start to bog and most of the time just stop running. The manual says a 1mm gap is correct for idle, but I think that this is just break with rich settings now; gonna try 0,5mm next time. Thanks for making these videos!
In life there is one important lesson you must learn and accept. Life is not fair, credit and $$$ do not automatically flow to people who actually make a positive difference. Most of the time it’s actually the opposite.
something to keep in mind is that the high speed needle works "on top of" the low speed needle, that is to say the low speed needle is still having a small effect even at full throttle. Another thing is, I don't do this personally but some people will set up their two-stroke engines, chainsaw/weed eater/dirt bike etc to load up (rich) and eventually die after 30 seconds idling. They use this as a safety measure and it could also be an idea for an RC car if the receiver battery dies or the car goes out of range
@@ArtietheArchon no the low speed needle does not have an effect at full throttle on these engines. And no you cant set it to load up after 30 seconds as it would be so rich that it will not work consistently on the track. If you want to be safe set the high speed needle slightly rich, and use a failsafe.

What’s the purpose of the metering needle? How can you tell for it being out of tune?
To adjust the mid range, faster or slower rev increase
Great vid. What temp should the engine be before I start tuning? And where’s the best spot on the engine to temp it?
The glow plug is the best area to check temperature.

Because if you tune the engine through iteration you will end up with a 0.5 idle gap. Its the right size for our engines and fuel.
