Can I just say I was literally thinking about getting a Digitone earlier today and hesitating because I was worried a 2 would come out soon, and I just saw this video right now
Digitone 1 has become one of my desert island synths. I love it so much, and it's made FM sound design so easy and fun - almost like if a subtractive synth and FM synth had a baby. Some of my biggest requests were an extra LFO and more FX - and they delivered, with so much more including a drum synth too! Now debating whether to replace my DN1 or have both in my setup side-by-side 😈
Every new synth should come with a bank of playable sounds. The supermarket keyboard bank. The Elektron I sounded great but out of the box there was very little you could jam with without getting some weirdness. I get people don't buy these instruments for that but it's nice to have without having to build them yourself.

This is actually a very cool upgrade. This makes the Digitone a legitimate one box option of you wanted to get into Elektron. There's some undeniably great new things but for me, most would be wasted. Far too much to learn in terms of new workflow when really i still need to learn how to actually make music. For now im totally happy with DT2, ST and Dn OG 😊
Elektron is clearly making the choice easy for everyone. If one need one groovebox of a kind it can be taken. I like syntakt , also because I have already samplers and fm synths, but unfortunatelly version 2 of syntakt will not come before years, if ever it will come.
Awesome demonstration as always man. I said the same thing on your Digitakt II video, I’ve always liked Elektron but the hardware always seemed like a riot to use. The little changes and updates in workflow etc have clicked with my brain for some reason though and I’m finally onboard hahah! I really liked the Digitakt but I love this. Definitely on the list. Thanks dude.
Ah man, I've been admiring Elektron's boxes from a far for years, always hesitant as no single one quite satisfied enough to justify the cost and time to onboard to workflow. But this new generation has now pushed me over the edge, got this one on pre-order! Thanks for the in-depth, super useful as usual Mr. pop.
This is going to be so much more useful with my linnstrument than the DN1. Being able to set what tracks work with control all will be a blessing as well. Such a massive upgradr. Have preordered.
No GAS on this - and my Digitone Keys is my second fave piece of kit... From my side, I think my GAS is partly cured as Ableton has now ticked nearly all the boxes I need in my work (& improved its own workflow a fair amount in recent years). Nothing can beat the nice feel of a physical box, nor the Elektron workflow for quick ideas. But as I'm not seeking to waste money on a daft DAW-less thing, I'm pretty much at the level of complexity I'd like. No need for more. Such a weird feeling guys.
Thanks for the video🎉 I would still suggest the MPC Live 2 as another option. It has my favorite fm synth and is way deeper IMO. I bought it on the used market for $800 and it was the best money spent ever on music gear.
MPC is amazing. I have been having awesome moments with the digitakt 2. They are just so different. I have not tried the MPC 3.0 firmware yet as I’m still having fun with 2.0. I’m lucky enough to have the MPC se x . And the thing I love is the outputs inputs. I have been playing with so many guitar pedal setups. But I digress. For simpler and focused grooved digitskt 2 is great. I may be tempted to get the digitone 2 so it has a friend and very portable jam box but not in any mad rush.
Now the Syntakt sits in a very weird spot... its relatively new, yet missing functions like the 128 steps, which are unlikely to come as a software update. But its also too new to receive the v2 treatment. I feel like they should have started upgrading the hardware/software with the Syntakt, releasing Digitakt 2 and Digitone 2 after that.

Isn't the Note Edit doing the same thing? Since you can add up to 16 notes per steps, it sounds very flexible. I don't have an OG digitone so maybe I'm missing something.
@@droussel7359 It matters how you want to interact with the Digitone. I use chord mode (MI-Marbles -> B-VCMC -> E-Digitone). Looking at the DT2 manual this isn't possible. Just weird!

Wow! What an upgrade. Never was interested in the DN because it was only 4 tracks so I got a ST but I feel like sometimes the sounds are lacking… 16 tracks of FM! wow wow wow, what an upgrade! might just have to trade in my syntakt for this baby, I feel like I can do similar things the syntakt does with this and then some!
Very nice video and thanks for playing the factory patterns. I was thinking about getting a Syntakt next but it seems that Elektron always release a II or MKII (but not a III), so it seems that the best way to be future proof with all of their products is to skip the og and wait for the II.
Just recently got a Digitone Keys, cannot do without it as the FATAR keybed is aces, bonus is it has a nice FM synth inside with 8 separate outs. It makes for some nice percussive elements that I could not do without, DTII is a great addition for someone who wants that all in one encompassing groovebox, I am just happy the Keys exists in the format it does, it's an amazing piece of kit. Thx for the upload.
I also have a Digitone keys. I am soooo torn on trading it in for one of these but I just can’t imagine getting rid of it and I doubt they’ll make a v2 keys. It’s such a perfect instrument other than midi arp, retrig, and parameter slides. But man this new one has 3 lfos and that comb filter is just so insane
I also have the Keys. I tried getting rid of it but no one wants to buy it so I'm stuck with it. After being stuck with it, I've incorporated it with my very minimal set up. It has a very good key bed.
Same cons as in digitakt2: 1. No solo track function (why I must mute all 15 tracks to work with just one? Rytm 2 have this function) 2. No slide trig mode (for smooth filter sweep for example. Rytm 2 have this function too) Hope they will ad this in future updates.
Such a massive overhaul. The original was cool but always felt like the most limited of their modern boxes due to the limited voices and pretty limited sonic palette compared to something like a monomachine or the syntakt, this now feels like it has as much sonic range as those boxes with the new machines, filters, 16 voices, filters and effects
I was going to get a Digitakt 2, to replace my OG but I'm pretty much sold on this. I think it will work really well alongside my Styntakt and I'll keep the Digitakt OG. I'm more about melodies than beats and have missed polyphony - was amazed by the piano sound you got. I think the machines will take some learning, but that will be a positive thing for me.
Loving the new drum feature. I’m been seriously considering buying the Modor DR-2 because I love its sound so much but I think this’ll give me the that world + more digitone, and at half the price!
Wow. I own a digitakt and really like the Elektron work flow, but am not a huge Fan of the sample based workflow. Thought about getting either digitone or syntakt in the past, but both had (different) limitations like monophony and no arp on the syntakt, also limited melodic possibilities - and only 4 tracks on the digitone, so i didn't get them in the end. Now this is exactly what i was looking for - and even more. So i have to buy this. Only half way though the Review so far and there are many small things that i was not expecting like the Piano Sound, and prepare Mute.
Digitone is one of my all-time favourite synths and this new version looks amazing. Alas, since I am poor, I will take solace in the fact that my now outdated model still has colourful buttons.
Great overview 👍 Does the arpeggiator have a hold function that can be used per track as a performance tool? i.e. can you let arpeggios run on different tracks while playing other tracks manually or using the sequencer? Also, Digitone 1 could not arpeggiate external Midi - this is a much requested function that was never implemented by Elektron. Is it now possible? Also, can the sequencer trigger arpeggios, i.e. you record chords into the sequencer, and when playing back they trigger the arpeggiator?
Thanks! No hold function for the arpeggiator unfortunately, but you can run a different arp per track and it will "hold" for as long as you hold the chord or set the chord's note length in the sequencer. No arp for external MIDI.
@@loopop Thanks! That's a pitty. On the Digitone Keys there are extra arpeggiator controls, and I could play a chord on one track, hold it, and switch to another track to play a lead sound while the arp on the other track was still running. But at least, as you say, on the Digitone II I can have multiple arpeggios running at the same time on different tracks when using the sequencer to trigger them. That's great news for me.
Oof, this will cost me. It’s fixed everything I didn’t like about my Digitone (4 tracks and 4 voices being the biggest gripes but I also didn’t like the coloured buttons or screen colour and I’m thrilled about the new engines, extended sequencer etc)
don't sweat it Digitone 1 is a very powerful machine and already does more than it needs to earn its place in the studio. so unless its your only piece of Gear in your studio, so maybe don't take a hit selling it, unless you actually need the additions Digitone II offers which is also $200-300 more expensive just like Digtakt II was...
It’s basically a DT2 with different machines/engines. Being digital they could probably also implement them into the DT2. But of course they won’t for profit reasons.
Well this is awesome. I now have next to no use for my Digitakt which I use mostly just as a drum machine. Going to replace it and my Digitone with one of these!
The synth engine deserves a dedicated synth module/keyboard (remove the sequencer) with a bigger screen, less paging around, more synth engine dedicated control knobs/sliders and maybe a second pair of audio outputs. This could be Elektron's competitor to Mini-freak, Korg Op-six or Hydrasynth desktop/explorer in that case.
Like the digitakt 2 , this is just a straight upgrade of the original digitone. I wish they made one box that could be either synth or sampler and just called the digibox or something.
Obviously, we all have to buy this. The question is... WHICH BOX IS NEXT? Do we sell our Octatracks now, or will it be the AR or AF that gets the new version next? The only "safe" boxes right now are the Digitakt 2, Analog Heat FX, Digitone 2, and Syntakt. Every other Elektron box is up for debate as to when its replacement will drop. I just had to sell my Digitakt (in mint condition) on Reverb for $480. Heartbreaking, but that's what they're going for now. The real pain is going to come if they sneak up on us with something like an Octatrack 3, and we're all trying to scramble to sell our Octratrack (or AF or AR) in a market flooded with used units. It's difficult for me not to want to peel off my EZBot template sticker now, and put the Octatrack up for sale. I know I'll get $500 less on the used market if a new one drops.
@@BrendonBrooks Better and more reliable OLED screen (or go back to LCD). Better more reliable buttons (old mk1 had much more reliable buttons!!). More processing power.. for instance add a 3rd FX slot.. granular stuff.. the euclidean sequencer etc. etc. Tons of things they could do..
Some people have to save a long time for one of these boxes. Losing a few hundred dollars because you sold it at a bad time isn’t the end of the world. If your money is tight you do not need to upgrade. Sorry if I don’t have that much sympathy for your “dilemma”.
The 128 steps in the new machines are already worth my consideration for Elektron. Never being interested in a 64 steps with parameter locks and so on ... , and now waiting the turn of Syntakt (my favorite elektron device) in few years, which I aspect to get 16 tracks as well and samples player as the digitone got also VA synthesis. ( 6 Digital + 6 Analog + 4 Samples tracks would be for me IDEAL )
Thanks for another awesome vid! Definitely a lot of improvements. I can only hope we'll get a Digitone Keys shortly. The only question I have remaining is if we can finally use the Arp on MIDI tracks?
The perform kit function would be incredible on the Syntakt. I've had to develop my workflow around a single pattern for a whole set partly because of the lack of this.
Two questions I didn't think I saw addressed - 1. Does the arp do midi now? 2. How many preset banks? Same as og? Not mentioned on Elektron's site Apologies if missed... I have ADD so I do miss stuff
So many updates that make this a must have for me! However, looks like there is still no randomize on the arp or way to randomize note order in a pattern?
I hope Elektron will allow us to record or lock the standard controllers that u need a keyboard otherwise to use properly. U should be able to record a modwheel or aftertouch control assessment that can be set up in these modules... With the knob in those pages imo.???
A limitation of the OG Digitone was that the Arpeggiators were not allowed on the MIDI tracks, only for the internal synth. This was addressed in the forums for many years, but Elektron seemingly wanted that feature only to be in Octatrack. Is it now possible in the D2 ?
@@loopop Thanks for the quick answer. Isn't that unbelievable ? Would anyone buy the OT instead of DT, just b/c it has MIDI arps ? I mean, I would understand if DT hasn't any arp. But it has...and every DT update is awaited eagerly, with "Arp4midi now ?" - but no...sad story, like (the missing) step editor for arp and seq in montage/modx.
Got my DG1 a few months ago - for around $500 US (I'm in New Zealand). I'm not clever enough to ever hit the ceiling on its possibilities, and actually really like using trigs and parameter locks to load up tracks like submixes (I was used to that workflow from the Model: Cycles)… sometimes simpler is better when it comes to live performance. the Euclidean sequencer and the compressor are cool additions though (as is the kit management), hopefully they could code the euclidean into a DG1 firmware update?
Oh gee. I bought ther DT2 few months back. Now seeing this i realize i miss even more than before to have some serious synth in the Dt2 Basically if the DO2 would have 1-2 stereo sampling tracks it would be a one stop workshop for portable music making.

Good lord those factory patterns sound fantastic.
Yeah, way better than any of their other devices. I wonder who they got to do them.
I'm going to upgrade. Not because of the increased polyphony and tracks. Because I hate the yellow screen on the Digitone I.
Dude...that is a hell of a machine! Ordered!
Wow. Some of the drums really sound like samples. That piano is wild. Had to order.
First thought when I saw the thumbnail of the video: “Oh wow, Loopop is late to the party with his Digitakt review” 😅😅😅
Same thought! 😂
Better late than never!
😂😂😂
same lol
Track Layering was in the OG, it was under Unison...it does fun things to tracks with Arps on them!
Wow this is intense.
D2 + A4 + OTMK2 seems to be the holy grail option. Such a versatile rig
…and half the size!
bliss is being content with what you have. wonderful upgrade btw...wonder if they'll do a keys version
As always, you are the man with the reviews
as DT2 owner i must admit that so much possibilities/tracks requre a lot of brain work to control everything))anyway..great update
Elektron, quit with the gas induction and give us an A4 update! OK, obviously, I want this too!
I agree. Wayyy overdue. They only updated the firmware over a week ago because of Overbridge. Whoopee doo!!
that's good that I've sold my Digitone before the announcement :)
47:04 Sounds straight out of a Depeche Mode album
Idk if anyine answered this ine already but track layering is available on the OG. Its configured through the unison menu.
Whew thank goodness, couldn’t find your video at first lol. God I’m excited.
Very good performance, loving the B77 too, this video made me buy a Digitone 2.
I think Elektron’s digital filters sound better than their analog ones. This seems like the ultimate groovebox to me. Can’t wait to get one!
I was like what could they improve, 30 seconds in I felt stupid for even asking.
That piano sounds really good
for real. sounds like a sample, amazing
Digitone is one of my all-time favourite synths and this new version looks amazing. Alas, since I am poor, I will take solace in the fact that my now outdated model still has colourful buttons.
Thank youuuu for another wonderful vid. I hope they add parameter slide
Perform Kit mode was the only thing the elektron needed and I was the one thing that alway made me sell elektrons, but this seems like a keeper.
Cool patch showcasing the mute feature performance upgrades
I love my digitone. Definitely upgrading
A lot of the percussive sounds coming from this sound like the korg volca drum. I've always wanted an adult sized one of those!
Great overview 👍
Does the arpeggiator have a hold function that can be used per track as a performance tool? i.e. can you let arpeggios run on different tracks while playing other tracks manually or using the sequencer?
Digitakt Compressor and Retrig in it too I believe
Oh man, i just bought a digitone 1
and it will serve you well!
I did too, but I figure by the time I have it all figured out (years, probably), the DT2 will be more affordable...
It may not be as powerful, but tbh you will always have the better looking version. The green OLED is just so classic.
don't sweat it Digitone 1 is a very powerful machine and already does more than it needs to earn its place in the studio. so unless its your only piece of Gear in your studio, so maybe don't take a hit selling it, unless you actually need the additions Digitone II offers which is also $200-300 more expensive just like Digtakt II was...
It’s basically a DT2 with different machines/engines. Being digital they could probably also implement them into the DT2. But of course they won’t for profit reasons.
Was waiting for Loopop!!
Well this is awesome. I now have next to no use for my Digitakt which I use mostly just as a drum machine. Going to replace it and my Digitone with one of these!
Thank you Loopop 🙌🎹🖤
Time to buy an used digitone i :)
Those new fm engines are going to be a lot of fun to play with drum pads.
33:25 bit crushing animation spot on
The synth engine deserves a dedicated synth module/keyboard (remove the sequencer) with a bigger screen, less paging around, more synth engine dedicated control knobs/sliders and maybe a second pair of audio outputs. This could be Elektron's competitor to Mini-freak, Korg Op-six or Hydrasynth desktop/explorer in that case.
Usually i dont like listening to elektrons preset patterns but these are fun. Theyre super late 80s rpg sounding lol
44:24 is an amazing tune.
thanks :)
@@jambonmama I also subscribed to your channel. Any recommendations for similar style?
Great video! and a great upgrade, thank you!
Like the digitakt 2 , this is just a straight upgrade of the original digitone.
I wish they made one box that could be either synth or sampler and just called the digibox or something.
Maybe the leaked Elektron Tonverk?
Will be interesting to see the prices of “old” elektron gear in 15-20 years
This isn't really a healthy way to think about tools that all make music. You don't necessarily need to upgrade
The OT Mk2 is perfect (at least to me). I'm not sure how much more you can change on that box without making it something completely different.
Sadly no
Thanks! No arp on MIDI tracks :/
Noooooo! 😭
Man oh man, literally the biggest thing I miss when using my Digitone - what a gamechanger that would be!
The perform kit function would be incredible on the Syntakt. I've had to develop my workflow around a single pattern for a whole set partly because of the lack of this.
Two questions I didn't think I saw addressed -
1. Does the arp do midi now?
2. How many preset banks? Same as og? Not mentioned on Elektron's site
Apologies if missed... I have ADD so I do miss stuff
1. Indeed I didn't mention that - no the arp doesn't send MIDI
2. At least I did mention that one :) Same as OG
@@loopop cool.thanks Ziv.
I wonder what the limitation is. It's something we all want is it not re arp!
Is it now possible in the D2 ?
no unfortunately
@@loopop Thanks for the quick answer. Isn't that unbelievable ? Would anyone buy the OT instead of DT, just b/c it has MIDI arps ? I mean, I would understand if DT hasn't any arp. But it has...and every DT update is awaited eagerly, with "Arp4midi now ?" - but no...sad story, like (the missing) step editor for arp and seq in montage/modx.
Hi ! Both a take your time.
Deeper sound exploration with DN2, 2 simpler machine to begin with, VA style.
Oh!!! Hoover finally comes to Elektron 🤘🤘
Ok. This thing needs smooth motion sequencing. Being able to have an ASR envelope in the LFO section would be pretty dope too. I want this thing.
hah! the moment I saw this video drop, I preordered. Cant wait.
Oh gee.
I bought ther DT2 few months back. Now seeing this i realize i miss even more than before to have some serious synth in the Dt2
Basically if the DO2 would have 1-2 stereo sampling tracks it would be a one stop workshop for portable music making.
this is a beast ! ❤
never went on Digitone OG 'cause I was unsure about FM .
the new engines and enhanced capabilities are great!! I'm loving it
It's always been more than just an FM synth, but this just cements it as a monster.
