You and I would be fighting over the natural fiber fashions. Linen /cotton in a pink shift was a grand find, the challenge will be to find how best to resuse the material. This is truly my favorite part of thrift store hunts...show and tell!

My latest 'Could Not leave without' was a roll of white Sillk Dupioni. $8! It's on a roll and 60" wide so no folds or real winkles. Gorgeous. I think there's about 8 yards on it. I want to dye the pieces that I use. I've been doing research on it. It's just simply wonderful.

Vintage sewing machines! My hubby thinks I have a problem but only problem I have is a lack of space, lol. Seriously though, I love jars of vintage buttons. Each one is like a little treasure chest, you never know what you’re going to dig up, and I find sorting them very relaxing.

I'm a new subscriber and I took your advice. Started looking around my local thrift store. Guess what I found. I found a whole bolt of interfacing for$4.99 and a whole bolt of wool crepe for$5.99. I thought that was a steal. I said to myself that is such a great idea❤

Oh, that doily!! And the tablecloth....the lace!! Nice haul 👍🏻 I love old linens and I always look for them when I’m at a garage sale/estate sale. I recently refurbished an old suit case and wanted to find a couple vintage hankies to place inside. I mentioned to my friend & neighbor, who is in her late 80’s, that I was wanting to find a couple for my project. She proceeded to present me with a beautiful silk brocade covered box, and it is full of vintage ladies hankies! Probably 15 or so; I couldn’t believe it!! I felt bad about accepting it, and she said no one in her family wanted them and she wouldn’t take any money fir them. I still can’t believe she gave them to me, what a treasure! Thank you for the idea to check thrift stores, I can’t wait to go check it out!!

I went to my favorite Good Will store because I needed more retired lady shirts. Of course I stopped at the craft area where they have fabric and “stuff”. I found a beautiful dark red, 10 meter(!) Silk Sari, heavily decorated all over with Gold! It must have been a wedding Sari. They didn’t know what it was and the Pali was folded to the inside. Priced at $7.99! US

Sheryl F , I belong to the Society for Creative Anachronism. The idea is to recreate (read that as recreate, not exact copy) the Middle Ages as they should have been, I.e. minus plague, famine, and permanent death (dying on the fighting field is common, but you are expected to come to dinner that night and fight again next day).
Creation of clothing of the period is highly respected. I love Byzantine, Italian Renaissance, and Tudor, as well as any other period with glitz and flattering for short, curvy women, with Tudor England my favorite, although, for sheer Glitz, Several of the Italian States can’t be beat. 10 yards means I should be able to do large parts of outfits from all three of my favorites. Sadly, today’s fashions for a middle class retiree don’t present much scope for such beauty. Which is the reason I love researching and creating something from before 1603 (death of Elizabeth).

Leah Regier if you live in the US, buying Saris from India on EBay is incredibly cheap! 5-6 yard silk ones can be bought for between $12.00-24.00 with free shipping from India!

😍 those buckles... and the gorgeous eyelet lace. i have so many buckles mixed in with other items, i really should go through and put them all together. As for the old metal zips, I had a customer back in the early 1990’s who would have been 80+ and she preferred to wear these vintage “girdles” that were almost industrial in their construction. I think they were from the 1950’s or earlier and had been repaired many, many times over the years. I can distinctly remember trying to track down some particular heavy duty metal zips for the repairs (which pre internet days was no easy feat). I last saw this customer in 1994, but I still think of her when old heavy duty zips pop up in my vintage habby hauls.

If there was ever anyone who looked like "a kid in a candy store", you are it in this video! Thanks for sharing your finds and your enthusiasm. Once I paid $5 each for two sewing boxes FILLED with all their original items: Thimbles, Needles and threads (of course), Iron-on transfer patterns, Scissors, Seam rippers, Measuring tapes, and all those other little bits 'n bobs one keeps in a functioning sewing box. Now that was fun! Sometimes I'll find a particularly nice piece of material in both fabric and pattern and will use it to put matching border on both top sheet and pillow cases to make an eye-catching set ... this can be a remnant, a sheet or pillow case(s) or even a piece of clothing. One project I am hoping to finish soon is changing the curtains in my bedroom: I have a pair of floor-length sage green soft fabric curtains which were left in the house when we moved in (nothing wrong with them and I like the color so have just been saving them until inspiration hit me) and I thrifted a king-size pillow sham which I bought solely for the absolutely gorgeous shell pattern (I don't even own a king-size pillow but this was one of those things that simply said "BUY ME") in the same lovely green as the curtains and I am going to use it for the valance. All that with a sheer under curtain. I am going to improvise the valance by sewing it directly onto the curtains so I don't have to use a triple rod set which I think will be too overwhelming for window. Yeah, I have hordes of lace too. For me, that wide lace you purchased would be nice as a hem trim on a slip. I love making half-slips from batiste and giving them elaborate lace trim in contrasting colors. *Sigh* ... your video and my looking at what I have to work with has made me create a list of projects to consider or finish up on. One of the things I like about repurposing already sewn pieces is that often there is little or no sewing, i.e. a full flat sheet makes for a nice shower curtain; all you need to do is button hole it ... and a second flat sheet can make matching curtains or any other lovely trim you might like to add to the room. Okay, this is getting lengthy ... be well and keep those videos coming.

I like the lace beading and Irish Crochet style doily best. That doily is hand made with size 30 or smaller thread. It needs to be washed in hot water and color safe bleach, towel dried and ironed dry. If it seems too limber, starch it and iron again. You can block it with pins on cardboard after starching if you prefer. It will make a fluffy Fichu if you weave a white ribbon to make it ruffle. The chain picot pattern is beautiful, and in my estimation, by far the best piece of lace there. It is hand made and lovely. The wide rose motif lace looks like bridal lace, and is my second favorite. The linen blouses are catching my imagination. Can't wait to see what you do.

I reuse zippers (particularly metal toothed ones) as often as needed. Which seems to be a lot.
May I recommend that before use, to wash/dry first. Then steam iron the tapes with starch. This makes it So much easier to insert into your garment, as you've returned the zip to nearly new condition.

Beautiful circular tablecloths are something I always keep an eye out for because it's so easy to transform them into such beautiful, floaty skirts. And so much more affordable than buying a large enough piece of fabric to make a seamless circle skirt - and the fabric doesn't come pre-hemmed!

I make stuffed animals, dolls, doll clothes, and children clothes, I would love to find linens/lace/buttons for making the items. Most of my lace stash is handmedowns from other people who know about my obsession, people who find little baggies of lace like you found and they give them to me (sewing peoples are the best), The nice thing about the cheaper lace's, is you can put them on doll clothes and little kids really don't notice that you've used something cheaper, they just love the frills! I have several tablecloths and a BUNCH of handerchief (linen with hand embroidery), saved up to make either a quilt or some doll clothes with. I LOVE finding hand embroidered things for so cheap (people have no idea the time and love put into this stuff), and adding this to your own craft just makes it more special!

I would never pass up vintage buckles and lace/trims. Luckily the thrift store I go to a lot has their fabric rolled up with rubber bands so you can open it up. i acquired some sewing notions from an estate sale about 10 years ago. i paid $40 for SO MUCH STUFF!! i gave away, sold and donated a ton of fabric that i could not use. i've had the lace boxed up since then (i'm thinking she must have been a lingerie maker? based on the types of lace). i finally got around to cutting foam core boards to fit my file cabinet and then wrap the laces in groups on the boards. i must have 20+ yards of some of them. she used newspapers and magazines as "spools". the newspapers were from 93 (in fact , the day i was doing it, the newspaper was dated the same date, but in 93). one magazine though was dated 1973!!! some items are obviously on the newer side, but others were definitely the better/older nylon from years gone by. there were even a few that had smaller amounts that just may have actually been handmade. some nice cotton crocheted (by machine) were included too. i've thought about maybe selling some on ebay as i have way more than i could ever use. there were also old zippers. seems like there were some still in package from the 40s.
i'm enjoying your vintage thrift sewing supplies videos.

Love your enthusiasm and joy you bring to discovering the treasures in the Thrift stores. I'm that way too. I have not been out and about much lately due to covid, but they finally lifted most restrictions here. I shop thrift stores for 'fabric', often sheets, tablecloth and things too for weaving twined rugs or make other items. That doily with the four corners, the one you show just before the shirt is a breadbasket liner. I made quite a few of those to place inside of a small, shallow wicker basket filled with buns or things like that. I lost weight the last few years and kept some of the clothes I love to refashion. Like you, I LOVE linen and all natural fibers. I also love to reuse what's there already. I just discovered you on you tube a few days ago andI look forward to see more of your videos. Evelyn, it was such a joy to find you. As an Aussie who is an avid op shop and thrift store shopper, most of my wardrobe is "preloved".
I've only recently come across the CosTuber posts and all of you beautiful, creative and clever people have inspired me to sew a 1930's day dress for my Phd graduation in a couple of weeks.
Hearing you chat through your haul, your enthusiasm for all things vintage is inspiring. I grew up with my mum sewing the 'good old-fashioned way' with natural fibre fabrics and precise finishing, and I despair at the modern, disposable, nasty construction. It's a delight to see and hear someone with such passion for quality with economy.

I would also like to see what you are going to do with theese beautiful beltbuckles, maybe new belts ? They would be so nice with a vintage dress. And your wide lace that you call your 'lucky find" is wonderful.I have a lot of this kind, white, beige, black which belonged to one of my grand-mothers, with several pairs of lace gloves. I think they are part of some bridal dresses. Some years ago, in a vide-grenier I had the luck to find for quite nothing a lot of beautiful handmade laces which where made by the nuns of a convent. About 3-4 weeks ago I stumbled into a Goodwill store. I simply wandered around looking for crafting eyeing different bags. No fabric, but I kept on. Suddenly 2 bags I thought were just full of crafting hay became: vintage sewing patterns!!!Bought them, took them home and went through them. The best part of the haul? Several Vogue patterns from the 40's, 50's, and 60's!!!! In fact there are 3 patterns I will actually use. The rest are pretty ripped or tattered up, but some I can re-create. I love thrift stores; I could NEVER pass one up!!!

I buy a lot of fabrics from the thrift store. I'm always on the lookout for old buttons. I've been known to buy a jacket just for the buttons and then re-donating the jacket. I've bought pants that are way too big just because they are made of silk and because they are so large, they can be taken apart and recut to fit me. Bags of scraps can be used for quilting, pocket linings, small bags, hey, even wrapping for special small gifts! I love the tablecloth you found! As far as small bits of lace, I like to add it to store-bought clothes to make them uniquely mine; at the top(s) of shirt pocket(s), sleeve cuffs, hems of dresses, shorts or pants, even along the buttonhole placket of a shirt!. I also have a pair of thrifted jeans that the manufacturer cheeped out on outer pocket fabric and the lining shows so I can't wear a shirt tucked it. I plan to put some lace to hide that faux-pau.
Video tip: Try to remember not to shake your hands when you are showing us something in your hands, it really kicks my vertigo on.

This is my first time viewing your channel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Each of the proposed projects would make a lovely video. I don't think I could stop where you did with your purchases. I would be hard pressed to stop if I found that many sewing supplies in the thrift stores in my area. So many videos I see of hauls makes my mouth water, lol. The stores in my area do not have much in the way of sewing supplies or smalls, they mostly have clothing. I won't have trouble remembering your name; it's the same as my mother's sister. God bless sweet girl and happy creating. Sherry from Alabama

I got an entire shoe box full of vintage rick rack and various other sewing stuff for $1. I was stoked. Now I need to have a project to use it on. The rick rack ranges from teeny tiny to normal size in their original packages. Plus snaps galore. My husband just didn't get why I was so excited.

Many years ago(maybe 30?)I decided to use up some of my vintage ric-rac and embellished a 3 tiered navy blue skirt. It is similar to a patio skirt but with all sizes and colors of ric-rac. I also embellished a 3-tiered white skirt(more recently)

Dear Evelyn, I really enjoyed your last video about sewing supplies from the thrift store and this one! Thank you for sharing!
As you asked if we do want to have a video where you explain how to "feel" the quality of fabric I have to say:"yes, definitely".
I also want to meantion, that here in Austria I never heard that people do use old vintage patterns for wrapping up their presents. I was quite irritated, when I heard that and I really hope not too many patterns are lost because of that.

Hi Evelyn, those types of cotton laces were used by my mother as trim for cradle and cot sheets in the 1950s and 60s. They look so familiar to me.(I am the oldest of 7 so I remember a lot of what was sewn for me and my siblings.) thanks for another interesting video.

I love it all best 😁. I would love to find a crinkly doily like yours to put down the front of a dress. That will look stunning I think but as it’s handmade I am thinking, it’s unique. Which is good and not so good 😂
I to go for quality fabric these days. I never really thought about it before I met you and learned to sew but now I notice fabric quality all the time. My favourite is cotton, linen and the other day I picked up a hand made curtain which was made of gorgeous fabric. So that’s a definite refashion.
The lace is beautiful. You did so well
Thank you for sharing. For me that is the last bit of fun on a thrift day is the show and tell. You did soooo well. 😘

What a fabulous haul. That pointed doily is wonderful. I can see splitting it in half and using it as a 'cap' sleeve on a sundress with the points hanging down front and back. So pretty. I would have a hard time choosing one thing that I would not have left behind. If I had to it would be that Navy Linen skirt. That is a fabulous find. I like the idea of leaving the bottom ruffle only. The other ruffles could make a smart jacket for over a white blouse.
Wonderful. Thank You for all of the wonderful ideas.

Oooh linen is a wonderful fabric. Im learning to hand weave with the goal of weaving my own eventually. I love the idea of something that gets better as it ages, and linen does!
I havent been thrifting or garage sale hunting in forever, but youve inspired me! Need to study more on hunting for quality items in general, so your fabric video is perfect but dont be afraid to go all out! 😄 How to tell quality glass or mother of pearl buttons. Those extras that say "very nice". The metal zippers are a perfect example!
That is machine made lace. It's been industrialized for some time because it is incredibly tedious to make by hand. I make bobbin lace and that large panel of lace would take....so long. 😬 Weeks and weeks, months actually. It's beautiful though! I sometimes save bits of machine made vintage lace to try and recreate it. ☺️

I wish I could find sewing notions at thrift stores in Miami. Funny enough I find a lot of knitting yarn 🧶 . I go often and made myself a number of clothing outfits from great fabric I found at the thrift store. Even great linen from table clothes and brocade curtains I used to make a steampunk Victorian dress etc .Anyways, love your videos!!!

Hey! I've been binging your channel in the past few days. I might be buying a used sewing machine tomorrow and I went thrifting today! I got a bed sheet (100% cotton) to practice on and a few pieces of clothing that I might want to alter. Your channel has been very helpful in giving me the push to start my new hobby! You hit the spot with " buy it in bulk". I had laugh! I was told if you find a great deal to "Buy it cheap and stack it deep!"
My "toss it out" idea, being able to tell the difference in quality material/fabric vs. the crapola stuff.

Late to the party, but you appeared in my recommendations, and so I started binge watching your content! Great stuff.
A few months back, I found a bunch of “new” vintage metal zips and bias tapes with all the original packaging! I almost don’t want to open them, just on the novelty alone. Graphic design on old packaging can tell us a lot about the era in which they were made.
Here in Japan, there’s a lot of old mom and pop shops in residential neighbourhoods, so it makes it easier to find new old stock. I’ll grab it when I can.

I used to thrift with my mom and we would look at pillowcases, pillow shams, skirts/dresses and things like that to re-purpose into bags or purses. She made some really beautiful bags out of the finished pillow shams because they already had beautiful edges they were already finished for you and the other side was already a Lining of sort.

I love thrifting for sewing/knitting supplies, I rarely buy anything new! The other day I got some fabric (I still have to decide if it's viscose or polyester, if it'll become lining or a blouse), thin pink trim (that goes perfect with the fabric) and a gadget I'm not sure what it is - my first thought was a thread cutter, but someone guessed that it's a distance for sewing buttons - I'll try if it's sharp enough to cut thread, otherwise I guess I'll start using it for buttons!
