MTX really stepped up their game back in the 90's when they came out with the Thunder 3k, 5k, & 7k series subs. I bought two 15" Thunder 3k's back then to use as home stereo subs and they worked great. At $90 each they could dig deep and had decent spl in 3cuft sealed boxes running off an old 100w/ch integrated amp.
My uncle has a pair of 12s just like these in his cobra gt from like 20 yrs ago and he still won't part with them and they would slam so hard off an 800 watt alpine and in a sealed box at that. Brings back good memories💯🔥
Dude I absolutely love old school car audio. If i could get the mtx 15 rfl man id be in heaven
There is only 1 reason to have an RFL, and if you don't put it in exactly the right box it doesn't do that well either.
@@EMFAudio well of course if i had my fav ssub from back in the day. Got an expedition the appropriate box would be built. Got one of the best box building guys in the game. Trust itd be taken care of nicely
@BASSN SANE and not so much about the sub as it is the box. As ive said before ive seen my dude make some spl 12 inch $25 subs sound like oh my gawd. Thats a real box guy
@@EMFAudio but if it were you what would you put the 15" rfl's in?
Do you have the parts on hand to rebuild those? I have a pair and one needs rebuilt.
Man that's reminds me of the black gold 12's I had that look almost the same but inverted logo dust caps.....sweet sounding subs and good times long passed
I had 2 of these 12s on a Thunder 2300x in high school. I loved them.
You had a thunder 2300x!? That's a unicorn. I'd love to have one. I wish I bought one back then because I can't seem to find any today.
@jodyzung6455 yes. Found it at a pawn shop for $150 in like 1999-2000. Perfect condition
I had that Sub back in 1999 in a Sealed Box. That MTX was hitting soo hard..
I had two of these 12s on a crossfire amp, loved it before it was stolen.
After seeing this I am 100% positive you could recone my Lanzar LP15's.
Man. Takes me back!
Oh man those bring back memories. Had a couple 12s on a crossfire amp. Wish I still had them.
I had 2 gen1 t4000 12’s they were very musical… everything was back then.
Mannn that hurt my heart when you started cutting I to this baby!!! I had a pair of these 15in 7000's back in the late 90's early 2000's and they were animals on only 500-750w I honestly cannot think of anything made today that could possibly be as loud on such little power lol mine were 8ohm and the pair were wired to 4ohm so I doubt I was even giving them 100w each clean yet you could hear me from the other end of town and I'd pull up setting off alarms and shaking store windows hahaha man them were the days
I loved them and subs those are great subs to keep around for a rebuild.
I used to have the MTX thunder 2300 amp and 2 of those 12s, i wish i still had it all.
I’ve always wanted a set of the 9500’s. It’s crazy how far subs have came with now having 4-5 inches peak to peak of throw as opposed to 1-2 inches peak to peak. As always love the videos.
I think the 9500s were the blue thunders from circuit city. I remember there were road thunder two's and Thundercasts. Then the 3000s, 5000s and 7000s from good guys and the blue thunder lines but they were all pretty much the same. Actually now that I think about it the 9500 came out way after the 7000s.
I remember I made my first car subwoofer box 30 years ago when I was like 12 for his car. It was 2 road thunder two 10s in a 6 cubit foot porteed box that we had to cut with a hand saw cuz my dad wouldn't let me use the circular saw. We cut white pvc pipe for ports and pushed them with a flea market 150 watt Jensen amp. That thing bumped hard though cause the box was so big. Lol. Those were the days.
The 1500x would push the crsp out of two of those subs.
@@ryry7886 heck yesh man , great memories 💪😎👍
Sean your the man,old school for the win ,I just pulled out my 4 old exite 10,s when this video came up ,what a cowinky dink.
Synchronicity's!! 💪😎👍
You did a fantastic job on these rebuilds, my friend. Very happy with the workmanship & pleased to see you took such care with the dust cap alignment. Will definitely be doing more business with you in the future.
I had some old roadthunder 8s and blue thunder 12s back in the late 90s!! Thats how i got started in car audio!!!
I had 3 MTX 9500 10s on a 2400 watt amp loved them. The subs never blowed it just kept blowing the speaker wire going to the coil. I fixed one of them but than the other 2 done it so got different subs
My first pair of MTX subs were road thunder 12's with polypropylene cones. Back in 88 I think.
Love watching you rebuild subs 😁 it was because of your videos that I built up the confidence to recone my own speakers. Keep em coming
I had two of these 12 inch subs in my 1994 Ford Escort hatchback and they hit super hard for the amount of power I gave them, also a pretty small sealed box.
I had 6 of these in a 4th order on 2 RF punch 500m amps in a 1993 hatchback civic no back seat no wall build it was loud for back then. I had 2 mtx black gold 15s also great sub for the time.
Black Golds were great subs and so were these 7000s. The 7000s sounded really good in a big, sealed box.
I had one of these in a 1987 Toyota Corolla hatchback on a 500w California Profile amp. Shit slammed.
i love my old MTX 12 it hits so hard
Now it’s an EMFMTX. ☺️
Nice to see some old subs getting used! good video
The Thunder 7000's were in MTX dealer catalogs for the 1st time back in 1998 ! When a cases of them first arrived we stacked them in the warehouse next to the shippers main computer. By the time we noticed, the magnets on the 7000's had zapped our shippers newest computer monitor. Mybad ~
I ran two 7000 10’s each in their own box, with a huge kenwood mono sub amp, bridged. In a regular cab truck back in the day. Yes old school, but man that was hard hitting bass for the late 90,s couldn’t keep my rear view mirror on the windshield.
Make fun? Hell I'm proud to see you using that many clamps. Most people wouldn't bother. That extra few minutes of work will give it years more operating time without failure.
TAPE LINE/CIRCLE FTW!!!!!! Trick known with stainless steel grind techs. I use it alot. Sweet rebuild on those subs.
Awesome rebuild, EMF!
I just got one of these and a 7500
I'd like to see more of this old school rebuilds.
ALL the clamps .... I like it
Nice rebuild vlog! You make it look so easy!
Dude lots of glue that's what Rockville needs to do
That doesn't make a coil not bake.
Great video
I just build my first mtx 7000 10"
It's was THAT AND ROCKFORD POWER...that were big boys..back yonder...plus couple other companies that had some..but MTX and Fosgate!! I had the 3000 1⁵" subs..back in 2000ish
I enjoyed watching the rebuild of the sub, I did not understand how to get the voice coil depth measurement though. Thanks. John Medrano
The center of the coil has to line up with the center of the top plate.
@@EMFAudio Thanks for clearing that up, I will also watch more of the other sub build videos that you have posted. John Medrano
Thanks for another great video!!!! Looking forward to trying a re-cone on a few older subs I have at the house. THANK YOU!!!!
I love old school MTX - still rocking the hell out of a Thunder 2300 amp and I have AAL/MTX gear in my theater. Old school Road Thunder 2 for the subs. I recently re-foamed a pair of 15 inch American Acoustics Labs (parent company of MTX founded in 70s) home speakers I got. The cabinets were NOS in the original boxes, still sealed. Holy shit did these things look like garbage. Maybe 10 ounce magnet, 1.5" voice coil, back plate screwed on. They sound good though, I think they were rated 70 watts RMS.
Hang on to that thunder 2300! It's a unicorn. I'm looking for one but can't find any on ebay or any used markets.
YES SIR!!! Old school FTW!!! AWESOME VID as ALWAYS!!!
EMF Audio is in Spartanburg, SC? Thats where I was born!
That we are!
Excellent Video.I have old scool 80s 15 inch Pyle Drivers n 12 inch Cerwin Vegas ,sadly they didn't take much power back then. They still bump though,Cerwins hit lows very nicely :)
I wanted one when I was a kid
I had two 10” Pioneer subwoofers back in the day(mid 90’s). It hit pretty low.
Great job... EMF
Theres just something about recone vids that is just nice to watch. im sure they are a bit of a pain/time consuming to make the vids, but relaxing to watch. thanks for the cool vids and keep up the good work!
A 1 hour job turns into a 5 hour job when a video is involved, sometimes more.
Nice my favorite older sub was the 2001 MTX RFL 15 competition sub that handle 2000rms watts from 2001!!
Those things sounded terrible! They were good for 1 thing, taking a lot of power on a burp in 1 specific box.
@@EMFAudio I never owned one so your probably right.
@@EMFAudio yep the 7000 was a really good SQ sub that sounded great in sealed box and still got pretty damn loud. The RFL (Really Fkin Loud) were just as you said. Only good for SPL burps. I prefer musicality in my speakers.
Man I remember when if you had just one MTX 7000 you needed toilet paper because you were the shit! As a matter of fact I wanted them so bad that years later I tracked down a few and they were outdated severely but it’s weird when you wanted something so bad even if you know now it’s not top of the line doesn’t matter still gotta have them! My son has them in his car now still playing strong!
That’s a bad ass sub
I have a aluminum cone Mtx 7500 12" and its pretty beefy ! Bummer that its only a single 4 ohm coil 💪😎👍
Oh my God I love these vids 😍
Thats an awesome rebuild!
Wouldve been cool to have done an spl test on the original woofer before and after the rebuild to see what difference, if any, it made.
yeah whats the point if fixing some thing if it is not broken...
@@Mr_Meowingtons woofers can get worn out and sloppy when everything softens up too much. It will sound better for certain when comparing a used 20+ year old sub to one with all fresh soft parts (spider, surround etc) and coil.
@@Mr_Meowingtons the point is to make a video showing how u rebuild a sub.
I have some decade old Alpine SWR12D2's that still work but are starting to sound scratchy. I know Alpine doesn't sell cones. I know I can get coils but I'm reluctant to try being that I would have to try keep the cone and dust cap intact.
Nice video dude!
Good detail and informative!
Great content Sean. Thanks man.
Awesome as always wanna rebuild 2 old school alphasonik 12s for me
If you're willing to fund it, I'm willing to build it.
Did you steal that tape around the dust cap idea from me lol. That's exactly how I've been doing it for years. Nice build.
It’s just hard to imagine today’s subs being that much better than these were
There are quite a few advancements you don't realize.
I was with yah all the way until the dust cap, I usually just make a pencil mark then put some glue on the cap, line up the mark and a small bead around the edge
I don't like the look of a bead around, and it's not as strong either if that's all that is used. If you have it on the cap too it's basically doing nothing. In doing the tape you can make a clean glue line.
@@EMFAudio clear e6000 can barely tell I do it on the cap and around the outside both, people do it differently I guess
Had two of them in 15s 😞 wish i would of kept them
Awesome👍
Love the channel man
Some glue dissolver would work great on remove old glue joints
I think you could have squeezed another clamp in! Great video man. Been learning allot
Not that it's to many clamps but why do you have so many? Great video
That wasn't all the clamps I have, I have enough to do two 15's at a time, because they're used often.
Great rebuild ...what power was it originally and what is the new power rating etc
I think they were 400 RMS originally, I don't put power ratings on things I didn't design. I get power ratings by testing them.
used to own a pair of 10s on a lanzar 1000w...haha
Took all that time tapin around that cap, clda just used pencil an traced the cap leaving a circle on cone ;) Wlda taken 5secs and glue goes right over it and hides the mark
Then you have glue stick out around the cap because the flange is narrow, which looks bad.
Damnnnnnnnnnn 👍👍👍👍👍👍🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺👍🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺 sweetttttt 💯 🔈🔈 never new this
98-99 I had 3 of the 5000 tens
I've not ran any of MTXs newer stuff, wonder how it performs. I've had some 2003 Thunder 4500 10s and they sound pretty good!
I've got some 2001 and 2003 Thunder 8000s as well as some from around 2009 with the carbon fibre looking cone (T812-44) and they all rock. I also have a couple of these Thunder 7000s in 12" size, single 4 ohm voice coil.
I never knew rebuilding speakers was a thing.
I remember the blue thunder series was always a good sub for entry level. Not back when they would mass produce from China.
Robert Fattaruso The Black Gold was excellent too. My dad still has his 12” BG124 sub in his car. Very nice box, came with a plexi window in back with white filler showing the magnet...sounds great too!
I thought blue thunders were great I had 2 12s
@@djhaloeight were the good old days on car audio. back when streetwires was the best brand of audio and power cable you could buy
Still no idea when we'll get the Sundown story ?
Why is that basket ridiculously similar to the sundown basket 🤔 had to go to the legends of bass MTX and get some advice I see!! Great work tho love watching videos
It's because that's no manufacturers basket, it's been around for decades and it's open tool.
Contemplating using 6 15s basically new old stock in my build wonder if someone makes an upgraded drop in like this in case my taramps 8k is a little too much jam lol
What's is the clear spray you spray on your glue?
Is this the same cone and coil that's in the SA12V1?
How much does it cost to have them reconed? Can any speaker be reconed?
What would you charge to recone Technics SB 7000 15-in drivers and mid-range drivers I think they are 4-in
Can i recone a pair of old school mtx blue thunder 8's the first generation with the rubber surround?
Where do you buy parts to rebuild older subs like Orion XTR dvc 12’s?
How much to reconnect a 15 in. Sounds qube 3:5 dual call ? Or where can I get good stuff to do it with..at a low price ? I'm in texas
now im thinking about getting my Orion xtr3 15s rebuilt.. hmmm🤔🤔🤔
the legendary EMTX sub?
my skar sub is getting like 1,500watts rms and it's rated for 800 rms and it stays Cold probably could put 2,000 watts or more to it
You might be surprised how much power your sub isn't getting. I have a feeling you have a 1,200 watt amp somebody told you makes 1,500 watts that you want to think it makes 2,000 watts but really makes 700 watts.
How can I get recone parts for my soundqube 15 in 3.1s at .need help on that bad .thanks
I used to bang them blue MTX thunders
Could you have not drilled some holes on the basket for cooling? Or would that have some sort of negative effect?
Holes don't necessarily mean cooling, and the motor has to be designed to circulate any new air introduced as well.
Where do you get all your voice coils cones and spiders I have some old power acoustic mofo Subs that I can't find rebuild kits for and I'm wondering where I could get the parts
Grate video ..awsome do u take other build?
I do often.
@@EMFAudio I have a L7 15 solo Baric. It totally froze up.... plz shoot link on where to send and ty for you time and reply.
Old school Boston Acoustic g5. Gets no love...
What cone can I use for a cvr 15”
The frame is sealed and the vents in the former are below the spider, how will they cool the coil???
The former vents aren't to cool the coil, it's to vent pressure under the dustcap.
@@EMFAudio Didnt think of that 😁👌
That 7000 is cool but its got nothing on the Blue Thunders. Lol. Too bad CC got closed down. Thats where I got my beak wet in car audio.
Cool video as usual. Can you say what is the best way to store black ca glue? Mine always gets hard.thank you.
COMPLETELY sealed, in a refrigerator. If you don't seal it, the refrigerator will suck the moisture out of it and turn it rock hard.
Looks like a v1 S.a. 12
