UN votes in favor of Palestinian membership: What does it signify? | DW News

- Опубліковано 9 тра 2024
- Today, the United Nations General Assembly voted overwhelmingly in favor of a Palestinian bid to become a full member, recommending the Security Council reconsider the matter. The motion, which grants the Palestinians significantly more rights to participate in General Assembly sessions, but not regular voting rights, was supported by 143 countries. The US vetoed a Security Council resolution last month that would have paved the way for that. Ahead of today's vote, Israel's ambassador to the world body shredded the UN charter, saying that was what countries who support Palestine's bid to join the UN were doing.

Guess who’s representing the Palestinian people genius
@@ricobacalla1891 To be clear you don't remember correctly. Only the Palestinians of Gaza, NOT the West Bank voted for HAMAS in 2006. The population in Gaza then was ~1.6 million and HAMAS only won 46% of the total vote but that constituted 74 out of 132 total seats (56%) hence they won the election. Only those 18 yrs old or over were able to vote. So not a single person who is now 35 or younger in Gaza today voted at all. So lets do some math. Lets assume 60% (40% were under 18) of Gaza's 2006 1.6 million population was of an age to vote. So 60% x 1,600,000 = 960,000. 46% x 960,000 = 441,600. So it would seem approximately 10% of the total number of Palestinians alive today in both the West Bank & Gaza voted for HAMAS. How many of that ~440000 are now dead due to Israels murderous campaigns and due to normal population attrition such as old age etc... You can see clearly less than 10% of Palestinians living today in the both the West Bank and Gaza actually voted for HAMAS. Hope this helps your memory in the future.

UN should vote to accept Taiwan as sovereign country.
Agreed.
Taiwan needs to go forward to the UN counsel with the proposal that they don't want what happened to the Palestinian to happen to them from China. It is a threat not just to Taiwan but to the world and global peace.
Currently, both the PRC (central government of mainland China) and ROC (regional government of Taiwan & Fukien/Fujian (partly)) both recognise the Greater China as their territories in their constitutions, plus the (Chinese) Civil War between them has never been agreed to an end, Taiwan cannot gain independence by any means unless the regional representatives are changing the constitution (which in fact does not seem to happen yet)
And on the other hand, as according to the One China principle (by the mainland government, and formerly by the regional representatives as well), countries can only choose to maintain a diplomatic relationship between either one of the two, otherwise the mainland government would just terminate any diplomatic, economic or any other kinds of relationship (see the Lithuania case for reference)
So, the point I want to express is that, Taiwan is in fact not an independent entity and not recognised as so by most of the countries around the globe, even the so-called “support” from the US is just something on paper and not by actions (i.e. they are not formally recognising Taiwan)
Hence, it’s extremely unlikely for what you are describing to happen in the UN in anytime in the foreseeable future
