@@RJRonquillo I'm not even kidding Bro, I'm not a novice, been playing decades and in the You Tube revolution I watch many many great players, Pete Thorn, Tim Pierce etc for new tips to improve my playing and this is by far the best and easiest to follow method I've ever seen anyone teach. Nobody needs any more than this. If they follow your instruction in this video there is literally very little else anyone needs to be able to develop killer soloing and over any chord changes. This not only gave me instruction on what’s next and answered my questions I’ve been thinking about for years but gave examples of how to pass these hurdles, and RJ made it easy to understand and think about so that I can practice this and continue moving forward!

I’m working at it . New but watching you all day . Getting the cob webs off my fingers and brain . I like you , always had a deep admiration and respect for Hendrix before I move on to the next world . ( hopefully not soon ) I’m 65 in January and this is on my bucket list . This lesson literally encompasses almost all of my playing techniques. If he does just a few (sloppy) taps at the end, I may have an existential crisis. Literally all my improv playing over or along with tracks is basically this. Rip some min. pentatonics, followed by some arpeggio picking over the appropriate chordshape. I'll never be a smooth sweep-picker or anything, but its a good idea to learn these techniques to build up different 'comfort zones' all over the neck and learn how to incorporate them with the chord changes of the rhythm section. One of the best feelings as a player with aspirations to shred is when you first realize you can improv jam along with a Jimi/SRV tune and just by your knowledge of the song's progression, you can play harmonious lead lines seemingly effortlessly from muscle memory and the innate knowledge base you've built up in your head over time, learning the instrument and his style. Feels good man.
I don't know if this is the best guitar instructional video on UA-cam ... but it is definitely in the Top 10 ... should be required viewing for any student of guitar ... doing a few of these each year would be priceless and invaluable ... well done!

I concur with Smoking Gun (and I'll assume others), and I rarely post any comments on YT. I've been trying to take more measured steps to really focus on playing the right scales and modes over the correct chords, and this lesson really gave me a great framework to tackle several chords in one song, that obviously reoccur all over blues and rock. Great tutorial that not only helps you navigate this song, but many others. Sean Daniel said learning Little Wing is what opened his eyes to how the notes are all interconnected on the fretboard. That's how I stumbled upon this video as I pursue Little Wing. I really like your Three Approaches concept. Sure we could try to learn it note for note, but maybe it's better to learn the feel or essence of the song first. After all, Jimi probably played this song differently every time he performed but he always made it memorable. Thanks again!

I 100% agree Andrew! I'm just starting to get into soloing with minor penta and major scales together or practicing minor penta over chord changes and this video is excellent. It feels great to be able to understand what Ron is saying, even if I can't quite play the level 3 and 4 stuff yet, I can grasp the concepts and its really fun trying not to make your 1st position penta sound like a scale, lol. It's so hard right now, but its getting better! Also, he's right...playing over little wing progression is so damn fun.

That was a great lesson RJ. What I found interesting was that Level 1 could sound as good as Level 4. I am overwhelmed with Level 4 now and it was kind of a relief to realize that. Love that shirt by the way!
Fantastic lesson! I’d say the best sounding was level 1 though :) it’s incredibly hard not to sound cheesy playing nothing but triads / arpeggios over chord changes, especially in non-jazz context. I find the most satisfying approach (to my ear) is stick to a scale (either modal or pentatonic or both) in the key, then use very small bits of a triad (or even just a single not e or double stop from the triad) to emphasize a chord here and there, especially if that chord is outside the key (like F). But even when the Em first goes to G, because G is so harmonically similar to Em, it sounds awesome when you briefly take a break from Em pentatonic and hit the 1st and the 3rd from the G maj triad.
Great lesson and great playing. Level 5: Play G minor pent. over G maj and F maj Level 6: Play 3rds and 7ths of every chord Level 7: Play 9ths of every chord

Thanks for the sub! To practice the one position, pick a position and go through all the pentatonic scales of the song, in that position (Em, Am, Bm, Dm) . An easy starting place would be 12th fret position.

It was about four concepts of phrasing over the Little Wing chord changes and being conscious of the techniques used of phrasing over the changes. If you have an issue with it not being close or up to some standard in your mind reply or comment to RJ not me I didn't play or record the video.
Awesome lesson, man. I've been learning my arpeggios and triads, but I've been struggling with actually applying them musically. This is going to change everything. You're THE MAN. I feel like I should send you a check or something.
How I learned to play the blues. I thought Blues scales were how you did it. So I tried to play Blues scales and it didn't work least not for me. Then I listen to the tempo and timing. And I said ah, that sounds a little better. Then I did some pausing and extreme bending and I applied that to regular pentatonic scales. Then I realized it's all in the timing and the great ones like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, Gary Moore, Ritchie Blackmore are all great Blues players in reality. It's all in the timing. To be a better blues player more extreme bending is essential. But not in all cases. If you just play Blues scales without any technique it wouldn't sound very good. Yngwie has a song called blue that doesn't have any blues scales and sounds amazing that's at a much faster tempo
I usually approach this with the "level 3/4" stuff, but I never even thought of using just the g major scale, and I really liked how that sounds! Thanks man, you breathed new life into this :)

This lesson literally encompasses almost all of my playing techniques. If he does just a few (sloppy) taps at the end, I may have an existential crisis. Literally all my improv playing over or along with tracks is basically this. Rip some min. pentatonics, followed by some arpeggio picking over the appropriate chordshape. I'll never be a smooth sweep-picker or anything, but its a good idea to learn these techniques to build up different 'comfort zones' all over the neck and learn how to incorporate them with the chord changes of the rhythm section.
One of the best feelings as a player with aspirations to shred is when you first realize you can improv jam along with a Jimi/SRV tune and just by your knowledge of the song's progression, you can play harmonious lead lines seemingly effortlessly from muscle memory and the innate knowledge base you've built up in your head over time, learning the instrument and his style. Feels good man.
I don't know if this is the best guitar instructional video on UA-cam ... but it is definitely in the Top 10 ... should be required viewing for any student of guitar ... doing a few of these each year would be priceless and invaluable ... well done!

Absolute gold standard for a lesson man! I've taken in person lessons and bought online courses that haven't had half the applicable knowledge you managed to fit into a 20 minute video. Love the way you highlight both the chord being played in the progression and the scale used to solo over it.

I concur with Smoking Gun (and I'll assume others), and I rarely post any comments on YT. I've been trying to take more measured steps to really focus on playing the right scales and modes over the correct chords, and this lesson really gave me a great framework to tackle several chords in one song, that obviously reoccur all over blues and rock. This particular lesson was a higher level of quality than many of the ones on YT by other players. And by "higher quality" I do mean an overall improved feeling experience. It was clearly not an absolute beginner's lesson, yet it was obtainable by most of us who are still learning to actually apply some of the basics (and then some). Great lesson. Great pace. This is a video I can keep coming back to as my skills progress. I really like that you overlay the chord and scale in the upper left hand corner. Good "training wheels" to have as I explore what works over the chord. Great song choice as well since it includes the first six chords of the G major scale, a passing chord and an non-scale chord to boot. PS Bonus points for the matching guitar and strap. Great tutorial that not only helps you navigate this song, but many others. Sean Daniel said learning Little Wing is what opened his eyes to how the notes are all interconnected on the fretboard. That's how I stumbled upon this video as I pursue Little Wing. I really like your Three Approaches concept. Sure we could try to learn it note for note, but maybe it's better to learn the feel or essence of the song first. After all, Jimi probably played this song differently every time he performed but he always made it memorable. Thanks again!

I 100% agree Andrew! I'm just starting to get into soloing with minor penta and major scales together or practicing minor penta over chord changes and this video is excellent. It feels great to be able to understand what Ron is saying, even if I can't quite play the level 3 and 4 stuff yet, I can grasp the concepts and its really fun trying not to make your 1st position penta sound like a scale, lol. It's so hard right now, but its getting better! Also, he's right...playing over little wing progression is so damn fun.

Fantastic lesson! I’d say the best sounding was level 1 though :) it’s incredibly hard not to sound cheesy playing nothing but triads / arpeggios over chord changes, especially in non-jazz context. I find the most satisfying approach (to my ear) is stick to a scale (either modal or pentatonic or both) in the key, then use very small bits of a triad (or even just a single not e or double stop from the triad) to emphasize a chord here and there, especially if that chord is outside the key (like F). But even when the Em first goes to G, because G is so harmonically similar to Em, it sounds awesome when you briefly take a break from Em pentatonic and hit the 1st and the 3rd from the G maj triad.

That one time UA-cam recommends was spot on! New sub! Really informative lesson to help me soloing in general. These 4 steps way of teaching is awesome, gives me a natural progression in practicing :) How can I practice level 3.2 of staying in the same position for all chords?
Thanks for the sub! To practice the one position, pick a position and go through all the pentatonic scales of the song, in that position (Em, Am, Bm, Dm) . An easy starting place would be 12th fret position.

It was about four concepts of phrasing over the Little Wing chord changes and being conscious of the techniques used of phrasing over the changes. If you have an issue with it not being close or up to some standard in your mind reply or comment to RJ not me I didn't play or record the video.

How I learned to play the blues. I thought Blues scales were how you did it. So I tried to play Blues scales and it didn't work least not for me. Then I listen to the tempo and timing. And I said ah, that sounds a little better. Then I did some pausing and extreme bending and I applied that to regular pentatonic scales. Then I realized it's all in the timing and the great ones like Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Joe Satriani, Gary Moore, Ritchie Blackmore are all great Blues players in reality. It's all in the timing. To be a better blues player more extreme bending is essential. But not in all cases. If you just play Blues scales without any technique it wouldn't sound very good. Yngwie has a song called blue that doesn't have any blues scales and sounds amazing that's at a much faster tempo
I usually approach this with the "level 3/4" stuff, but I never even thought of using just the g major scale, and I really liked how that sounds! Thanks man, you breathed new life into this :)
