- I went to NAMM 2023 and decided that I wanted to find every single surf guitar I could and put them in one video. A few slipped through the cracks but im pretty certain I got most of them.
BTW this was filmed and recorded with DJI products I got from Sweetwater

So far the most entertaining and compelling video of NAMM 2023 I've seen 👍
134 surf guitars...
best NAMM video confirmed
Also loved these non-surf moments:
6:45 surfing ...with the alien?
16:20 Ernie Ball~🎵Grab life by the ballz~~🎶
Looked like a surf guitar convention to be honest. Way more surfy guitars than I would have suspected.
Ryan returns to his roots and seeks out the irascible Surf guitar. 🤙
"Surf", itself is an idea and sound that is locked in time and brings some of us right back there, to when we heard it first. We also love all the modern, grunge, punk and metal takes on the genre.
When I think of surf guitar, I always think of the Ventures' by Mosrite or the Fender Jazzmaster's that seemed to be the favorites of Surf movie producers.
I think your 3 rules of what constitutes a Surf guitar are as valid as anything I have ever heard. Single coil, Trem/Wiggle stick and of course a surfy vibe in shape or build. (some might say "Rad")
At the heart of it, Surf is and has always been a state of mind. A way cool and young person's music to hang out with or driven by a crazy beat. And of course the great surf ballads that are inspired by the sounds of the waves rolling onto the beach.
Take me back, Daddio! 🌊🎸
Correct me if i am mistaken, but after the failure of the Jazzmaster (back in the 60s) Leo Fender attempted to "relaunch" the Jazzmaster with the shorter scale aim specifically at the young surfers and named it the Jaguar. There is a nice video on 5 watt channel on the history of the Jaguar (and all other electric guitars really).
my favorite video from NAMM this year so far, great job showing all the guitar booths
10:05 There ya go. Nice! I want one.
What are those guitars at the Lace booth?
Like my quest for a rockabilly guitars, keep it nice and general. Anything can surf...maybe
Surfing with the alien guitar 😂
Thank you for showing us every surf guitar at NAMM 2023
#I_counted 436 surf guitars.........maybe. I want to see you play AS MANY as you can get your hands on. Hopefully hopefully many of those creator and dealers can come thru with some.
That Rapier with three pickups, two three way blade switches and a Jazzmaster style vibrato looks awesome. Can't find it anywhere online.
I’ve only head about the NAMM show… looks like guitar nerd heaven 😍 thanks for the the preview.. now on the bucket list
Surfgitar, surfgitar, surfgitar😂. Love your channel, Ryan!
"You didn't ask for that, you didn't want to know" - Ryan, to an audience subscribed to and fully here for his surf shenanigans.
really enjoyed seeing all those guitars! awesome! good tour.
I saw many of these while I was there. I live in Santa Cruz so we love Surf Guitars! Yay!
The surf vibe comes from the player. 🏄♂️🧘♂️
Nice video!
That sword has a very surfy name, like that dude named Ray who you can find hanging out at the Pier. RAY-pier.
At least one maybe two!! Love you both and have a blessed day!!
I play in a Bay Area surf band -- the Reverbivores -- and I've been rocking an SG for the last three years...and just started playing a Firebird.
Cool feature.👍👍👍👍
Omg Donner has a booth/spot...lol
I have one of this red Tagima (model TW-61) that was shown, but in white color with this same shield. Beautiful guitar for the price with double pickup in P90 and double pivot bridge, good for tremolo without detuning. It's a great guitar for surf rock, just like the Jazzmaster and Jaguar of the 50s, but with an affordable price.
you are providing humanity a great service !... Thx !!
9:56 I can't believe IYV has jumped on the Acoustasonic jazzmaster shape!!! I am sure their biggest seller is the white mustang with the JM vibrato
that ormsby V with the ankh is freaking badass
Missed Guild Surfliner guitars ;-)
I need that black REVO with the 4 pickups ASAP!
2 out of 3? Nah, lack of any kind of vibrato system is an instant veto! But still a fun video! Well done.
So are humbuckers, even if they can be split or tapped. No way does my PRS come close to my Strat and Jag, when it comes to producing a surf sound, even with the coils split. Should have been 3 out of 3.
I own a few Vintage brand and Fret King (both are JHS, UK brands) guitars. They're all very good quality instruments that sound great.
I was excited for the Magneto Starlux. Surfy vibes for sure. Give that axe a look! Love the video!
10 out of 10 content. Confirmed!
When admission is free there are very few tours not worth taking, thanks Ryan!
Best NAMM Vlogg so far!
has to come in sea foam green
I cant call it a surf guitar untill i here it with a proper spring reverb tank in front of the amp!
No doubt there's some folks who came out like, :What's with that surf guitar guy?1. Awesome video. Hilarious with spirits.
Great video Ryan... Anyone count them?
THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS FOREVER!!
I think filtertrons are in my opinion almost more surf than the single coils although they both surf with a little spring
You are right , I have an gretsch astrojet with supertron and it is definitely surf capable
My hollowbody grestch with bigsby does surf well if you like your surf a bit raunchy and primal, cuz if you’re cranking your amp the hollows get unruly. But I kinda dig it, surfy rock n roll
@@napwneoenejeod3740 you don’t need sustain when you have feedback
The Rapiers are clones (legally not reissues!) of the original 1960's UK built Watkins-Wilson (Guitar annex of WEM amplifiers) line of axes, they definitely surf!
Quite a few Teisco knock-offs!!
Was really impressed with the Vintage collection. While there's more choice than ever in budget guitars finding things that are in any way unique is hard(same with the Affordboards honestly).
I have a Tagima.
Great guitars.
Carl Wilson played a 12 string Rickenbacker. Mike’s son plays a black six string in The Beach Boys touring band. Just saying.
Aw dang! Them Karrer guitars look rad!!! Please please please do a video ditty on them!
Especially the Harp guitar thingummy!
What trem set up should I use to do shoegaze glide guitar? I have a squire jazzmaster and I want to up grade the term and bridge.
is there something about the current trem and bridge you aren't happy with? what specific model is it? classic vibe? j mascis?
@60CycleHumCast I have the 40th anniversary edition. It all works and does what it says on the tin. It just doesn't detune while strumming and pushing in as smoothly as I'd like. It's also very noisy, and I tend to scrape my hands along the strings. I've heard one brand allows you to adjust the height of the arm. This isn't something I'm replacing (the trim or bridge) right now (I'm still building out my pedal boards and death by audio pedals arent cheap). I started to do some research and was a bit lost as to what I should be looking for. I live in Texas (not in Austin), and shoegaze adjacent music isn't a thing most people here know about.
noisy like creaky? or is the arm knocking around? i haven't tried that exact model but it looks cool. you can adjust the height of the arm and tension on that trem, the screw just to the left of where the arm inserts adjusts the tension of the spring, increasing the tension will cause the arm to rise away from the body. You can also put the trem arm in a clamp or vice and gently bend it outwards to get more range. I do that with all my strat arms. It might be hard to find a gold replacement to match the rest of the guitar but I can say that Ive tried 4 different premium variations and they are all good. I bought a used AVRI trem for my Jaguar, its classic looking and way better than the stock trem or any trem ive found on squiers. Just smoother feeling all around. I also have a mastery and descendant trem. The mastery is smooth and well made but pretty standard in design. the descendent allows adjustment of the strings deeper into the body for increased break angle (which can help negate string buzzing on the bridge). And I have the newer panorama trem design from the fender ampro II. the panorama feels great and has extended range but if you like heavier strings it needs a heavier aftermarket spring to keep up. Honestly I suggest spending some time learning how to dial in what you have before spending big bucks on replacements, once you figure out the workings of the trem then start shopping.
@@60CycleHumcast thanks for the info I will definitely try all that before swapping out the everything.
Tagima! Brazil represent!
What were the guitars at 5:57? I couldn't get a good look at the brand name but I love them.
Looks like the head stock says 'Trailbreaker"
@@charlie-obrien You are 100% right. After a quick Google search I found the Trailbreaker Mark II made by Oopegg guitars. Beautiful guitars, massive price tag ($3k+).
@@livingthattwelvelife2209
Lol, 3 grand?
Maybe it was better left a mystery.
Nice looking guitar though.
@@charlie-obrien Starting at 3 grand lol
That Ormsby was pretty impressive
Rapier is pronounced more like the R word that would probably get me in trouble writing it.
07:28 I love my Rickenbackers but I don't even know why they bother to go to NAMM. They have backorders for years and even if they do come up with some new weird guitars (like those 330 style bass monstrosities they made last year) they never bring them.
The person most likely to go to their stand is someone who already owns at least one of the models they have on display, I can't see why dealers woud be interested in going and seeing the same 300, 600 and 4000 models in the same colours again.
Brits killed it with the surf guitars!
Is this a sequel to the guitar pedals that are "built like a tank" video?
Also: which piece of video recording kit inexplicably gives a mirror image whenever you set it to film selfies...? this is definitely NEED TO KNOW stuff! * cough *
Did Guild not have a NAMM booth? They put out the Surfliner Deluxe which, you would think, would meet the definition of a surf guitar. Various web pages have the reveal as a NAMM story, but I don't know if they really had a booth.
They did have a booth but it was in a weird spot away from other guitar stuff so I didn’t find it in this video. I’ll actually be filming a surfliner unboxing today though so stay tuned for that.
@@60CycleHumcast I can't wait! If they have decent tuning stability they are catapulting to the top of my "next guitar" list.
I’m surprised nobody didn’t try and offer you any reverb 😊
No Fender surf guitar booth?
are they sand blasted? are they surf colored?
Does a coil-split SG with Vibrola count? 😁
Wow. There is no one there.
31:10 RAY - PEE -AIR!
Not Entwistle’s design but still very British 😉
Watkins was a much loved marque in these shores…👍
I would watch him try to find surf amps too lol
Seems like many of the guitar booths at NAMM would be empty if no one but Fender could build Fender shapes!
Those shapes sell. That’s the reality of it.
@@60CycleHumcast Yes, I realize that, but it's still kind of sad/boring. Beyond that, I was surprised at the number of Red Special style guitars. I wonder how many people actually buy them? Must be enough.
I need to look to see if Guild is represented at NAMM this year. Their electrics can leave some to be desired I am reluctant to say but I've been a guild fan for some time. Surfliner ...had to jump on one when they released it. It's orange. It has Twenty Three frets. It is called an Surfliner. I think Guild has sold again. But it now has a wiggle stick. A surf guitar also needs to be durable (beach party's can get out of hand). I intend to tweak this around a bit. I do need to mention about the particular guitar I purchased the neck shape invited good riffing.Guild "made to be played" it does seem to be so.And did I mention it's orange ...kinda Kool.
Guild was there but they weren’t by the other guitars so they didn’t make it into the video - steve
L O V E those LACE surfies!!
Was Hallmark Guitars there?
Did Guild not have the new Surfliner Deluxe on display? I'm really curious about their new vibrato.
they did but their booth was in a weird spot so I didn'
t find it while filming this. But stay tuned because they sent me one and ill be publishing a video this week.
@@60CycleHumcast awesome. looking forward to your thoughts on it.
Does Danelectro not do NAMM? I have a surf guitar Dano.
Surfy-NAMM!
A surf guitar is non symmetrical.
A surf guitar has a sparkle finish.
A surf guitar has a whammy bar.
A surf guitar has single coils.
Surf bands use a bass player?? If I want my practice bass (short PJ) to sound surfy I just turn up the jazz bridge pickup, so I think a surf bass can be Jazz or PJ arrangement. I also play an Ibanez Mikro 5 EADGC with the Lace Alumitone Jazz pickups, that one can sound pretty darn surfy,..but no wiggles so far...
🧡
It is a NOBLE MISSION😁 I don’t know what it is either but your qualified to decide….if anyone is!
hey ryan you have to checkout the eastwood fyrbyrd "sharkbite" guitar the coolest surf guitar ever based on a maton electric from the 60"s
My bullet mustang has no wiggle stick and has humbuckers 😔
I think the best name for it is a 'Talent Arm'
Actually I really wanted to know
You missed a crucial point of surfness!
It must _twang_ !
Ric's twang and so do (real) gold foils. So if you can do spaghetti Western...you can _surf_ it.
I love surf guitars... .but not surf guitar.... does that make sense?
yes
"OH YUCK, BASSES! I'm getting outta' here!"
Fixed bridge? Non-surf.
It's like wearing wing-tips to the beach. You can do play-by-play at a surf event. But stay out of the water.
Where were the Jaguars and Jazz Masters? Those are the real surf guitars!
If you can guess how many times Ryan says "surf guitar" you win an imaginary cookie
Jail in Canada?
Haha!!
Poutine , french fries and gravy!!!!
For a moment we lived in a world where there are only Lefty guitars, Surf or not.
Is there a reason the image is mirrored in the first few minutes?
Selfie cam at the start
I would argue the a Floyd Rose makes it NOT a surf guitar. But that’s just me.
No Surfcasters?
Looks really quiet!
But the question remains, did you find the ultimate Surftar?
Missed opportunity for silver surfer
I cant decide if Ryan is like 5’10” or 6’7”
I’m 5’15”
@@60CycleHumcast I’m 4’26” myself
A Surf Guitar is 3 single coils - NOT two single coils and a humbucker!😎🤟
So jaguars and Jazzmasters aren’t surf guitars?
@@60CycleHumcast He's right about the HSS, though. The bridge really needs to be a single coil, otherwise your amp needs to do some seriously heavy lifting to compensate.
... I frequently say rapier. But I do historical fencing so that's my excuse.
There's a lot more sword fighters in the audience than i anticipated.
@@60CycleHumcast hey man find a local SCA or HEMA group and get to stabbin!
Floyd rose guitars are indeed surf guitars 😅
That first guitar is a Church Guitar, man.
any guitar can be a surf guitar with enough reverb (and a whammy bar)
How many of the instruments at NAMN are made in China?
A lot
🐢🐢🐢👍
