It's gonna sound weird, but; when I play with smaller gem size it's like the effect of playing windowed mode and it makes the gems feel closer together and makes the frets feel closer together. I hate hyperspeed though.
It's interesting how opinions differ on this, when I moved onto CH (default settings), I was like something is off. Then I saw the note speed setting and haven't looked back ever since. Now I get sick when I try to set it under 10. I play on 12 all the time. Smaller note size on the other hand did not really feel better to me. Maybe I just need to get used to it.
My Girlfriend told me that size doesn't matter, and it comes down to the technique

1:20 it creates space horizontally and vertically, hyperspeed only creates vertical separation but it also shortens the highway/same effectiveness.
Yeah decreasing the note size has helped me LOTS with reading charts. Especially ones with open notes

I play on 110, and it actually is quite nice. I wouldn't go any bigger though.
