Commando is one of the finest pieces of 80’s cinema. The music, the one-liners, the action, the entertainment factor, it’s silly dumb fun. Def. a B movie with great production. So for me it’s an A.
I'd argue that Predator was the finest action film of the era, and sadly modern action movies have only gone on to prove that it might still be the best one.
Exactly! Not realistic but I had such a blast watching it that I just didn't care! Arnold's physique and personality made this type of action movie work on a level of pure entertainment.
What is intriguing about Commando is that it somehow manages to be your typical dumb, over the top, clichéd 80s action movie but at the same time also comes across as completely self-aware and almost a parody of itself. Like you said, straight. Usually a movie is either one or the other. I freaking love this movie.
Very true. It's completely self aware of its own OTT daftness with a knowing level of camp. I mean, God bless Vernon Wells as Bennett. It's a deliciously camp-yet-Macho pantomime of an action flick. And I love it.
the role of Bennet was recast very early into production and Wells got the new casting, he insisted they keep the costume the same(it was originally fitted for the much smaller other actor) cos he thoght it was funny.
Because he was also Wez in Road Warrior (and Weird Science), I'm sure in many peoples' headcanon, Bennet was pre-wasteland Wez. Bill Paxton and Vernon Wells in Commando and Weird Science in the same year.
At the time Terminator wasn’t Arnold only success. Conan The Barbarian was a big hit. One of the best OST of all time, and a lot smarter movie that what people think it is. It’s the kind of movie that get better when you get older ( like Robocop 1 or First Blood) because you don’t have the tools to understand those movie properly when you are a kid.
As a recent Conan convert, all I can say is So Much Yes! I had fun thinking about the meaning of all the symbolism: snakes, black sun and moon, the 8-armed rudder mirroring the wheel of pain (reincarnation and samsara?), Stygian black lotus (i.e. from the river Styx?), the tree of woe, the riddle of steel. And of course the themes of purposelessness, health vs. unhealthy sexual desires, loneliness, abandonment, loyalty, temptation, pleasure and material comfort versus heroism, and plain old valuing the people you love above everything else. The dialog is very much about characters talking about their decisions in somewhat more general (and thus abstract) terms than what's normal, which makes it easier to see what the same decision principles would mean in your own life, which makes this sword-and-sorcery action-fest more thought-provoking than it has any business being. "Shall we not grab life by the throat, and make it give us what we desire?" // "There comes a time when jewels lose their shine, when gold loses its luster, when even a throne room becomes a prison, and all that's left is a father's love for his child" // "success can test a man's mettle as surely as a powerful adversary". I also watched Conan the Barbarian with Dad shortly before I moved to college. Only got away with it (Mom would *not* have approved) was because Mom and my siblings were out of the house for the afternoon.
You can always tell someone's age range when they say "this feels like one of those Rick & Morty..." or "it's the Batman suit-up scene" etc instead of "oh, so this is where got it from". It's always backwards. ;)
With the exception of dudes like Arnold and Sly, people were less gym rats back in the day. You would watch villains in movies who were not necesseraly jacked, just tall. But muscles doesn't ecuate to strenght, there are tough guys who are generally badass. That is why I could buy this guy fighting Arnold if he's mean and crazy enough. Look at someone like Dan Severn.
I recommend Big Trouble In Little China! You already watched The Thing, now watch this, and Escape From New York, and you will have the Kurt Russell/John Carpenter classic trifecta!
No reaction to young Alyssa Milano? Also, is it strange that we still see Tommy Chong around but I haven't seen Rae Dawn Chong in many years? Also, "blow off a little steam guy" was played by Vernon Wells who was "crazy red mohawk guy (Wez)" in The Road Warrior.
@@victorsixtythree $2 bucks unlocks almost anything that's a month old. So its full one of this, Hard Target, LA Confidential, SuperCop, Point Break, Bloodsport and a bunch more.
Rae Dawn Chong got Chris Pratt into acting and Hollywood. She ran into him in Hawaii at a restaurant he was a waiter at, and she asked him had he ever done acting before. She made some calls and that is how he got his foot in the door. She mainly does production work and other behind the camera stuff.
Actually it was Tim Burton's Batman in 1989 that pretty much ended this genre of action movie. When they cast Micheal Keaton as Batman and it was a huge success it showed Hollywood that you didn't have to be a testosterone dripping pumped up alpha male to be an action movie star. After Batman you started to see the rise of the "Average Guy" action movie hero and movies like this were never really made again.
Wouldn't you say that Lethal Weapon and Die Hard contributed to that as well? None of the heroes on those flicks were 'roided out muscle men and those 2 flicks came out before Batman.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was offered a sequel to Commando, but turned it down. Then that script was re-written to accommodate the new actor Bruce Willis with a character change from John Matrix former soldier to John Maclane a New York cop and became Die Hard (1988).
Unfortunately that is a myth (yes I believed it too back in the day). The fact is that Die Hard begun as the sequel to the 1968 film "The Detective" with Frank Sinatra and is based on the novel "Nothing Last Forever" which is the novel sequel to "The Detective". The problem with movies like this is that everyone shoots from the hip and no one knows how to extract collapsible stocks (or unfold folding stocks). That tendency infected video games in the '90s, but it started in movies even before the '80s. And it's still infecting movies, TV shows, and video games to this day. 2:17 That's not a Bazooka. It's an M202 FLASH. 13:07 It's actually impossible to mistake front from back with one of those. 13:22 That would have killed everyone in that police truck and melted it to the point that its moving parts fused together. The M202 FLASH uses 66mm pyrophoric warheads. 13:46 Four-tube rocket launcher, not "four turret Bazooka." 14:59 Why do movie people think hand grenades are meant to be worn that way? That's a hazard, yo! Hand grenades should be stashed in pouches. 15:06 Valmet M78/83 (also seen in Predator). But why does he flip it upside-down to insert a mag? That's pointless. 15:28 Notice how those hand grenades flop around on that vest rig. 17:14 ua-cam.com/video/XdJM-y50IHA/v-deo.html 18:02 You do realize that's Vernon Wells, right? You know, Wez from 'The Road Warrior'? Also Mr. Igo from Innerspace. And he basically played Wez in Weird Science. 18:54 He should have had that Uzi cocked already. It fires from the open bolt, so it technically didn't need to be cocked. It was only done for dramatic effect. 18:58 What was the point of that chainmail vest if it couldn't even protect him from a blunt pipe?
Arnold had already done Conan the Barbarian and Conan the Destroyer, which is what really helped his career and get him noticed. He got the role for Terminator and then Commando due to Conan. That was his launching off point. Predator was his next big film after Commando. There was the film "Raw Deal" between Commando and Predator, but its not well known and wasn't as successful.

Bennett is fantastic, this film is a gem. back in the 80's afer this came out I remember I used to play a Commando video game on my ZX Spectrum 2 constantly with my little brother.
Worth noting that despite how he looks, Vernon Wells who played Bennett was a legit hard man! The final fight he had to do with abroken arm and no cast.
My dad was a first or 2nd assistant director on this movie. I always loved hearing his stories about filming this movie. If you don’t believe me just look at the credits and you’ll see my last name
One story he told me was the bad guy in this was supposed to be this super buff Australian dude and the head shots and everything made them believe the guy was in shape but as you can see by the film he showed up and was basically some random chubby dude lol everyone was pissed but it was too late to recast
The single most unrealistic military action movie ever made in film history. But I still freaking love it. Fun fact: the actor who was originally supposed to play Bennet was a slightly skinnier guy and when they hired this guy they didn’t have time to refit the weird Freddy Mercury looking shirt, which is why it looks the way it does. Also Rae Dawn Chong is now married to Jason Mamoa, and when he was a kid she was his Hollywood crush. Once when he was asked who his Hollywood crush was he said “I married her.”
This was my favorite movie when I was like 4. My parents like to reminisce that for the scene when he's suiting up I would shout "He's turning into a robot!" Looking back, don't know if it was a good or bad idea for me to be allowed to watch it at 4 =)

- Dredd (2012) - (The Raid meets Training Day, in the future, with Karl Urban and Lena Hedley,... and Domhnall Gleeson actually)
- The Man Who Would Be King (1975) - (Manly British war buddies and IRL friends, Caine and Connery set out to rob an isolated Asian country blind.Christopher Plummer is in this.)
- Upgrade (2018) - (Absolutely badass low-budget cyberpunk revenge movie starring Not-Tom-Hardy)
- Army of Darkness (1992) - (Bruce Campbell at his best, absolutely chock-a-block with one-liners and cheesy action)
- The Boondock Saints (1999) - (Worth it for Willem Defoe's performance alone, I know people are split on this one)
- The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly (1966) - (I don't know if you guys have done this yet, but it's one of the most essential 'manly' movies I can think of)
- "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" (2005) and "The Nice Guys" (2016) - (Shane Black always brings the manly shit-talk)
- Turbo Kid (2015) - (equal parts heartfelt 80s throwback kid's movie and hyper-violent low-budget post-apocalyptic gore-fest. Utterly unique. Might not fit the 'Manly' format)
- Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) - (The greatest buddy western of all-time, everything still works like gangbusters and it feels like a modern film)
- "Rumble in the Bronx"(1995) and "The Legend of Drunken Master"(1994) - (Apex Jackie Chan before he started to get too old, his stunts and action toned down and Hollywoodized)
- Big Trouble in Little China (1986) - (You guys talked about peak "Kurt Russell" in your "The Thing" viewing, this is right up there.)
Thomas Cunningham atleast half of those are already on the list!
@@SeanTanktop good to know.
Consider the other half. Lol
@@SeanTanktop Also, check this out: clarkesworldmagazine.com/watts_01_10/
And... the vimeo link for PREDATOR on your patreon isn't working :(
Thomas Cunningham oh yeah, just had to nix it and making a new one later today!
@@SeanTanktop for a dark horse pick, watch the french movie "Doberman" with a younger Vincent Cassell
13:46 Four-tube rocket launcher, not "four turret Bazooka."
14:59 Why do movie people think hand grenades are meant to be worn that way? That's a hazard, yo! Hand grenades should be stashed in pouches.
15:06 Valmet M78/83 (also seen in Predator). But why does he flip it upside-down to insert a mag? That's pointless.
15:28 Notice how those hand grenades flop around on that vest rig.

18:02 You do realize that's Vernon Wells, right? You know, Wez from 'The Road Warrior'? Also Mr. Igo from Innerspace. And he basically played Wez in Weird Science.
18:54 He should have had that Uzi cocked already. It fires from the open bolt, so it technically didn't need to be cocked. It was only done for dramatic effect.
18:58 What was the point of that chainmail vest if it couldn't even protect him from a blunt pipe?
This one came out the year I was born - actually, a LOT of movies that are people's favorites today came out the year I was born.
The actor that plays Bennett is in Weird Science and Mad Max 2 if you guys have seen either of those.
Did they cut out the scene where he cuts off the guys arm from the TV version? Because I swear I don't remember that whole scene at all.
I remember being 5 years old and my cousin taking me to watch this movie at the theater. The 80s were great.
What is interesting is that this movie started the one liners after the kills trend.
This is classic Schwarzenegger 😁
A few more ideas for this category could be, The Road Warrior, The Magnificent Seven (Original or Remake with Denzel), and The Nice Guys.
Have any of you guys ever seen Snatch or Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels?
There's no way not to love this movie !!
Oh fuck me right. I’m an idiot. I guess the gun toting Marine/operative Era?
@@SeanTanktop I'm not sure what you're referring to here. I'm just simply talking about Arnold's career filmography. I'm not calling anyone anything. Sorry if this is seen as some sort of personal attack.
@@My-Name-Isnt-Important NO! I wasn't either. I was thinking he had moved on from the Sword and Sandal era and into the jacked One Man Army operative Era! Cheers bud and thanks for the correction!!! Also we gotta put Conan on the list.
Those soldiers on the island were the best. Let’s all bunch together and run directly at a Special Ops Commando and his direct line of fire. Good Plan !!!
The girl who plays his daugther? Alyssa Milano. Name of Starlord's ship? The Milano. Starlord is played by Chris Pratt, who married Katherine Schwarzenegger!
Bennett is fantastic, this film is a gem. back in the 80's afer this came out I remember I used to play a Commando video game on my ZX Spectrum 2 constantly with my little brother.
Total recall? Or did you already did it?
Not yet! But I think we have all seen it.
Worth noting that despite how he looks, Vernon Wells who played Bennett was a legit hard man! The final fight he had to do with abroken arm and no cast.
you want a manly movie?! feast your eyes on Extreme Prejudice starring Powers Booth and Nick Nolte.
tekatomon interesting. Gotta take a look at it!
Oh fuck that’s insane! I mean he’s a great character actor and muscle doesn’t mean your a good fighter, but just visually it doesn’t track!
Jason Momoa is married to Lisa Bonet, NOT Rae Dawn Chong.
Helvetica Scenario right.... my bad
24:00 the movie your thinking of is "Red Scorpion."
For some reason, this movie seemed substantially less ridiculous when I watched it as a kid.
A lot of Arnies movies are very quotable and Commando is no exception. The 80s at its best.
Great movie classic Arnold we need more like this.
Die hard was supposed to be the sequel to commando. It was originally John matrix visiting his daughter, then the story changed to John Mcclane
Another great episode keep up the good work.
Would you ever do "The 13th Warrior" or "Desperado" two good Antonio Banderas movies
13th Warrior would be a great one! i think we'[ve all seen Desperado before, but I'll check with the fellas
Bud I think Desperado would be great! Get some latin lovin in the moooovvvvviiiiieeeesss!!
Vernon Wells is also mohawk dude in the Roadwarrior.
This was my favorite movie when I was like 4. My parents like to reminisce that for the scene when he's suiting up I would shout "He's turning into a robot!" Looking back, don't know if it was a good or bad idea for me to be allowed to watch it at 4 =)
Every movie named in this classic clip from the very first episode of Cheers deserves consideration for Manly Movie Mondays: ua-cam.com/video/qByCREcAbhA/v-deo.html
HA! FUCKING CLASSIC Scene and yes! all of these should be in the MMM Rolodex
You guys really should watch the behind the scenes... It is hilarious and they definetly knew what they were making
