    "Raiders of the Lost Ark": Lucas had finished "Star Wars" and was on vacation with Spielberg. What to do next? Spielberg wanted to "Do 'James Bond," while Lucas remembered cliffhanger films of the 1930's. Their second choice leading man, Harrison Ford, got to create another iconic movie character. Karen Allen's "Marion Ravenwood," Indy's equal, could drink a Neanderthal under the table but still be all Woman. With enough stunts for THREE Action movies, "Raiders" hit the box office like a tidal wave. This movie persuaded a generation of college students to "dig in the dirt" as now-Cool Archeologists. Subs prefer to travel on the surface when they can because they are run by diesel engines and the engines consume air (oxygen). They do use the engines to charge batteries for running under water. (Nuclear subs work differently). A sub can run at "periscope" depth and use a snorkel to breath but there's still a problem of fighting more resistance to forward motion when submerged.

    The plane rolled over Harrison Ford's leg. Fortunately, it wasn't as heavy as it appears, and they put squishy rubber tires on it, so the damage to Ford's knee wasn't too bad. If memory serves me correctly, the shot with Indy filling the left side of the frame completely in profile came about because they used a VistaVision camera for that. That was a widescreen film format where the film strip runs horizontally, not vertically. ILM liked to use it for visual FX because a larger area of film is exposed, giving more detail, but since the cameras were just modified for the film transport, the optics being the same as 'normal' film cameras, the eyepiece/viewfinder only showed part of the full frame, so the camera operator had to guess what the rest of frame would look like, so the camera lend itself to such frames where one object filled the part you couldn't see (here, most of Indy's head), and the eyepiece used to make sure the other object (Belloq) was in focus properly.
    (VistaVision was never adopted widely. Hitchcock liked to use it a lot, then it slowly died, but then it was resurrected by ILM, as I said, for visual FX.)

    • @OfficialDNJmoviehouse

    To give this film a, " 4 " rating is unforgivable. The thing is, this film was MADE for the big screen. The cinematography, sound design, effects, direction, props, orchestral music composition, were created for a very BIG movie screen. If you two watched this in a huge old style movie theatre on 70 mm film in Dolby 12 track stereo as it was shown in many high end theaters then ( where I saw it multiple times in 1981 ) ...then you would be stunned and thrilled in an entirely different, bigger, engulfing way than just watching it as you did on likely a tiny computer screen.
    No good.
    It deserves a " 5 ".
    And note: The male reactor was taking ratings off by " nit picking " as he called it when feeling skeptical that Jones could have ridden the submarine to the island. Well, first of all the island was not that far away from where he swam to the sub and climbed on....only a few hours. Further, contrary to what the reactor guy stated, those subs at that time did indeed ride at sea level with the topside exposed. They only submerged when heading to battle or surveillance missions. Otherwise, they stayed up top. There is an outake scene where Ford has his whip wrapped around a pipe on top of the sub as it submerged only several feet under the surface. He held onto that whip and was dragged by the sub for some time up to his neck in ocean water. The scene was cut out of the film for time purposes. That part of the story was also explained in the novel. Just FYI.

    • @OfficialDNJmoviehouse
      @OfficialDNJmoviehouse  2 дні тому

      You make some good points, and I can understand why someone would give this a 5, especially if they watched this in theater at release. It really is a great movie.
      Also regarding the nitpick about the submarine, I can totally admit that I was wrong about this one. Others have also pointed out that this was before the era of nuclear submarines and they stayed surfaced most of the time. I'm actually glad that I am wrong because it explains that situation so easily for me.

    @hazeman4755 3 дні тому +3

    A great film and I can't imagine anyone else than Harrison Ford playing Indy. My favorite of the Indiana Jones movies is the third one, but this isn't far behind.
    I'm not an expert, but I think that before nuclear submarines, they couldn't stay submerged for very long times so would sail on the surface as much as possible. But it was still a very risky move to climb on the sub without knowing how far it was going and it could dive at any moment.
    I agree with you about the gun sound effects. In general I love the punching and shooting sounds of 80s movies. They are not very realistic, but they have a weight to them and feel dramatic.

    The stunt going under the truck was inspired by an old western stunt originally from the movie "Stagecoach" (1939). Guy goes through the horses and under a coach, come back up from behind. Stunt man Terry Leonard had tried to do the stunt for a western a year earlier, but it didn't work, so he suggested to repeat it here with the truck.
    For some shots with Indy trailing behind the truck it's actually Harrison Ford himself. He was asked before if he was worried about it, he answered: "No, if it were dangerous they would have filmed more of the movie before."

    If you review the film @18:10 to 18:13 you'll see a long pole near the rear wheels of the truck. That was a designed practical effect to help turn the truck on its side during the explosion. The pole was designed to eject from inside the truck and impact the ground causing it to overturn onto its side. I'm not certain but they may have forgotten to edit it out or didn't think it would be too visible during the explosion or didn't have time reshoot that particular scene.

    Those old subs really did travel on the surface as long as it was safe. The batteries and air supply only lasted maximum 2 days, but they had to travel very slow, like 2 knots to get that kind of endurance, so was not common to remain submerged nearly that long. Or they could use the snorkel for air to be just below the surface and run the engines, but they could still be spotted almost as easily as if on the surface by planes or from the exhaust plume. On the surface, they could travel much faster. Nuclear submarines don't need batteries and make oxygen from splitting seawater using electrolysis. They can stay underwater for as long as the food supplies last. The Royal Navy's HMS Vengeance set the record for 201 days without surfacing.

    * We are 33 years overdue for an Indiana Jones prequel film series, starring a new actor(but only if they choose someone *OTHER* than "Alden Ehrenreich"). Anthony Ingruber *WOULD* have been the perfect choice but, he's 34 years old now. I'm sure if they do a prequel series, they're gonna wanna pick it up where *The* *Adventures* *of* *Young* *Indiana* *Jones* television miniseries left off. The first film could begin where Indy was transferred to the *American* *Expeditionary* *Force* of the *U.S.* *Army* *Air* *Service* in 1918, and served with "Jock Lindsey" in the "Meuse-Argonne Offensive" of WWI on Jock's "Glenn Martin MB-1 Reconnaissance Bomber Biplane"(hence the bomber jacket, and how he knew how to fly that biplane in The Last Crusade).
    * The Paramount logo could transform into "Mont Verdun" or something. We are introduced to Indy and Jock. We only know it's Indy because there's some dialog, and Jock calls him "Indy". The caption reads *France* *1918.* After the opening sequence when they fly off into the sunset, they could cut to the outside of the "University of Chicago". The caption could read *Chicago* *1919.* It would cut to a college professor giving a lesson on what sounds perhaps like "Archaeology 101". It turns out it's "Abner Ravenwood". Indy is in his class, and he recognizes him as being the man he met named "Fedora" in Utah, 1912. After class, he walks up and talks to him, and Abner remembers him. They hit it off well.
    * After a montage scene, they take us forward through the school year, and they seem to have become friends. Abner has even apparently introduced Indy to his daughter "Marion", and they show us brief scenes of them dating, with Indy taking her to movies like "The Mark of Zorro", "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", "Charlie Chaplin" and "Buster Keaton" films, going to the "Ringling Brothers Circus". We see Abner planning an expedition for the coming summer in 1920, and he's teaching Indy the archaeological process and procedures of such an endeavor.
    * Then we jump ahead to them getting on a plane, and the 3 of them beginning their "little" adventure together to......wherever. Perhaps Peten, Guatemala, where they discover "The Temple of Tikal", but they've got tomb robbers on their trail, who work for a local organized crime syndicate perhaps. Who knows? This is what we need. Not another movie like "Dial of Destiny"(Lord have mercy). To be honest with you, I don't even think they should've done "Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". It's too bad movies cannot be "unmade".

    Funny you mentioned “Abu”, when talking about the monkey in this flick.
    Abu was voiced by Frank Welker (Best known as “Freddy“, in the Scooby Doo cartoons.).
    Mr. Welker also provided the voice/sounds for the monkey in Raiders!
    The large actor who played the bald German mechanic, was the late Pat Roach. He also played the big, hairy Sherpa Indy fights in Marion’s bar (The one in the “Shoot them. Shoot them both.” , scene.) He also plays the large Thugee guard in the prequel flick, “ Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom”. Denholm Elliott (Marcus Brody, in this, & the third Indiana Jones flick.), can also be seen as, “Colman”, in “Trading Places”.
    The “sword to a gunfight” scene was not what was originally planned. Harrison, along with most of the cast/crew was suffering from dysentery, from local food/water, & suggested that, instead of the partially filmed fight with Terry Richards (The tall Arab swordsman.), that Indy just shoot him.
    (This same gag can be seen in, “Gavin Blod, the man & his music”, a sketch by Benny Hill.)
    The terrified guide, at the beginning of the flick, was stuntman/actor Ted Grossman, who was also eaten by Bruce the shark, in JAWS! (And, he is scheduled to appear at the very next Hollywood Show, In Burbank CA, next weekend, along with Carl Gottlieb, who also acted in JAWS, & he also Re-drafted the script.)
    I hope you will search UA-cam for behind-the-scenes/making of videos for this, and all of the Indiana Jones films, after you’ve watched each one individually.
    Lastly… Your comment of Out, how the effects look old-school, deliberately… I believe is important. A terrific observation! You see, as I tell so many people, especially those naysayers about the last two flicks, that the Indiana Jones films are A-list, movies, and tributes to the B-movie, is made in the Times in which the films are set! So, if some of the effects are a little “wonky“, or seemingly outdated, It’s OK! They are trying to reflect the time periods of the films setting. Especially please remember this, with the fourth installment, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal skull“. Don’t want to give any spoilers, but… Think of the bee movies made in the 50s. What were their main features, or plot points, etc.…, And then watch the flick! I think during this in mind, will help you to understand, And enjoy all of the films, that much more! I’m glad you enjoyed this, my personal favorite of the five Indiana Jones films, (I saw it eight times its original release, in theaters! Strange, considering the trailers did nothing for me. I only went to see it on the recommendation of a friend who was working at a local haunted house with me, at the time. I was carrying a dickhead skull prop that I had made, and he told me that if I like that kind of stuff, then I need to see “Raiders of the lost Ark”. There’s lots of that stuff in there, he told me. I saw it, and I was hooked!) and hope you will continue to enjoy all five of them!
    Thanks, and happy new year to you both! :-)

      @@OfficialDNJmoviehouse I get it, about your plan, with the flicks.
      My main issue is… I just hope you’ll watch all five! I have seen many reactions to the fourth and fifth films, and they do enjoy them, Overall! Some reactors pay attention to the naysayers in their feeds, and ignore the fourth and fifth installment. To me, that’s their loss. They are entertaining in their own ways. TBH… It’s the second flag, Temple of doom, that is my personal least favorite in the series! And it has its great points! So sweet surround. At least watch them and create your own opinions. That’s what I’m concerned about. It’s like the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise number four to me is the weakest link in the chain, And five is actually a decent flick! Thanks for your reply, and your well wishes, and please enjoy the movies! :-)

    No one has said it yet, so here goes: Originally, there was a longish fight scene between whip and sword planned with the guy Indy shot. However, most of the crew (Including Ford) was down with dysentery from eating local food (filming was done in Tunisia). So someone -- reports who vary depending on who's talking -- suggested "Just shoot the guy!"
    John Rhys-Davies (Sallah) was so ill he wished to die. He calls it the single most horrible experience on a movie shoot he experienced ever. There's an episode of "Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum" with him where he talks in length about it. Highly recommended. The only one not affected by food poisoning was Steven Spielberg, because he only consumed canned food he had bought in bulk from Harrod's (Rhys-Davies' words).

    Even though the film had a PG rating, if you first saw it on tv the chances are the melting faces/exploding head scene was censored, which might explain why you don't remember it. The bloodier, more shocking scenes probably wouldn't make it into a modern PG rated film at all.

Every time a scary scene came on, she put her hands in front of his eyes. I remember wondering why she bothered to bring him at all.
