The Conan movies were what really put Arnold on the map. The first 2 movies were both released before The Terminator, Conan The Destroyer being released the same year, just a few months earlier. Everything after those movies just helped cement him as one of the main action heroes of his generation. Conan The Barbarian was so influential it was considered one of the greatest fantasy action movies until The Lord Of The Rings, which says something. Just imagine if Pumping Iron had never been made, which would have led to him not being cast for Conan, which in turn would have meant never getting any of roles he did. Amazing how one tiny little chance changed everything.
For me, this movie isn't any more over the top then modern action movies. You got John Wick wearing bulletproof suits that magically completely stop bullets. He's shot off the roof of a ?four? story building, hits multiple times on the way down and *doesn't* die. You got the Fast and the Furious series which completely breaks all laws of physics. I think the movies are presented differently but compreble in "over the top" ness.
Some of Arnold's best one-liners and that steel drum soundtrack is spectacular. This was the height of the box office battle between Stallone and Schwarzenegger. I was 11 when this came out. Saw it in theaters. Blown away.
Wow. I was only born a seven years later after the film was released. And watched it in 1998 on VHS. However, I didn't understand it that much. Then, after a few more years, I watched it again and understood it better. One of the best films featuring Arnold in my opinion. I'm from Russia BTW. And we also really like the movie called Last Action Hero. Although it failed at the box office in your country and is kind of considered a failure film, in our country it is considered one of the best films with Arnold on an equal standing with Commando, Predator and first Terminator. Second Terminator is the best of the best Arnold film IMAO.
Born in 89 & was fortune enough to absorb the last remaining nostalgia of the 80s empire ( malls , movies , style etc etc ). Even at 35 I feel things have changed quite a bit.
Hands down one of the best 80’s action flicks. Fun, action heavy, comedy and just straight up 80’s. This is one of my favorite Arnold films and the score is top tier. You really have to appreciate the fun of how movies were at this time.
"I eat Green Berets for breakfast." "Don't bother my friend, he's dead tired." "You're a funny guy, Sully. It's too I'll have to kill you last " "Hey Sully, remember when I said I'd kill you last?" "That Right, Matrix! You did!" "I lied." "OOHLLALLLAAAAA!" "Let off some steam, Bennett."
Bill Paxton was also in Terminator. (The only actor who was killed by an Alien, a Predator and a Terminator) The stewardess was played by Rae Dawn Chong. She's the daughter of Tommy Chong. Bill Duke, the green beret was also in Predator with Arnold.
I've always figured Rae Dawn Chongs character got involved because Sullys reaction to seeing Matrix made her realize Matrix had been telling her the truth. She kinda fucked him over and felt bad, and it made her instinctively try to help.
Watching this when it first out was a fun time, the audience loved these sort of films. And it rapidly became a standard for VHS Film nights, rotating with The Warriors, Assault on Precinct 13, Predator, Conan, Highlander etc.
Jaby, I was 20 when this movie came out, and me and my friends went to the theater to see it and loved it. We were clapping and cheering in the movie and swooning over Arnold's bulging physique. We laughed when Sully was tossed off the cliff, we could tell it was a dummy which was how everyone did those kinds of stunts back in the day. Mind you, this was when there were only 3 theaters in the movie house at the time and this movie was a literal "blockbuster" as we all stood outside in a huge, long line down the block waiting to get in to see it. Those were the good old days! .
'Commando' and the 'Die Hard' franchise are in the same cinematic universe because of the fictional country Val Verde being the location Jenny is held and a dictator in 'Die Hard 2' is from there.
It's even more interesting than that actually, 'cause the first Die Hard should have been Commando 2 with Arnold rescuing his daughter from the highrise.
We enjoyed the heck out of these over the top, one man army, untouchable hero movies at the time. However, after a whole boatload of them by every action star of the time it got a bit stale (still fun) watching the hero plow through armies of opponents without a scratch. That's why Lethal Weapon in '87 and then Die Hard in '88 and their sequels were such hits. The heroes still took out the bad guys but they got injured along the way. Sometimes they got really messed up and we loved it even when they were still a bit over the top.
This movie is legendary for having blatant mistakes and straight up comical stunts. When Arnold grabs the guy with the yellow car and picks him up you can CLEARLY see the harness attached to the guy's foot. The yellow car that had been supposedly damaged by the convertible during the car chase scene had the damage on the wrong side when Arnold turns it back down and drives it away. There are other crazy mistakes. See if you can catch them all. Great, entertaining movie that defines 80's action flicks.
There´s nothing to rationalize or intellectualize about Commando, it´s the type of 80s movie that many discovered on tv, after a day at work, you sit, you open a beer, unplug your brain and see some straightforward shootout. Checking if it was a dummy thrown out the cliff or a stunt double for Arnold, we didn´t give a damn. This movie is anyway the failed answer to Rambo from Schwarzi to Stallone. it´s a classic that find its place on shelves between Steven Seagal movie and Chuck Norris ones
In the opening scenes of Terminator Bill Paxton is one of the punks that Arnold kills near the beginning of the movie where he tells them he needs there clothes.
And you can still see the wire on Sully's leg. And I love when the car crashes into the pole, you can clearly see the doubles. And immediately Arnold and Rae are just fine
Good eye! The mall scenes were indeed filmed at Sherman Oaks Galleria. The mall itself is remodeled and looks completely different now, but the outside stretch of Ventura Blvd still remains pretty similar.
Those of us with any aviation experience laughed out loud at Arnold dropping from the nose gear of an airliner. Aside from the vertical drop of at least 100 feet, the takeoff velocity of an airliner is 150+ mph. So, either way, Arnold would have hit that marsh at an unsurvivable speed.
As someone who watched it at the time, I don’t think people were laughing at the cheesiness of it. It was dead serious, at least to me anyway, one liners and all. It was like the pinnacle of action movies back then when Stallone and Arnie ruled the roost. Those were the days when you could put a movie stars name on the poster and guarantee selling tickets. Put Stallone or Arnie’s name on a movie and we were all going to see it.
Vernon Wells, who played Bennet, was always a bit of a wild man, so when they filmed the big finale fight he didn't pull his punches. There were several points during that fight where Arnold is genuinely having to fight for real, which made that moment where Bennet's trying to shove his face into the flames especially intense because that wary, anxious look on Arnold's face is very real.
"True Lies" is awesome, but "The Last Action Hero" is also hilarious. You'll need to watch "Terminator 2," "Lethal Weapon," and "Amadeus" first so you get all the jokes.
Jaby, I come from that time. And no, we didn't find him embarrassing or funny. We thought it was a really cool action movie back then. Not the best movie of the year of course, but a seriously good action movie. PS: Please make a reaction of Shogun, its great.
How did we react? When you were about 13 it was pretty cool but still clearly over the top. Later, on VHS, it was a game of seeing how many times Arnold should have died or been badly injured, and more than a few "no way that would happen".
I was in the 5th grade so I couldn't see it at the theater. But a friend of mine had an older brother who took him. So at lunch he did a scene by scene run through of the film. It was about a year later when I finally saw it. Probably seen it at least thirty times since.
21:10 it's California pre-1989 so yes, you can go in a shop and buy all that stuff, and since it's pre-1989 there's no waiting period. (for those wondering, 1989 is when the machine gun ban happened so all of those full-autos are gone. At the same time I think the same Bill it also covered Bazooka's and anything like them so that M202 she uses)
34:47 The beginning of 'Terminator', he's killed by Arnold's T-800. That's why Bill Paxton has the distinction of being killed on screen by 3 Stan Winston creatures, Terminator, Alien Xenomorph and a Predator.
The fictional country of Valverde is also the same country where Predator takes place. Also the main bad guy in Die Hard 2 is also from Valverde. There was a Commando 2 where Matrix saved his daughter from terrorists in a skyscraper but Arnold backed out and it became Die Hard and changed to John McLaine. Paxton is also in Terminator. This is one of the greatest action movies ever for what it is
I grew up in a time when we went to the movies or a watched TV shows going in it with knowing what it was, mindless, silly and fun. We didn't overanalizing it or try to make logical sense in what was escapism from the real world. I definitely didn't watch movies from the 50's and 60's judging it by the technology we had in the 80's and 90's which I feel too many youtubers do now base their own biases by 2024 lenses. Which is kinda sad btw.a lot of movies were campy and the viewers knew it and still had fun and enjoyed themselves. I had more fun watching a terrible edited basic stunts movie than perfectly crafted and award winning films.
Saw this one when it first came out, and all that kept running through my mind was that Dan Hedaya's character should have demanded all the back pay he'd given to his mercenaries given how bad a job they did.
Oooohhhh my gawd! I'm so glad you watched this movie. My friend introduced me to it last year and we still crack up over it today. So many one liners 😂😂😂😂😂😂
A 'cool story' that means nothing to anyone except me: this was one of my endless rewatch movies as a kid, and the part where Bennett gets electrocuted then rushes at Arnie - seemingly turbo-charged - made my stupid kid brain believe that electricity had that effect on people and I eventually got the guts up to try and shock myself to test the theory. I got thrown across a room and suffered 2nd degree burns to my hand. I didn't die, but I also didn't get superpowered, and so that was probably the biggest disappointment of my life. How I survived my childhood is a mystery...
Commando 2 was in planing. There are some rumors that Commando 2 was changed into Die Hard. Steven de Souza the writer of Commando 1 & 2 and Die Hard denied that. The idea for Commando 2 was that Arnold should break into a huge building while Bruce Willlis tries to escape out of it in Die Hard. So some similarities are still there but Commando 2 wasn't changed into Die Hard. Frank Sinatra was prefered to be John McClane in Die Hard but he said he is to old and to rich to play him so Bruce Willis got the role.
The best double or triple feature on a Saturday is this movie, Rambo: First Blood Part 2 and Predator. The most quintessential masculine 80's action movies.
Did not know Bill Paxton was in this. The Schwarzxton trilogy: Terminator, Commando, True Lies. If you want an action movie resume though, check out Charles A. Tamburro. He worked on this movie, of course. And True Lies. And Terminator 2, Predator, Last Action Hero, End of Days, Twins. And First Blood and Hot Shots 2. And Demolition Man and Heat and The Long Kiss Goodnight and Die Hard and The Rock. And Seven and Blade Runner. And Collateral. And Herbie Fully Loaded. I feel like he deserves an award. Especially for the insane flying he did in T2.
Bill Paxton was in The Terminator, Aliens and Predator 2. He's the only actor to have been killed by a Terminator, an Alien and a Predator. Arnold was going to be in the Predator sequel, but other filming obligations like T2 prevented that from occurring. They brought in Gary Busey to play a different character that would have been Dutch, if Arnold was available. In regards to the actions o the military during the final scenes. The army would have been briefed about the situation so seeing a muscular man, carrying a little girl, would be enough evidence that he wasn't an enemy combatant; and they didn't have to engage.
You hit it exactly. The IS quintessential drive-in theatre 80's action movie. You loaded up the car, hit the food shack for popcorn and pizza, and shut your brain off.
Everyone forgot or is too young to remember Arnold wasn’t a huge star til After predator ! He did cannon movies which were great cheesy action movies I loved this movie
I have tried to watch this channel so many times, but instead of watching a movie enjoying the story you spend the whole time trying to look for things. Just keeps pulling me out of it
Jesus, could you two be any more critical? Haven’t you ever just watched a movie for fun? Just enjoy it for what it is. The quintessential 80s action film & Armold’s best one-liners.
This is top tier action and one of Arnold's best! Lots of good one liners too. As someone else mentioned, react to True Lies pls! Rae dawn Chong is Tommy Chong, of Cheech n Chongs, daughter.
The "Black" actress in the movie is named Rae Dawn Chong. She's Tommy Chong's daughter (of Cheech and Chong fame). She also discovered Chris Pratt who is currently Arnold Schwarzenegger's son in-law
The Conan movies were what really put Arnold on the map. The first 2 movies were both released before The Terminator, Conan The Destroyer being released the same year, just a few months earlier. Everything after those movies just helped cement him as one of the main action heroes of his generation. All these one man army action heroes are just a variation of John Matrix!

Music by James Horner.
Born in 89 & was fortune enough to absorb the last remaining nostalgia of the 80s empire ( malls , movies , style etc etc ). Even at 35 I feel things have changed quite a bit.
'True Lies' (1994) would make for a fun watch. 🧡
yes. please upvote this. in terms of action comedy a milestone. mr. and mrs. smith is nothing compared to this
That, and Sixth Day. IMO, The Sixth Day is the most underrated Arnold movie.
That shouldn't spoilt enjoyment of the film
"Eraser" also
That was silliest hilarious movie😂
Hands down one of the best 80’s action flicks. Fun, action heavy, comedy and just straight up 80’s. This is one of my favorite Arnold films and the score is top tier. You really have to appreciate the fun of how movies were at this time.
I like Raw Deal better.
"I eat Green Berets for breakfast."

He'll not need it that car😂
"How did you learn to shoot like that?"
"I read the instructions." -OG
There's sooooooooo many one liners on this movie, man! LOL
best arnold movie ever. the golden standard for action movies. the one liners alone are priceless
Bill Paxton was also in Terminator. (The only actor who was killed by an Alien, a Predator and a Terminator)
The stewardess was played by Rae Dawn Chong. She's the daughter of Tommy Chong.
Bill Duke, the green beret was also in Predator with Arnold.
Others were in Action Jackson
No, Bill was not the only one. Lance Henrikson was also killed by an Alien, a Predator, and a Terminator.
@@AbA_DBAA23 Well, Bishop in Aliens didn't actually "die" despite The Queen's best attempt. But, close enough I guess...
Bill Paxton was only killed by the predator. He was knocked out by the terminator and most likely killed in the atmosphere processor explosion.
@@shattaredentertainment4782he certainly died in aliens
I've always figured Rae Dawn Chongs character got involved because Sullys reaction to seeing Matrix made her realize Matrix had been telling her the truth. She kinda fucked him over and felt bad, and it made her instinctively try to help.
Spot on. I thought it was kinda obvious, don’t know how they missed it.
Because they wanted to not enjoy what is an incredible 80’s action flick.
Watching this when it first out was a fun time, the audience loved these sort of films. And it rapidly became a standard for VHS Film nights, rotating with The Warriors, Assault on Precinct 13, Predator, Conan, Highlander etc.
The guy that plays Bennett is Vernon Wells he's Australian he played the crazy Mohawk motorcyclist in the road warrior
And Mr Igoe from "Innerspace".
Yep, Wez. He spoofed the character in "Weird Science".
and Ransik in Power Rangers Time Force.
Bruce Woodley in Shrimp On The Barbie.
Outside of the Terminator films, and Total Recall, this is Schwarzenegger at his best. So many great catch phrases, too.
The Running Man also had him with some great one-liners
True Lies and Jingle All The Way too
I personally like Eraser w/ Vanessa Williams and can't forget Twins.
They're all corny..
kindergarten cop 😂,

Yes, that is the Sherman Oaks Galleria. It's also the mall used in Terminator 2. I believe it was remodeled after the '94 Northridge earthquake.
It's the mall they used in alot of films like Fast Times At Ridgemont High, Chopping Mall AKA Killbots, and others.
Movie studio: "So, Arnold, about part 2..."
Arnold: "No chance."
How about the continuity flaw with Sully's car. After the car chase, the driver's side is trashed, but when Matrix drives it away, it's pristine.
"What did you do with Sully ?"
"I let him go"
If Shakespeare was still alive he would be proud to have written that.
"She's fine. She doesn't need a therapist." XD
'it was clearly a dummy'. As if dropping a human being off a cliff was an option.
I think he meant dropping a realistic dummy was an option

Because Bill Paxton is in it.

Double Impact - Jean-Claude Van Damme
True Lies - Arnold Schwarzenegger
;)
This is 80s popcorn action at its FINEST!!!!!!!
Rae Dawn Chong is Tommy Chong's daughter.
I reccomend American Ninja (1985). Or, Revenge of the Ninja (1983).
41:31 It's called *camp* Jaby and it's something that's completely lost on modern audiences. I miss it 😢
26:40 - 26:50 might literally be the best ten seconds of the entire 80's.
First time I've seen anyone check this movie out as far as reactions go! Kudos!
I have to admit...for me...Arnold Schwarzenegger really does handle comedy so well with Danny Devito in "Twins" and "Junior"
speedos were a big thing in the 80's
That green beret line Arnold said was actually a shot at Rambo 😂
"The long Kiss Goodnight" Would be dope on the channel.
Everyone forgot or is too young to remember Arnold wasn’t a huge star til
After predator ! He did cannon movies which were great cheesy action movies I loved this movie
The people who made this movie knew they were making something very tongue in cheek, give them more credit.
This movie actually came out in 1985, my birth year.
THE definitive Arnold movie.
It doesn't get more 80s than Commando.
Lets check out an old movie and point out every flaw and make fun of everything instead of even trying to enjoy it for what it is! Yay!
Not sure if you two know this.. but Rae Dawn Chong is the real life daughter of the Iconic Tommy Chong :)
The bad guys have real Stormtrooper aim . Vernon Wellswho plays Bennett is an Aussie .
JAMES HORNERS SCORE FOR THIS IS VERY SIMILAR TO HIS SCORE FOR 48HOURS. WITH THE STEEL DRUMS
I have tried to watch this channel so many times, but instead of watching a movie enjoying the story you spend the whole time trying to look for things. Just keeps pulling me out of it
Rae dawn Chong was a dream for a lot of us too and we watched a lot of her work back then!
Best and hottest gargoyle EVER.
@@scotthewitt258 "You promised!"
You were originally correct about Bennett being Australian in real life. Vernon Wells (born 31 December 1945)[ is an Australian character actor .
The "Black" actress in the movie is named Rae Dawn Chong. She's Tommy Chong's daughter (of Cheech and Chong fame). She also discovered Chris Pratt who is currently Arnold Schwarzenegger's son in-law
