Memories from California Speedway

- It was a two mile "cookie cutter" track with not a lot of banking, how did California Speedway turn out so great? As the asphalt aged, Fontana evolved from a boring one-lane track, to a multi-groove circuit beloved by drivers and fans. Throughout its history as a two-mile superspeedway, Fontana produced more highlights than most tracks. Like a friend who offered memories of excitement, tragedy, anger, and joy, NASCAR executives have decided it's time to say goodbye.
Fastest lap in the world,
Fastest race in the world,
We will live to regret this loss.
Beautiful tribute, and may we never forget Greg Moore.
Well said my friend, well said.
This is America for you!
The most unfree country in the western world these days..
Europe would never demolish a historic racetrack just for some corrupt property developers!
Gonna miss Fontana, as much as I miss Ontario and Riverside. SoCal is a great home for a great track, and when nascar finally had a place that wasn't demolished for development they decided to demolish it. But I'm sure racing on the old pitlane and frontstretch will be great, and bring in tons of people /s.
RIP Greg Moore. He may have had the talent and charisma to save CART/IndyCar from itself.
Also, 241.428 mph is absolutely preposterous and those year 2000 CART cars looked and sounded awesome!
I’m gonna miss this track so much. Hope the rebuild is great
it wont be steve phelps needs to give his head a shake
"....I'm gonna bust his ass"
'Thanks Tony'
"Thank You."
😂😂😂
I'm gonna miss that place, but seeing the Gen 7 cross the line for the final time there made me wonder if it even had a place in motorsport anymore. The Gen 7 made that final shot look like it was in slow motion. A fast track requires fast cars, and IndyCar wasn't interested.
Thus ends the story of one of the best speedways in the world.....a world that, frankly, didn't deserve it anyway.
(Some research into the closed course speed record indicates that a specially developed Oldsmobile-powered prototype was the one to claim the honor, but that doesn't make the achievement of Penske's Reynard 2Ki-Honda and its driver, Gil de Ferran, any less impressive.)
A fitting tribute to California's last great cathedral of speed. Even though I live in San Diego, this place is my home track. My dad and I have been to every cup race there since 2014. We even saw the last Indycar race there in 2015. I've brought friends with me to races before, and they almost always had a good time. We had a blast going last year! Unfortunately, I won't be able to attend this year, but I'm really looking forward to Sunday regardless.
We can now add Kyle Busch’s first win with RCR, and the final race under the lights at Auto Club in the Xfinity series to send off one of the best tracks Nascar has had. I’ve been driving from Vegas to see this race with my dad every year since 2012. We’ve seen phenomenal racing and amazing finishes, and as a huge Kyle Busch fan, this is my happiest place on earth. It’s so sad to see it go, but it was sent off pretty well.
Thanks Tony🤣 still the greatest interview ever
Funny, that I wasn't super nostalgic about this track because I was still stuck thinking of it in the the '97-200x era where this track was a boring Michigan clone. After some thought you realize how many bangers this track put on. Indy was insane and never should have left (RIP Greg Moore). Starting to feel about California Speedway the way I do about Riverside...
First Chicagoland, then Atlanta, and now Auto Club. Rip to another amazing track
PTs spin off 2 at 4:31 is eerily similar to Greg Moores fatal crash Oct 31, 99
I will miss this track. Yeah there was a stretch where racing there was stale in the late 00s but in the 10s the track really got a second lease on life and had many amazing moments.
one thing i noticed going through this, especially the nascar portion, all the energy and joy is kinda gone from the sport right now. i don't know what happened. super exciting battles for the finish don't really occur as much anymore.
RIP Auto Club Speedway 2-Mile. You will be missed forever and will never, ever, ever, ever, be forgotten.
Gil's qualifying engine shrieking with the amount of RPMs being turned
JGTC (Super GT) also had a one-off exhibition race here.
This track was a part of my childhood and the place where I lived NASCAR for years.
Like someone else in the comments, I also live in the San Diego area, so this is pretty much my home track. I have been going to every single Cup race there with my dad since Fall 2010. It's been an annual tradition for me and my dad since our family moved to California in Summer 2010 to go to NASCAR at Auto Club. Very sad to see the 2 mile oval go away. I would love to see those fan videos from 1997 and 1998 isolated on their own if possible, or the links to them!
Gordon winning the 1997 race was a perfect way to start off the auto club oval era
It's Reminds Me Of Ontario Motor Speedway In Ontario California From 1970 To 1980 Can't Wait For California Speedway Moved To Short Track Thanks For Uploading
That is a waste. If you want short tracks then nascar should go to Iowa or IRP. Make North Wilkesboro a points race
My fav is Kasey Kahne sweeping the races in 2006, I loved his bush series car, snuggle #9 dodge charger. I wish California Speedway I mean (auto club) still had the night races, they were something special growing up
I think tearing the track down is one of the dumbest things I've heard in a long time. It reminds me of how Atlanta destroyed their track for a gimmick side show now or how Texas had a great track that had great racing for years but wanted to destroy that for their terrible experience now.
It seems like Nascar goes backwards when it comes to aiding the tracks on the evolution. I think Auto Club was fine just needed some new paving and maybe progressive banking to a further extent but still it could have been a great track for years. Now its gone and whats the outcome going to be? Another 2007 version of Bristol that bores folks in an area that at times has struggled to bring in new fans?
Things like this is why alot of folks stopped attending races or watching them on television. Its funny tracks will report higher attendance yet many of those same tracks have fewer seats now than what they had 10 years ago.
Auto Club was a great track and it will surely be missed by fans.
15:15 easily my favorite moment of the auto club speedway
Thanks for the memories Fontana race track.
Always sad to see another part of NASCAR torn down by bad decisions...
I was hoping they would convert it to a 2.5 mile super speedway
I remember watching the inaugural 1997 Winston Cup race live with my dad, and also when the Busch Series did its inaugural race there, too.
First the Murph gets torn down and now Fontana. If the Padres keep it up they’re gonna tear down Petco Park next😂😂😂😂😂 Seriously though, I’ve been going to Fontana since 2007 and I’m going to miss it. I’m so glad we finally did the racing experience thing and got to run some laps on it before it’s gone. Sure would like to have a little chuck of the asphalt for my memorabilia case
Great video, I was there for the first race and many more, great memories.
Steve Byrnes "thanks Tony".
Tony Stewart "thank youuuuu".
I hope nascar backs out of this. Texas deserves this
Indycar 2015. The greatest race ever run 👏🏼👏🏼
Kinda not, considering that IndyCar's own teams called them out on it. That is the exact kind of "race" that killed Dan Wheldon.
Memories from Auto Club Speedway 1997-2023
Memories from Auto Club Speedway 1997-2023
18:40 and Robin Miller has right. RIP Robin and RIP Auto Club Speedway
Best moment 6:12!
14:40 I was there that night
They destroyed history.
To make this twice the distance of a HS track is so dumb. Just close it down and throw some more shit homes on the property.
We're just gonna gloss over this track sucking for over a decade? Seriously it was not good. Same people who complain NASCAR is abandoning short tracks really hate when NASCAR wants to add a new short track.
I remember the first cup race there was one of the most boring races ever. Jeff Gordon dominated and Mark Martin was the only other driver who was even halfway competitive. Although I also remember some great racing there after the pavement was about ten years old. I especially remember a truck race, can't recall the year, that had some of the best racing I've ever seen.
1st
Nascar lost momentuun in Ca bcus too many cry babies too many dos and donts and playoffs wtf is that my last race was 2006 for nascar my last cart race was 2000 and it rained out didnt care much for IRL
Thank God! This is the worst track on NASCAR circuit besides TX
i mean no
And of course he's a social injustice warrior too. 😂🤣
Do you watch the races for the crashes? You’re talking absolute boswellox, Joe Bob.
I say leave it as is. Auto club is great as is. I hope they go to Michigan twice next year
