Never was a fan of Nascar, mainly because here in Finland no one follows it and it's seen as low skill motor sport. Around 2013 i did few races in iRacing with truck and realized it's hard sport and many things must be spot on to win a race. Wery skilled drivers and teams! Thank you again Nascarman for the great content and education to us ignorant people like me 🙏
Fawk nascar used to be so good. I never tire of watching the races from 90s. So much tragedy, so many great stories, so many good finishes. Ernie definitely earned his spot in the sports history. As usual you've knocked another one completely out of the park. Ernie was my dad's favorite driver. I was fortunate to get to know Ernie and Jared racing karts at Ocala Grand Prix. I took my dad to citrus county to watch jared run the super late model. He got to meet Ernie and have a Earnhardt Lumina phone that he customized into The Kodak #4 get autographed. The Irvan's are great people. To facilitate that meeting for my dad was a class act by Ernie.
Man I stumbled across this documentary today while learning my new smart TV. I enjoyed it so much! My first experience with NASCAR was getting a job as a mechanic in a TEXACO service center. Naturally I took an interest in the Texaco/Havoline #28 and learned about Ernie and Robert Yates. Davey had already had his unfortunate accident and Ernie was driving the 28 car. I have so many memories from that time of my live. I had actually built a small shrine for Ernie and Robert from die cast cars and other memorabilia I had found (including a copy of Stock Car magazine….No more swerving). I remember being on the road on vacation in Colorado when I heard about the crash in Michigan. I was so bummed!! Ernie could have won the championship that year and I was looking forward to seeing the joy that I have gotten so fond of seeing when any team wins a race. I learned many other things I didn’t know about Ernie and I got to see some old footage of Mr. Yates. Love it!!!
An amazing piece. Ernie was one of my favorites. Burned that #4 Kodak car into my memory as a kid and he made it one of my favorite paints of all time.

I was at Michigan that weekend, drove down from Ontario with my family. I seem to remember his souvenir trailer being shut down after the wreck, or maybe not even open on the Sunday. I could be remembering wrong as I have a mean case of CRS.
Holy crap this was riveting! This guy missed his calling, should be a legit documentary maker. This was so good I watched it twice now. Ernie is still the greatest outsider villain in NASCAR history, there was something about him that was so intense you couldn’t fabricate it. With Ernie nothing was fake or phony about him, walked to his own beat and didn’t care what people thought or who got in his way!!! You could make a movie about him NO BS!!! I had no idea about all the details, loosing his brother, his dad taking off on him, basically forcing his racing career by sheer determination ( was not going to be denied), his best friend dying, the ex wife ( that was gut wrenching), kids not being his. I thought I knew how complicated Ernie’s relations were in the garage but it was far more complicated than I thought. We all know the story or surviving and overcoming. Ernie will always have a place in my heart.

Without a doubt, the 2 very best autobiographies I ever read were in the following order: Johnny Cash's auto-bio, and then #2: was Ernie Irvin's. It's been long out of print for decades now, but if anyone stumbles across a used copy in decent condition, it should be a bargain price, but the book is phenomenal. Trust me. And just like Johnny Cash, Irvin left nothing out.......he told it all....and he told the truth. Both men went through hell and back in their lives on multiple occasions, just as both men nearly died.
I grew up watching Irvan as a kid at Stockton 99 speedway. He was always a favorite and when he made it to the big show, I was thrilled. When he moved to the 36 I followed along as a fan. M&Ms was an awesome sponsor and treated him great, which made me an M&Ms fan. When he retired I stayed a fan of the car for better or worse. He's onebof the greatest ever.
So if Ernie Irvan hadn't caused that wreck at Darlington in 1990 then Dale Jarrett wouldn't have gotten his opportunity in the 21 for the Wood Brothers and gotten the kick start he needed to turn his career in the Cup series around.

The first one was when I was 10 years old two more after that I am I was before I was 18 and when I got to my 20s, I had another one when I turned my last one for me I had six so when I turned 45 I slipped and fell in my final sixth one and I didn’t feel good all after all that I had it I had a smoke in a small crash that was that was the fifth or 61 every day I live with a blurry eye. I didn’t have the protocols to do that stuff but my smart I’m a smart driver, hit my head, watching the road all And also, I have a lot of depression, but it doesn’t make me sad

Ernie was the man that showed Robert Yates what his cars would do , when Ernie was hurt I called his mother to find out how he was doing, he was missed on the track and I still think about what he would have done if he wouldn't have had that wreck .
Knew about the professional ups and downs for Ernie but never knew about some of the stuff he went through in his personal life (such as losing his brother as a small child or learning that his first wife was not only cheating on him but that he wasn't the biological father of either of the boys she gave birth to).
As someone who is kicking 40 in the ass, I got my first camera for Christmas of 1990. 1991 came, my old man telling me that was the film in my camera, and I was an Irvan fan. Crazy thinking when Ernie was forced to retire from his second MIS injury I was forced to chose someone else. That would be Smoke himself, Tony Stewart.
Irvan was something else to watch. You could tell Larry Mac that very highly of his ability. If not for a freak crash hed probably be a 1 or 2 time champion.
Ernie is one of the most underrated drivers in NASCAR history. In 1994 he was giving Dale Earnhardt a run for his money in the championship race before the Michigan crash.
Had that wreck in Michigan not have happened and he stayed on the positive trajectory he was on, Ernie Irvan would've likely snagged the championship. In the first 20 races that year, these were his stats: - 3 Wins - 13 Top 5 Finishes - 15 Top 10 Finishes - 5 Poles - 1,777 Total Laps Led - Avg. Finish of 8.95 He was having his career best season.

All i remember is my dad saying "swervin' Irvan" and shaking his head while we watched races. We were Petty fans.

Having grown up in Stockton, I love Ernie and seeing all the references to Speedway 99. If you ever get a chance go see the races at 99.
Watching him and Troy Beebee every week was awesome. My baby sitter was a trophy girl at 99.
I remember when Neil came back to host "Winners " and we were so happy for him and glad he was doing well - I must admit it got me - So many of my heroes are gone - This was a tough week - With Pete and Kris moving in on I guess I was ready to let it go-

Ernie was the man that showed Robert Yates what his cars would do , when Ernie was hurt I called his mother to find out how he was doing, he was missed on the track and I still think about what he would have done if he wouldn't have had that wreck .

Knew about the professional ups and downs for Ernie but never knew about some of the stuff he went through in his personal life (such as losing his brother as a small child or learning that his first wife was not only cheating on him but that he wasn't the biological father of either of the boys she gave birth to).

As someone who is kicking 40 in the ass, I got my first camera for Christmas of 1990. 1991 came, my old man telling me that was the film in my camera, and I was an Irvan fan. Crazy thinking when Ernie was forced to retire from his second MIS injury I was forced to chose someone else. That would be Smoke himself, Tony Stewart.
Irvan was something else to watch. You could tell Larry Mac that very highly of his ability. If not for a freak crash hed probably be a 1 or 2 time champion.
Ernie is one of the most underrated drivers in NASCAR history. In 1994 he was giving Dale Earnhardt a run for his money in the championship race before the Michigan crash.

Grew up a huge Irvan fan. Til I got older and heard the McClure story of how he got out of the #4 contract. Kinda soured me tbh
Had that wreck in Michigan not have happened and he stayed on the positive trajectory he was on, Ernie Irvan would've likely snagged the championship. In the first 20 races that year, these were his stats:

Every once in a while I think about the good ol' days of nascar. Martin, Earnhardt, Jarret, Wallace, Allison, Elliott, Irvan, Labonte, Parsons, Petty. Thank God we had so many good sundays of racin' fun. The commentators were just as much fun too. Don't forget Dave Marcus or Dick Trickle. So many characters, they're like old friends!
