One thing to note about the performance of Shogun 2, it's heavily single threaded which is why it can chug despite you having a very good graphics card. This game loves its processor clock speeds. MSI Afterburner stats show me that a single thread on my processor is heavily pegged up to 99% while all the other threads sit idle and my GPU is only at ~50% utilization. I've seen similar behaviour for older games so this could just mostly be the engine being designed around the hardware at the time. Everyone expected processor to go faster and even go beyond 5 Ghz as standard, so nobody thought about developing games around multithreading. Nobody at the time expected multithreading to actually be the way to go for performance today.
Yes, performance issues are far more likely due to single core focus of the engine than it being 32 bit. Current total war games are most likely built to be able to utilize as many cores as the CPU provides and so run smoother in big battles.
When people say the game is well optimized they aren't lying. I couldn't even run Empire Total War, which came years before, but i have no porblems playing Shogun 2 on low with medium-sized units.

I love this review for a few reasons: it's exceedingly late, which means it's gonna help folks who may have compatibility issues on newer systems; it's weighing the game more on its own merits than just mindlessly comparing it to Rome 1 or Medieval 2 as some old school TW fans tend to do; and the exceedingly kiwi accent. The only thing I disagree with in this video is the statement that Warhammer 2 is the best example of a Total War game thus far. Mechanically, maybe, but a huge part of the appeal of the franchise has always been the large scale battles set in their different takes of different historical periods and settings. You can't take that away from Total War even if it permanently shifts to fantasy, like going into LotR, Game of Thrones, or even WarCraft lore (which I'd honestly love to see). In that regard, I'd still say Shogun 2, especially including Fall of the Samurai, is the epitome of a Total War game among the post-Medieval 2 releases.

This may not resonate with anyone but my first experience of Shogun 2 was awesome. I was blown away at the time. I was 17 and it was late 2011 I think, and I used to smoke up a lot in those days if you know what I mean. I downloaded the Shogun 2 demo on my mediocre laptop and had so much fun with the Chosokabe when I'd come home late at night whilst the affects of smoking gradually wore off. I managed to buy the game then but spent a lot of my time out of the house back then. So I'd blaze up with a friend who never played total war but was into console and I'd rant with him when about to leave his about how awesome the game is and how I'll end up playing it when I get home etc. He barely cared but allowed me my rants cause I introduced him to medieval 2 and he liked it a lot. Funny actually.. I remember introducing it to him and then I came over the next day or so and he'd racked up over a hundred turns as England. I was like holy crap. Anyway that's the era that Shogun 2 reminds me of. Probably should have spent that time working hard on my A levels instead but why let huge life decisions and the ramifications of wasting life away get in the way of a good sesh?
"Some clans may begin in a more precarious position than others" *Legendary Uesugi flashbacks* What timing though. Was surprised to see a video on this when I'd been playing shogun 2 just a couple of months back, and shocked to hear a good ol' kiwi accent.
If you are outside US/UK, *CreativeAssembly has inflated the regional pricing for all Total War games.* My region (India) saw upto 200% hike in prices than before. Of course, it did not get any press because it didn't affect the main consumers (US/UK) and no matter the protest on forums, they didn't change it.
12:59 Napoleon is available on Mac though. I should know, I’ve been playing for years. It was released simultaneously on PC and Mac in 2010 as far as I recall.
To me it's a great game but it's biggest flaw is diplomacy. Vassals are a key to ruin any great alliance u may forged as your allies will always attack them as if they are an inferior independent faction. Other than that it's pretty good.
@@americanteehee5699 unfortunately I didnt play at release due to not having the hardware. I got it when emperor edition came out and it seemed pretty good to me. The large consensus is that it's in alot better state than at launch BIG time. They even updated it as recently as last year I think? Even added family tree system back into it. And with Divide Et Impera (mod overhaul)..let me just say I've never gone back to vanilla. This mod ads tons of depth like population systems whitch you can only recruit units in respect to their population pool, whitch is then separated by "class" those specific units belong too. Area of recruitment units, supply chains, longer battles, even sub mods to tweak these things to your liking. The mod team to this day continues to work on and improve this game with consistent patches for the most part. I implore you to re visit rome 2 if not solely for this mod alone. Do a little research on it and I promise you wont be disappointed. I have over 1500 hours in Rome 2 with the majority of that time spent playing DEI.
In short, It still holds up as the best historical TW game for one reason for me: The factions are all extremely balanced so it puts an emphasis on tactics, which is really what high level TW play is all about. Shogun 2 can really punish you for making mistakes which I think is great in an age where most games hold your hand all the way through.
Good review. Got this free on steam to add to the collection. I'm 700 hours into Warhammer 2 with all dlc for 1 and 2. 3k is amazing as well and runs really smooth.
Great Video, and for me - as I guess many others in the comment section here - I got I for free! Gonna be the first entry for me Since the Original Rome - Total War. Your points are well presented, your use of game footage is great, your commentary is interesting and kept me engaged, really enjoyed it! :) So, whilst it's installing I'm gonna subscribe to you and go through some of your other videos, thanks for making and releasing this with such impeccable timing! ^^'
There is also a minor bug: When you lead all your units over a bridge at siege battles, some of the soldiers get stuck at the sides of the bridge and don't find a way to their unit. That's why I let them march through the rivers.
5:13 Smoke effects for Parrot guns don't seem to work. A solution for me was to download a "mod" from steam that really is a patch to the game, fixing the Parrot gun's particle effects.
seeing those prices convinced me to get everything for $20 in the summer sale, plus I've been buying almost everything total war except Three kingdoms and the games before Medieval 2, getting literally almost everything without breaking the bank is a true blessing, thank you steam for your amazing summer sales
I'll leave my opinion here. A huge fan of this game. I have all DLCs and Fall of the samurai(if you consider it a different game). Totally worth the money and one of the best games i ever played and always return to. Shogun 2 is probably the best total war game for me.
One bug that i noticed is that when sending units through destroyed enemy gates, the players units run almost single file through the far left side of the gate. Extremely frustrating when trying to charge with No-Dachi.
Got it for free. Loving it so far, havent played any real RTS since age of empires back in the day. If anyones looking for a new friend to play with, hit me up!
Yes you should play. It’s the best total war game so far. There’s a lot of good players & clans back in 2011-2014 and many tournaments, i hope they will play again. For me Oda clan are the best in campaigns, I beat legendary mode twice with no mods.
It’s nice to see someone sharing my hesitant love with shogun 2 also a great video got yourself a sub from me. Btw the music used was the soundtrack of shogun as well as its dlc or some other pieces?
To be honest, I am a huge Total war player and the truth is that Shogun 2 is worth it. I really love the small duels during battle which is to have never been seen afterwards. In Rome II it is not so deepen cinematic as in Shogun 2. Shogun 2 is just great. The base game of course.
Shogun 2 was really special in one regard. Cavalry. In all previous total war games Cav reigned supreme no matter the circumstances. But in Shogun 2 unless you're super careful your beautiful array of Yari Cav will get destroyed by Yari Ashigaru. The trick was to wait for the opportunity to strike instead of just slamming them in the rear and expecting results.
This is the BEST total war game. I just love this game to bits. Warhammer 2 is great and has the best replay-ability, but I just love Fots's samurai and gatling gun action. Shogun 2 is such a unique game.

So in essence, if you like sengoku Japan I would really recommend the game and I can totally see why it's many people's favourite
Yes man yes over 1200 hours experience here says yes 😂😂😂 I loved this game.
I'd enjoy a warhammer 2 review. I just got into it in december and dam is it good
And so it shall be!
:D
I don’t know how I just found your channel, but I’m so glad I did. Warhammer 2 review would be awesome!
Thanks for the kind words! Planned :D

What timing though.
200%...
bruh
My wife and I racked up 400+ hrs of game time on this.
Loved this game.
Can you play this with your friend on same campaign?
9 Minutes not sure if you can do that.
We just played our own seperate games under the one steam account and the time played says over 400+ hrs.
@@9minutes236 You can play different factions in a co-op and a versus mode on normal campaign
@@MyPiez thanks for the info :)
Very helpful. Just picked up the game and DLC for like $20 during the Steam summer sale
19:35 one day later XD
As someone who has never played a TW game, thanks for going into detail on the basics of what the game is about.
My pleasure, hope if helped you out!
I use to play this game for 20 hours a day with a French dude called Alex... i miss my Shogun bro in arms
PepeHands
Playing fall of the samurai. Still my favorite total war game. "Let loose the gatling gun" Wipe them out.. all of them.
You should try Rome 2 now, with wonderful "Divide et Impera" historical overhaul 😉👍
I'll check it out!
IMO the best total war campaign to date. Especially multiplayer campaign.
Yea where the majority of my TW hours spent lol great mod with a wonderful team behind it
How much have Rome 2 changed since it's release? I haven't played it since then, because back then it had a lot of bugs, which made me go crazy
Wtf Zade is back !! And with a huge amount of views
Feels good to be back!
I'll see about that last part, I'd still like to stream every so often :)
@@Zade_95 Oh yeah :D
In short, It still holds up as the best historical TW game for one reason for me: The factions are all extremely balanced so it puts an emphasis on tactics, which is really what high level TW play is all about. Shogun 2 can really punish you for making mistakes which I think is great in an age where most games hold your hand all the way through.
As I started doing iaido a couple of months ago and became a total Japan buff, I finally have to try Shogun. Only ever played Rome and Medieval TWs.
My answer : *OF COURSE !*
Yes 100 percent its been a while since i got hooked to a game. Its really impresive.
we would love a TWWH: 2 review ;)
Good review. Got this free on steam to add to the collection. I'm 700 hours into Warhammer 2 with all dlc for 1 and 2. 3k is amazing as well and runs really smooth.
Thank you!
ITS FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Watching 2 samurai duel as soldiers surround them to watch is always magical
best one in the series yet. rome 1 still good too.
For anyone interested all the DLC is currently 75% off on Steam and the base game is free! Making it a total of £15 for the lot. Enjoy!
Me: looks at Ghost of Tsushima
“Should you play Total War: Shogun 2 in 2020?”
Me: No, I dont think I will
Brah
“Why not both?”
Steven Cerri “I choose... BOTH!” -Towelie
I am playing both, why not you??
Poor gang
Shogun 2 is 75% until October 19th on Steam. All total war games on sale. I got Shogun 2+DLC+FOS all for $19.98
i’ve got 1,000 hours in tww2. please review it and tel me it’s good.
You got it boss
I just bought Tomb Kings so pretty keen to get them a rip
It is sad.
Your abbreviation looks like Total World War 2
Great Video, and for me - as I guess many others in the comment section here - I got I for free! Gonna be the first entry for me Since the Original Rome - Total War.
Your points are well presented, your use of game footage is great, your commentary is interesting and kept me engaged, really enjoyed it! :)
So, whilst it's installing I'm gonna subscribe to you and go through some of your other videos, thanks for making and releasing this with such impeccable timing! ^^'
Thank you! Really means a lot :)
Love your videos like always
Will you continue your "should you play" of the Red Alert series?
Really expect hearing more about that!
Thank you! I will be - there's a good chance the next video is Red Alert 2... ;)
There is also a minor bug: When you lead all your units over a bridge at siege battles, some of the soldiers get stuck at the sides of the bridge and don't find a way to their unit. That's why I let them march through the rivers.
CA:
"Total War Shogun 2 Free"
Total war veterans:
"Shamefur dispray!"
how to get fall of samurai dlc there's no in store page.
Warhammer 2 review ftw
you got chief
5:13 Smoke effects for Parrot guns don't seem to work. A solution for me was to download a "mod" from steam that really is a patch to the game, fixing the Parrot gun's particle effects.
Good that's there's a fix! I just looked away and tried not to worry... :P
Going to play for the 1st time in a long time tomorrow. Lost my disk years ago. Had to stop watching when you started loving on WH 😂 duces
Have fun!
What a timing for you to upload this review!
Tell me about it :P
Excellent video thank you. Subscribed.
Yo thanks for watching mate!
seeing those prices convinced me to get everything for $20 in the summer sale, plus I've been buying almost everything total war except Three kingdoms and the games before Medieval 2, getting literally almost everything without breaking the bank is a true blessing, thank you steam for your amazing summer sales
Hell yeah, enjoy!
Simple answer... is of course NO
It's 2021, you can't play it in 2020 anymore unfortunately.
I'll leave my opinion here.
A huge fan of this game. I have all DLCs and Fall of the samurai(if you consider it a different game). Totally worth the money and one of the best games i ever played and always return to. Shogun 2 is probably the best total war game for me.
Medieval 3 Total War will be the biggest game for me
Gotta admit, I'd love that!
This is the only Total War game I've ever finished. It's so good. Even today.
Right now Shogun 2 with ''Ultimate Immersive mod'' that is intended for the vanilla campaign, makes the game freaking awesome.
Great quality, your channel will grow big
Thank you!
genuinely, give Rome 2 another chance. it's now my favourite total war after I hated it on release and it now clocks in at 1200 hours on steam.
I will! Looking forward to it actually
One bug that i noticed is that when sending units through destroyed enemy gates, the players units run almost single file through the far left side of the gate. Extremely frustrating when trying to charge with No-Dachi.
Great video.
I'm excited for more Warhammer/40k and total war reviews.
Thank you! Me too, I've got to admit, recently I've been reading a lot of Warhammer stuff and it's quite interesting. Keen to get into mroe!
My only problem with it is that you need 384020193829 DLCs to unlock all the troop types in avatar conquest
LOl played it for the first time a few days ago. I don't remember anything of those days except shogun. Super addictive
Got it for free. Loving it so far, havent played any real RTS since age of empires back in the day. If anyones looking for a new friend to play with, hit me up!
Glad you're enjoying it!
I just got it let me set up my account
Free on Steam now! for a couple of days I believe
Yes you should play. It’s the best total war game so far. There’s a lot of good players & clans back in 2011-2014 and many tournaments, i hope they will play again.
For me Oda clan are the best in campaigns, I beat legendary mode twice with no mods.
i just really cant belive that CA made shogun 2 ,one of the BEST total war game ever i played for free..just cant belive this, just wow respect
Feels good!
@@Zade_95 indeed sir!!
It’s nice to see someone sharing my hesitant love with shogun 2 also a great video got yourself a sub from me. Btw the music used was the soundtrack of shogun as well as its dlc or some other pieces?
All from the base game or dlc :)
And thank you!
Love the border man, any tips on how to make one?
You mean on the thumbnail? It's just some gradients and blending modes on twitter. Feel free to DM me on twitter :)
15:55 or you can just buy a brand new sealed DVD limited edition which includes Rise of the Samurai & Fall of the Samurai for around $12 on ebay.
This is the BEST total war game. I just love this game to bits. Warhammer 2 is great and has the best replay-ability, but I just love Fots's samurai and gatling gun action. Shogun 2 is such a unique game.
The complete edition is 20-30 bucks on Amazon for ALL ( dlc in it) , at least in europe
Why no one is still online?
