Well, after ww1 (and the "treaty" of Versailles) it was about Upper Silesia and a part of it was taken by / given to Poland. After ww2 all of Silesia was given to Poland (together with Eastern Brandenburg, Pomerania with Danzig and the southern part of Eastern Prussia.

My great grandfather volunteered to fight in WW1 in 1918 at age 16-17. In 1919 he and two of his brothers (who both saw action at Verdun and Ypres) joined the Freikorps. I think it was called “Epp”. They fought in Munich in 1919. They later became close friends with Bulgarian Tsar Ferdinand (exiled), he even attended my great grandfathers wedding.

The more i learn of the Freikorps the more I sympathize with them as to why they formed in the first place. War hardened veterans fighting for their nation which in their view (and because of certain aspects of Versailles treaty) were being mistreated with many attempted communist revolts.
Those Freikorps troups were really tough guys, fighting on in the east to protect Silesia and inside Germany against extremists is really admireable. They were no homogenous group tho, you had different kinds of Freikorps groups in each German region. Some were ofc more brutal, others were very noble defending German regions by risking their life. It is a short but extremely interesting time.

Second worst regime to ever have existed. I can think of many that were worse or just as ‘bad’. If you are interested in the missions and history of the Freikorps, I would heartily recommend the autobiographical novel "Die Geächteten" / "The Outlaws" by Ernst von Salomon! He was one of the most radical nationalists of the Weimar Republic, but he was also in opposition to the National Socialists and was married to a Jewish woman. The book is one of the highlights of Weimar nationalist literature!
The Freikorps were true German patriots, not fighting for money or power, but fighting to keep the people safe, I think that shows the patriotism that the German soldiers coming home from The Great War had, they still had a love fur das Vaterland and were willing to fight again to keep the people and land of Germany safe, Für Deutschland!

Also there was an effective civil war.
In the meantime the blockade of German ports continued, leading to massive starvation and death following the armistice.
This tends to lead to a discussion over the issue of 12m ethnic Germans that have been forced onto cattle cars in a fit of ethnic cleansing.

Second worst regime to ever have existed. I can think of many that were worse or just as ‘bad’. If Great Britain was allowed to roam all over the world taking over nations, treating the natives of those nation with great brutality, sell slaves, suck all resources from their empire why should it have been wrong for Germany to want its own empire? Also many leaders were worse than Hitler; Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot come to mind just off the top of my head. There was General Pinochet who modelled his nation on Nazi Germany and Margaret Thatcher gave him sanctuary in Great Britain.

To me, it has the strum, sound and beat of a late 50's early 60's U.S. protest song. Speaking of which, back in the 60's, Dean Rusk, the U.S. Secretary of State during the Vietnam War, complained that "hippies were just a bunch of [café]shirts" It took me a couple of decades to figure out what he was talking about. chirp, tweet, chirp, tweet, and fly away. :)

Many of the Stahlhelm had been part of the idealistic pre war youth movement, the Die deutsche Jugendbewegung and; and that included a wide spectrum of basically Romantic Wandervogel (wandering birds), hiking, folk singing, and health and nudity devotees. They enlisted enthusiastically, got slaughtered mercilessly at places like Langemarck and emerged hardened and militarized. So... actually... Rusk knew his history.
