This was recorded on 30th August 1999
at the Barrfields Theatre in Largs Scotland "Benny Gallagher & friends" featured Mary Hopkin, Christian Marsac, Jim Diamond and of course Benny Gallagher himself!
Here Mary sings a beautiful Welsh love song called "Bugeilio'r Gwenith Gwyn"
This 18th-century folk song describes the tragic love affair between Wil Hopcyn and Ann Thomas, the daughter of a wealthy farmer from Cefn ydfa, Llangynwyd, South Wales. Ann was betrothed through her parents, and sadly had to marry the man of their choice. She later died of a broken heart, since her first love was Wil, a farm hand.
Mi sydd fachgen ieuanc ffol.
Yn byw yn ol fy ffansi
Myfi'n bugeilior gwenith gwyn,
Ac arall yn ei fedi.
Pam na ddeui ar fy ol,
Ryw ddydd ar ol ei gilydd?
Gwaith 'rwyn dy weld, y feinir fach,
Yn lanach, lanach beunydd!
2. Glanach, lanach wyt bob dydd,
Neu fi a'm ffydd yn ffolach,
Er mwyn y Gwr a wnaeth dy wedd,
Gwna im drugaredd ballach.
Cwnn dy ben, gwel acw draw,
Rho i mi'th law wen dirion;
Gwaith yn dy fynwes bert ei thro
Mae allwedd clo fy nghalon!
3. Tra fo dwr y mor yn hallt,
A thra fo 'ngwallt yn tyfu
A thra fo calon yn fy mron
Mi fydda'n ffyddlon iti:
Dywed imi'r gwir dan gel
A rho dan sel d'atebion,
P'un ai myfi neu arall, Ann
Sydd orau gan dy galon.
A simple youthful lad am I
Who loves at fancy's pleasure:
I fondly watch the blooming wheat,
Another reaps the treasure.
Oh! Wherefore still despise my suit,
Why sighing keep thy lover?
For some new charm, thou matchless fair, I day by day discover.
2. Each day reveals some new-born grace,
Or does fond faith deceive me?
In love to Him who formed thy face,
With pity now receive me,
Then lift thine eyes, one look bestow.
Give me thy hand, my fairest,
For in thy bosom, lovely maid,
My heart's true key thou bearest
3. While hair adorns this aching brow
Still I will love sincerely,
While ocean rolls its briny flow
Still I will love thee dearly.
Then tell the truth, in secret tell,
And under seal discover,
If it be I or who is blest
As thy true heart's best lover.

I'm English but was taught this in primary school and I've never forgotten it.
My God. This woman has the most beautiful voice. The hair is walking up my arms here.
mary makes these old welsh folk songs sound so simple and pure, when in fact they can be quite difficult to sing. I very much appreciate her songs, and I am glad richpat posts them. Something about nature's beauty in these old songs, that she understands so well.
Mary it's not long enough do another 20 verses your voice is so beautiful I want to listen to you all night absolutely magical
My Mother used to sing this to me . Thank you so much for bringing back happy memories of Wales .
Really a beautiful language, of course Mary Hopkin is a blessed singer and this song sounds beautiful!
Thank you for uploading this. I am from Pontardawe, now living in London for over 15 years. I am so proud to have spent my childhood in a part of the world that was beatiful and safe. The welsh language was a big part of my life and remains so. I am very moved when I hear these traditional songs sung so beautifully.
Welsh emigrating from Cymru is sadly helping push the community language to extinction....brysiwch yn ôl
Her voice is lovely in Welsh.
I think it is the most beautiful song on UA-cam, reminds me of my mother who used to sing it to me , when very young .
Lovely song. I remember Mary from the late 60s and early 70's; great to hear she's still singing.
Thanks for including me on your playlist!
Golly. Can't stop listening to this. Transcendently beautiful. Thank you Mary.
Neither did I. It's a truly great historic story that should always be remembered. Especially as their graves are present and can be witnessed first hand.
the song and the story is about " the maid of cefn ydfa " old welsh song with a story of love and broken hearts, sung by most children in a welsh school but forgotten by the time their 12,
What a fantasic tune!
Such a beautiful recording of music from so long age. Wil Hopkin died in 1741 Amazing that it still survives xxxxx
You are an amazing singer and a beautiful girl!
The most sad and beautiful Welsh song !
This is an absolutely lovely rendition. Shadows most of the others I've heard so much, I can't even stand to hear them. I just keep playing this one over and over.
We sang this in school in Coedpoeth it's still one of my favourites. Diolch.
There were lots of families who spoke Welsh when I lived there, and there are good resources on the Internet for those who wish to learn to speak Welsh
Soul stirring!!
just beautiful
Simply beautiful...
Recently put together a mix of all of Mary's songs sung in Welsh that I could find. Truly wonderful to experience.
What could be better, except for a new Welsh language album by Mary? Please!
I visited the graves of Wil Hocyn and Ann Maddock today The song is a sad song. The story about watching the wheat

'I probably shouldn't argue with you. But if it ever came to a choice of weapons, I should choose grammar
Such ugly statements......My main conducting teacher was Welsh. The greatest day of my life was when I met him.
René Galván Thank you he's a very 'ugly person'
Perhaps they are from the English. I am trying not to dislike them, but they make it difficult sometimes.
