The alto's voice is like dark velvet. She gets overlooked very often because sopranos get all the glory, and I love it when you hear her voice shine like this.
She's amazing. Seriously good voice.
Intonating the ninth tone "against" the treble is a real challenge in such a masterpiece and she did it perfectly.
Sang alto in high school. Always at the back. Lol
She is absolutely stunning. I am frankly the smitten kitten when it comes to her alto voice 🙂
You can say that again. Listen for the contrast in the 2 altos and you will enjoy it all the more. Brilliant shades of blue

Auch ich bin Schwarzwälder und absolut fasziniert von dieser vokalen Qualität. Besser geht's nicht. Einfach nur traumhaft.
Jede einzelne Stimme ist eine Perle. Habe dieses wunderbare Werk im Chor gesungen und jedes Mal saßen ein bisschen die Tränen im Kopf, da es ja auch ein inniges Gebet am Lebensende darstellt.
Der Text ist aus dem Lukasevangelium (24,29) und der Chorsatz ein Jugendwerk Rheinbergers - aber man kann es vielleicht auch auf den "Lebensabend" beziehen ...

It is actually those people on the road to Emmaus who invite Jesus to join them in their home, and not continue walking. So Jesus joins them, and he breaks bread with them, and they then realise he is Jesus arisen from the dead. The scales fall from their eyes. So "bleib bei uns", stay with us, has two meanings: the literal one of asking a man - who turns out to be Jesus - to remain with them, an act of hospitality. And the profounder, much profounder one, of "stay with us, Jesus" - stay with mankind - for evening is approaching, "es will Abend werden". And yet the third meaning, though not that found in the Gospel acc. to Luke, "we love you, stay with us, do not die", is open to all and any, too. Tears in my eyes last night when I listened to this (again).
Immer wenn ich Voces8 höre, bedauere ich die Komponisten dafür, dass sie ihre Werke zu Lebzeiten nie in solcher Qualität gehört haben.
Sie täuschen sich. Damals wurde Vokalpolyphonie gelebt wie wir das niemals erfahren werden. Eä
Es möge schon der Fall sein, doch wie könnte man solches feststellen?

Gehört haben die Komponisten ihre Werke schon, und in noch bessere Qualität, wenn auch “nur” innerlich. Denn so und nicht anderswie erreicht Musik ihre absolute Perfektion.
Gesungenes, auch so excellent wie hier, kann nur eine Annäherung anbieten. Gehörtes bleibt immer eine Übersetzung. Oder sollen wir Beethoven bedauern?
Leider können nur die wenigsten von uns mehrstimmige Musik vom Blatt hören. Deshalb ist das Singen so wichtig, nicht um die Komponistinen zu gefallen, sondern uns Sterbliche zu erriechen versuchen.
Sorry, my German is not that good. I know I should have written “Noten lesen,” but music is more than just notes. I know “abhören” is inappropriate, but I feel the need for a construct parallel to “ablesen.”
Abschließend muss ich leider erkennen dass die Fortschritte unserer Zeit in Sachen Sprachkompetenz auf Kosten der Musikkompetenz und Gewandheut gegangen sind.

We sang this song in my high school choir almost ten years ago and I will never forget it. The most beautiful song I’ve ever heard or sang.

A dream! The piece is as great as difficult. I did it myself. Voces8 does it touching, heavenly, and the german pronounciation is perfect! Two years ago on my bike tour I came to Vaduz, Liechtenstein and found the momorial of Rheinberger, who was born in Vaduz. The rest of the day I was hearing this song in my ears. So great.

This choral work seems perfect for VOCES8, as I love the little solo segments, giving each beautiful voice a chance to shine, allowing the listener to hear what VOCES8 is made of. Together, as always, the blend is beyond perfection. Just stunning!

What makes this recording especially poignant is the fact that this is the swan song of a member leaving the choir with 7 others pleading “Stay with us” as a subtext.
Tears are flowing because of the beauty of tthis work nd its presentation.
The enhanced sense of focus on group and individual voices through camera angles and closeups is wonderful.
From the musical point of view this is perfect beauty, but what really strikes me most is its effect on my heart. It brings to surface an unbearable feeling of nostalgy and a hidden, unknown suffering . I literally have hard time listening to it. What a mysterious, powerful composition.

L'ayant chanté, je tiens à confirmer qu'il est vraiment magnifique ! À 8 voix, marqué par des frottements de notes tellement harmonieux, par des fugues (entrée des voix en décalé sur un même air (exemple : 1.55 min), chanté par des voix très agréables à écouter, ce chant est un chef-d'œuvre !!

I heard Voces8 and several other choirs sing this in the Stiftskirche Stuttgart at the end of a concert a few years ago. Magical!
@@AnjaHuebel1 near there, in Tübingen, once a year there is the "night of choirs". In the end, after five or six choirs singing, the whole church, of which a siginificant part consists of the choristers (as well as many of the auditorium) sings this song. Over 400 people who can sing very well. Magical.

I agree with Flo Schwerdtfeger! One of my favorite pieces of choir music. If our vocal ensemble grows up from four to six, this will be one of the first pieces, we will singing.
