I am 73 now and this makes me very nostalgic. Make no mistake, the world has changed very much, mostly for the worse I'm afraid. The relative innocence of that time has evaporated to make space for so many brash and ugly things.
So many girls looked like this back in the 60's, clean, slim, and no tattoos. Did I have crush on her.......yeah course I did. I'm 72 now and thank UTube for all these memories, and the brilliant people that upload them for me.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Agree she’s a beautiful girl but that’s genes for you. I’d hope you’d have thought her beautiful even if she were not slim. Talents what matters
No costumes, no nudity, no paint, no manipulations of any kind just a pure clear musical voice that is as gorgeous as the lady who plays the guitar and sings her songs! I fell in love with Mary a long time ago.
Only heard her sing before today 'Those were the days my friend', but I listened to a lot of her songs today, pretty songs, pretty and angelic voice, she was so beautiful too. Who wouldn't fall in love with her? Why they don't have talent like that today, I have no answer. With all the strife and craziness we have today, it's wonderful to go back in time and listen to beautiful songs and a voice like her's.
Mary Hopkin has a lovely voice, it doesn’t need props like bawdy clothes, special effects and flashing lights. Dancers flitting and wiggling about. Those kind of days have gone and so has our peace of mind, our innocence and joy of real things. Today everything seems fake, even our laughter.
Yes, I'm here again. Hang on, while I wipe the tears of regret off my keyboard. I thank the Lord for the 60's and the wonderful teenage years it gave me.
I loved Mary.....im 65....i loved this song....the end of Kidnapped....Michael Caine realising all was over....very moving....i showed Mary to my 29 year old son....hes in love🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was born in 1950, so these times were my time, such great times, great friends. My wife and I lost a friend two days ago, her sister, she was my age. Helen loved the music of those times, Mary Hopkin so beautifully sings those times for us to re-visit and remember. Life had become unbearable for Helen, she is now in a better place.
i love how some people can be so talented and they seem so normal and dont try too hard. They just act like themselves and that ends up being so wonderful.
The beautiful ways of this young lady's demeaner and persona!ity are virtually unknown among today's musicians and other entertainment personalities. We certainly have evolved, progresively downward into - sewer!
So much to say.I can only say,"Thank You Lord for all beauty.Thank You for the music.Thank you for all beautiful voices.Thank You for the musicians.Thank You for Marry Hopkin."I am so blessed for all these things
I have been searching for this song for a long time. I heard it many years ago at the end of a film (which I now know was "Kidnapped". It's a very beautiful song and Mary Hopkin has a beautiful voice. I don't think anyone else could have sung this song as well as she did. It's a great credit to her.
It was the last scene of the film Kidnapped....Michael Caine as Alan Breck Stuart realising the Stuart cause is lost....to this music he stares wistfully at the highlands hes lost then strides heroically into the Castle....to his death.....cue tears, tears and more tears....😭😭😱🤣🤣🤣
What IS wrong with Anne Robinson?? This Welsh beauty is a product of a noble and heroic race. The tones in Mary's voice are glistening and trickling down my cheeks. I'm of Irish stock but I know somehow that Mary's voice carries something of all our spirits and origins. She pitches the sounds of yesterday and today with the hopeful sounds of tomorrow. All that and still be an icon of the 60's. In other words, talent like Mary's is timeless. With the very best of wishes for her....
I'm 23 as of 2018, I randomly stumbled upon Mary Hopkin just recently. Her voice is so pure and beautiful. Why is she not more well known? Why are there so many singers and bands from this era that are just tossed aside?
Hi Anthony, she chose to stop performing but not recording, since 2005 she has been releasing her back catalogue and in a short time is releasing a new version of "Those were the days" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of it's release ... www.maryhopkin.com/ facebook.com/pg/maryhopkin/posts/?ref=page_internal

Wow! Mary sings this song so lovely! Her voice travels straight to the heart! It seems to float in such a magical way! She must have had a wonderful voice teacher too! I really love her guitar playing too. Really she sounds so great with just her guitar. Of course her studio players are all outstanding. Best of happiness to Mary and her family and friends. How i agree with Bear ! im 77 but do i remeber Mary ? yes i do ! what a beautiful voice . what a beautiful song , why dont girls sing like this anymore , instead of the ' nasal screeching' rubbish they inflict on us ! this is how you sing , from the heart . with perfect vowel sounds, perfect pitch ! oh. and i fell for her as well !
The tune is taken from a lovely old Scottish folk song called "The Water is Wide" popularised by Pete Seeger and sung by many others including The Seekers. It's mentioned that the song is by Jack Fishman and Roy Budd. I'm sure they did write the lyrics but the melody is identical to the hauntingly beautiful folk song "The Water is Wide" which was first written down and published by Cecil Sharp in 1906 well before Budd annd Fishman were born! Neil Young's "Mother Earth", "Van Diemen's Land" by U2 and "When the Pipers Play," by Isla St. Clair also use the melody.
A tremendously talented singer! I just love her songs and music from the Apple Records days and wish all of her recordings from that era including foreign language versions would be re-issued.
