Fields of St. Etienne sung by Mary Hopkin
Art from Vincent Van Gogh
lyrics:
Through the fields of St Etienne
Amidst the corn I wander
In my hand an ear of corn
The morning dew has kissed
Here beneath the skies
I lay with my lover
While the summer winds gave it clouds of war
Au revoir my love
Though the reasons pass me
Why we can't remain in the fields of St. Etienne
Weaving proudly, singing loudly
Being young and foolish
He was going never knowing
He would not return
Singing songs of war
Filled fith God and country
Marching down the road with the boys that day
Au revoir my love
Though the reasons pass me
Why we can't remain in the fields of St. Etienne
I've always loved this song. It made me a fan of the songwriters Gallagher and Lyle who I saw on an American tour back in the 70s because of this. Beautiful melody and lyric and of course a spectacular performance. Great low harmony on the chorus.
Lovely song from Mary. Her sweet voice singing about war and death against a background of Vincent Van Gogh's masterpieces makes it very poignant. Thanks for posting.
What a combination..... her lovely poignant voice.. Just right for tnis song.. And his ethereal paintings. Thank you
Que linda voz, sus melodías me recuerdan mi infancia. Gracias por hacernos recordar.
So beautiful, love this song. Also with Vincent Van Gogh photos as a backdrop. Stunning ❤❤
I agree, this is one of the videos of Mary's that I watch on a regular basis on utube! Lovely pictures and a lovely vocal
All the best
Pat
I am so glad to hear this song it's so hard to find. A master's touch using Vincents work to illustrate this piece!
Wow, what pure lovely tones. Amazing, like crystal. Beautiful, Mary was a jewel.
HERMOSA EXPOSICION ACOMPAÑADA DE UNA DELICIOSA CANCION, GRACIAS RUTH
Beautifull song thank you for bring it to us.
One of Mary's best songs.
Forgot to add before that the pairing of Vincent's paintings with Mary's voice is perfect!
Thanks.
She is the sweetest sweetheart of mine forever.
I saw her at Expo '70 live held in Osaka-Suita.
My seat was the center frontest.
Sincerely yours,
Kuramochi at Saitama Japan
una splendida canzone piena di malinconia. Video prezioso, grande cantante. Alleluia!
My 4 favorite Mary Hopkin songs are Fields of St. Etienne, Streets of London, Those were the Days, and Turn! Turn! Turn! Would love to see a video of her singing Streets of London.
Fabulous!
"Thank you for this. I had never heard this song before. The images are just perfect. Good stuff!
Maravillosa Mary. Una joya esta canción
この曲はメリーホプキン自身がいつになっても一番に気に入っている歌のひとつです。
彼女の美声、歌詞、素晴らしいアレンジがいつまでも残ります。
This song, Field of St. Etienne, is really one of the best loved song by Mary herself.
Bearutiful, clear voice of Mary's and fine lyric with great arrangement always long remain in my heart.
Translation of halukigenia's comment:
I've become a fan of Mary, for I heard this song on the B-side when I bought the single Que Sara Sera, a hit by Apple.
Sorry to misunderstanding occurred.
I heard this or perhaps another singer on this same song during my youth in the 80's. I never understood what this song was all about, what war it was referring to, but I love listening to this song again and again.
this song gives me goose bumps and makes me teary-eyed at the same time.
Van Coch has grown on me over the years, he loved yellow as you can see, and Mary Hopkins sounds her best here, great video.
In my country, in late 2005, Toshiba-EMI released Mary's three albums of the Apple days; Post Card, Earth Song / Ocean Song and Mary's compilation Those Were The Days in paper-sleeve special issue. They are still available at certain discstores near here. I recommend them because the photos imitating the original is very beautiful and the inlays include lyrics cards in English (information are written in Japanese only).
Tommy a fan in Japan
this has always been my favorite mary hopkin song. and i have all her 45's and lps
Yo tuve una vez un simple: good bye de un lado, y este hermoso tema del otro. Su voz es tan naturalmente bella...

Tommy
Incrível montagem, madavilhoso
Obrigado
thanks for the kudos! the song has made a great influence on me when i was younger.
Whole generation of youth marched away to the total annihilation and masacre of world War 1 and this song is about that war. But people forgot about this and started another war, WW2 and this is the song of antiwar, foolishness of youth and meaningless of love.
Thank you for posting. I think this was on the flip side of Que Sera Sera, I do remember I had this as a kid. It was on the white side of the Apple record label. A very nice song. Thanks again.
Thank you , Pat!
Beautiful all the way around
Really lovely thanks for posting
A wonderful "Gallagher and Lyle" song, really beautiful, it's available on the CD "Mary Hopkin" "Those Were the days" via amazon etc...
oh thanks for the context of the song!
it's nice to know a bit of history
I agree 100%,
She liked this one actually, here is a quote from her
"Fields Of St. Etienne, That's one of my all time favorites. Beautiful song. The first time it was released on an album, it was a different arrangement. It might've been the chap who did Those Were The Days, Richard something. Paul produced the other version, which was a bit over the top. And having been told that they were re--releasing it, I begged them to find the version I did with Benny and Graham. Which I think this is."
this song is one of my favorite songs that i know.thank you!
mako maruyama
@richpat that sounds delightful! thank you for the good news
the sound quality is not great; fortunately, I have the record. Even Apple Records does not have this version.
Wow!!!
Great!!!!!
Tommy from Japan
@richpat i listened to it today; i definitely need to listen to it many times to get used to it!
I much prefer this version to the other one with all the drums and instruments
ホントですよね!
何度聴いてもいい歌ですよね!
デュエットの相手は高音域の感じから多分ポールマッカートニーでは、と思っています。
Oh yes yes yes!
How many times I have listened to this song since my teens...I can just say "How nice a song this is!"
The duet may be I think with Paul McCartney according to the sweetness of his singing in the high tone...
yes, yes, YES!
;D
Totally unfamiliar with this song and this rendition until a month ago, and it has become one of my favorite MH songs. It's beautiful! Different from the Postcard album track this version shines with minimal accompaniment - where can I find this version - album or CD?
on vinyl b side to Que sera sera, earlier releases of Those were the days CD (best of) has this version on it.
51pogo The Post Card version was a bonus track. Call it a "first try" that ultimately was scrapped - with good reason. This is the "official" version, alas, just a B-side.
@@AppleCorp3 Thanks!
Find Tower Records or HMV, Japan's site.
I have bought Mary's "Post Cards", Toshiba-EMI normal CD, Toshiba-EMI paper sleeve version and imported ones from EU (Italy made) and US (Capitol) made ones, then total 4 CDs have I bought in this four months. "Those were the days CDs" are also available here in the larger CD stores. I recommend paper sleeve special issue, whose photos are very beautiful and the inlay informations are very new.
Tommy
A fan in the Far East.

very nice
da simaritalia
@krisfaun The right channel distortion noise starts at 00:30 (30 seconds after the very beginning)
@krisfaun Hi, yes I know what you mean, nothing can beat the one we all know and love ...
She is still recording go to her official site
maryhopkindotcom
All the best
Pat
@philmccrea1 Actually its Graham Lyle singing with her, he of Gallagher and Lyle the composers
Too bad they don't play this kind of thing at the healthclub.
Just had a listen to a few Tori Amos songs here on UA-cam... I think her studio voice more than her live vocals ... But yes there is something there, I like her I am going to go and listen some more... Thanks for pointer...
mjustfoolin
It's not Mcartney on this - the song was written by Gallagher and Lyle and the voice in the background is Graham Lyle
Sorry!! @krisfaun, i mis-touched on my new cellphone screen. I love and really thums UP on this one. Pardon. Now having 3 more "marching" verdions on EMI, EMI Music Japan formally Toshiba-EMI & from Capitol, USA special titled 10 Green Apples. all the best & regards, Tomoya
mm yes i saw it available at amazon, but it's over 25 bucks plus there's the shipping and handling. i guess it's because it's old and imported.
And i only wanted this track. i guess i'll have to wait a bit longer for itunes to get rights to sell it.
Thanks for the gallagher and lyle information.
「アップルレコード」で ケセラ・セラ がヒットして、シングルを購入しました。
でも、B面の Fields of St. Etienne がとても良く、この歌がなかったら、Mary Hopkin は私の中から消えていたかも・・・
good 5*
krisfaun
have you heard "Fields of St. Etienne" on the new APPLE remastered re-releases out yesterday, it is a completely different version, it's absolutely wonderful. Mary also has a brand new CD out "You look familiar" on MHM via
maryhopkinDOTcom
Anybody else getting distortion in the right channel on this one?
@caesarcerf i would pay for this song if they ever put it in a music store.
@wqpeb is there something wrong with the video or youtube?
@krisfaun It's only THIS particular video that I was getting the bad sound on. Others are fine. Maybe this one will clear up in time too.
Is there a who plays on what track available? Sounds like Donovan?
May I join this discussion?
No! Additional quistion have I.
In my country Japan (in France and US, too), Que sera, sera and this song, Field of St. Etienne are released in a same record in around 1970. I know that in Que sera, sera Paul joined playing base and guitar, as is Ringo for drums (according to the CD "those were the days (1995 Toshiba-EMI, conpiled by Mary)" inlay explanation in japanese).
Are these two songs were recorded at a same place and at a same time?
I've always wondered who the guy is that sings the lower harmony on the final chorus (beginning at 2:32)
i don't think it's a coincidence! life's pretty funny sometimes.
Not hard to find It on the album postcard. yes it is distortion yes.
this is just soooo good, taylor swift must have got some thing from this? is she the new mary hopkin lol
i wonder since youtube started muting music vids without rights, this vid will be muted.
Hi: I grew up in Ukraine and
heard this song only
once on the radio. Since then I have loved it,
but haven't listened to it and
had no idea what it was until this morning.
Do you know the story behind the song?
Why did the (Gallagher/Lyle) write it?
why France? why St Etienne?
Thanks!
I like this version far better. I would I were heard as sn audience...
naketekuru
Pretty sure it's Benny Gallagher?, though not a hundred per cent certain!
Tommy kuramochi: out of interest, how old are you?
Ah, I see what you mean! sorry...
I actually quite like "Que sera sera", I thought the arrangement of it was lovely, but "Fields of ...." is a typical Mary song and suited her better,
@krisfaun thank you for this video. I bought the CD that contains this song about a year and a half ago from Amazon. The CD is entitled Mary Hopkin Those Were the Days. Apple 7243 8 30197 2 4. I don't know if those numbers mean anything or not.
hope this was helpful.
Wonder which of those Van Goghs belonged to Snoopy (before his doghouse burned down)?
