I’m sorry, but this feels like a video video that would be relevant 10 years ago, rebels has been out forever. And the thin light sabers are stylistic choice by Ralph Macquarie, and George Lucas. The way obi wan switched stances to bait the same move maul used to defeat qui gon is just genius.
This is one of the best, if not THE best scenes in rebels, and a lot of the fan base agrees.

Imagine not being able to grasp the concept of the Ralph McQuarrie design.
The moment Maul realizes that Obi Wan is not a hermit in a god forsaken desert, but a full on Jedi Master… It’s priceless.
You know Obi-Wan played Qui-Gon’s death over and over his head, figuring out what his master could’ve done differently and survived. Finally had his chance to put that to the test- like poetry, it rhymes!
He relived that duel constantly from all three perspectives. Part of that was learning how Maul could have won and learning a forbidden Sith technique he later used to defeat Anakin.

the transitions between the duel between maul and qui gon to the duel on tatooine is so fricking good, the way obi wan saw how qui gon died so he switched his saber formation, good lord, the timing of the duel of the fates in the background. Bravo Bravo 👏👏👏

See this is the part where Kenobi should’ve said “no I’m not protecting anything. I’m just here in exile due to the state of worldly affairs. Vader hates sand so he will never come here” then proceed to train Maul in the Jedi arts to take down palpatine

Maul harbored too much hate for Kenobi to have joined him regardless. Though had this been the case, the rebellion never would have won against the Empire. Palpy walked Maul already and unless Maul was to become fully redeemed and committed to the light they way Luke was, Palps would've just gotten into Mauls head. Then Kenobi and Maul would've fought in front of Palps and while I would forsee Maul losing, Palpy would've definitely helped Maul succeed as Palps would've handled Maul easier than Kenobi. Then no one would be left to train Luke and set him on the path towards Yoda.
@@ethanbrown2019 Obiwan is the negotiator for a reason. Bad writing. He definitely could’ve convinced Maul that it was in their best interest to take down Palpatine together. Makes no sense why he didn’t. The only person Maul hates just as much or more than Kenobi is palpatine

Like they are both old guys, experienced the worst of everything, had moments of glory and both know that either way, this it it. Right here right now. It truly is a duel of fates whenever they fight.

It's interesting, that last exchange. Maul is asking about the mysterious "someone", and Obi-Wan us talking about Luke. However, they are speaking on Anakin's home world, and Anakin is the one who fits what was spoken. I like that.
Luke also lived his whole life there.

The edit is cool in it's own right, but it clashes with what the tone of the scene was. It's not supposed to be an epic duel, it's a lost soul seeking retribution, and a exiled warrior not only protecting the chosen one, but as obi wan says in the show, he's finally putting down an old enemy for good
It's just taking all the subtlety and subtext out of it. All of it is in the scene to begin with if you're paying attention, not sure what the point of showing it is. And Duel of the Fates is too much for it.
It’s not the fact that the clips were used, it’s *what* clips were used.. Choices certainly could’ve been better.

That’s one thing I hated about this series. Why are the light savers so bloody thin….. the only ones it works for are the inquisitors…. But even then it’s stupid. It’s like they’ve had the soul sucked out of them
To pay homage to the early concept arts of the guy who drawn Star Wars as a whole.
It’s a style choice to pay homage to the Ralph McQuarrie concept art for the original Star Wars. The animated shows always take huge liberties with presenting things or people in stylized ways. Look at Dooku in The Clone Wars. It’s not a bad thing, just an artistic choice.

I love how in the end, upon defeat, Maul can tell both him and Obi-Wan have been pawns in an unwinnable, lifelong battle which took so much from the both of them. It's like a mutual understanding of how much they've both been through. All Maul wishes for at this point is for the chosen one to avenge them.
The THICC sabers are just correct, the tiny lines don’t do justice to this iconic weapon. Also the flashbacks are so well integrated and so smartly cut. Very well done

What a beautiful edit, spot on. All the refernces to what Obi-Wan might have been thinking. Obi Wan luring Maul into thinking he can kill him with the same move as he did Qui-Gon, even the choice of music was masterful. Maul's Death always kinda put a tear in my eyes. Since I've known his background and story I see him as a tragic antagonist, merely used, manipulated and discarded by Sidious. In the end, Maul had nothing but his anger. Sidious took his innocence and childhood, Obi-Wan took his opportunity to become a full sith lord (and his legs), then Sidious (again) took his brother and his last hope of "reedeming" himself in the eyes of his master, and finally Ahsoka took his legacy. Ironically, the person he makes responsible for all of this, Obi-Wan, is the one to give him peace.

If anyone wants to know, the reason, the clone wars and the Star Wars rebels blades are very thin is because apparently in the design team they wanted to show that this isn’t a big bulky bat and it is a blade so it’s actually just the thin side of the light saber apparently that is also why it is shown to have a very pointy tip at the top of the light saber

Everyone complains about the thin lightsabers and yet it was done that way as an homage to McQuarrie’s concept arts.
Did you know the original script written by George Lucas for a new hope was never used. The entire cast and production crew told him how bad it was and helped him rewrite the entire movie. Sometimes change is good and the thick sabers were a good change.

Great effects work! Flashback-wise, you may also want to put a shot of Maul killing Obi-Wan's love, Satine, in The Clone Wars, as that probably still wrangled in his mind every bit as much as Qui-Gon's death.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
The fact that maul recognized the move, but could not see it was bait and went for it anyway is very neat. The sith predator could not miss that oportunity, and the hubris that comes along with it made him not think straight.

This is the cannon version as far as I'm concerned. Nice of them to share a Force Vision before meeting on the other side. Strange Disney started hinting very strongly that all Jedi and Sith carry a Lightsaber and a Light-foil.

Oddly enough despite strongly hating the thin saber style of rebels, I loved them in this one single fight, even preferred them for this fight over the normal saber look. For some reason it just felt so much more fatal and blade-like. But this video is great.

Obi-Wan remembering his old stance. He used his old style (Form IV/Ataru) to bait Maul to use his erratic style (Form VII/Juyo), then counter it with his signature move (Form III/Soresu). But the blow is for his master to give honor to Qui-Gon's teachings.

Idk why were they so slim, but I kinda like them that way, slim version looks like a needle, and makes it seem a lot more precise than normal lightsaber.

The final battle between Obiwan Kenobi and Darth Maul the last dual I can see the memories of the two with thick lightsabers
When maul asked if he was the chosen one, i thought he was talking about darth vader being anakin, the chosen, and how he'd avenge the ones who fell in the dark side.

I prefer the original music that was used in the episode, but the Lightsabers really look like what they should be here. The flashbacks were also used pretty well, great job
I just realized that there's a huge problem with this scene: the way that Maul is positioned and Ben strikes him, the only way Ben's saber would cut Maul's and hit him too would be by slashing through his body in vertical, so his torso would actually be in two halves after it
It's still a kids show, other than the sabre beam too thin whining this is one of star wars best duels, so much history referenced, showing obiwan being the true wise and badass Jedi master that he is, Rebels did this perfectly.
Now only thing wrong with the scene is calling Luke the chosen one

This was amazing. I love how you added Duel of the Fates as soon as Maul said Obi-Wan was protecting someONE, and he in turn ignited his lightsaber. Then the flashbacks to their duel on Naboo and when they're changing stances and strategizing their attack was *chef's kiss*
Edit: oh, and the thick lightsabers were the icing on the cake. Made it so much better ^^

Ohh i felt that. The amount of emotions that must’ve played in Maul’s mind as Obi Wan just sliced him and he thinks back to being cut in half. That amount of emotions at once must’ve been what killed him really. His expression said it all.

The flashbacks destroy the intensity of the scene
So emotional. Kenobi knows maul is just a pained soul. A slave to the darkside, just as much a victim as those he spent tormenting. And in the end, Kenobi forgives him.
