Star Wars Rebels with Thick Lightsabers | Obi-Wan vs Maul

- This video is Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul's fight from Star Wars Rebels, but their lightsabers are thicker so they look like the lightsabers from the main movies/Clone Wars.
This took me a while to make, so I hope you enjoy it :)
Also, all the ad money will be going to Lucasfilm because they have the rights to the scene.

SEND THE CLONES TO THE LIKE SYSTEM. ITS A SYSTEM WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE
It's critical we send an attack group immediately
Maul's face when Obi-Wan switches his stance to Qui-Qon's is incredible.
It's amazing how much they conveyed with that simple stance change. Maul thought Obi-Wan was being driven by revenge in that form change. You know, that Obi-Wan wanted to take full revenge by defeating Maul using his master's form. But it was a trap. That line of thought was EXACTLY what Obi-Wan was counting on, and Maul took the bait, line and sinker. The fight was over before it even began.
XanderVJ Agreed - he’s always on the high ground :)
Obi-Wan proved he was the better duelist with that form change.
Qui-Gon used Ataru on Naboo and was beaten by Maul.
Obi-wan beat Maul with Soresu, and a bit of revenge anger.
Maul rematches Obi-Wan.
Obi-Wan starts with Soresu and then switches to Ataru.
Obi-Wan beats Maul _again_ showing that it doesn’t matter which form he uses, he is the superior duelist.
@@realburglazofficial2613 he was merely mirroring the Ataru stand in order to bait Maul, his defense and counterattack are Soresu.
It was a trap for Maul
@@realburglazofficial2613 Obi-Wan is using Ataru against Maul in The Phantom Menace. He doesn't start using Soresu as his main form until later.
Sucks that this show’s best moments arent even with the main characters.
ShadowSamuel I think I prefer it short, shows the difference between Obi-Wan and Ben. The focus is more on the lines and body language.
@ShadowSamuel, Obi-Wan at this point has spent decades perfecting the style of lightsaber fighting that could best defeat Maul in Episode I, out of his grief for the loss of Qui-Gon. Maul, a Sith Lord and masterful at manipulating emotion, decides to open with the combo that killed Qui-Gon, most likely to throw Obi-Wan off balance emotionally. Obi-Wan has spent a lifetime studying for a test with one obvious question. This isn't a short fight. This is the climax of a thirty-year emotional war.
The whole show was pretty meh, A lackluster beginning, filler episodes then a cool finale rinse and repeat for the rest of the show. The animation didn't have the same quality and the action didn't have the same grit. Clone Wars is so much better
@ShadowSamuel It's because Ben has learned.
I honestly don’t mind that this show is with different characters. This series focuses on how the Rebel Alliance was created, so it makes sense that the original trilogy characters only appear in some episodes and less lightsaber fights. Star Wars is not only about
lightsabers fights, you know, some people are forgetting that this is the era where the Original Trilogy happens and all the Jedi and the order were all extinct.
A surprise to be sure but a welcome one

The fact that Obi Wan catches him and closes his eyes is so emotional and deep
@pinpoint45 But Obi Wan didnt fight against Maul in Ep1 on Tatooine
@@RemusGT In the movie, Episode One: The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan DID fight Darth Maul alongside Qui-Gon Jinn, and ended up winning the fight after his master lost (unless you meant Ep1 of the series, then you're right). But as for pinpoint45's comment, it is incorrect. Obi-Wan's first ever fight with Darth Maul was on Naboo. Only Qui-Gon briefly fought with Maul on Tatooine as they were leaving. :)
@@andrewmiazga3922 yeah, I obviously meant on Tatooine... we all know that he cut Maul in half on Naboo
In the clone wars, Obi-wan figured Maul out: Maul was forced to be a Sith but after his failure(against Kenobi) he was abandoned and forgotten. The only thing that was keeping Maul going was his obsession to beat Obi-wan, since Sidious abandoned him.
@@taraungoogle8482 Correct

I have a *TON* of questions when it comes to rebels animation. Lightsabers obviously but also, why in the world did anakin and yoda look so much different? With Ahsoka, at least her looking different was because she got older (I think they should’ve tried to base it off of the clone wars animation from when she saw her future self though) but why did anakin look nothing like anakin and yoda like he was on some drugs? Sorry it just bothers me and this felt like a good time to bring it up lol.
Yoda I feel they wanted to give him the whimsical gremlin look of the OT. As for Anakin, I think they just goofed and his design didn't translate as well as other characters to the Rebels art style. Imo the main issue is with the eyes/browline of the model - Hayden has a pretty angled browline close above his eyes which give him a more intense look, and Rebels Anakin's face just looks too light/blandly happy to be Hayden's. I wonder if the cracked Vader mask Anakin was a completely different model bc I felt that looked much better, even though we only saw part of the face.
Yoda had too much ketamin
Different art styles
Though yes i still like both shows clone wars definitely had a better style
It’s supposed to look like the Original Ralph Mcquarrie designs from what I know. A lot more of a polished look, and opposed to the slightly gritty appearances in the Clone Wars. Some characters look good if not different, others downright horrifying, depends on taste I guess:)
Yoda is on ketamine which is kinda a drug
The thing I love about this scene, is that Maul isn’t just talking about himself, and Obi Wan. He’s talking about everyone. All the Jedi, and everyone whom was ever destroyed by Sidious. And also, that in the end..Kenobi still gave comfort to someone whom was a mortal enemy. And I also love Maul’s character arc. Through his entire life all he knew was torture, and hatred. That’s all he had left. But he still had hope, that he would be avenged in the end.
The Jedi, the Clones, Anakin/Vader, Dooku, Grievous, and many more
I love how Maul took the same stance as he took before killing Qui-Gon Jinn, and Obi-Wan noticed that and changed to his old master's stance. 1:11
He even tried to end the fight thre same way (strike to the face with hilt and stab)
A perfect final touch to an already perfect scene. I love how Obi Wan showed respect and felt sympathy towards Maul despite the fact Maul had taken so much from him, and knew that despite how different they were, he could’ve never related to anyone more strongly. Even though Maul killed his master and his love, Obi Wan knew Sidious was behind all the pain and loss he had gone through, and knew that Sidious ruined Maul’s life too by brutally forming him essentially into a bloodthirsty sith monster to do his bidding. It was a beautiful way to end Maul’s story and the fact the lightsaber’s don’t look paper thin anymore is a bonus.
Just like Vader it's a case where the evil deeds are not excused but at least they are understandable.
More like blood thirsty animal, but monster works too.
The way of the Jedi resentment is not. As time passed, in Tattooine, under the guidance of Qui-Gon's ghost, Obi-Wan became more proficient in the ways of the Jedi; perhaps not in a martial way, but in the principles of the religion.
no i don’t think it’s from what’s above but more like the encounters over time formed a “relationship” of some kind where both respected each other and were “friends” but never hesitated to fight on sight
What’s thinner paper or Rebels lightsabers?

There is so much that goes into this duel for how amazing yet short it is.
Obi-Wan knows Maul very well. He knows how to play on his arrogance. Not only that, but he also never forgot how Master Qui-Gon fell.
It all shows when Obi-Wan shifts out of his revenge of the sith opening Soresu stance. This was likely his more comfortable opening stance (yes I know we dont see it in ANH). However, he settles on an Ataru stance, a form he has not practiced since Phantom Menace. However, more specifically, he adapts Qui-Gon Jinn's opening stance. Even though this is not his style of Saber combat, Maul has no way of really knowing that. Yes, they fought in the Clone Wars, but they haven't been together much and it has been years. It is reasonable to assume that Kenobi may have adopted the form of his fallen master. Maul even shifts his feet to adjust his attack when he sees Obi-Wan strike this all-too-familiar opening stance. Obi-Wan Kenobi set Maul up, knowing he would go for the same move he used against Qui-Gon. In other words, Obi-Wan had won before their blades even clashed.
The master of Form III, ladies and gentlemen!
Obi-Wan's also a master of Ataru, not on the level of Yoda but more on the level of his own master. At this point in the timeline though, he might be able to still use it but it would be taxing on him because of his age.
@@thelevisullivan very true. Obi-Wan had mastered Ataru and Seresu, though Master Windu called him not a master of Seresu, but THE Master of Seresu
To me it shows that Obi-Wan was always the superior duelist.
Qui-Gon was a master of Ataru and Obi-Wan is a Master of Soresu.
Maul beat Qui-Gon’s Ataru form on Naboo but was beat by Obi-Wan’s Soresu form.
On Tatooine, Obi-Wan starts the duel with the Soresu opening stance but switches to Ataru.
Maul recognises Qui-Gon’s lightsaber form.
Obi-Wan beats Maul in less than 5 strikes with Ataru.
Obi-Wan was _always_ the better duelist.
@@realburglazofficial2613 Obi-Wan used the Ataru opening stance to lure Maul in. His actual moves were Soresu.
1:28 "You must realize that you are doomed"

Pd: all right people, we need 10K, let's go for that Ahsoka vs Vader video!
Abridging Yoda’s Sith Mantra “...anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering.” Maul had the chips stacked against him pretty much his whole life, but he always fought to survive and grow powerful. It’s no wonder fans always love to see more of him, but at the same time they shouldn’t overuse him to the point where his character loses meaning.
Always angry and rage filled, the dark side was all Maul knew. He was forced into the ways of the dark side by Palpatine, used as a pawn and discarded when Palpatine didn't find him useful anymore.
He was given a second chance at life and what does he do with it? Wastes it on revenge!
I’m pretty sure he found peace at the end
Because he was actually very calm when he was dying
You can see he was at peace with his death

General Grievous I loved the show don’t get me wrong, I’m just saying that it would have been better.
TheGuy WhoPlaysChess Personally I think it would have made it more visually pleasing. Watching six seasons of Clone Wars got me used to seeing thicc sabers. Would have been great to see the continuity of them.
Doesn’t impact the story quality, just the visual quality. Overall the visuals had its ups and downs. Looked more realistic in certain places compared to clone wars (Obi Wan’s beard 💀) but yeah, idk about the sabers.
As much as how weird they look in the show I definitely appreciate that Dave Filoni and the creative team put in a lot of effort to bring Ralph McQuarrie's concepts and ANH-style details to life for the series. That in my opinion, makes it beautiful. Not close to being good as the Clone Wars but still good in its own way.

If the Kenobi series is half as good as this 3 minute scene, then I'll be content.
I also love the fat lightsabers, excellent edit!
This is one of my favorite animated Star Wars battles not just because it’s a battle between Obi wan and maul, an rivalry that’s has lasted for years, but because of the small details of the battle. You can see that once Ben Kenobi ignites his lightsaber he goes to his usual fighting stance or form 3 but then switches to form 4 which was Qui Gon’s lightsaber form and was the form he used against Maul. You can see that Maul notices the change in Kenobi’s form and changes his attack style to the one he used against Qui Gon. The reason Qui Gon had failed was because he had gone to block for mauls left blade was hit in the face by Mauls hilt stunning him and inevitably leading to his downfall but Obi wan having learned from his masters mistake knew to slice through the hilt instead of blocking Mauls blade.
The music as well has a great effect to this battle. It starts out dramatically and finishes with a sadder and calmer tone as soon as maul slice through the blade. The Dark side and maul had taken everything from kenobi. They had taken his master, his love, and Anakin who he saw as his brother but in the end he held a dying Maul in his arms. Maul in his final breaths says “Is he the chosen one?” (Referring to Luke) with Obi wan replying with yes. Mauls final words were “He will avenge us”. That one line refers to Luke avenging both of them by finally defeating Palpatine who had taken Savage from Maul and Anakin from Obi wan.
Obi wan does one last good thing to his old enemy by closing his eyes and finally letting his tormented rival rest.
I think the chosen one is Anakin
FLAME403404 well yeah he is

It sure is
@EndlessAbyss I think you did a really good job and the lightsabers here look really realistic, but part of me sorta agrees w this comment
Agreed, in the closeups they are perfect, but in the wide shots a little too much
I can see what you mean, I’ll take this into account for Ahoska v Vader 👌
Extra thicc exist for a reason smh r/whoosh
The path Maul chose time and time again consistently led him to pain. I see Kenobi defeating him, especially so quickly that he barely felt pain, as a mercy more than anything. Kenobi had no vengeful feelings. He was merely ending Maul’s self-torture. It mirrors the turning of Vader to the light in that way.

Whoever they found for Obi-wan sounds amazingly like Alec Guinness, and his words were very much in character.
Obi was tired of this maul sh*t that's why the fight is so short
That and he also knew he couldn't drag the fight long or he would get tired. The fight is short but it's also complex. When Maul tick him off he goes into young Kenobi stance. Then he calm down and switch to his old Kenobi stance. Then he try to trick Maul off by adopting QuiGon's stance. Maul falls right for it and tries the same move he used to kill QuiGon by hitting him in the face before stabbing. Obiwan saw it coming and goes right through the hilt. People who made this scene knew Star Wars unlike the crap we see in The Last Jedi.
@@chamoo232 Wow, that's a lot of layers.
The fight was short because Maul was exhausted and had run out of food and water and the heat got to him. Also he was rusty because of spending years hiding from the empire and fighting and killing the inquisitors while Kenobi spent all these years for training and meditating and Also Kenobi tricked Maul into using the same move he did to kill his master Qui-Gon and counterd him.Maul also underestimated Kenobi and thought Kenobi was nothing more than a rat in the desert. So it makes sense why Kenobi was able to end the fight quickly.

Why were the lightsabers thin in the first place?
I believe the people making the show wanted it to look like concept art for lightsabers from the originals, at least that's what I heard
Because they tried to go retro, and use old designs where the blades were skinny
It's just rebels artwork
@Sean The Mechanic you have done well fixing my empires naval force there new tie fighters will hopefully do them well Sean The Mechanic.
It’s just the design of the show. The show was naturally more “thin” than Clone Wars, if that makes sense 😂 I still loved Rebels, it was just a different style of animation and everything/everyone feels thinner.

I like this it’s really cool that you did made this video but at the same time I feel like the lightsabers are to round at the tip lightsabers are supposed to be more pointy.
Rebels took reference from some of Ralph McQuarrie's first concept art, Thin sabers, Seb and Chopper, also why Vader's helmet shape was more stylized in the series. But we do like that thiccness
This is honestly all I would need to watch the show. This looks so much better, thanks for this
For all the "flaws" rebels had, looking back on it after watching the Clone Wars Final season, it wasn't as bad as people made it out to be. The first season is a bit slow, but having the Inqusitors show up, having Agent Kalus change in a positive way, and showing the growth of the rebellion were are interesting things. It doesn't compare to Clone Wars, but for what it was, it wasn't that bad of a show.
And come on...this fight scene itself is amazing. Everything with Ashoka, with Maul, with Vader, with the Inquisitors, with the temple, that was all pretty good! The final season, with more of a focus on the force, Lothal, and the force nexus (I think thats what it was called). That was solid stuff.
But none of it can beat the best character in the show
THRAWN.
Although not as amazing as the books, this Thrawn had a great voice actor, outsmarted the rebels, and was only beaten when the force itself, through Ezra, took action. Seeing him pull a victory even when the rebellion thought they had won was impressive. Thrawn's voice, his mannerisms, and just the way he was in the show as great! And it brought him back, and despite the ending, is actually confirmed to still be alive!
let me remind you of the dreaded helicopter inquistors
we never speak of them for they are idiotic.
I mean. It does just straight up look better like this right? I'm confused as to who thought the thin lightsabers were needed.
It was all to pay homage to the original artwork for Star Wars. I don't think it was needed.
I like thinner lightsabers, looks way more elegant, like, made for precise attacks instead of blunt attacks.
@@chamoo232 _Duh._ I'm such a dope. I have been asking myself the very same question *Ecthelon* asked for years. With all of the other wonderful design elements they pulled from *Ralph McQuarrie's* work, I can't believe this didn't cross my mind until you pointed it out.🤦🏼♂️
It’s ironic that the loss of your greatest enemy can make you feel so sad
God, I'm glad this video exist. It brings joy to my eye, mind & heart. The scene even looks better!
