There are SO many ways to build flight time, and each has pros and cons. I worked, shadowed, and researched each to make your track just a little easier... What else do you want to learn? Leave me a comment!
Hi, I wanted to ask you about color blindness. I took the plate test at my eye doctor just to see if I could pass. I got 12 out of 15 wrong. I know the Operational Field Test is an option, but if I fail I can't retake it. Do you know another alternative route I could take?
When I was building flight time, I used an electronic logbook called LogTen Pro to keep track of all my flights. I partnered with Coradine Aviation to get you guys a free trial: coradine.com/swayne/
Also, if you haven't already try out LogTen Pro for free. I worked with them to get you guys a special promo. I used the logbook from when I was a student pilot, so I highly recommend it, man! coradine.com/swayne/
Interestingly - I posed the question to my PPL CFI as to the route he would have preferred to gain his hours. He was honest with me and stated teaching was not his preferred method. But everyone is different and if you like to teach then going through the CFI route may be great for you. As for myself, I'm a "mission" driven type of individual, so for me it might be a commercial pilot job until I reach that number.
After leaving the Navy, I was a "freight dog" for a little over a year. I built a LOT of night and IMC flying time. Ran all over the midwest, in all conditions and because I had no cattle to haul...could be a little more liberal with the control inputs and power settings!lol! Basically "free" time. After that I did ferry flights and really enjoyed that as well. Moved to GD/Gulfstream and flew biz as well before moving to big iron. Now I'm retired and if I were to go do it all over again, would have done it again in a heartbeat.
Namrud Fessehaye you don’t have to start at 17. You have to be 17 before you can get your PPL, which usually takes around 40-50 hrs. Also, it completely depends on how you go about your flight training. Joining a club is probably the cheapest option to get started.
I remember watching this as a new cfi, a year later I’m over 1300 hours and now assistant chief pilot. Time flies, experience grows. All from flight instructing, I highly recommended instructing. Definitely makes you a better pilot. You’re the man, swayne!
Wassup bro! Im 18 and I dropped out of school in 9th grade (yes I regret it) im working on getting my ged where do you think I should go from there? Any advice?
Your production skills are INSANE. love it. I tour in the concert industry and fly your airline through chicago weekly. Always look to see if you'll be on my plane!
I dont know guys, at my flight school, we are barely having any activity. Former CFI's working for big jet companies are coming back so they can have some sort of income. It's bad, I hope I'm wrong, but so far the only pilots that I know that have a job are Cargo and private part 91. I'm grateful that I still have a job as a CFI, but things are not good and I doubt the recovering process will fast. I was a pilot on 2006 and the crisis came, this resembles a lot. It will recover, and It will be quicker. Just make a good analysis before you take the jump, its a lot of money and that will only take you to around 250 hours, from then, like Martin said, its another 1200 ish you gotta put on your belt JUST for you to enter on the race.
I think right now it could still go both ways where there’s hope it won’t be that bad. But if the airlines really start to furlough early fall then I would forget about commercial flying for a while. If there’s furloughs it’s automatic few years of waiting for movement in the industry. I guess if I was starting right now I would just get the private and maybe share a plane and just wait it out until there really is hope before spending all that money for the ratings only to not be flying. I wasn’t a cfi so not sure how much time they get in a recession, I’m assuming not much.
The interesting thing about this economic crash is that it didn't happen as part of the natural economic cycle, so there's a good chance it could bounce back since this was an unnatural shock. On the other hand a recession or downturn was forecasted for some time in 2020 as far back as five years ago, so the two things sort of got mashed together. AND if there's a 2nd and 3rd wave, which is extremely likely based on how people in this country are reacting, we could be in for some serious serious trouble.
I am SO TIRED of flight school student VLOGs trying to get tell people how to break into the industry. Like, you're trying to monetize your own journey into a career field you know nothing about!!! Thank you Mr. Martin for actually being beyond the threshold before giving advice. I think it will help a good few.
After taking a six year break (dropped out of college) I got back behind the yoke and completed my PPL a week ago! I mainly did it to get a job in the drone industry, but I’m starting to consider furthering my pilot career. Thanks for the video Swayne!
'best of luck kid. Nice vids! After 20 years spent at your parent airline, I'm still not safe from the chopping block. Young pilots take heed: This career is not for the faint hearted. Externalities happen quite regularly, creating turmoil. Most likely you will experience many or all of the following: Furlough, bankruptcy, merger and seniority integration, stagnation, and long term or short term disability (airline pilots must maintain a 1st class medical, it is surprising how easy it is to lose it temporarily or even permanently). Being an airline pilot can be very rewarding, but you better realise that it's never as good as it seems, and never as bad as it seems. One must have a resilient, never give up, attitude and be able to take hits to the chin like a champion boxer. My best wishes to all those junior , and not so junior, pilots going forward.
Love the message at the end! It's so easy to get caught up in the rat race and forget to appreciate your training and hour building. Thanks for the video!

And i should add, your videos portray the airline nicely, you aren't critiquing crew room facilities or payroll issues- and that isnt your intention, which i respect. The airline helps you in getting outstanding footage in air, and also on ground, surely adds to value of video.

I being following you for a while, and you grow so much thanks for all the videos and inspiration you bring to all of us that will be pilots thanks again God bless you brother.
Currently a flight instructor here in Florida. The time building has definitely slowed down due to COVID-19. I will say it is much easier to log the diversity of flight time requirements for ATP as an instructor, especially PIC time. I think the hardest would be logging night time, but the regs allow you to allot 25 night landings for hours after 20 previous completed night landings. That’s only 75 hours minimum after that to meet the 100 hour night requirement. Love your videos as always Swayne! Hopefully once the industry recovers I’ll be right up there with you flying 121.
It's a tough time but we will get through it! Also.. try out LogTen Pro as an electronic logbook. I've used it for years and it's been a great way to have all of my data backed up: coradine.com/swayne/

As an aspiring pilot who’s had one lesson, this is probably the single most helpful video to give me an idea of what I can do as soon as I reach 250 hours and get my commercial license! I’ll still most likely strive for the CFI route, but seeing these other options gives me a lot of hope about building my hours and achieving the goals I’m hoping to reach!
Thank you for making this video. I want to add that Light Sport airplane often cost $20/hr to run. Buying one cost around $60k. This is one of this best way to build hours.
Pretty informative video especially for people new to aviation. I got all of my flight experience banner towing. In my opinion it’s definitely one of the more difficult routes but also the most rewarding. I’ve known quite a few airline pilots who built up all of their time in more traditional ways such as instructing. Most of them go on to become safe and successful airline pilot but there’s always a handful that slip through the cracks and never become truly skilled pilots. I cannot say the same of pilots who cut their teeth towing banners. I guess something about cruising around at 500ft on the edge of a stall makes you a good pilot.
Helpful tip. If you are in high school take your time to research universities that have a degree in a field and also offer flight school with your degree. A great one is Geography and Aviation at the University of Waterloo.
I was bored and just typed “pilot” in the search. First video that popped up! And it said 5hrs ago! (That’s early for me lol). Always trusting you with great reliable content 👍
Currently flying aerial survey for a small company. Love the company and love my coworkers. Winter time is our busy season like you said. Love the videos. Keep it up!
Thank you Swayne for your Professionalism and diligence. I've enjoyed following along and stumbled across a personal connection when you announced the hiring of a Mokulele Pilot ,great job.
Even though I am not a future pilot, these videos are really well done and interesting for those who just want a little behind the scenes of the airline industry. Keep up the good work.
Hoping all this garbage is over with by the time school's done. This fall is the big day! Season? Met you at AirVenture last year and it was an interesting but fun experience. Glad my friends told me who you are. You're videos are great!
I loved that video!👍 I am currently trying to build up flight time and experience in a glider-club. I love that hobby, because it gives you the opportunity to realize from a low age, how wonderful aviation really is...
I’m currently serving my last year in the Marines and your videos are very helpful for me to reach my goal of flying for American Airlines one day. The plan right now is to attend Embry Riddle in Daytona Beach, FL and either joining a cadet program or going the CFI route to build my hours. Keep the vids coming!
Great video Swayne! I see where American is bringing back the E-175 and E-145's into full service on June 3rd! I hope you're included in that re-start. It's been a tough few months and I'm sure you're looking forward to getting back to it!
I needed this video! Thanks for doing this. I recently applied to aviation school and even if I don't get into flying passengers, I would be happy doing all of these jobs. Now I know how to build hours, too.

Flying LSA is fun!
super cool thank you for sharing my son is learning to be a piliot thanks for sharing
Glad it helped!
Had to look at it again, always the best....
Swayne with the good info! Thanks for the tips man!
Glad it helps!
Great article Swayne thanks for breaking it down
Glad you liked it!
Thanks! Your videos keep gettig better and better.
Glad you enjoyed it! I spent a LOT of time making this one
My airline in Airway Sim runs mainly Grand Caravans and ERJs. I've also flown the Grand Caravan in FSX plenty and GOD she's a beaut.
Thanks Jason! Glad the search brought you here!
Thanks for sharing this SWAYNE you rock!!
Thanks for the video
I've always wanted to become an airline pilot
It’s nice to see another video. I was beginning to worry and possibly thinking that you got furloughed and decided not to continue with videos
Nope! More to come soon
Sounds great. Your videos have inspired me to take a closer look into a career in aviation. Hopefully I can start flight school this summer.
Thanks a lot for this video. I really do. Im a ppl student about to finish and honestly this video helped me...
Currently flying aerial survey for a small company. Love the company and love my coworkers. Winter time is our busy season like you said. Love the videos. Keep it up!
I love learning about the life of a pilot.....thanks for the vids!
Thank you Swayne for your Professionalism and diligence. I've enjoyed following along and stumbled across a personal connection when you announced the hiring of a Mokulele Pilot ,great job.
Thanks for following along for so many years!
Even though I am not a future pilot, these videos are really well done and interesting for those who just want a little behind the scenes of the airline industry. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching, Grady!
Hoping all this garbage is over with by the time school's done. This fall is the big day! Season? Met you at AirVenture last year and it was an interesting but fun experience. Glad my friends told me who you are. You're videos are great!
Nice to meet you! I hope this all gets sorted out soon too!
Glad the videos are helping and thanks for your service!
Can an international student get a job as a pilot in the USA after doing bachelors in aviation in USA?

Great video Swayne! I see where American is bringing back the E-175 and E-145's into full service on June 3rd! I hope you're included in that re-start. It's been a tough few months and I'm sure you're looking forward to getting back to it!
I am!
Wow! Thank you so much Swayne! As an aspiring pilot, this is just what I needed right now!
That's awesome, Jake! Glad I could help
I needed this video! Thanks for doing this. I recently applied to aviation school and even if I don't get into flying passengers, I would be happy doing all of these jobs. Now I know how to build hours, too.
