    Nick I am with you regarding daggerboards. Been sailing a Helia 44 past 6 years, have encountered many cats with daggerboards, and have zero envy. Yes, they can sail a few degrees higher into the wind, but so what, we are cruisers, not racers. If you are in such a panic to get somewhere, buy a powercat. Otherwise, daggers are not worth the bother. They are a hassle otherwise, especially in shallow water, like where we are based in the Bahamas. And oh by the way, if it is mission critical to point higher upwind lets say to clear a reef or make a lay line you want, guess what I do? Just start the leeward engine, give it some moderate rpms, and suddenly you are pointing upwind like a monohull racer, easy peasy.

    One thing we've found that works a treat are silicon baking sheets for placing on a counter then placing whatever on top of them. They really work for preventing sliding - much better than those no-slip grip mats. If noting else, they also do double as great BBQ cooking sheets.

    On our cat and previous cat we motor up to the buoy on our helm side go slowly past it and my partner puts the line through the buoy by standing on the back step. Easy for me to see the buoy and her and then she walks the line to the front as we float backward. Works every time no hanging off the front with boat hooks etc

    I found that picking up a mooring from the stern is much easier than the bow, especially with your visibility and communications situation. Run a line from a bow cleat to the stern, pick up the mooring and then walk the line forward and make your mooring lines secure. I hope this works for you....

    • @sirox68
      @sirox68 Рік тому +4

      Correct, that's what we do too on our catamaran. Picking up a buoy from the stern on a catamaran is also what instructors and skippers teach, as it's a much easier operation (of course it requires a long line as it needs to be attached to the bow cleat). If there's wind, the stern should in fact point to the wind, and then the boat can rotate once secured.

    • @aeasthouse316
      @aeasthouse316 Рік тому

      very interesting, but not following. The line you take to the stern, are you running it over you stations, or to the side of the boat? Would love to see how it's done

    • @robm.4512
      @robm.4512 Рік тому +3

      @@aeasthouse316You lay the warp along the side deck from bow to stern with the end at the bow made off to a cleat.
      Get hold of the bouy from the stern step, pass the loose end of the line through the mooring ring on the bouy then walk forward passing the warp above the stanchions as you go while pulling in on the loose end to shorten the warp.
      Once you get back to the bow adjust the warp to the required length and make off the remaining loose end.
      There’s no need to run it outboard of the stanchions before looping it through the bouy so there’s never the risk of potentially having a loose line in the water to foul a prop.
      Just discovered that it’s harder to describe than do, all respect is due to the writers of technical manuals, I am clearly not one of them! 😂

    • @johnmayer3433
      @johnmayer3433 Рік тому

      Clear explanation. But it means in high winds all the load has to be handled manually for some time, doesn't it

    • @sirox68
      @sirox68 Рік тому +1

      @@johnmayer3433 no because you can always temporarily tie the line on a side cleat if necessary (you can’t handle the load manually!). It’s really much easier done than said. And it’s the only way really to pick up a mooring buoy in high winds (with the stern towards the wind), as it’s too hard to keep the bow to the wind if the wind is very strong.

    Nick and Terysa,
    First, I would like to say that I wouldn't think that Nick was complaining; making what might be a valuable point for someone anticipating the purchase of a catamaran, coming from an experienced sailor. Good advice Nick.
    Secondly, out of the mere 35 UA-cam sailing channels that I am subscribed to, I have just realized that y'all's channel is by far my favorite. Y'all always seem to make me smile, you're straight forward with what I view as an honest opinion, there isn't a lot of prescripted dialogue (if any), there isn't any drama, and I really just enjoy watching y'all's fun loving nature. Besides y'all enjoy beer as much as I do. Thank y'all so very much for sharing.

    Personally I'd take the daggerboards - you can look at it as giving you the lateral stability when you need it (going upwind) and more importantly not having it when you're going downwind so less drag more stability... that said RR2 seems to sail beautifully so from a less things to break point of view I can see nicks point!

    Nick, I love your matter of fact profanity laced realistic approach to topics. Cruising should be enjoyable.... not a frigin continuous race. Daggerboards are nice to have if your being chased by a storm and you need all the help you can get. I used to have a motorhome. I would set the cruise for 55 and just sit back and listen to music and enjoy the ride. Then be passed on the down hill by land yachts blowing past me at 80 miles an hour towing a car behind on a windy day. I knew it was only a matter of time before I would pass them on the side of the road either tying their now totalled awnings on the roof or a post tire blow out scene of assholes, elbows, cottage cheese, and camping accessories strewn all over the highway. Enjoy the ride!! Life don't have to be a race.

    Your sails look good, you must be happy with those. Of course if your boat is faster then the apparent wind is further forward and you do less "downwind" sailing. Daggerboards also increase performance downwind as when raised they reduce drag, so increase speed.

    Hi Guys, congrats on your wonderful boat and nice to see you enjoying catamaran life now! The daggerboard / centreboard advantage upwind is only one of the minor ones - the other benefits are :
    - ability to to anchor closer to shore than all the other boats (ability to get a spot even when the anchorage is "full")
    - ability to go into rivers / creeks / mangroves for storm and cyclone protection
    - ability to anchor in really shallow water to get out of swell
    - ability to nose up to the beach and step ashore and beach boat if rudders lift too
    - ability to sail into coral atolls with no entry passage as you can sail over the reef at high tide.
    - faster downwind sailing (less water resistance)
    - less risk of capsize in really bad conditions
    - less risk of hull damage if we hit rocks or reef with the kick up centreboard
    It is those social benefits that we love and the performance aspects are only an added benefit... Keep up the great work and enjoy learning how to get the most our of your cat!!!
    Regards, Dr John

    Have you ever owned a boat with Dagger boards? Its not only upwind they come in handy, downwind also you can lift them right out and have way less wetted surface. Way less sanding and antifouling, your boat draws less and yeah you can sail properly upwind and no, its not only 5% better angle. About the only downsides are they take up a tiny bit of space in the hulls and they might add to the cost of your vessel. Daggerboards, rotating masts, full width travelers, all great things to have on a Cat if you are interested in sailing performance.

    Hey guys, I'm loving that boat it is sweet. Reefing: don't get lulled by the comfort of your catamaran. If you are even discussing reefing while sailing a Catamaran, just do it. At 20 knots, if the wind builds to 25 knots, you are going to have a heck of a time furling that big headsail (screecher?) as for the daggerboards, we don't have them but I've sailed a big cat that has them (catana 41 and Dolphin 46(48?). Where your bow is pointing relative to the wind is one thing. 40 degrees? awesome! I agree that sailing upwind is uncomfortable. Why point another 5 degrees and make the ride even more uncomfortable. Where you will see a difference with daggerboards is in how much leeway you are making. A cat with daggerboards will sail a more true course than one without. I'm sure you've noticed that in comparison to your last boat. Your COG with daggerboards involved will allow you to sail close to the wind but point a more true course.

    • @sirox68
      @sirox68 Рік тому

      With my Nautitech 40 Open catamaran with keels, I point very comfortably at 35 degrees AWA cruising at 65% of TWS, with a 2-degree leeway. The leeway has been measured precisely with instrumentation.
      So what you say may be true if you compare a daggerboarded cat with a Lagoon or FP. But a more performance oriented cat points very well even with keels. Like Nick, I honestly don’t see the point of daggerboards.

    Regarding upwind performance, you should expect decent performance before big speed slowdown to about 32* AWA. But since you w got minikeels and are more sensitive to stalling and leeway, keep to around 34-35* AWA.
    The biggest problem I could see was that your mainsail was way under trimmed - the leech was much too loose. Tighten the mainsheet until your top horizontal batten (not the 45* gaff batten supporting your square top) is parallel to the boom. And position your boom using the traveller so that it is on the centreline. This is appropriate for relatively flat water. If you need power to get through waves then ease the boom down from centreline 2-3*, maybe 30cm down from centreline depending on the length of your boom. Note that I’m referring to boom position, not your traveller position.
    Regarding the difference between STW and SOG, if you’re sure there wasn’t current then it’s simply a calibration issue. You should be able to calibrate your STW using your pilot controller. Add a calibration factor for every knot of boat speed between 2 and 8 and every 2-3 knots up to 20 or so.
    Those helm positions are pretty sheltered, so it looks like you should invest in some headsets. Or figure out a way to be at the helm and have your head above the cabin top. Clear communications are very important.
    Nick’s complaints about sailing upwind seemed very RR1 - what was your problem with the upwind sailing your were doing? As for your thoughts about daggerboards, those were simply ignorant. That’s OK, you haven’t sailed a boat with daggerboards. But that isn’t the kind of boat that you chose, so stick to your own knitting.
    And for God’s sake, get a Swiss flag already and properly represent your boat’s nationality. That UK land flag is incorrect and misrepresenting the boat’s registration. This does matter.

    • @tomjarecki
      @tomjarecki Рік тому

      My mistake, RR2 is on the British Ships Registry. The legal flag for a vessel is the Red Ensign. The Union Jack is only for land. Nic and Theresa should fix this - it’s very easy to buy flags and ensigns online.

    Boats prefer the wind from the stern when mooring, try backing up to the bouy, especially when it's windy. Once you are attached have a cup of tea then you can take a line from the bow to the bouy then let the stern line go. The boat will swing into the wind. This way you can hear each other, all very stress free.

    I learn so very much from watching you sail and anchor. A Chris White design has the helm in the front of the cabin so both people can hear each other easier. A forward cockpit is cooler at anchor. I am learning about basalt and dyneema rope. I believe many countries in the world are working feverishly at the mass production of graphene. They already have small graphene capacitors that replace batteries and charge up rapidly. Graphene is top secret.

    I love the look and feel of a monohull under sail......even up wind....but watching you make tea and leaving your dishes to dry on the counter while sailing up wind is a pretty convincing argument for a cat!🤔
    Hope you picked up some marriage savers when you were at the boat show!!😎

    Need to get marriage savers (headsets)
    Chat with Nicky and Jason about them

    I''m sure it's already on your shopping list, but a pair of headsets to talk to each other, and maybe a little bow camera you can see from the helm would be great.

  • @dc1544
    @dc1544 Рік тому

    Head sets so you can talk. Dagger boards really come in handy on long passages where .5-1 knot faster adds up. Dealing with them for short passages I agree. Most wont see a big performance increase until your catamaran is 52' or longer water line. Like the HH 55. I wouldn't do dagger boards on the boat Wynns are getting its to short to see big improvements.

    A couple of Headsets would help your communications from the front of the boat to the helm. It will reduce your stress. Happy sailing....

    Dagger boards also allow you to sail slowly up wind in a bad sea. So increase comfort….as you say most sailing is up wind.

    Great stuff guys, well done! How 'bout some of those headsets (do Nikki and Jason use them?) for easier communication when someone is forward, go for it!

    You two need some Raido head sets to talk to each other for when trying to get a mooring ball or anchor, or even backing in to a dock one on the front one on the back

    Terysa, maybe you need to have a custom stool with a higher seat made for that nav station. I would imagine it wouldn’t be that complicated to do.

    Glad to see you back out sailing. I have really enjoyed watching the new boat joys and woes. I just sold my mono hull and have been looking at a cat's. What is the headroom in the galley and the pontoons and were the 1260's you charted any higher? I have the oppisite problem as Terysa, I am too bloody tall a little over 2m.

    Thanks for the content! I’m curious to get your opinion on the pros and cons of RR and RR2 (sloop vs cat sailing performance). Seems like you need to pay very close attention to rigging stress on a cat while under sail compared to a monohull when weather helm regulates ideal sail area.

    Nic is correct that dagger boards provide one more thing to manage on a sailboat and that the use of keel like extensions below the bottom of the boat do provide some upwind capability. All that said:
    1. Keels provide downwind drag and cost you about 1 knot maybe more.
    2. Keels do not allow you to modulate like the daggerboards do. When sailing upwind which is about 40% of the time the modulation of the daggerboard and angle to the wind allow you to manage the ride quality far better than any keel design. Often it is about smoothing the ride and making good progress. That can only be done with daggerboards.
    3. And Nic is absolutely correct that they are one more thing to manage on a sailboat.
    But I get it. Nic has a boat without daggerboards and of course he is going to defend his choice. Good defense Nic.
