Not including fleet sales because Honda doesn't sell to rental fleets the ACCORD is the best selling sedan in America for a very long time. Toyota sells to rental fleets and that's how they beat Honda.
Honda absolutely sells to rental and fleet. I’ve worked for Honda for 25 years, and it was the Taurus that made that claim. (Because FORD counted every sedan retailed and wholesaled.) It’s really not close, Toyota offers as many trucks as Honda does cars. It’s not even apples and oranges, Toyota has smoked the midsize sedan market until Hyundai got their act together.
I’d take a Civic over a Corolla too. But Your stats on where Toyota’s are built are just wrong dude. The most American car on the road, via PARTS and ASSEMBLY is the Toyota Camry. And it has been for a longtime. And let your interference motor break a timing chain and say bye bye to your valves and rods. The Yota you just replace the timing belt/water pump and belt tensioner and your done. Bout $200 in parts. Not sure where your getting your facts
I agree Scotty! My 2020 Civic Sport Sedan has the K20C2 2.0L naturally aspirated port injected engine and also a 6 speed manual transmission. NA engine + 6MT is the way to go for reliability 👍🏻
@Le-WiiSs I already have a fast 667whp V8 6MT weekend/track car. My Civic is my daily driver and I wanted something reliable and practical. The 2.0 K20 NA motor definitely is not fast, but it’s a bulletproof reliable engine that’s actually quite eager to rev to high rpm’s, and suprisingly fun to drive when paired to a manual transmission. I’ve driven the 2.0 with the CVT and it was HORRIBLE, a completely different driving experience.
i have 2021 civic lx which is 2.0 ltre with the variable trans and i think may be the last year for key ignition. had the 2019 sport hatvh but figured on taking advantage of the need for used cars. it was the pearl grey and a beaut but the sounder engine made me switch.
2004 Sienna, 2005 Camry, 2008 Accord, 2014 Accord, 2014 Mazda 6. All run like new. I change oil and do regular maintenance and these 3 car makers are all I need.
I have a 2010 accord too that I bought in 2017. It burns oil, and I'm having catalytic converter issues. I changed it in 2019, two years later, it's faulty again. Do you have same issue?
Scotty forgets 1 thing. Mazda was Ford side project. Pretty much neglected and handed scraps. But now Mazda no longer has Ford to listen to. So the quality has gone up some
You're the man Scotty I've been my own mechanic and car dealer I have much respect for you you are a very honest mechanic that helped so many people you even help me you're very knowledgeable looking forward to your next video
Every time Scotty mentions the crappy Chrysler, it hurts: I have a 2012 Chrysler 200S hardtop convertible. It's been fun to drive, but maintenance is killing me; I've had to replace the battery, alternator, main computer, and now it looks like I'll have to do the front end, the bushings in the front control arms are shot & one of my engine mounts is broken. Latest quote is $1800 to get that done. I wish I still had my 1952 VW bug, that engine I could take apart & put back together blindfolded, and the suspension & 4 speed manual were fantastic. It had good A/C too: the floor panels were all rusted out & I got plenty of ventilation! That car cost me $140 in 1971, yes that's all, and I drove it over 7500 miles criscrossing the USA; one tire blowout & one wheel bearing was all that went wrong. I need a time machine, sigh. I liked the world better back then too!
In Europe we have it as the Accord and yes,it looks really nice with those sharp lines, always liked it.Almost bought one but ended up with an 8th gen Civic sedan because I dont need that big of a car,I love this too
Agreed. I had been sleeping on Mazda and only had Honda or Toyota. Took a chance on a 2014 Mazda 6 for my wife. I gotta say I'm impressed! Could use another 15 horsepower but the handling is outstanding! Out on a winding, road is where it really gets fun. Runs like the day we bought it 4 years ago.
I agree a manual transmission is way more reliable. I personally prefer a stick shift in smaller cars like the civic….I grew up driving them and feel more in control as well. I’m in the process of looking for my teen daughters first car and I’m highly suggesting a manual transmission. I feel one should learn to drive on a manual transmission……it makes you pay more attention while driving too!
Thank you Scotty. A very informative video. You have confirmed my view of the excellence of Honda engineering. I live in Australia in the Blue Mountains to the west of Sydney. I bought a 2002 Honda V6L in 2007 with 22,000 klms on the clock. It has now done 228,000 klms and has given reliable, trouble free motoring over the last 15 years with many trips to Brisbane and Melbourne. It still drives like new. The Honda V6 V-Tech engine is superb, quiet and powerful.
@@LensOfWisdom I meant "K" in thousands of miles. I thought that was obvious. My mistake. So, if you meant kilometers, than I clearly have more than you.
While I'm not sure about their newer vehicles, pre-1999 Honda drivetrain reliability is off-the-charts incredible. I bought a used 1993 Civic DX in 1995 for $7000. It had 8,000 miles on it. I proceeded to drive it for 27 years before finally giving it away to an acquaintance going through financially hard times this year, who's spouse is going suffering from a terminal disease. In all of that time, I spent roughly $4,000 in repairs/maintenance on it, doing most of them myself. While the rust on the vehicle is significant (thank you, northern winters/salt) it still runs beautifully (or at least still did, when I last saw it two weeks ago), and was averaging 38 mpg as recently as last year when I stopped keeping track of the mileage via Fuelly.
I live inNH, my cars dont have rust. And ones my wifes q4 escape titanium. And my 5 SPD 0 7 civic SI., ,I clean and detail them spring summer and fall. But in the winter I go to a brushless car wash, to keep the saltoff , andi also do the underbody wash, I've always done that. The won't rust if you don't leave the salt on them
I agree I believe ur lucky if a new car lasts the duration of the loan.i won't buy a car newer than 2001 & only Toyota or Honda or Mazda Protégé nothing else
@@sclark1948 Like most older Toyota engines the 1.8L in the Mazda Protégé was a non interference engine so if the belt jumps or breaks u can tow it home or shop slap another timing belt & ur good.
Until I started watching Scotty I’d never owned a Toyota (had a ‘93 Accord and a 2014 CRV….both superb cars). But now I have two Toyotas, one a wonderful old 2007 Scion tC with 195,000 miles on it, that is a little rocket, and the other is a 2022 Corolla Cross that is just magnificent, but underpowered and with a somewhat clunky CVT transmission. I would never buy a car with GDI fuel injection and since the Corolla cross has both GDI and MPI, no intake valve problems are anticipated. I’ve always loved GM cars, hated Chryslers, and tolerated Fords, but now would never own anything in the future but a Toyota or a Honda……simply the best cars made. Dr. K.
Mazda seems to be getting better. I’d like to Scotty check out a Mazda3, 6, or CX-5 from the most recent generations. You’d think the SkyActive engines and the tried and true 6 speed automatic transmission (no longer from Ford) would be pretty reliable.
Things are not as they seem. 98% of kids toy Mazdas end up in the toilet as not worth repair within 12 years. Don’t believe me,just look around for older models while you’re on the road. Advertising dollars don’t equal lastability. 💸🚽
'89 Civic Si, '94 Integra, and a '99 Accord were three of the best cars I have owned. I drove them all hard to over 400,000km and they went on to live many more after I sold them
I have a 2004 Honda Accord EXL V6. Runs great only 110000 miles. Also 2015 Tacoma with 48000 miles. Both great. Only problem with the Tacoma was a mouse chewed wires to the engine knock sensor so had to get that fixed.
One American car that could be on the list is the Ford Crown Vic/Mercury Grand Marquis/Lincoln Town Car. They aren't particularly sophisticated but they are built like tanks and can last a very long time if you just do regular maintenance.
Toyota teaming with Mazda has made Mazda a better vehicle especially the CX-5. Previously Mazda and Ford made terrible progress and cars. Ford still hasn’t learned anything
Am I the only one who thinks that the ca. 2019 Toyota Camry has one of the ugliest faces of any car? The current Civic is so innocuous and forgettable as to be the 50% gray of cars, but the Camry, to me, is just hideous.
No! You are not alone. Most Toyota vehicles are hideous and frumpy looking. Hondas look better but they seem to be running out of design ideas because the new Civic looks outdated and forgettable. If Nissan gets their reliability in order (which they have slightly improved on) and Mazda gets their marketing and presence up it's over for Toyota and Honda bcuz Nissan and Mazda are killing it with some beautiful cars with great tech.
My wife's Honda Fit has been much more reliable than my Toyota Corolla. We got them both new in 2010 and still have them. My Corolla has half the mileage of her Honda.
As far as current generation Toyota Camry is definitely the way to go. Standard 8 speed auto and natural aspirated engines and the styling is great on the outside !
Scotty is preaching to the choir. In 2019 I sold my 2016 F-150 5.0 and bought a 2016 Civic LX with 19k miles for $12k cash. I put an upgraded Pioneer Apple Carplay head unit in and upgraded the wheels. I love the 2.0 naturally aspirated motor. I drive 90% highway miles and just turned 97,000. I change the oil every 10k with full synthetic oil. No problems at all. At 80k I drained and filled the CVT fluid and coolant. At 90k I replaced the plugs, coils, PCV valve and pads and rotors. Still runs like day 1. The interior is still at 90%. I plan to run this thing to at least 500k then buy another year to two year old Civic.
I like your informative videos Scotty. I own 2004 Toyota RAV4 5 speed still returning the favor after 307k miles. Regular oil changes and scheduled maintenance.
The Civic can once again be bought with the 6-speed and N/A engine, though I believe it has to the the hatchback (correct me if I’m wrong). The sedan no longer has the 6-speed.
You’re absolutely correct. I have a 2020 Civic Sport Sedan 6MT. The 2020 model year was the last year to get the manual in the sedan with the 2.0 engine. You can get the 11th gen with 2.0 + manual but hatchback only as you said 👍🏻
@@spoton3278 Pretty sure if anyone can do a turbo right it would be Toyota and if there's a problem they'll issue a TSB and take care of it under warranty.
I believe mazda is far better and more reliable than toyota.I m sorry Scotty.I am not talking about wankel engines...Also the 1.5T honda engine is much better that the 1.2T hybrid toyota...
Mazda really nailed it with the more recent CX-5, especially with turbo. Drives better than all the other mainstream SUV's. The CRV does have better mpg, the bigger dealer network and parts availability.
@@paulseary7041 : Just imagine a camry with a 1.8 Liter motor in it, it can happen. They already did it with the Accord, put in a engine below 2.0L in it, and for long time the Accord had 2.4L in it, as well as the V6 engines too.
My car is accord 2005 4cylinders it has over 650.000 km and still running perfect just like manufacture condition except for the seat and the interior in general along with the paint other than that honestly nothing If anyone knows where can i buy new seats with doors decor i will be pretty much thankful because it kills me everytime i get in 😅
I BOUGHT a TOYOTA COROLLA 2007 MADE IN JAPAN. HIGH MILEAGE BUT I LOVE MY TOY, JUST HERE LATELY SHE'S NOT ACTING RIGHT GIVE GAS SHE ACTS LIKE GOING TO QUIT, I REPLACED THE BATTERY, THE ALTERNATOR THE ALTER WAS BAD . THE ENGINE LITE GOES ON AND OFF. Makes you yearn for the old vehicles, MORE SIMPLE TO WORK ON. STILL LOVE MY LITTLE BLUE TOYOTA .
He is not trashing them. He never said f mexico. He just said he rather buy texas made toyotas for example rather than mexican.. he also prefers japan made over texas made.. so what? He is trashing america ? Think about what you are saying. Its all about peace of mind.. for example if your mother had a remedy as you grew up for a cold & you stuck with it, why would you take advil? Sometimes the placebo effect works wonders.. why knock someone for speakin his mind? One love tho!
I bought a used Pontiac 6000 and I was the second owner and it at 67,000 miles on it when it was only three years old because it was a rental car I had it for a long while and I had 324,000 miles when I sold it for $500 . It didn't owe me a dime I sure got my money's worth out of it.
One of the reasons I have held onto my 2007 Honda Accord V6 is because it is the last Honda accord V6 that you can get the manual transmission. I have now 249,312 miles on it and it just keeps going and going. I have replace the clutch twice but that’s it.
You would have to go to an Accord Coupe to get a later 6-6 combo, but the 2006-07 6-6 sedans are unicorns and becoming valuable right now. The other option would be 2004-08 Acura TL with 6-6. Accords with the k24 4-cyl and 5-speed manual are also becoming rare and desirable.
I bought a 2016 Mazda 6 because I didn't want a CVT transmission. I get 38mpg on the highway. I gave my daughter my 2001 honda accord 4cyl. She has 225000 miles on it now.
I love Hondas. My first car was an 01 Accord EX, it wasn't the infamous 6th gen transmission issues that killed it, it was body shops being unable to find parts and hiking labor up so much my insurance totaled it after a bad winter. I might have kept it if I had a space of my own to repair as I had wanted to see it through to 200k miles, but alas, I'm a single professional in a city. But, my new car is a 2015 Honda Civic EX-L, so..... I'm enjoying the leather heated seats, Bluetooth connectivity, and kept my moonroof, without breaking the bank on costs. My only minor sadness is the trunk space was a downgrade from the Accord, but it'll just mean I'll have to fold the seats down for Costco runs. Cheers for the video!
If they brought back the Accord or Camry wagon (possibly hybrid?) I would buy one in a heartbeat. Not lifted, not a Venza, just a long wagon. I have a 2013 CR-V and the jitter is really minor… it does it at the same place leaving my neighborhood for 1-2 seconds then goes away. No way I would spend 3k to fix it.
Yeeeeess!!... Totally agree... Please bring back affordable, reliable & fun to drive sporty wagons!!... Not everyone wants to drive the mass populated SUVs.
A camry wagon is EXACTLY what I wish they would make. Just keep the dimensions the same. Sick of every F'ing thing getting bigger and bigger every year.
Right on Scotty. I've owned a Camry and a Corolla. Currently I own an Accord and an HRV from Honda. Honda cars are much more enjoyable to own and drive and handle much better than the Toyotas.
thank you scotty!! I am getting ready to buy a used vehicle and have been all over online looking for information on the cars. I bought this 2004 rav4 and ended up having to fix it myself and found out about toyota little ECU problems they wouldn't recall. so I've been looking at Honda and the chevy some too. the cruise and the sonic. idk but listening to you.
Personal preference for me is the Toyotas over the Hondas - for me it was mostly brand loyalty. This is mostly because I have owned more new Toyotas (a 1994 Camry v6, two 1998 4-Runners, a 2001 Lexus Rx300, a 2010 Venza (v6), a 2021 RAV4) than new Hondas (a 2005 Civic and a 2006 Accord). Weaknesses for the Toyotas was I found the transmission to be cold blooded and did not like shifting when cold. The RAV4's AISIN 8-speed transmission finally fixed this issue. Hondas trans were much less cold blooded and a little snappier for shifting. Both Hondas had SOHC engines while the Toyotas all had DOHC engines - I've always been a sucker for DOHC engines. I was particularly impressed with the Civic's rear drum brakes that lasted for the entire time we owned the car (about 10 years - was given to a mechanic family member who still didn't need to do the rear brakes for another couple years). The cars I was least impressed with were one of the 4-runners (one was stolen about a month after purchase and second had such horrible gas milage it had me getting rid of it within 3 years) and the Accord (defective windshield, bad rear stabilizer bar links and and AC compressor all within 4 years). I was most impressed by the 1994 Camry which stayed in my stable a record (for me) 12 years and was handed down to my daughter when she went to college. The Honda Civic was purchased for my daughter after the Camry got t-boned in a parking lot.
When I was considering buying a new hybrid instead of rebuilding the engine on my 99 Mustang six, I test drove the Honda Accord Hybrid, and the Ford Fusion Hybrid - both were impressive. On driving, I would have gone with the Ford Fusion, but it was close race. On either I would pull off the "low rolling resistance" tires that were supposed to be top of the line for that class, as they sucked. And I am a conservative driver! I decided to rebuild my engine, as I love my Mustang six, and the price of insurance, sky high registration in California, etc -
After owning a 2011 MINI (manual) and a 2016 Corolla (manual), my new 2018 Civic LX 2.0L No turbo (manual) is by far the better car. The clutch feels a lot better on it than my other cars. Though I get slightly less gas mileage on it than my previous ones, maybe 50-80km less/tank

My nostalgia car is the 67 falcon I drove in the mid 70s. I dropped the transmission to my chest to replace the clutch.

I agree a manual transmission is way more reliable. I personally prefer a stick shift in smaller cars like the civic….I grew up driving them and feel more in control as well. I’m in the process of looking for my teen daughters first car and I’m highly suggesting a manual transmission.

Dr. K.
Hey Scotty..Honda should hire you 🤔 as an experienced mechanic.. spokesman! 😎
Mazda seems to be getting better. I’d like to Scotty check out a Mazda3, 6, or CX-5 from the most recent generations. You’d think the SkyActive engines and the tried and true 6 speed automatic transmission (no longer from Ford) would be pretty reliable.
I hear Mazda stopped including the cylinder deactivation in most of their vehicles (save certain trim levels), so the company cares about reliability.
Things are not as they seem. 98% of kids toy Mazdas end up in the toilet as not worth repair within 12 years. Don’t believe me,just look around for older models while you’re on the road. Advertising dollars don’t equal lastability. 💸🚽

We need a GR Camry
Them 3rd generation Camry (92-96) we're an absolute great cars. Not the best at mpg but very smooth ride and reliable based on owning a 93 and a 96.
I decided to rebuild my engine, as I love my Mustang six, and the price of insurance, sky high registration in California, etc -
Robbery by the bloodsucker "elites"..?
i will keep buying manual transmission. they are more fun.
Why would you compare a 2011 to a 2018 ?
Hondas are more fun to drive than Toyotas however the Lexus is way better than an Acura.
