In 2018, MICS piloted a new study method to study fishing gear entanglement scars in fin whales and blue whales using aerial imagery, collected by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS, aka drones). Most entanglements scars on whales appear around the peduncle and tail part of the body, which fin and blue whales most frequently keep below the surface, and are therefore not visible from the surface. Using this new method, MICS was able to photo-identify whales and detect scars which would otherwise not have been seen.
