The Drone Project - Fin whale entanglement rates in Canada (Gulf of St. Lawrence)
ATTENTION: This footage was obtained under Federal Permit # QUE-LEP-003-2018 for the purpose of scientific research.
In 2018, MICS piloted a new study method to study fishing gear entanglement scars in fin whales and blue whales using aerial imagery, collected by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS, aka drones). Most entanglements scars on whales appear around the peduncle and tail part of the body, which fin and blue whales most frequently keep below the surface, and are therefore not visible from the surface. Using this new method, MICS was able to photo-identify whales and detect scars which would otherwise not have been seen.

Bubblenet feeding in the St. Lawrence
Our first video of the year is a throwback to a special moment, recorded by MICS researchers in August 2018. Researchers witnessed two humpback whales partaking in a foraging technique called bubblenet feeding. This feeding behaviour is an extremely rare event in the St. Lawrence, and is usually observed in the Gulf of Maine and the Bay of Fundy, among other places. Our collaborators from the C...

North Atlantic right whales: a tender moment in the St. Lawrence
The MICS research team had a rare encounter with two female right whales on August 19th, 2018. As the sun was setting on a calm day in the St. Lawrence, we came across a pair that was exhibiting behaviour typical of surface-active groups (SAG). This behaviour has been well-documented in North Atlantic right whales, and has been linked to mating behaviour, as well as play and social bonding. We ...
Harp seals swimming on their backs
Harp seals (Phoca groenlandica) are often seen in large groups of between tens to hundreds of individuals in the St. Lawrence. They will often swim on their backs at the surface - it is thought that this allows them to better scan the environment below, because their eyes are positioned toward the top of their head. Drone footage by TerreSky (www.terresky.com) Music: Be The Best by Ian Post (Dr...
RARE FOOTAGE OF FIN WHALE GROUP BEHAVIOUR
MICS uses drones as the main tool in its entanglement research project to assess scarring rates in fin whales. Those amazing clips provide us with a brand new perspective that allows us to see things we normally wouldn’t. It appears that a couple of individuals each approach the animal ahead of them from the right to nudge them. Those individuals react by shifting direction slightly and rolling...

    I love this but can someone please add some ID cards? I see some Humpbacks, some Grey Seals and I think Minke but what's the HOLY BIG monster at 0:25? Is that a Blue or a Fin Whale?

    • @micscanada480
      @micscanada480 6 років тому

      Hello! Thanks for asking. The species present - from what we could see - were humpback whales, fin whales, minke whales, harp seals, arctic terns, common gulls, gannets and, of course, capelin :) And the animal at 0:25 is indeed a fin whale close up - you can tell by the light pigmentation (blaze and chevron).
