  • Our first video of the year is a throwback to a special moment, recorded by MICS researchers in August 2018. Researchers witnessed two humpback whales partaking in a foraging technique called bubblenet feeding. This feeding behaviour is an extremely rare event in the St. Lawrence, and is usually observed in the Gulf of Maine and the Bay of Fundy, among other places. Our collaborators from the Centre for Coastal Studies in Provincetown (MA, USA) confirmed that one of the individuals was the well-known Mira, an adult male. The other whale, H849, is a known St. Lawrence whale, who appeared to be benefitting from the foraging technique. Could St. Lawrence humpback whales adopt bubblenet feeding?
