Why Did Crystal Pepsi Disappear In the 90s?

- Weird History Food is opening up a can of History on Crystal Pepsi. What’s better than regular Coke? Clear Coke, of course! Or, at least that’s what a majority of the top soda brands in the US thought back in the early '90s. Leading the "Clear Cola Craze" was PepsiCo., which released the first of many clear cola beverages, with their aspirational hit Crystal Pepsi. Anyone who grew up in the 1990s is likely to recall the suspiciously pure-looking soda, and its just-as-curious departure from stock shelves nationwide. So, what really happened to Crystal Pepsi, and the clear-cola movement that succeeded it?

I drank Crystal Pepsi all the time before it disappeared. It was like the best taste ever to my ten year old taste buds.
shame i never had the chance to try it. it looks so aesthetic and probably tastes amazing too
I loved it I was just thinking about crystal Pepsi so here I am..
😮😢❤❤❤
Until that aftertaste that lingered 😂
@@Epic_C I Tried it in Late 1992(Chesapeake, VA had gotten it as one of its secret test markets). It tasted EXACTLY like Diet Pepsi, without the Aspartame. Yes, is Aftertaste was bland.
I like it too as a kid
I was so captivated by Crystal Pepsi as a kid. It didn't taste exactly like Pepsi yet was still magic in a bottle to me. Such nostalgia for it.
The problem with branding your drink something like Crystal Pepsi or New Coke is that when people drink it they won't consider the taste and whether they like it or not based on its own merit, but instead immediately compare it to the flavor they know.
True...But if it tastes like sh*t, then there is no argument...
new coke was a marketing ploy causing the sales of classic coke to spike
@@poindextertunes It was also a "Bait N' Switch" to discontinue using Cane Sugar in Coke in North America.
I hadn’t had a Crystal Pepsi since I was about 9 years old, just watching about it makes me want one just to satisfy my curiosity if we’re really missing out on anything.
I had the rerelease almost 10 years ago after never having it initially. Didn't taste like regular Pepsi, it tasted way better.
When they re-released Crystal Pepsi a few years ago, my ex-husband stockpiled on it! I had some of it, but it didn't taste like regular Pepsi to me!
There was a limited release of Crystal Pepsi in Canada in 2022, I got some and did a blind test on myself and there's barely any noticeable difference from regular Pepsi.
The 2016 rerelease tasted even better than the original tbh. This is the only soda I genuinely miss drinking.
Crystal Pepsi was good, but Pepsi Blue was even better 😁
Nah. It used the Same Formula as Diet Pepsi. Just without the Aspartame.
@@Tornado1994 absolutely 💯
It was a pretty transparent gimmick. I think the market just saw right through it.
Clearly. 😁
Just seeing the LA Beast with Crystal Pepsi and how he single-handedly brought it back from oblivion just warms my heart!
I was working at Walmart in 2016 when Crystal Pepsi had its limited rerelease. Me and a few other coworkers swore by the stuff, buying bottles by the dozen to share after unloading trucks, but pretty much nobody bought it but us.
My HS in the mid 90’s had only Chrystal Pepsi left and it appeared they refused to buy any other soda for the vending machine until Chrystal Pepsi was cleared out. Needless to say we went the entire year with only Chrystal Pepsi as our soda option.
My buddies and I were in the Dallas test market. We bought some when it first came out and were at the store to buy some more because we liked it. We mentioned it to some guy while at the store and turned out he was the Pepsi rep who gave us a stack of coupons for free 6 packs. We were drinking it for like two weeks.
I miss crystal pepsi so much! 😭
I remember when I first tried it in 2016, the best Pepsi I ever had, I wish they brought it back.
For me after awhile it just tasted like chemicals then I found Rc cola tasted just the same, then I became diabetic;-;
I do too.
I also wish Pepsi had made a Zero Sugar version of Crystal Pepsi as well.
I miss both Crystal Pepsi and Holiday Spice Pepsi.
I found Crystal Pepsi in a convenience store on Hollywood Blvd in Los Angeles in 2017. And it was as amazing as I remembered. 😁😁
Canada brought it back like 2 years ago. I have to admit I bought tons of it
Yeah I remember that I was f****** pissed they didn't bring it in the US that year like they were supposed to. Everyone should be able to have it
I remember drinking Crystal Pepsi both the cola and citrus ones at lunch time in High School back in the 90s when soda machines were available to students and snack machines with candy bars.
In Germany we had Crystal Pepsi in "PLUS" Stores .. in 1993 i was around 13-14 and i loved it. It was a bit more expensive (i think 10-20p a Can) but that didn't bothered me much as a Kid. Also i loved it if my Mom send me to Grocery shopping to PLUS as a Kid cause i always grabbed a Can of it and set it on the Bill. My mom checkt the Receipt and was silently grinning.
I always just think of SNL's parody of these that they did around Thanksgiving. Crystal Gravy.
Good video as always
I own the world's largest crystal pepsi collection. Anything and everything you can imagine that was merchandise for crystal pepsi I got it. It's very simple I see a crystal pepsi video.... I click.
My grandmother, who we lived with, wouldn't let me drink this growing up. She thought something was wrong with it. But I'd always get one when I wasn't around her.
I LOVED crystal pepsi. It was my favorite!
I was about 13 when Crystal Pepsi first came out. I was able to buy it out of the pop machine at school when they had vending machines at the time. It didn't taste anything like a regular Pepsi.
That is cool, I have never seen one in a vending machine before!
I was turning 10 in November 1992. They had some at Food Lion in Chesapeake,VA and Mom got me a 6 Pack. It tasted like Diet Pepsi. I remember the Really Weird Aftertaste.
I loved this stuff!
I have a crystal Pepsi on my shelf. I’m so happy you put LA beast on this.
i loved crystal pepsi so much! i can't understand all the hate surrounding it
I got some Crystal Pepsi from Shopko when they brought it back. Liked it more than standard pepsi tbh
I was a kid in Dallas when Crystal Clear Pepsi came out. It was fire. I hated regular Pepsi but Crystal Clear Pepsi tasted completely different.
I was obsessed with this back then!❤
6:21 Great to see those Cool Spots again for the 7-up commercials!
I remember crystal Pepsi. I thought it was pretty good but apparently I was the only one.
My problem with the remake of Crystal Pepsi was that it wasn't the original formula. OG Crystal Pepsi didn't have any caffeine. The caffeine addition gave it more of a bite that the original didn't have and didn't taste as smooth and refreshing as I remembered. They botched the relaunch too as far as I'm concerned..
Glad to see my crystal Pepsi collection grace your video! Great stuff, I didn’t know about 7up clear cola! I’ll have to scour the internet to flag down a bottle!😂 😎
I still have a Crystal Pepsi magnet from 1992!
I dont want crystal Pepsi to return. I want Pepsi Blue dammit.
BRING BACK THE BERRY SODAS
Thank you for showing the SNL Crystal Gravy parody.
I live in Northern Ireland and I remember trying Tab Clear once as a kid... It tasted like CRAP ! Probably cos Tab itself was awful...
I really liked Crystal Pepsi when they revived it - the original was before my time. If they’d put it in cans like regular Pepsi, I’d have got it way more often, and it would have replaced the standard stuff for me.
I used to think this exact same thing, but then a buddy of mine pointed out that hiding a soda whose gimmick was its appearance in an opaque can didn't make a lot of sense. I still think the sales would have justified the packaging though!
good video
Has anyone sent this to the LA Beast yet??
Tried this back in the day then heard Pepsi was releasing it again but said meh because it's only in small bottles & cost $2.50.
Even though it was a bit before my time, I'd imagine that people's brains were fixed with the image of cola being brown that a clear varient might have played a mindfuck with us.
Could you do one on vernors it’s a Michigan native pop that is found elsewhere but extremely popular here in the mitten state and it was created by a doctor who actually served in the civil war
the story goes, he either made it prior to the war and the time it sat aged it to perfection or he made it after the war either way he was said to be extremely strict on how it was sold even down the to machines that made the carbonated water for it
It would be cool to see a video on a local commodity in my state
Edit: I was wrong about the exclusivity of the drink it is found outside Michigan but not as popular I should’ve known especially since I know you can get koegel’s hotdogs(another Michigan icon)outside of Michigan it is my mistake
As a Michigander that grew up on Vernors, and now live in Texas, it is possible to find it all over the country. Kinda like Faygo. It is not as popular but it exists.
@@patrickaker4380 oh cool thanks for that info
Digging the crystal gravy clip.
Thanks for useful and valuable video as always ❤❤❤
Watching those ads made me wonder how much of my childhood was influenced by cocaine.
8 likes but only one view? I dont get it
I had Crystal Pepsi once when I was a kid on New Year's Eve 1993. I remember liking it, but I wasn't available to have another one again. 😢
This and the green hi c were the goat 90s drinks.
In the summer of 1992, I was on a backpacking trip at Philmont with the Boy Scouts. When we arrived back at base camp, there were all these Pepsi trucks test marketing Crystal Pepsi.
Rock n Roll and Cola Wars, I can’t take it anymore!
We didn’t start the fire-Billy Joel 😊
i worked at pizza hut during the initial release and we had a special where if you ordered 2 pizzas you got a free bottle of that stuff. at the end of every shift we usually had about 10 or 20 bottles of it that had been refused by the customer on delivery and brought back. we couldn't give that stuff away it was just gross tasting mostly and didn't stay carbonated very long either.
I remember crystal pepsi in its infancy, December 14, 1992, I was drawn into this clear cola phantasmagoria. But now that I look back on it all, what the hell was I thinking?!
Every time i hear that one Van Hagar song, i think of that first crystal pepsi commercial 😂
just doing a marathon on the videos with the female narrator
i really appreciate the difference in both of their narrating styles und the equally good information thats given out, its what keeps me subscibed to the channel
keep going!
bring it back, Pepsi - it's the only drink of yours I want anywhere near my mouth
I miss Crystal Pepsi!
The details about Crystal Pepsi in this video were so crystal clear.
Man, I miss Crystal Pepsi. I was so happy when it hit the shelves again in 2016. Too bad it didn’t last.
Ahhh yes, the good old days when companies competed for our business instead of colluding to hike up prices
0:01 That reminds me of the tv series Blockbuster (2022).
Keith, from Our 80s Life, used to work for Blockbuster.
I saved an empty bottle from that last time Crystal Pepsi was available. Just for nostalgia's sake.
Crystal Pepsi popped up in a Kroger near me and I tried it, and I loved it so much I ended up buying several bottles every time I went and wished there were six packs available.
I don't recall ever drinking Crystal Pepsi but I sorely miss Pepsi Blue.
I would LOVE to try Crystal Pepsi
Weirdly enough Coke sells clear coke in Japan.
Crystal Pepsi should stick around for the rest of the 90's. 😀👍
There was a limited release about 4-5 years ago where some markets got a supply of Crystal Pepsi. I immediately bought a bottle upon seeing it and rather prefer it to regular Pepsi, but not even close to Coca-Cola.
Man I remember during the Crystal Pepsi 2016 rerelease me and my roommates drank it religiously. We were so bummed when our supply finally ran out.😢😢😢
I loved crystal pepsi so much
I totally played that 7UP game for Nintendo.
"Make 7
Up Yours" 😅
I don't drink those sodas, but it was a fun time.
I remembered really liking Crystal Pepsi when I was a kid and at some point drinking it a weird little flip switched in my head and then I didn't like the flavor anymore. Like I "realized" that there was a different taste in it (I could have easily just convinced myself there was something different in it to make it clear which made my kid brain go "ew taste bad") and couldn't drink it anymore.
I loved Crystal Pepsi.
i remember when it came back out a few years ago
The best thing about Crystal Pepsi was the Crystal Gravy commercial SNL did.
I first had Crystal Pepsi while on break during jury duty.
They were guilty.
Brad Jones would approve of this vid!
Also, I vote for 7Up Gold.
I loved Crystal Pepsi they should bring it back and soon.
It came back a couple years ago.
I want it NOW!
I was addicted to this in high school. It has a ton of sugar in it.
Crystal Pepsi was the only version of "the P word" that we allowed in our house when I was a kid. Dr Pepper was #1, Coke was #2, and Sprite and 7Up were interchangeably #3. But, when Crystal Pepsi came out, I decided to try it and I got the rest of my family to try it. We actually liked it and I was sad when they discontinued it.
I loved when they brought it back in 2016! Wish they'd bring it back again.
Growing up in the 90s, Crystal Pepsi was very much part of my childhood.
Also going on during the 90s that would be an excellent future video topic…the Ice Beer Wars. It was even more competitive than the clear cola wars, with one brand even going so far as to sabotage their chief rival’s launch of a strong ice beer just so they could launch their own with no competition.
I remember drinking this stuff but do not remember the taste😂.
i thought it was more because most the soda companies had an issue of people taking empty or half empty bottles and filling them with clear liquors mainly vodka and taking them into places there where not supposed to have them
I got a case of crystal pepsi and I never opened it so it went bad
Hmmm 🤔 maybe if we’re lucky it’ll come back and I’ll get to try it 😅
Honestly, my introduction to Crystal Pepsi was the YTP by noisepuppet.
Is the baby in the Van Halen superbowl commercial the same one on the album cover of 1984? 4:04
I wish theyd bring it back :(
Crystal Pepsi NEEDS TO COME BACK!! It should have never went away in the first place.
I had a few bottles of crystal Pepsi in 2016 or 17. It tasted like Pepsi
3:46 The Dallas Cowboys played the Buffalo Bills and won the Super Bowl both years I was in junior high (in 1993 & 1994).
but you forgot that crystal pepsi came back in 2021 or something and i had a chance to drink it for the first and only time
When ghey brought it back a couple years ago, i could not imagine why people had such a problem with it
I drank Crystal Pepsi pretty avidly when it was relaunched (same with the 2021 run of Pepsi Blue) and honestly adored it. I was also a Surge kid so I must have a taste for sodas that didn’t crack the market.
I drank Crystal Pepsi twice as a kid and immediately got strep throat after both time. I never had this beverage a third time
Please tell us about Orbitz drinks.
They should bring it back periodically. Like the McRib
I worked for Pepsi then. I was a delivery driver who brought product into the store. It was also around the time they thought Pepsi was putting syringes in the cans. Spokes people then were Michal Jackson (fire in his hair), Cindy Crawford and Ray Charles. Fun times working for a national icon like Pepsi
