- What’s better than regular Coke? Clear Coke, of course! Or, at least that’s what a majority of the top soda brands in the US thought back in the early '90s. Leading the "Clear Cola Craze" was PepsiCo., which released the first of many clear cola beverages, with their aspirational hit Crystal Pepsi. Anyone who grew up in the 1990s is likely to recall the suspiciously pure-looking soda, and its just-as-curious departure from stock shelves nationwide. So, what really happened to Crystal Pepsi, and the clear-cola movement that succeeded it?

I'll never forget Crystal Pepsi not cause I liked it but for a totally weird different reason.
I was like 13-14yrs old and on line at a grocery store check out where you see all those weird magazines filled with all kinds of fake stories. I was reading one about how to become rich. It told you to do some weird motions around your face making little crosses with your fingers. So I do it as a joke. On our way out the store we were passing a vending machine with Crystal Pepsi in it. I hit the button while walking by and a Crystal Pepsi actually popped out! I always thought that magazine was true and I waisted the power on a free Crystal Pepsi lol

I remember when they brought Crystal Pepsi back for a limited time back in 2016. I got at least 6 bottles of this and loved it.
I freaking HOARDED ENTIRE BOTTLES of the stuff, for weeks, because I knew it would only be temporary. Thanks to that foresight, I drank Crystal Pepsi until well into 2017 (even though the deal stopped after August 2016, where I live).
I only wish I could make the stuff myself.

I hoarded it during the re-release, and drank it for my birthday and Christmas. Sadly, some of the bottles I kept outlasted their shelf life, and deteriorated, though not to the point of the 20-something year old bottle that made Kevin Strahle sick.
Crystal Pepsi and a Dominator from Domino's at a friend's slumber birthday party where I had to sleep uncomfortably on the concrete floor. Those were the days.

I got to try it back in 2016 and I really liked it. I mean the fact that it tastes just like a pepsi and doesn’t stain your teeth was a massive selling point for me.
It does not taste like Pepsi at all, most of you are too young to remember but the taste was far different. The man who invented crystal Pepsi even admitted it was made in a very different way.

lol. I was a senior in college when the original stuff came out. The 2016 Crystal pepsi tasted nothing like the 1992 version. The 92 version was really sweet...like diabetes sweet.
i have a weird neighbor who presumably hoards this stuff for some reason. occasionally there'll just be like a dozen empty crystal pepsi cases on his curb on trash day

I loved this stuff as a kid. Bummed never got to have the brief reintroduced edition few years ago. Remember the Super Bowl commercial too !!! The 90’s what a time to grow up in. 🖤🙏🏻😎
I actually got to try the reintroduced edition, in my opinion it tasted better than the original. Probably because they had a couple decades to perfect the formula.
The 90s were great. I was born in the 80s, I was 7 when the 90s started, and came of age right at the end of them.
I was a teen in the 90s. I even remember the Crystal Pepsi commercial very well. Everytime I hear the song Right Now by Van Halen I always think of Crystal Pepsi.

I could listen to the narrator talk about paint drying, his voice is incredibly satisfying to listen to.
Then I highly recommend Simon Whistler, from "Geographics." That guy's voice is so wonderful to listen to, I could listen to him narrate the Holy Bible for four hours, and not be angry.

Me too. I was furious at Pepsi for a couple of years after they discontinued it, and even more furious at Coke when I found out a few years later that they had sabotaged Crystal Pepsi. I refused to drink Coke products for most of my teens as a result.
@@DamonNomad82 and here in the present my dad is furious with Coca-Cola for their involvement of the All Star MLB being moved to Colorado! Yet he won't buy Pepsi products either! He usually buys RC colas anyway!

Crystal Pepsi had flavoring from either cloves or cinnamon added to it, which gave it a strong aftertaste. I was ticked that Pepsi sabotaged their new product, because I would have been a steady customer.

A few years back, they did a limited re-release of Crystal Pepsi. Glad I got to try it (never tried it when it first came out), but it honestly wasn't much to write home about

Oh how I miss my crystal pepsi!! I was stoked when they rereleased it. And then all of a sudden heart broken when they snatched it right back.
This one kind of made me fell old. I can still remember when they put everything in glass bottles and then switched to plastic. The pics reminded of them, I don’t think I’ve thought about it since I was kid.

My dad once brought home a bottle of these and shared it with me. It felt quite magical to be honest. LOL like so many things as a young kid, it really felt special and intriguing. It felt so special because shortly after that you never saw crystal pepsi again and it's probably the only time i ever drank it. Still thinking of it. The 90s were quite experimental with colors. Green Ketchup, white chocolate, clear pepsi. colorful hologram stickers and neon paint :) *nostalgia tingle*

SNL nailed it when they made a spoof commercial for "Crystal Gravy," a clear goo being poured on mashed potatoes, meat, and stuffing.

I had it when it came back for a short time in the 2016. Kinda wish I was around when it originally came out. I love the LA Beast though, the fact that he brought it back, dope as hell

Funny you posted this. I consider myself the crystal pepsi super fan, I have probably the largest crystal pepsi collection in the United States if not the world. Complete with German, and french crystal Pepsi's, a real crystal pepsi igloo, clocks, glasses, pins, cups, hats, every size of bottle they ever made. I even own the original Crystal Pepsi Prototype bottle presented to Pepsi executives with paperwork to prove it. Also own several sample bottles never sold. As well as a couple misprint bottles. Their are almost 100 pieces in my Crystal Pepsi collection. It is my pride and joy.
The new release tasted so much better. I would continue to buy it if it was still available.

I recall thinking Diet Crystal Pepsi tasted pretty good and felt even less syrupy than a regular Diet Pepsi. I'd like to see it come back.

I’m sure they have something equivalent to it here in the US still. Mountain Dew always has a bunch of berry flavors. I don’t mind regular Mountain Dew once in awhile, but otherwise I prefer the regular, or original flavors for soda. I like the actual flavor of some of that other stuff, but it’s just too sweet for me to drink more than a sip or 2 of. Lol 😂

That’s funny. My comment is I don’t drink soda because it’s corn syrup and acid, both poisons. If I’m going to take in a poisonous product, I might go for a donut or Mac n cheese, but certainly not soda!

Caramel coloring, which is used for cola, isn't artificial.
the brown color is the natural color of colas, clear cola has more artificial additives to remove the color

I liked Crystal Pepsi, first time around and when they re-released it! I wish they had it all the time or at least once a year, like the McRib. I remember SNL made a parody of Crystal Pepsi, Crystal Gravy. It's still online and still funny.
I wasn’t alive in the 90s yet but when I was 15 and going through my vaporwave phase in 2016, the re-release of Crystal Pepsi was so satisfying for the nostalgia I for some reason felt for a time I had never experienced. It was absolutely delicious

I absolutely loved crystal pepsi back in '92 (sacramento test market). I remember when our junior high got our soda machine in the gym and you had to be there immediately after it was stocked or you wouldnt get any. We'd all pump our lunch money into that box and i would (pre-braces with crooked teeth) bite thru the side of the can like teen wolf and spray the stuff all over the place. A few years ago when it came back i managed to get a couple 20oz bottles of crystal pepsi from the only place i could find that carried it, cvs. I would still drink crystal pepsi if it were available, but sadly its gone again. Thanks for the nostalgia trip.

@@vipergtsmre I loved Crystal Pepsi at age 10. In my teens, I tried Orbitz and, while it didn't taste bad the texture was revolting! On youth trips, we used to use bottles of Orbitz for dares, or as punishment for anyone who lost a high-stakes game of cards!

They should have clear cola for mixed drink appearances. Huge opportunities there.
But it's usually the darker liquors used in cola mixed drinks. Like rum or whiskey. I'd imagine a clear Cola and whiskey would have an appearance similar to ginger ale. Soda mixed drinks aren't typically known for showy appearances like true cocktails.

Crystal Pepsi came back in ~ 2012/2013 but it was only around for a little while. It was so good, I miss drinking it
I never drank regular (non diet) soda (still don’t) but I was obsessed with Tab’s pink energy drink. It was still sold around 2006-2007 but then it disappeared. I loved that stuff!
There was this other short-lived soda called “OK” came out in 1993 with a distinct black color can, and an interesting marketing campaign where you call a certain number to hear funny “ok” messages. IIRC it was a Coke product. I liked it and tasted like an orange based soda with a hint of coke and 7-up.
I was thinking about OK Soda when he mentioned Providence as a test market for Crystal Pepsi. I was going to College in Providence when it was a test market for OK Soda.

I remember liking it enough to try it a few times, but not enough to notice when it was discontinued.
There were a few other clear sodas at the time, but maybe not nationwide. Snapple had a "True Root Beer" and clear cherry soda before the Pepsi and Tab offerings.
The diet version was somehow better- funny thing is I didn’t even buy it when it came back out a few years ago
