Craziest Themed Restaurants From the 90s

- Weird History Food is taking you back to the 1990s to see all the sweet, themed restaurants of the decade. The '90s were the era of tight-rolled jeans, grunge rock, and Beanie Babies, but the decade was also home to the themed restaurant craze. Many were short-lived enterprises, despite the presence of celebrity entrepreneurs. But a few still carry on today, even if they feel like something of a throwback to a different time.

"The US has no rainforests"
*laughs in Pacific Northwest*
The U.S. DOES have a rainforest, just not a tropical one. The Pacific Northwest is considered a rain forest by most, if not all, scientists of various disciplines.
I mean. Hawaii is also a tropical rainforest
@@robertmittoniii5427 you’re not wrong, but because it isn’t part of the contiguous U.S. a lot of people don’t count it. I’m 50/50 on whether to count it or not.
Incorrect it has one in Puerto Rico El yunque national Park.
Temperate rainforests in NY in Catskills and Adirondack’s as well
Tropical is one of the main characteristics of a rain forest... So therefore there are no rainforest in the continental us...
This was a fun video and huge bonus points for the Eddy Burback footage
That's who I immediately thought of when I saw this video appear on my feed 😂
I went to Mars 2112 in August 2001. It was so cool and one of the most memorable experiences from visiting NYC. Couldn’t for the life of me remember the name of restaurant so thank you for the nostalgia!!!
It was fun but I recall the food was absolutely horrible.
I love that at the Rainforest cafe they use clip from Eddy Burback trip to every single Rainforest cafe location. That trip almost broke him 😂
Something about those Rainforest Cafe chciken tenders ALWAYS hit the spot
Submarine themed restaurant the jokes write themselves
Every sandwich shop: “our subs don’t implode” 😏
Pretty sure one is in a Saweetie song 😂 …… it’s called go to town 😆
@@EntertainMeTV not the kind of joke I was thinking 😅😂
The irony was they really wanted high quality sandwiches served in a very gimmicky eatery.
A flavor implossion
Shaq can eat anywhere the heck he wants to!
If I was a restaurant manager and Shaq showed up with his big appetite, he'd get the best table in the house. One Shaq sized meal could cover the staff's salary for the night.😊
Agreed!!!
Uh... Don't American waiters have a regular salary...?
I'm really glad that you're finally mentioning Dive!
The funny thing about WWF New York/The World is that it wasn't the only wrestling themed eatery out there. Over at Excalibur in Las Vegas was the WCW Nitro Grill... Which would have had Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan themed menu items, ironically.
Im stunned you didn't mentioned Jekyll And Hyde Club NYC? The oldest horror themed resturant on the east coast.
Probably too obscure for this channel
Definitely did not expect my favorite restaurant as a kid to be on here... Space Aliens, nor did I know the one I went to was the first one ever
Good content. Entertaining.
Little Caesars in Michigan in the late 80s was awesome. It was a giant playground and many interactive things everywhere, plus costumed characters. Magic Time Machine was one of my all time favorite places to go as a kid and preteen.
I was actually an employee at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company Maui when it first opened
Having Captain Crunch Chicken Strips at Planet Hollywood as a kid was definitely a highlight of my childhood. To the point where now as an adult I periodically will make my own similar but a bit tweaked version and anyone who ive ever had try them always start out thinking it will be weird or not taste good end up enjoying them.
Its the mix of sweet and savory flavors that go so well together that it makes you wonder why more restaurants don't try similar recipes.
That does sound good!
One of the Rain Forest Cafe locations now has a rain forest themed dark ride connected to the Rain Forest location.
Another tip for future subjects is Casa Bonita. Every location of Casa Bonita has been closed down but very recently The Casa Bonita location near Denver Colorado has reopened under new ownership. The people from South Park are the new owners.
The Rainforest You’re Talking About Is In Galveston, Texas
Dive was located in the Century City mall in LA in 1993 when I worked at the Willams-Sonoma in the same mall. We went to Dive when it first opened to check it out and the food was so bad we all left feeling “seasick”😂
Anyone remember Discovery Zone??
I loved discovery zone as a kid. I think the channel defunctland has a video about DZ
@@TurbulenttJuicei believe you mean the Club Disney episode. although he does mention DZ in that episode. Bright Sun Films has a video on DZ
@@TurbulenttJuice Ditto for me. I went there as a kid too.
“Despite the fact that the US had no rainforests “
Seattle: collective gasp
Regarding Bubba Gump Shrimp Company: They BLEW IT when they chose beverage distributors!
There's a scene in the movie where Gump drinks a lot...and I mean A LOT...of Dr. Pepper. Yes...this is before the scene where he tells JFK he needs to use the facilities. Problem is...Dr. Pepper is NOT sold at BGSC. You'd think they would do so and include that little detail, even if it's a minor one!
Yeah but not everyone paid that much attention to detail when it comes to this stuff
@@BeyondDaX True…but I wonder if the makers of Dr. Pepper pitched a fit. That scene felt VERY much like product placement!
I loved Mars 2112! My friends parents took us there as kids and it was so amazing as a young child. I remember waking down the stairs and going in and being in awe! Another one I remembered had huge giant chairs and couches to sit in, but I forgot the name! And of course Jekyll and Hyde was so cool with way the walls opened! Themed restaurants were awesome! Although I can’t tell you how any of the meals were… I’m sure we liked other places better in NYC.
That place looked neat! Wish we could've gone, kinda gives Star Trek vibes lol.
Lieutenant Dan Icecream!!! It’s right there!!
That Aliens place looks like a real life Pizza Planet from Toy Story lol...too bad most of them closed :(
I ate at the Bubba Gump restaurant in Monterey in 1998. I remember they had the check for Bubba's family on display. As a kid I thought it was pretty neat.
Disney parks in FL had probably a dozen themed restaurants in the 90's. A 50's style diner theme. A movie Monster theme. Rainforest was at Animal Kingdom.
@@ClementineLovee was always a memorable experience for me, too!
The Rainforest In Animal Kingdom Is Still Open
I've been to a Rainforest Cafe, Bubba Gumps (in New Orleans), and a few other themed restaurants (including several Hard Rock Cafes). One of my favorites was the T-Rex Cafe, which is owned by the same people who own Rainforest Cafe. There was a huge T-Rex at the entrance, several large aquariums, and lots of dinosaur themed items. The best part has to be the Build a Dino store, which is a spin off of Build a Bear workshop.
"The fact the US has no rainforests" er? What about Puerto-Rico? Hawaii? Last time I looked they were still in the US.
I wonder if this channel watched the "I ate at every Margaritaville/Rainforest Cafe" lol
Out of the ones on your list, I have only been to the Rainforest Cafe. However, I have also been to The Cave, The Mai Kai, Capone's and The Bubble Room. Those were a lot of fun. In The Cave, each table was a private alcove that looked like you were sitting in your own private cave. The waiters and waitresses were dressed like cave people. The dishes were very meat based. The Mai Kai looked like you were at a Polynesian destination and all the dishes were Polynesian style. There were live shows and music. Capone's is set up like a speakeasy. When you make your reservation, you are given a password and a special knock. When you get to the door, you have to do the secret knock, a little window slides open like you see in the old-time movies & then you say the password. The waiters and waitresses are all dressed straight out of prohibition era. There is a stage show from that time with music and dance. The police even come and raid the joint but get paid off (or at least they accepted the bribe the night I was there). The Bubble Room was a very eclectic mish-mash of weirdness. The waiters and waitresses are dressed as Bubble Scouts. The restaurants have a couple of different small rooms and each room has a different look and theme to it. Unfortunately, it was hurt by hurricane Ian and is currently being restored. It is being rebuilt though. It is a Captiva Island staple to see though. I absolutely love their bubble bread. I wish I had the recipe!
We had a themed McDonald's where you could have your birthday in the caboose of a train. Oh the memories...
"But instead of whining about it like you..." Lol! 🤣😂🤣😂
I would love to see a history video on Steven Spielberg
A+ video!
Supercool collection of themed restaurants!
Proving once again that you never allow your children to decide what you’re going to eat.
I love themed restaurants. I feel like businesses these days are too cheap to invest into fun ambiences like that anymore. You'll see a place pop up from time to time, but its rare.
@13:35 That crab and shrimp boil (on the left) is one of South Carolina's most traditional meals.
I've been to the Rainforest Cafe a few times when I was a young girl and, out of all the times I've been there, I've only had the places signature dessert, the Volcano, once.
Should have had Bugaboo Creek in there because my mom took me to one and it was one of the most bizarre food experiences I have ever had. They had real wall mounted animals all over the place and hidden around were ones that weren't real, but animatronic and they would talk and move around... very unsettling.
I have seen that alien restaurant in Bismarck. I need a life.
How did we get all these weird themed resturants but NOT ONE *Pizza Planet* shame
The Space Aliens in Bismarck is also still open... Idk why you said "There's still one in Fargo" the OG one still stands 💯
I remember visiting Planet Hollywood in Niagara Falls and Hard Rock in Toronto before they both shut down and closed up, I still enjoy walking through the gift shop of Rainforest Cafe in Niagara Fall whenever I visited
That Hulk Hogan joke though... 🤦♂
I've lived in North Dakota for almost 47 years (44 in Fargo and three in Bismarck). Imagine my surprise when I heard Space Aliens restaurant on here! I've been to the Fargo one a few times. It is a very unique and fun restaurant.
Been to Planet Hollywood and Rainforest Cafe, and they were okay. But most of these themed restaurants were just a way to sell mediocre food at excessively high prices. And they ruined what was a unique and cool concept that the Hard Rock Cafe developed on its own.
Great Video! I ate at two Rainforest for years and Bubba Gumps, in Florida. Great places. I now live by a real rain forest in South America.
This video: "... despite the fact that the US has no rainforests."
Washington state: ...
I want to open a Mongolian Stir Fry called something like Dragon Bowl, that is themed around Dragon Ball and the massive amounts of food that Goku eats.
Apparently the US does have some rainforest so maybe a slight correction. The Tongass National Forest is in Alaska.
No mention of Medieval Times? Missed out on a couple of Cable Guy references 😅.
Wasn't that made in the late 80s or something?
The Lt. Dan dish should have been something with ice cream
I spent my childhood on Long Island and was also obsessed with Broadway musicals as a kid. Every time we went into the City, I begged my parents to take me to Mars 2112. They only obliged once. 🤣
@1:46 That icon is from the 1902 film A Trip To The Moon by Georges Méliès. (Awesome film!)
The music video "Tonight Tonight" by The Smashing Pumpkins (1996) was based off the film.
Parts of the film and Georges Méliès's biography are in the film Hugo (2011).
The Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant we went to didn't have Dr. Pepper and that was upsetting.
Thats because tom hanks doesnt drink dr pepper
@@DavidS22003 But Forrest does!!!
Mars 2112 was the absolute BEST. Food was very mid though. But my foster sisters had their sweet 16 there. The elevator down to the restaurant was a ride that felt like you were going on a space ship to mars and it was so fun! I miss when restaurants were themed.
Do wildest things we have made edible, like underwear.
How can you deny Shaq entry to an space/alien theme restaurant when you have people walking around in costumes???? I can definitely see why that joint closed.
Of course there's not lt. dan cakes, he likes ice cream!
I'm surprised they didn't mention the Motown Cafe in NYC.
The US does have a few rainforest: Hoh Rain Forest in Washington State being one of my favorite.
Ironic thing to say about Stephen Dorff considering he was in the audience during the runway scene in ZOOLANDER 🤦♀
I figured Lieutenant Dan would inspire an ice cream flavor. 😂
good video
Last time I checked Hawaii has rain forests, so I guess the US does have rain forests.
@12:54 Fashion Cafe, what a brilliant idea!
I ate lunch at the wwf restaurant lol. It was really cool! Al snow just happened to be there eating lunch. So we got to see him! Good memories.
We had this Jekyll & Hyde club in Chicago in the 90’s that I took my first girlfriend to eat. It was pretty wild
Space Aliens needs a Roswell NM location yet ones in North Dakota!?
I've been to Bubba Gump's in Orlando several times. It's one of the few restaurants that I like.
3:11 she said 2003 but we see 2023
Yeah, "2023" was the wrong year number we see. At least the narrator is correct.
Maybe there should be a Living Dead Doll restaurant.
Old as it looks, i love the cafe in Grapevine Mills 😊
i wonder if more of these would have survived if the food was actually good. Most chain restaurants serve pre-frozen and then microwaved meals.
I ate at most of those places.
DIVE had the best food, in my opinion.
I'm sad that the theme restaurant fad has ended, the gift shops were always the best part.
Totally Agree! ❤😊
The only themed restaurant I have eaten at is Chuck E Cheese
Rainforest Cafe is a classic 💚🤎
but but but… Margaritaville 🥺
Contrary to your claim, the Olympic Rain Forest is in the United States. Just because it's temperate and not tropical doesn't mean it's not in the club!!!
Neat I guess.
@@BeyondDaX clever, I guess
Fun episode! I wish the Dive restaurant was still around, that sounds so cool! 💦🐠🐟I remember going to Planet Hollywood when I was little and seeing a statue of Arnold in his terminator outfit! It was crazy! 😧Always loved Rainforest Cafe and Bubba Gumps! I have been to both of them multiple times mostly at Mall of America since we went there a lot for vacation! I remember seeing the animatronic gator at the entrance at Rainforest Cafe and thinking it was real since it seemed real life like! Great memories! 🦐🦎🦍Good to know there is a good amount left of the restaurants in the US, definitely will go to them again! Great memories! 😊💗💗💗🤩🤩🤩🥳🥳🥳
In the 70s, there was a theme restaurant in St. Louis called Noah's Ark. We stopped there several times on road trips from KC to Detroit when I was a kid.
Omg I ate at Mars 2112 my first time in NYC and I was living for it 😂. I was going to impress everyone in middle school by eating there I thought lmao. There was a little “ride” simulation you could take before you were seated. The food was just ok but they were really creative with the whole experience.
I want to open a Mongolian Stir Fry called something like Dragon Bowl, that is themed around Dragon Ball Z and the massive amounts of food that Goku eats, (which seems to be Mongolian Stir Fry.)
I worked at rainforest cafe in Disney animal kingdom. Everyone was high and drunk and eating pills all day. That place was always busy af.
A restaurant with 2112 in its name had me thinking it was Rush-themed.
Im really surprised that House of Blues didnt make this list. It was literally founded by one of the hard rock founders and a movie star.
Anyone remember Marvel Mania? From Universal Studios Hollywood.
I had or have a martini glass from Fashion Cafe. LOL
Rainforest Cafe always seemed like a cool idea when I was a kid but every time I forgot about the fact that they smelled like damp rot which kind of killed the dining atmosphere
I have not ever been to any of these themed restaurants and there is a Rainforest Cafe in Grapevine Mills Mall in Grapevine, Texas
😅 Wow! It was interesting to see Space Aliens make the list. I went there a few times when I lived in North Dakota.
Yes, people actually live there 😂👽
10:07 In the part about the Rainforest Cafe, you quip "despite the fact that the US has no rainforests". Actually, in Washington State, (where I live,) there is a rainforest! The Hoh Rainforest lies on the west side of the Olympic National Park.
10:45 Eddy!!
Never got the appeal of themed restaurants. Always seemed like an excuse to sell overpriced mediocre food
Gotta sell their overpriced and mediocre food some how, attach something people like and you’ve hit a gold mine until it dies down
90s excess mostly.
They were really popular in the 90s as seen in this video. NASCAR had restaurants, movies had restaurants WWF and WCW had restaurants Nickelodeon etc it certainly was fun when we were kids 😂😂
10:06 The Olympic National Forest would like a word with you...
Hey man, not cool making fun of Schamburg Illinois 😂
I remember the Magic Time Machine, in Dallas, once we sat in a school bus, and another time, I think, we were in a giant box of crayons.
Which is why the best format for a specific theme restaurant is if it's done in pop-up style. Open only for limited time but still profitable nonetheless.
The US does have rainforests, they are just temperate not tropical...
The only one I ever heard of was Planet Hollywood but I never want to one
As a Rush fan, I always enjoyed walking past Mars 2112.
I remember going to a Planet Hollywood (once) in FL during a highschool school trip. First introduction I guess you could say to a themed restaurant that I had been in (this was back in 1994 so while they were still relatively "new" -- Planet Hollywood that is). Kind of sad that some of these places went under (of course I had read many reviews saying the food at PH wasn't that great in reality and was more or less "average"). The other one that I'm sad to see sort of go south and basically disappear (although not completely yet I don't think) is the Rainforest Cafe. Interesting concept to be honest.
