My Dearly departed Uncle Ray Gonzalez, 82nd Airborne, All Americans, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Company C, was one of the US Soldiers that fought in Sainte Mere Eglise. Uncle Ray said that when he jumped, the plane was so low that he was knocked unconscious, when he awoke he was immediately engaged in hand-to-hand combat. After that he made his way to SME to join with others to take the town it was about 3am. As history tells the story if was fierce fighting, both sides were ordered to fight to the last man. Uncle Ray, born in Mexico then moving to the US as a toddler, then settling in Detroit, in an area referred to as Hell's Kitchen. It was a rough part of Detroit, an area that was impoverished and violent. Uncle Ray was accustomed to danger, yet he confessed there wasn't a moment he wasn't scared fighting in Europe. Uncle Ray also learned that like in Detroit, fighting in Europe was kill or be killed. Uncle Ray was a fierce warrior and every Nazi that faced him died. Most Paratroopers although formidable fighters could not kill a wounded or a surrendering enemy Soldier. Uncle Ray had no problem with it, Uncle Rays said, he was so goddamn mad he wanted to kill everything. The morning after SME was secured Paratroopers would bring captured Nazis to Uncle Ray, telling him to; take them back to Head Quarters but there was no Head Quarters. Uncle Ray said; I had to give them my food and water, I said bullshit, so I just let them have it, there was one German Soldier that couldn't have been more than 17 or 18 and he begged me not to shoot him, but I shot him anyways, I still feel so bad about it. Uncle Ray was written about in a book called Beyond Valor and an article in an Airborne Magazine called the General and the Private. Other members of his Company said they were appalled an awed by Uncle Ray because he would shoot wounded Germans on the road side. This is something they wanted to do but couldn't. Uncle Ray on several occasions after being ordered to pull back refused when he found out a buddy was wounded and left behind to wait for Medics. Uncle Ray would drop his knapsack and under shelling, heavy machine gun and sniper fire would find his buddies and bring them back or get help for them, he would stay by them until help arrived. Uncle Ray fought in Normandy, Bastogne, in the Ardennes, Market Garden and throughout. Uncle Ray was awarded two Silver Stars, one Bronze Star, Two Purple Hearts, and the highest honors from France, Belgium, Denmark and The Netherlands along with other honors. When Uncle Ray returned from the war he became an American Citizen, moved to Cincinnati, became a steel worker and raised his family. God Bless Uncle Ray and all the Soldiers, US, British, Canadian who sacrificed their lives and all those that survived who had to carry the horrors of war throughout their lives.

Riding in those gliders had to some tough guys. It's a one way trip with people shooting at you and then trying to land at a hardly know destination.

General Ted Roosevelt, ADC of the 4th Infantry Division in the jeep on the left at 2:54. Landed with first wave at Utah beach and was awarded the Medal of Honor. He died, of natural causes, about a month after this shot. He named his jeep 'Rough Rider' which you can see a few seconds later.

Good call and good eye. I'm retired U.S. army. The Americans are good soldiers but they are citizen soldiers who volunteered or were drafted. They knew where the front line was. They knew who the bad guys are. None of them carry their weapon the same way. They are all dressed different. They seem sort of unobservant. They are swilling wine for the camera. Complete different picture of the way the U.S.Army operates in the middle east. I'm not judging them.

Of course the thing was that they landed at the incorrect place on Utah beach, which by luck turned out to be better as the point they landed was less defended that the original destination.I have visited Utah beach and it's remarkarble as nothing has changed, looks just like it did on 6th June 1944.
