The quality of these films are amazing, better than what we’re used to seeing from the television days
The every day life of the soldier is so intriguing
Thank you for making them accessible
quite agree
phil brown
I second that Phil.
Many thanks.
I have seen just about every D-Day documentary and this is the first time I've seen this footage. Thanks!
Great film thanks,
The impressions that come across to me about the POW's is while they look uncertain at times they also looked relieved to be out of it and there are more than few smiles. The guards seem to be courteous at least in front of camera. The Italian must have been made up to have been finally been taken out of the war.
5:38 That’s the Dock entrance arch at Southampton in background. Used to read “Southern Railway Docks”, now ABP I think. Herbert Walker Avenue, around Mayflower Park. Think there’s a few bits of Mulberry harbour parts that weren’t required close by today.
8:40 Hiwis or Italians? And what’s happening in the next scene with the big sergeant getting right up into that tall guy’s face, then sending them to stand by the fence? Looks like a bit of aggro.
840 is italians, very unique bustina caps, probably forced laborers. 8:29 is hiwis, Georgians I think from their insignia
Italian prisoners there at the end. Must have been sent to france to do work on the fortifications, or pull guard duty for the Germans.
Lucky soldiers taken prisoner on D-Day. Got to spend the rest of the war in a POW camp rather than die for Der Fuhrer.
Lots of kids....(
I wonder if any of the relatives of the people would recognise any them ?
Question anybody know what the sprayed or painted white loop over the front the the helmets was for at 4.44 never seen this before on any film before ?
One of the Special Engineer Brigades.
Thank you
@@budmeister I’d go further and say 261st Medical Battalion, 1st Engineer Special Brigade - judging by the amount of medical bags and medical armbands being carried by just about everyone on that boat. Also a load of stretchers. They landed on Utah around D-Day or D+1.
At min. 9.36 you can see some Italian soldiers. Maybe pows as forced/slave workers of the germans. Note that they are kept apart from the nazis. At that time the Italian army was co-belligerant with the Anglo-Americans.
82 en 101 AB , paratroop man .
Move that logo and counter,
Spoils the film !!!
all the bravest German divisions, fanatical and experienced, perished in the east, and here children and not Germans, by the end of the war the cowardly opened a second front ...
Mihail - nobody can, or should, forget the suffering and bravery of the Russian people during the Great Patriotic War. However delayed the Second Front was, in the eyes of Stalin, you cannot call the men who ran across Omaha beach, cowardly. It takes nothing away from the Russian soldier, to honour everyone who fought.
For two years (1939 to 1941) the Russians aided Hitler while he invaded most of Europe, selling him oil, grain and other war materials.
