I learned this song by leaning on the stage and watching Jorma play this piece until I could play the whole thing, but that was close to 50 years ago. He plays it rather different now , adding a few layers of sophistication to his wonderful style.
Jorma and Jack at the Filmore East as Hot Tuna-what a trip! Such a pleasure to see him playing still. But when music embroiders and weaves the threads of our lives, we would rather give up breathing to keep the music. Thank you for so many moments of pleasure and joy
First saw him do H Blues in '74 at Alfred U. ... Him and Papa J ... Jack was sick and out of lineup . Jorma sitting in a big old chair and Papa J jammin like they were in their basement . Hooked ever since . God Bless Hottuna ...
I love this guy!Perfect!Genius! He came from another planet.Thank you God,Thank you America,Thank you for opportunity to watching persons like him. What experience!
Jorma and Garcia knew each other since 1962 or 1963 but it’s a shame there is hardly any video of them playing acoustic guitars together. We know they did but not much of that was documented. Oh well.
Ralph McTell did a good version of "Hesitation Blues" on his "8 Frames a Second" LP, released in '68. Worth hearing if you can find it. I saw him perform it in '76 or '77 at a club in Toronto. Every player, quite rightly, develops their own interpretive arrangement usually based on a version, that they really admired or suited their own style. Traditional tunes are merely a starting off point and shouldn't be considered as "dead" music history.
I’ve seen him do this live and different videos here on UA-cam, but this one is outstanding. He seemed like he didn’t want to let the song go. I know I didn’t!
"The son of a State Department official, Jorma Kaukonen, Jr. was born and raised in the Washington D.C. area, with occasional extended trips outside the United States. He was a devotee of rock-and-roll in the Buddy Holly era but soon developed a love for the blues and bluegrass that were profuse in the clubs and concerts in the nation’s capitol. He wanted to take up guitar and make that kind of music himself. Soon he met Jack Casady, the younger brother of a friend and a guitar player in his own right. Though they could not have known it, they were beginning a musical partnership that has continues for over 50 years. Jorma graduated from high school and headed off for Antioch College in Ohio."
My first exposure was in the early 70's at the Academy of Music, downtown Manhattan, midnight shows, with Jack, Papa John, and Sammy Piazza (I think). I remember Jack's solos quite well.
So many artists of 'my era' were a combination of a bit of talent, a lot of luck, and and a style that was deemed 'cool'. Jorma is one of those who has the real musical chops to justify his fame.
I just sit in amazement at his playing. First time I listened to Airplane it was his work the stuck out. I've got to see him in concert someday still...
Fred H I highly recommend you do so too! They are amazing!! Acoustic is so much better than electric but Jorma and Jack rock either way. And yes, I agree. He made Jefferson Airplane so unique with his style of playing. The others just completed the sound.
I live in Arizona and he's on the east coast rest of year it seems. Wishing him good health and hope he swings west of the Rockies in 17'. Nice to find someone who appreciates his music too!
christ, this has zero heart .. yet another watered down version from some white guy .. about as much flavor as iceberg lettuce .. The Rev was playing this with meaning and passion when he was this jag-off's age
Recently visited Fur Peace Ranch and met Jorma and his lovely wife. What genuine nice people. Have always loved Jorma's playing.

My heart hurts at the idea that anyone could ever dislike this.
Easy fix. Ignore them.
I totally agree- they aint right in the head
Love Jorma and Jack ...
Happy 80th birthday Jorma!
Brings back memories of seeing him play an acoustic set followed by an electric set at the Palladium in the city w Jack, Papa John etc. Magic!

Incredible! How does he play that song so calmly now. I play it and my blood pressure goes through the roof.
Learn to relax in life.

Wooden Ships 1970 Airplane-stupendous guitar work. Sears into your soul !

Jorma and Garcia knew each other since 1962 or 1963 but it’s a shame there is hardly any video of them playing acoustic guitars together. We know they did but not much of that was documented. Oh well.

I live in Athens Ohio and I swear Jorma is like the only good thing from the entire region
There is a B&B in Pomeroy owned by Maureen Burns who makes Herbalsage tea. One of the finest persons in the area. I used to live in New Marshfield.

I like how he can play lead rhythm and bass at the same time.
The technique is called "Travis picking"
I can watch great music. Happy days all around
On kitty
My name is Jorma and I met him back stage before
WOW! Love that!

JORMA!!!!!
muy lindo
Yeah....this is just the way I play it too (not).
I've been listening to you for 40 years. Why hasn't any of your magic rubbed off on me yet?
:)
I just sit in amazement at his playing. First time I listened to Airplane it was his work the stuck out. I've got to see him in concert someday still...

've been listening Jorma +40years! :-)))
c'est juste que, comme il existe une "french touch",il existe aussi une "Jorma touch" !
just UNIQUE !
79 years young today
those textures and timbres tho
no words
WOWEE!!!!!!!
DYNAMITE!!!!
If you don't know Jorma you don't know Jack.
Remember this from RedRocks
If you buy the " lesson '' from Homespun ? The tab is NOT compete !! Not a happy purchase
Such an underrated guitar player.
Good Shepard
Trikkejä Kikka?
Segovia Lolita
very underrated guitar player when he plays electric Clapton's got nothing on Jorma.
Indeed. For starterters, Jorma plays fingerstyle, Clapton needs a pick.
Clapton plays finger style without picks. This guy uses a thumb pic as well as finger picks.
Without Jorma and Jack, Jefferson Airplane is Starship. Marty, Paul, and Grace.....yawn....
Jack played with starship
Mick Martin plays this Better
Comment section is whiter than a polar bear’s arse
Yeah, Jorma is wack !! Lol ...
Different styles for different taste, my friend..
Stinks
whoa... must've had an off night? He doesn't play guitar very well here... first video I've seen of him. Not impressed !
Oh gee, how sad, you're not impressed. You have no idea what he's doing.
You are 10 years old and he is in 70s.........fuck off kid
Is that sarcasm ?
Appreciate the style and talent,
Hot Fukin Tuna baby !!!
What is the name of the song? Hear the space and time between the notes. Listen and learn kid(s).
You're high. This is great
Disappointing.
christ, this has zero heart .. yet another watered down version from some white guy .. about as much flavor as iceberg lettuce .. The Rev was playing this with meaning and passion when he was this jag-off's age
It's "polite" - quite so.
He has more heart in his big toe than most every musician we know .
You must play the accordion
At least get some fact correct, davis only to 76 & Kaukonen is 83.
