Just the logic of how a generation works...The 360 and PS3 are last gen, the Xbox One and PS4 are current gen just as the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro are current gen, because all of those consoles are part of the current generation of consoles. Calling things mid, low or high gen would just be confusing. You could go and say the Xbox One and PS4 are last gen and the X and Pro are current gen depending on your view of the current consoles.

it's not amazing tech... the game is being rendered at a higher resolution there's nothing magical about it. It's a very old and basic practice on PC. Hell on PC you can render games at whatever resolution you want.

Well I would rather buy a cheap 720p monitor to get the native scaling of an XBox One or 360 and son't spend 500 bucks on an X, only to later upgrade my TV for also 500. Upscaled 720p on 1080p just looks bad since the pixels don't match up
It depends on your budget if you want to stick to One its not a bad chouce although you could get a 1080p screen they are not expensive and depending on Size and Ratio many show 720p really well
Forza Horizon 2 was ported to X360, but it's target development platform was Xbox One. Forza Horizon was the last in the series which was specifically built for X360.

About the sharp text. My guess, as a game dev, is that the fonts are stored either as actual font files (vectors) and rasterized based on size-on-screen in pixels. (maybe just-in-time or during loading) or they are using a method similar to that used in Source games from Valve using distance field encoding. A technique which can produce almost vector-like results from bitmap assets.
I'm a predominantly PlayStation gamer, and I own an Xbone X. I must say, MS is really treating it's fan with great regard by breathing a new life into these fantastic older titles. Well done Phil Spencer and the rest of the Xbox team!
An free update that makes your game run at full 4k + 16x AF + 4x MSAA. It's incredible what the back-compat team is achieving. Meanwhile people are paying to play a PS2 remaster on the SoupStation 4, what a shame.

I remember a few articles about BC stating Microsoft will make it easier to hav the Original Xbox/Xbox 360 titles (along with Xbox One) with these enhancements being "ported" easily to the next gen Xbox when we reach tht point. So even if PS4 is beating them with exclusives, Xbox is taking them on another way with just sheer library size. I luv revisiting old games from time to time, even more so with them getting enhancements. End of the day, I like having more games and keep playing the ones I do own for years to come, without having to pay a sub service/streaming the old titles with little to no improvements or having to b online to play them. but thts just imo Not hating on PS4 or anything like certain fanyboys.
These XB1X 4K patches for Xbox & Xbox 360 games are fantastic. A real treat. It'd be great if all the existing b/c titles would get this treatment. It can be jarring when one minute I'm playing Witcher 2 at 4K & then play Mafia 2 (great graphics, terrible image quality) afterwards at 720p.
Sony knows about his target public , which they are people looking for newer games and usually they don't care about past games so it's useless to spent money on that.
Just as a heads up guys, Forza Horizon 2 did come out on the 360. Unless you’re referring to Forza Horizon 1 as the last exclusive Forza game to come to the 360. That makes sense then. Awesome video as always :)
Simply INCREDIBLE! The original Horizon looks outstanding! These games almost look and perform too good to be true. THIS is why I got the Xbox One X and I am so glad I did. Is it too much to ask for Forza 4 to get an Xbox One X Enhanced patch? 4 is a long time favorite of mine and the car selection is phenomenal. In the meantime I will be enjoying Horizon 1, 2 AND 3 on my Xbox One X. So many good games to play and so little time. Thanks for the video and keep up the great work!
I am not a dev, but I believe text is being rasterized, or being handled as a vector on the original code that’s why it scales so sharp on 4K!! Amazing tech no doubt!

Yup exactly! Horizon 5 might be better than the first one in terms of content, Horizon 1 is just almost perfect! The setting of Colorado which is very uncommon to be set in the U.S., Soundtrack is just perfect and undisputed in the series, Most importantly the first Horizon had story where you actually have an objective to beat Darius. If only in the next installment they'll relearn Horizon 1 story but more fleshed out.
I updated it yesterday and “Wow” it looks incredible now compared to its original state! I hope they continue to update and inject new life into these older titles. I need some updated Otogi 1 n 2 also please!
michael h if you own the X all of them are very good. My personal favorite is Forza Horizon 3 with the hotwheels and blizzard mountain dlc. Forza 7 is extremely good but its not an open world environment like Forza Horizon 3 is

Sony makes a bunch of Japanese crap ( I've owned all of the PlayStations) the games are great but console quality is crap. Xbox definitely makes the best consoles. Original Xbox was way nicer than ps2, 360 was way nicer than ps3, and besides it's bulkyness, the og xb1 was way nicer than the PS4. It ran alot cooler and was and is more reliable. The 1X is the greatest home console ever. Only a fan boy or someone whose never owned one would disagree.
Definitely plan on buying this, never got a chance to play it in the 360. And just got Witcher 2 and it looks amazing and plays even better, never finished it back on 360 so I’ll definitely do it now.
The original game code had the ability to scale in game text fonts based on the output resolution specified by the gpu. Increasing font size when resolution increased. PC games do this also
For anyone wondering where the view and menu buttons are they are in the same place as the start and select buttons on the Xbox 360 (either side of the X home button)

i will forever remember the two biggest final triple A titles for the 360 from 1st party studios, it was this one and Halo 4 ( which was SUPERB too , and a new take on Halo from 343 industries ) i was blown away by what the 360 could do .. there was quite a huge improvement between the first game we had and these two last triple A games.... they still look gorgeous... thx MS for the backwards compatibility , now with the O.G xbox too , so happy to play panzer dragoon orta, blinx, breakdown, conker bad fur day.. etc.. waiting for jet set radio future and most if not all SEGA exclusive from the O.G xbox to became BC.

Nice review but FH2 was the last Forza game on X360 (different version to the XOne version) also I didn't even know (or forgot) you could bring the classic 360 HUD up and change things, so thanks for that! I already had the game and all DLC but It's a bit silly 'Next Genning' it but leaving all the DLC out
I used to love this game back during the Xbox 360 times!! Before this generation, I used love console gaming... but after the PS4 and Xbox One released, I built my PC and never regretted it from then... But still I own a PS4,3DS and a Switch... But PC is the platform I prefer..
They may have used distance fields for text rendering. That way you can use very small font textures for much larger texts. And if you do not need more details for higher resolutions you can scale them to infinity without losing sharpness.
The reason why the text in Forza Horizon now renders at native 4k is because the text is vector-based. Thus, they really don't need to touch the original code when hey do these X enhancements. I for one hope more backwards-compatible 360 titles get X enhanced. They look gloriously sharp!
On the increased font resolution: what I assume is happening is that the font was already set to render based on the framebuffer size, and since the 360 emulator boosts the game to 4k, the font changes as needed.

Wow this is really incredible being able to upgrade the visuals of your favorite old school games man I like this a lot. And the potential to be able to run old school games at 60FPS instead of 30FPS would be very interesting. I gotta say Microsoft is doing a rather great job with the One X a lot of the features it has are that of a high end gaming PC so it does seem to go far and away more then what you would expect from a standard consoles upgrade.

I literally just started this yesterday, good to see where the sequels got their gusto from. The things I put off in 2012... I also find it hilarious that we got Burnout Paradise with games with gold and they're releasing a remaster soon.
Man idk how they did it but these guys are right, the game looks phenomenal. Much sharper than FH2 just due to the resolution difference (on my 4k screen at least). The game is damn impressive for 360. I never played it when I came out.
I have been loving the one X. Of course some games I'll buy on PC but my My one X has become a very Convenient and enjoyable experience. Glad they brought consoles out of the Muk and in line with some mid-High range PCs out there.
Neo Trickster Zero, it was still open world, I assume you mean you couldn't go off-road as much in the 360 version. Having played both versions, I honestly preferred this on the 360. The off-road races could be annoying when you couldn't see where you were going. They rightly toned this down somewhat for FH3, less fields of dense high crops etc. But the 360 version was excellent in its own right and unfairly slated imo.

You don't have to change the game code to improve text. Fonts are scalable to the dpi of the display. It's like this on computers. The text scaling is based on the resolution, unless the developer tied it to the resolution of the game itself.
Great video. I really liked Forza Horizon 3 which I played on PC. I never played the first two. But the big draw for me was how much it reminded me of Burnout Paradise which I had a fantastic time with on PS3. I'm definitely cheering for Microsoft because One X narrows the gap between console and PC quality to the point that One X could be a PC in some regards.

Omg it looks like it came out maybe 3 years ago, max.. This game is gorgeous and they really outdid themselves with it. Just ordered it online and I'm wondering, will the hard copy of the game also be enhanced? And I also don't have an Xbox one X but will I still see visual improvements over the old version? Original Xbox was way nicer than ps2, 360 was way nicer than ps3, and besides it's bulkyness, the og xb1 was way nicer than the PS4. It ran alot cooler and was and is more reliable. The 1X is the greatest home console ever. Only a fan boy or someone whose never owned one would disagree.

Definitely plan on buying this, never got a chance to play it in the 360. And just got Witcher 2 and it looks amazing and plays even better, never finished it back on 360 so I’ll definitely do it now.
The GUI text in the game is most likely a vectorised font, which would explain why it's scaling up well in 4k.

The original game code had the ability to scale in game text fonts based on the output resolution specified by the gpu. Increasing font size when resolution increased. PC games do this also
For anyone wondering where the view and menu buttons are they are in the same place as the start and select buttons on the Xbox 360 (either side of the X home button)
Thanks for showcasing! It's a shame wwe miss out on 60fps after playing through all of Horizon 3 on the PC in 60fps.... but 4k/30 is better than 720p/30. :)

Fired this up last night. Looks damn good.
i will forever remember the two biggest final triple A titles for the 360 from 1st party studios, it was this one and Halo 4 ( which was SUPERB too , and a new take on Halo from 343 industries ) i was blown away by what the 360 could do .. there was quite a huge improvement between the first game we had and these two last triple A games.... they still look gorgeous... thx MS for the backwards compatibility , now with the O.G xbox too , so happy to play panzer dragoon orta, blinx, breakdown, conker bad fur day.. etc.. waiting for jet set radio future and most if not all SEGA exclusive from the O.G xbox to became BC.
Re: Fonts... they’re likely vector based rather than bitmapped, so scale up to the higher resolution perfectly.

and filtering!! thats important too! resolution bump to 1080p and filtering would be nearly the same.
The performance mode is for standard Xbox One to run at 720p to encourage better frame rates.
MS and several developers has been offering some cool perks and imprivements for Scorpio consoles, I appreciate this and hope it continues...now just waiting for VR.

Forza Horizon looks amazing. One thing I've noticed is that games that are remastered from last gen can look absolutely amazing. TLoU comes to mind.

Nice review but FH2 was the last Forza game on X360 (different version to the XOne version) also I didn't even know (or forgot) you could bring the classic 360 HUD up and change things, so thanks for that! I already had the game and all DLC but It's a bit silly 'Next Genning' it but leaving all the DLC out

I used to love this game back during the Xbox 360 times!! Before this generation, I used love console gaming... but after the PS4 and Xbox One released, I built my PC and never regretted it from then... But still I own a PS4,3DS and a Switch... But PC is the platform I prefer..
They may have used distance fields for text rendering. That way you can use very small font textures for much larger texts. And if you do not need more details for higher resolutions you can scale them to infinity without losing sharpness.

4k enhanced 360 titles is a nice touch. I have a catalog of 360 games I can't wait to replay in 4k once they get enhanced.
This wasn't the last Forza game on the 360 - there was version of Forza Horizon 2 released (albeit heavily cut back from the Xbox One version).
i dont have an Xbox but is amazing how all 3 games look so good. Forza is a great franchaise, i hope to pick up 3 on pc soon
The reason why the text in Forza Horizon now renders at native 4k is because the text is vector-based. Thus, they really don't need to touch the original code when hey do these X enhancements. I for one hope more backwards-compatible 360 titles get X enhanced. They look gloriously sharp!
On the increased font resolution: what I assume is happening is that the font was already set to render based on the framebuffer size, and since the 360 emulator boosts the game to 4k, the font changes as needed.
360Hz physics simulation?? Holy smokes that's impressive af. Those servers must be really good. I must say I always like to hear info like that, info that always goes unheard of. :)

Wow this is really incredible being able to upgrade the visuals of your favorite old school games man I like this a lot. And the potential to be able to run old school games at 60FPS instead of 30FPS would be very interesting. I gotta say Microsoft is doing a rather great job with the One X a lot of the features it has are that of a high end gaming PC so it does seem to go far and away more then what you would expect from a standard consoles upgrade.
I don't really like Xbox, but damn they are doing this shit right.

Man idk how they did it but these guys are right, the game looks phenomenal. Much sharper than FH2 just due to the resolution difference (on my 4k screen at least). The game is damn impressive for 360. I never played it when I came out.

I have been loving the one X. Of course some games I'll buy on PC but my My one X has become a very Convenient and enjoyable experience. Glad they brought consoles out of the Muk and in line with some mid-High range PCs out there.

Neo Trickster Zero, it was still open world, I assume you mean you couldn't go off-road as much in the 360 version. Having played both versions, I honestly preferred this on the 360. The off-road races could be annoying when you couldn't see where you were going. They rightly toned this down somewhat for FH3, less fields of dense high crops etc. But the 360 version was excellent in its own right and unfairly slated imo.

You don't have to change the game code to improve text. Fonts are scalable to the dpi of the display. It's like this on computers. The text scaling is based on the resolution, unless the developer tied it to the resolution of the game itself.
A cut-down version of Horizon 2 was definitely on 360, running on the Horizon 1 engine.
Great video. I really liked Forza Horizon 3 which I played on PC. I never played the first two. But the big draw for me was how much it reminded me of Burnout Paradise which I had a fantastic time with on PS3. I'm definitely cheering for Microsoft because One X narrows the gap between console and PC quality to the point that One X could be a PC in some regards.
Forza horizon wasn’t the last Forza title on the xbox 360. Forza horizon 2 had both Xbox 360 and Xbox One cross-gen titles.
Maybe they were using TrueType or Vector fonts, instead of bitmaps. Something like that would explain the crispness of the text on the XBOX ONE X.

This game is gorgeous and they really outdid themselves with it. Just ordered it online and I'm wondering, will the hard copy of the game also be enhanced? And I also don't have an Xbox one X but will I still see visual improvements over the old version? My questions will most likely be answered tomorrow but I'm just hype af to relive this game again lol.
This game is like what EA should have made a ProStreet 2. I played the hell of this game. I come back to it every now and then when I need a break from the other 3 versions.
Hope this game comes to GamePass that would be great. Plus the other games that have had the 4K treatment.

The last Forza for the 360 was Forza Horizon 2 in 2014 by Sumo Digital. A good companion for the XBOne version.
