I love the fact that Digital Foundry has become the ultimate beta testers as they seem to find and point out all these little things which the devs may actually already know about but maybe didn't have time to implement before launching the product. Thankfully we live in an age of digital updates and many little things can be patched and fixed over time. At least the frame rate and resolution are solid right off the bad so it'll still be a joy to play the game.
Oh this explains so much! I was wondering why it looked kinda off as I've mostly played in the quality mode on One X. I really hope they improve it soon
@@fnsonicrick As far as I can tell it still hasn't. I wonder if there's some limitation with the gen9aware gdk (would be weird but these consoles can definitely include AO)
I know that most of the upgrades other than increased FPS are probably unnoticeable when I'm driving over 100 mph, but I still find all of this technical analysis fascinating!
Actually how faster you drive how much more noticeable it is because due to you driving in fast speeds the frames only render at 24fps so when you say 500feet every 2 seconds your game will be chopping those frames as 500:24~20:2=10 feet per frame while 60fps will get you 500:60~8:2=4 feet per frame. Would you want 10 feet per frame or rather 4 feet per frame? And the difference increases exponentially too.
I don't think you are "reading" the timestamps correctly. The millisecond counts seem to be counting to 60 but you are reading them as a decimal point. At 4:13 you say 13:40 as "13.4" seconds but it's more like 13.67.
That's an interesting thing to point out. I've never actually seen milliseconds to be counted up to 60. I wonder if it's just a visual presentation thing on the video overlay here or DF's internal tools actually do count like that. Technically, a millisecond is a 1000 of a second so it's always counted to 1000.
@@uzeeinc I think it must be a problem with the tool. A "mm:ss:msms" format just doesn't make sense. The ":" as a seperator is unusual, you would need 4 digits instead of 2 for ms and of course it wouldn't count to 60. It should be "mm:ss.##" with ## being the first two decimals for the seconds.
I noticed the same thing. To the point from @UzEEInc , in the video does show the last two digits counting from 0x to 5x and back to 0x, and it certainly shouldn't be read like a decimal number using the word 'point'.
I'm personally not a fan. I love DF and always watch the videos but it's frustrating that Alex always highlights something so pointless like the 3fps dips that rarely ever happen and are barely noticeable in this video. He does usually go into a much deeper analysis than the other members of the team. But I guess it's all down to personal preference.

I'm definitely happy with the system.
Loading times are great, on average fast traveling was taking me a maximum of 2 seconds on the series X compared with probably 10 times that on my One X even on a SSD.
Even an RX5700XT, which is inferior to the XSX gpu level, is able to run FH4 at perfectly solid 4K60fps on ultra settings. My theory here is that the game is still running in backwards compatibility mode, so they cant still make use of RDNA2 IPC improvements, i think that it's literally emulating GCN behaviour. The game shouldn't be announced as an X|S optimized in this state.
@@thenoobperspective7588That's not right, the game have sligh fps drops on race starting scenes, which means that it's also hitting performance limitations on XSX, this game is still running in BC mode, just with a new settings tweak.

Thank you for this. I knew something wasn’t right visually. I just couldn’t pick it out. The shadows, I definitely saw. I didn’t catch the ambient occlusion missing, nor the characters animating at half frame rate. So hopefully they fix these. There is no way the new machine can’t run it at 60 frames per second with these things present... or maybe it’s something with the engine. But if the PC can do it at ultra with a 2080, the series X should be able to do it the same. It just might need more optimization. Let’s hope it was just some sort of glitch or something they missed in translation. Cause it’s funny, because something seemed off to me and I couldn’t place it. Definitely the ambient occlusion would make a huge difference along with the shadows. There is also some sort of lighting glitch and I can’t place what that is. I notice it when I rotate the camera, especially through trees. It seems like there are light flashes. I don’t know what that is. Maybe you guys have a better idea.
I never played the One X version of FH4. I'm playing it now for the first time on my Series X and noticed a big update after the initial install. I appreciate these kinds of analisis. Shows developers that issues don't go unnoticed no matter how minor they are. The resources are there. Use them to the best of their abilities.
Yes im highly interested in that! I wonder what resolution AC Valhalla is running at on the consoles, various sources conflict each other in that lol. For Watch Dogs Legion, I did some comparisons and found out the texture quality is set to medium, Headlight shadows appear to be off and shadow quality should be Ultra (on Series X, idk about Series S) due to enabled contact shadows. RT should be below medium as some reflections are missing. I'm sure Alex will find out a lot more cool stuff though.
@@dampflokfreund gotta be something wrong with your analysis, there’s just zero chance next gen Watch Dogs versions use medium textures with the amount of RAM available
One issue I had, was my old save game crashed everytime I reached the autumn transition when I tried it on my series X. I had to delete my cloud and local saves. That fixed the issue, and luckily I wasn’t very far along anyway.
You can already get 60fps at 1080p with a mixture of High and Ultra settings using an old R9 380 4GB. Surprised that the Xbox Series S is only able to match that, but without any SSAO.
they want to give people a bigger reason to get the series x, so they dont use the series s to its full potential maybe? Or they neglect the Series S because they are so invested in the Series X competing with ps5? i dont know
I suspect a lot of legacy games are going to get multiple generations of upgrade patches for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Publishers have a deep interest in making the games attractive to new console buyer ASAP, so they'll make incremental upgrades to their existing IPs until it's no longer deemed as producing positive ROI. 2021 will be the year of the upgrade patch while the senior teams develop entirely new IPs.
Love DF as a news source for all games. But sometimes ya'll reach for straws on these things. No body is going to notice that 400% zoom of a distance quality or the frame dropping from 60 to 58 for a mere second.
Well were over a month down the line and the missing effects on series X still havent been fixed no ambient occlusion etc and that's with DF reaching out to the developer I wouldn't mind but theres been two patches since release of series x patch 🤷♂️
Most people aren’t complaining about it. If anything people are praising it. So it may never get fixed which is a shame. I literally stopped playing after updating from the one x
@@monarchu yeah I last had a update a week ago and nothing has been added back in that I can see SSAO is still missing which is the biggest thing for me so don't know why you've posted false information
Thanks for this video. When i was playing on my Series S i noticed that the night didn't look as pretty as in some videos of the One X but i wasn't sure why. Now i can see that the lack of shadows at night was the issue.I really hope that they add those shadows for the Series S :(
So one of the weirder details is the shadow inconsistency in the Series X version. For almost every single race the dynamic shadows are turned off...except I noticed in the stunt events it's fully active. This incurred no performance hits either so my feeling is this was kept as is on the one x because of an oversight. I would hope they patch it back in as it adds a ton to when you are driving around the world at night. The atmosphere is excellent.
Last time I played it was on Xbox One S until yesterday on my new Series X. It's a different game, 4K/60 and with this beautiful setting is jaw-dropping.
Not really effective to just add rt to a game that wasnt designed useing the system architecture or designed for use of RT You would end up with either really shit at that is lower resolution than just screen space Or the performance would be terrible There are alot of Dev tools and features deigned to alleviate stress from RT use however this game was not designed with those in might Just look at devil may cry next gen version as evidence of this The RT is complete garbage and the framrates are all over the place
@@marcuslightbody6933 I also thought the ray tracing in DMC 5 looked pretty bad. It just looks like Capcom littered the screen with puddles but I noticed there aren’t even reflections on some of them.
Damn, one of the features i love in Quality Mode on the X1X is the car light shadow, i really hope Panic Button fix it on the XSX in races, same for SSAO, otherwise i'll stick to my PC when playing FH4, when i get XSX.
@@Scalene_2 One of the features i love to do in FH4 is to take some really beautiful shots, so yeah I prefer the first option in that case. But what I meant to say is PC not X1X, my apoligies.
Thanks DF, finally a relevant comparison about FH4 :). I had the chance to receive my Series X on 10th nov (France), but when I launched Forza Horizon 4 (which I used to plays dozens of hrs on One X quality mode), something appeared weird to me eyes, as if it was more "flat" visually... Here's the clear explanation . This new gen is deceptive, seems to already show its limitations on old gen games upgrades: that kind of graphic concession to allow 60 fps is too bad. And, in the case of Gears 5 for example, the visual were improved as it was already running at 60 on One X...
ONE X still kickin ass. I Think it will be worse in trully next gen games like it was after Xbox One premiere. Crossgen games look very good, had stable FPS (like Assassins Creed Black flag), but when AC Unity came out, XONE and PS4 cant handle new engine. Sry for my eng.
It has nothing do to with hardware limitations here. It's just a port and as a port, it relies on devs skills to exploit the potential of the hardware. Since Playground didn't work on those ports directly, i guess it's normal to see a difference. Just remember that it's just a port, a simple optimisation. They didn't redo the whole game for the Series S/X. There is no point in judging the console based on those ports. For example, Forza Horizon 3 is running at 30fps on Series X/S, not because the console can't handle it, but because the game received no optimisation. Previous gen games optimised for next-gen console will always depend of devs skills. The Series X is capable of better than that, same for the Series S.
If you're a plebe like me and don't have a series x yet, getting an external ssd for your one x will improve load times substantially... Just a bit of solace for those still on the old generation.
Math seems easy to me, 4x the resolution but only 2x the GPU as Xbox one X. If I saw that correctly, Xbox one X performance mode was 1080p 60. Some concessions had to be made.
6:30 The "one off drop" happened to me multiple times. I found that it might have something to do with server connection as it only happened when I was on a full server and a few minutes away from a Forzathon event but happened three times or so since playing on release day
The new Xbox Series ports are not done by Turn 10, they are done by PanicButton Games. Send your findings to PanicButton, turn 10 does not deal with the Series X and S upgrades!
Yup. Basically all the issues that the series x version has can be blamed on playground games moreso that the Xbox itself. Would be interesting to see 120 fps 1080p, but I'm not sure if it's possible.
Yep That put in evidence that Playground is very bussy with Fable and the next Horizon.... Hope that Panic Button fix the game, they are putting Playground's work in shame!
2 years on and still no SSAO on Xbox Series. They should keep the graphics toggle so we could choose between max quality at 30fps or balanced visuals at 60fps.
People need to understand how important VRR is going to be this generation. Upgrade your TVs, or get a really solid monitor early next year. Frame tearing and drops will be expected the higher our FPS targets get to.
So...are all the problems fixed on the Series X by now (driver animations at 30 fps, missing headlight shadows in races, no ambient occlusion, worse motion blur)?
Imagine getting yours the day it releases and then jumping on a plane over seas for 2 weeks the very next day? That's my good and bad situation right now. 😀😡
Now that I have my Series X.. I have to say.. the 60fps does feel great.. but I wondered why I wasn't impressed with the graphics. This clarifies it. Thanks, Alex! Hopefully it'll get patched soon to take full advantage. Can we have ray tracing too please?
Great video. FH4 looks stunning no matter what yhe review indicates though. I really like what IGN is doing now with their analysis of video games as DF does. However, what IGN is doing is one step forward to DF, is that they actually include an interview from the developer regarding the decision taken towards what was to be included or not on upgrading a game. That way, we as gamers have a better understanding on whether a patch ia expected to improve on the issues or not.
This is crazy! Did we just witness the first ever Forza framerate drop? Forza has ALWAYS had locked framerates on console, whether it's 30 in Horizon or 60 in Motorsport (or Horizon 4 on One X). I know that Panic Button made the Series X|S port and not Playground/Turn 10, but it still really baffles me.
Man this game looks great. I played in Performance mode on the One X. 4K and the higher render distance just add so much to the experience. I am in awe, feels amazing to play.
What's agonizing is that this game has those idiotic unskippable intro logos... so no matter how fast your drive is, you still have to wait for that bull**** to play x_x
@@PookaBot Aahhh flashbacks to max payne 3 hahaha, they should just ad those logos as billboards/signs in game if they want us to see those, do it in-game.
Yeah, I was expecting more. But I do think a lot of developers are on the ropes as no other generational transition has taken place during a time on global pandemic. I do feel like these first batch of patches do not really tell the whole story. Time will tell.
It's not just that there are caveats, but that the Series S appears to be worse off than the X1X. 1080p with worse textures, and this is an in-house developed last gen title simply getting prettied up for the new gen. That's fairly concerning.
@@instantstupor Ray Tracing really hurt the Series S version of the game. It should be an optional mode for that console. In really curious to see which console performs better running this game so I can buy it for my PS5 or Series X.
Great video, as always! I'm very impatient to see some comparisons between PS5 and Xbox Series X for multiplatform games like Assassin's Creed: Valhalla! :D
This is an XBOX One title that is two years old - not sure why you're saying them not remastering it for the X is a fault. They upped the frame rate and clicked a couple of boxes and gave it as a free update to everyone. That's pretty good in my book. Dinging them for not going through and redoing all the compression settings, etc, that just seems like nonsense for a game that isn't a native Series X game. If they do it, awesome, but as far as I know they never told anyone this was getting a full redo.
I can't help but think digital foundry is downplaying how the game looks on series x. Either that or my eyes are seeing something different than what they are seeing.
I think I will stick with my One X. Theres so many exclusives worth getting on PS5 I plan to make the jump to PS5. On the One X there's literally this and Gears of War. Gears of War did a superb job of 4K dynamic and I believe it managed 60fps too. So if I can get Gears 6 4K 60fps and HDR on the One X when it comes out I'm happy to stick with that and save £450 $499. Its not worth it to buy a new console for one game or maybe 2 with Ray Tracing. Il get the PS5 for third party games and exclusives and maybe PSVR 2 if it happens. I dont see the need in anybody with a One X to upgrade if you buy a PS5 unless your a hard-core Xbox gamer. By the way I'm not knocking the Xbox Series X it looks a beast but in perspective I couldn't justify the cost against my One X
He said that the series S didn't seem to hit the advertised 1440p resolution. Everytime they have said they would say it's 1080p/1440p target. NEVER just ,1440p. Seems like he is misrepresenting what they said.
Seems like Panic Button basically botched the update, really disappointed that Playground didn’t just do the port themselves. Hopefully they patch the game in since missing Ambient Occlusion is a big deal lmao.
Holy crap dude that game was so ahead of it’s time. I fired it up recently and even at 1080p it dunks on the majority of racing games today. A 4K60fps re-release would look incredible

The one thing i've noticed with having Horizon 4 on an SSD on my PC is when i play multiplayer, sure i load fast but i still have to wait for people with XBOX One's to load in lol
I noticed on my one X that the stutters were usually in sync with the radio. I think it's an audio buffer issue with the engine as I've had other stutters where the announcer repeats them self several times too. Likely it's constantly polling the audio engine to keep songs in sync with chatter across all stations
1080p for an older title getting some light visual polish, and an in-house developed title no less? That's concerning. X1X looking better than Series S is extra concerning. I thought the S made a lot of sense, as I think 1440p is really a nice jump over 4k and close enough - especially at couch distance - that you wouldn't really miss that extra detail. But 1080p is pretty disappointing for the 1440p machine - if that happens more often than not, then MS seems to have miscalculated with the S.
It will definitely happen a lot bro. Its a 1080p machine. The series x is actually a 1440p beast. I imagine in future to eek more performance from games, devs will have dynamic res with a 1440p and 4k target respectively. But more often than not be lower
Yes it was just marketing talk as much as PS4 Pro was said to be a 4K console. But most SX owners have no 1440p monitor and use a 1080p or 4K TV which both scales well with 1080p
Always predicted Xbox Series S to perform at either 1080p 60 or 1440p 30. So people should keep their expectations in check. Plus this is a last-gen game

It has better textures then quality mode on the x. And better draw distance.
@@paulerlingheuser8453 yeah but weirdly enough the draw distance on grass feels smaller and for some reason there isn't ambient occlusion?

I just realized you said other then fps kill me now.
@@blazesmooth5573 where did you find this information that fh4 only renders at 24fps when your driving.
@@darkzer0455 I never said it does? I only gave a reference number to compare greater fps.

I don't notice that at all.
The Series X is capable of better than that, same for the Series S.
so you need to zoom 400% to see the resolution differente, I guess I will go with the Series S.
If you're a plebe like me and don't have a series x yet, getting an external ssd for your one x will improve load times substantially... Just a bit of solace for those still on the old generation.

It's frustrating to be a fan of the game and notice that if you look closely it does fail to live up to its huge potential.
Is destiny 2 now running finally 60fps on the new xbox series x? And how long are the loading times? How fast is the menu?
Is the destiny 2 upgrade even out for xbox series x?
That ForzaTech engine is so cool. Wish more engines were that optimized.
Hopefully they will fix those visual settings. It really makes no sense for the quality to be worse than on the One X.
The one thing i've noticed with having Horizon 4 on an SSD on my PC is when i play multiplayer, sure i load fast but i still have to wait for people with XBOX One's to load in lol
That is rather maddening.
Pretty minor nitpicking, I know, but 11:53 does not equal 11.5 seconds, Alex. That's not how counting time works :p
Most powerful console ever.. fails to reach graphical qualities of the predecessor?!
Awesome analysis. I feel like this upgrade was rushed to match the Series X|S releases. Hopefully we get more patches and fixes soon!
You mean the Series X/S was rushed?
@@spenny2cents no, I mean the optimization patch was rushed.
Can't wait to receive my Series X tomorrow.
Not going to happen.
@Sir Vamped Really ? That's funny 😂
@@Tyler-nj5dr It already shipped ;)
Always predicted Xbox Series S to perform at either 1080p 60 or 1440p 30. So people should keep their expectations in check. Plus this is a last-gen game
I could have sworn the game didn't look quite as good when I booted it up on my Series X coming from my One X. Thanks for making this video. Hope they fix it soon.
The load times kill this game. SSD is a game changer.
