I am a huge fan of Serious Sam, but i will say that if there's another thing i hate about Serious Sam 3 alongside nude harpies, reloading weapons, laser & sniper being secret weapons only (for the main campaign) & dark underground puzzles would be the LACK OF AMMO.
Like seriously i think having lack of ammo would be the final nail in the coffin for the game considering how difficult some of the later level fights are, Gman did mention that in his video and i do 100% agree with that on him. I hate the lack of ammo this game gives. But aside from what all i mentioned, i would say it's a pretty descent game.

@@DustyEchozyAs someone who’s beaten the game on Serious and Mental several times, this is actually not true. It’s all about using the right weapon for the job and I never once had an issue with ammo scarcity. Especially when you have mechanics like the mutilator and melee attack

I have only 2 problems with this game. Enemies with hit-scan weapons. Considering how many enemies are in the screen at once with a game that does not uses health regen system (which isn't a bad thing :) ), it's not a good decision IMHO. All man, no cover is a good thing as long as you can avoid the projectiles!
The other problem are the Kleers, those motherf(word) skeletons. IMO they are too fast, too resistance to damage and too powerful, not to mention when the game throws 500 of them at you. Half of the enemies you kill trough the game are Kleers.
I really like the first two SS games but SS3 is my least favorite. One dimension level design, annoying enemies, why do I have to reload my weapon in a Serious Sam game? Maybe the problem is with me, but I struggled to finish the game on Normal difficulty, and it nearly made me to never play it again. F(word)ing Kleers. Hate them with a passion.

  • @Banzay27
    @Banzay27 10 років тому +7

This game is not for everyone, if that ever needs saying. Point to make being that nostalgia is not required to enjoy it. I never played the old Serious Sams; the closest to it I've played was Painkiller, years and years back. Last year, I played Serious Sam 3 and I rather enjoyed it.
I'm not even that much of an old school gamer! Due to a gamer of an older brother who bought his first PC at 16, myself being 7 years of age at the time, I was introduced to gaming very early on. Star Control was the first PC game I ever laid eyes on and I've since experienced many, many games, including quite possibly most of the more famous classics such as Doom & Quake, Fallout, Heroes of Might & Magic and many others as popular or less so -- apart from Star Control itself, of course.
Having said that, I've played through all three Modern Warfare campaigns and I enjoyed them, significantly. So much so, I was compelled to make a little video out of the second game, for my own reminiscing if nothing else.
I've played and enjoyed many other games with a more _modern_ feel. I am equally not that particular about one genre or another, even if I do have my preferences. I like my games much as I like my music. If it's good, I may like it, regardless of genre (with exceptions, of course).
Having said *all of that*... I re-iterate my opinion: nostalgia is not required to have fun in Serious Sam 3. I will voice some criticism, however... firstly, you might want prefer to take this game in bursts. I played through it as I usually do: playing daily until I reached _The End._ I tend to do this especially with FPS games, as they, in turn, tend to be relatively short. Yet, this game is not that short, even though it's gameplay is very much constant: kill everything! And survive. To live another day and kill everything elsewhere. Playing it nonstop, day after day... well, as enjoyable as it was, it got repetitive.
There is the obvious solution: playing it... somewhat casual-like. Or not, if you never tire of it. I didn't take a break because I prefer to power through games, as the next one is always close in line.
I think some of the levels were indeed poorly designed, though I liked the egyptian theme overall. And I found those alien monkeys you first encounter in the dark underground tunnels and catacombs to be a little... off from the Serious Sam template, as I understood it. They slowed down gameplay. But, there was some fun in it, particularly since it was exactly a change of pace from the usual horde rampaging.
There's only one thing in the game that I thoroughly dislike: the skeletal demons. I absolutely abhorred that foe. The pouncing, the frigging double ball and chains... irritating as all Hell. That they're one of the most common foes made it a frustrating aspect of the game, for me.
TL;DR: new players can enjoy SS3; fuck skeletal demon goats.

@LionelRaw The game TB mentioned is Arma: Armed Assault. It comes fairly close to depicting what modern armed combat actually is like. You apparently have something like 10km worth of draw distance, and shotguns act like real shotguns, not Quake shotguns.
Or, if you've got a bit of a masochist streak, there's always Red Orchestra, set in World War II: Get shot by near-invisible enemy with a bullet drop, projectile-based, non-hitscan weapon; die.

If you're trying to run the game at really high settings and are getting nasty frame rate issues, make sure super sampling is turned completely off. It's not a necessary feature, but the developers included it for people with really high end systems who would want to try running the game at the highest possible settings.
Also, You can always disable ambient occlusion, or turn it down at least. AO doesn't make a HUGE difference, and it can be costly on older systems.
    Also, great review.

FPSs in the 90s was all about the shooting, the different weapons and power-ups that all looked and felt different, every one of them adding different strategies to how you approach enemy encounters( since enemies all looked and behaved differently ).
Of course you had your general purpose weapons like shotguns and machineguns but for more powerfull enemies you needed something with a bit more kick. 90's shooters was also about the complex yet memmorable level design and character.

The .357 DE will take 9 rounds with a tenth in the chamber. The problem is that the Desert Eagle has bad problems with jams and .357 and .44 Mag exacerbate the issue since the gas pressures of those cartridges are so lower then .50AE so you get a lot off Failure to Feed or Failure to Eject.

Old school shooters generally require more thinking than most people think - you've got encounters where you have to retreat to cover and then think about how to approach the issue (which targets to eliminate first? What cover can I use effectively? Where should I move to?), because if you just bust in guns blazing left right and center without forethought, you're gonna get wasted (or at least suffer an unacceptable amount of damage that won't regenerate by itself).

And TB, the Desert Eagle isn't supposed to have huge recoil when using smaller ammunition. Sniping those enemies is EASY with desert eagle, so you should consider that. Melee is really well as long as you can't get hit while you're executing it and when you're fighting 1 enemy or having more come at you 1 by 1. Really useful against Kleers.

This game is pure nostalgia. The game (once the real action kicks in) brings back the good old memories of Serious Sam. Though personally I think they could have skipped stuff like clips, and it feels they could have had more varied weapons since they let reality come before variation on SS3 sadly. But no biggie, the game is still awesome as hell! And i's the adrenaline I have been searching for for years

My biggest complaint with this game is it will drag some sections with way more enemy waves than necessary, making sure you've exhausted and are completely bored with every nook and cranny before you're allowed to move on.

I actually just finished reading the older comments, I would've commented back sooner, however I was rather busy today, but I digress, I noticed you mentioned a certain game by the name of S.T.A.L.K.E.R., which is rather interesting considering that in the world of FPS, I have only seen that name come up a handful of times.

I guess it's just a part of growing up during the transition from the 90s puzzle solving to the modern reflex games.
During my childhood I've only been exposed to the games rangeing from Half-Life to the begining of the first MW (age from 2-10)
so I've only seen the very end of the "Old School" era.

TB's WTF series is of first impressions. He seemed to love the game overall since he mentions it in some Painkiller videos. The only game he ever went to do somewhat of a full review was of BioShock Infinite. I particularly enjoyed SS3 out of the series since the early levels eased me into the gameplay progressing into the ridiculously serious final level.

@BeardedKirklander It is a well-known fact. With Vsync, the program waits until the next verical blank on the screen to flip the buffers, resulting in keyboard or mouse inputs being buffered during the wait and thus delaying them. It's also why performance is usually worse with vsync on.
And yes, the whole point of vsync is to eliminate visual tearing. But it comes at a cost, that's why it's not enabled by default.

I loved the old games, especially on serious difficulty. I would host 16 player matches all the time. And the great thing about it is that EVERYONE would want to play my server. But I also remember how we used to have to use the serious deathmatch mod to play deathmatch.

The only modern FPS that still feels like an old-school shooter because of that reliance on different types of weapons to bring down different enemies is the Halo Franchise, like using a weapon to rapidly bring down an enemies shield ( plasma rifle ) then using something like the shotgun or pistol to kill him. And of course open level design. The only game in the 90s that made puzzles a part of the gameplay was HL previous shooters only had very few of them.

Thanks for this WTF-video, I enjoyed it quite a lot. Very informative, very funny. Although I am currently playing the demo I downloaded from XboxLIVE your video nudged me towards actually buying it. Like yourself I am enjoying this old-schooliness to shooters quite a lot. I am sick and tired of all those pseudo-realistic military shooters a.k.a. Modern Battleduty of Fieldmetal Gloryfare warcall. SS3 looks just like the stuff I am missing recently. Well, apart from Bulletstorm, that is. :)

  • @dellefranz

I've played the game, and I couldn't stop thinking that this game cosmeticly IS Righteous Slaughter 7 as seen in GTA V, I mean there's the desert city you are going through, there's the assault rifle with the holographic sight, the bad ass minigun, the huge axe you can chop down enemies with, thousands litres of blood being spread everywhere and the hundreds of enemies covering the screen and instead of xp you have a point system. The major differences is that there's no healthbar, no british dude shouting in your ear, no hippies and no Shitstick 3000...
(of course Righteous Slaughter is a parody of COD with the british dude and the regenerating health, but when it comes to gameplay it looks a lot like this game.
You wouldn't have to make too many changes to make a Righteous Slaughter mod for Serious Sam 3.)
But there is no need to change this game because it is already a awesome game.

I think he was saying that Doom has no "see-through" map, as in a transparent map that allows you to shoot stuff while viewing the map (like Duke3d has).
Doom has a map all right as you said, but you can't see what's coming at you while looking at it (which I actually kinda like - makes it scarier).
But I figure we're just splitting hairs - I know what TB meant in the video and I understood his point. Maps are very oldschool indeed (even if Wolfenstein 3-D had none).

To be fair to this game, the levels are usually either linear, or there are signposts or exit signs leading you through the more maze-like parts. And I really like the smoke effect, because it forces you to adopt new tactics. The sewer level is definitely annoying, though, because of those god damn celing insect things which you can barely see.

Serious Sam games have taken place in Egypt and around the middle east since the late 90's, before COD and this infatuation with mid-east conflicts. The entirety of the First Encounter took place entirely in Egypt, albeit in an ancient setting.

I know that TB doesn't care for achievements, but he's right, the aim down sights is optional. From what I heard, there's apparently an achievement for beating the game in an old school fasion (i.e., no sprint, no aiming down sights, and no manual reload)

If the old school shooter is to be resurrected,I believe the devs should make something like serious sam/duke 3D,Quake,etc. and give it a good quality story like Bioshock/Deus Ex/Metro 2033.Also,offer the choice of which health system you want.If you choose health regen, have the player fight more enemies. If you choose healthpacks,do it the old fashioned way.The two weapon limit must go too.Lastly,it needs good marketing. There's a reason CoD sells well.

This game was made for TB. MADE FOR HIM. An FPS throwback with much much too much options? That way he can't complain about the options, and he can use that leftover time to make many different stabs at the modern FPS system. Genius.
