Jim Fortune I agree with that statement. Media and advertising totally screws our knowledge and expectations of life, health, success, everything. There are no magic bullets and none of us are getting out of here alive. Our health will decline as we age no matter what we do or don’t do. Comfort and contentment should be given more weight in our choices than whatever this weeks study claims.

I think it's a return to reality. Physics has been so incredibly successful as a science, that every field wanted to be like that, all hard facts and grown up.
Difficulty is, science studies stuff that is around... Well probably since the beginning of the universe and likely hasn't changed since then.
But diet, medicine, bacteria etc... That stuff is rapidly evolving. And when we reduce it to the hard facts we basically confirm our intuition. Eat something, not too much, not too little, eat healthy and diverse but not too much either, drink plenty of water, not too much... And in the meantime, have fun with live =)

If I remember correctly, a few of those studies were also criticized for measuring a wide number of health related parameters, and reported the few that showed a change as a positive result, even though you'd reasonably expect to see that kind of "positive" to happen by random chance out of so many parameters being watched, with the fairly low p-value threshold they used.
But saying "scientists find chocolate is good for you" gets you media attention, regardless of how shoddy the science is.

Besides the flavenoid aspect, I regularly consume cocoa nibs (preferably with coffee) because the theobromine and caffeine are part of chemical family called methylxanthines that have been shown in several studies to prevent the crystallization of uric acid in joints, which is the cause of gout symptoms. This, in conjunction with regular allopurinol therapy, has completely eliminated my fear of the allopurinol triggering increased gout flare-ups due to the crystals "crashing" out of solution.

I’m showing this video to my mom next time I hear “Well I they say that dark chocolate is good for you!”
Now you just need to do one on red wine, apple cider vinegar, local honey, and coconut oil. Which no doubt all probably have some benefits but my mom doesn’t seem to be getting her info from any particularly nuanced sources (I’m never quite sure who “they” are).

I have in the past eaten 2 sara leigh 16 portion double chocolate gateaus out of the plastic tubs with a spoon due to no--one else at the party wanting any.

I think the blood pressure reduction has nothing to do with flavonoids, but the insane amount of potassium contained in cocoa. In most people, eating a regular diet, sodium and potassium are fairly retained by the kidneys and so they build up in the course of few days, then starting to show the blood pressure lowering effect of potassium.

At some point (my daughter was about 12) I gave up on Carob and we switched to chocolate.
Both my daughter and I would get unsweetened baking chocolate and gnaw on it - get high as kites from the resulting buzz. Didn't taste much worse than black coffee and after a while the bitterness was just another flavor, not a bad one.
That phase didn't last long, but we did get loaded on chocolate.

Chocolate also has something very similar to caffeine, so it also gives you all the benefits caffeine does, it also carries a lot of "vegetable serotonin" thus making people happy when they eat it. another binifit from chocoalte is the minerals it has which in many cases in history people had lack of even today, thus giving you an energetic recharged body often refered to aphrodisiac sensation, which by the way is the sensation you will always have if you eat and live healthy. This video did fulfill its purpose to find out if chocolate is good for you or not, my forcing me to do the research.

It gives a relaxing kind of optimism when i add either of those ingredients to my coffee. So anyway, it is very beneficial for my outlook and peace of mind
