We agree the Bible does NOT say that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute. Our comments reflect the fact that we thought The Chosen was portraying her that way. We have now been informed that The Chosen was NOT intending to portray her that way.

I do therapy work- have done for many years. I think that any woman who has been so traumatised that she is considered to have 7 'demons' - 7 areas of her life that are overwhelming her - may well be prostituting herself just to get by - to live. Also, I think it is just like Jesus to appear first after his resurrection to someone who had been a prostitute - and who later became a leader of The Church. Mary's huge redemptive arc is so wonderful. I have known clients who have fallen into prostitution - often to finance a drug habit - who have been so encouraged by Mary's story. (Also, Magdala was a Roman garrison town - so she may well have been subject to horrendous abuse.)

I think the chosen portraying her as a woman that was lost in her own misery with demons that she wrestled with the rape from the Roman might have set her on her path not unlike any other girl today say that that man that took advantage of me and I was lost for a long time

The confusing part is that the chosen does subtly imply that Mary is a prostitute - the scene in episode 1 implies that Mary was “with” the man she harmed and in future episodes (season 2 episode 7) when she relapses and leaves the group, the bartender is very bummed that she has money to pay for her drink as opposed to the implied idea that in the past she would prostitute herself for wine. (Somebody kill me!). Also, Simon mentions the “awful things that Mary had done” in the past when they are sitting around the camp fire. The prostitution angle is there, in my opinion.

There is no scripture that states, or implies, that she was a prostitute. That horrible assertion was a result of Pope Gregory I identifying her as the unnamed "sinful" woman who anointed Yeshua's feet. They do address that in the extras on the app and make it clear that they were not portraying her as a prostitute. That was something that I was looking for when I first watched The Chosen. It's terrible that her role has been so diminished through history. She was obviously very important to Yeshua, and she was the "apostle to the apostles". I wish there was more about her in the scriptures.

Yes exactly! I keep asking around but none of my friends are watching it…yet. 😉 But I find I’m craving that community of watching it with friends beyond the sharing and connections in the large Chosen fb groups. I keep waiting for a few friends to watch it so we can have these similar in-depth discussions and to enjoy watching someone else watch it for the first time and see the reactions and emotions that I felt from watching it the first time. To be able to watch someone tear up and then after the episode to be able to say, “ I know right? Wasn’t that line so good?!”
My family was finally going to watch the first episode at the end of celebrating my 50th birthday party, but everyone was tired by then and needing to rest (my folks are 80) and it didn’t happen…I even got the dvd from them as my bday gift as requested..hoping we could watch it together. And the irony is that they’re all church-going, Bible-study people (and they’re pastor has even talked about how great the show is and recommends it), and I’m more of a private, personal relationship with God and not a church person anymore…and yet I’m the one telling them that they’re missing out, lol. Oh the irony. 😊
Maybe the 3 of us could get together online as new friends and enjoy re-watching (as a watch party or whatever) it together and talking about it, since we all love The Chosen and Grafted?! I’m down for that if anyone else is. 💜

This whole episode is so fantastic but my absolute favorite part is the way that Jesus - utterly exhausted - still consciously ministers to the need of his mother. Earlier at the campfire Mary expressed dismay at being the mother of a man who needed nothing from her and had not for a very long time. But Jesus, when he retired to his tent and Mary came to him, said to her "What would I ever do without you?" With just a few simple words, he touched her as only he could.

That final scene of Mary helping Jesus had me in tears. Seeing His humanity- the sheer exhaustion and physical pain of a long and hard day, everything that he did for US, just really touched me. In that moment, he still took a moment to thank Mary and to let her know that He needed her, which is what she had just been saying moments earlier… just such an incredible and beautiful moment.

Wonderful, insightful video as always! The closing scene of this episode is intense! The shame on all the disciples' faces as Jesus slowly walked past. Like, wow, we've been sitting here arguing while Jesus has been pouring himself out purely for the good of others. He didn't even need to rebuke them, His example alone is rebuke enough. Wonderfully written scene, very powerful.

About Little James asking for healing - just so you know, Jordan Ross who plays him is actually disabled in real life. Just as I do, he deals with Cerebral Palsy and scoliosis. He shares about it on his instagrahm page. I am looking forward to see how this story line continues, if it does anyway - I know Jordan did say, Dallas asked him about using it in the series. Could be a lesson in that His grace is sufficient for us. II Corinthians 12:9:
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

I loved hearing one of my favourite pastors address the ‘if you had enough faith it wouldn’t have happened’ argument.
It isn’t necessarily about having enough faith to get out of a situation or for a situation to not happen. It’s about having enough faith to trust that God has a bigger plan and that even in our struggles and pain god enters into our pain to bear it with us. We are not alone. It’s more profound than ‘if you had enough faith you could get out of this situation’.

I believe that the spit and the mud was Jesus literally making eyes for the man. The disciples likely saw many blind people but when they saw this man, he must not have had any eyes. It was such a unique situation that they asked what sin this man or his parents committed. Eye gouging wasn’t an uncommon form of punishment. He could also have been born that way. Either way, Jesus using dirt, which man is made from to form new eyes would certainly explain the amount of excitement that followed that healing.

This episode crushed me. Such a reality check, our judging, pettiness, selfishness, unforgiveness, arrogance and Jesus suffered and gave himself over totally for us. No whining, no complaining, no anger, just teaching, over and over, patiently molding us and we fight back. He just keeps loving us like a squirming child trying to wriggle away from a parent. Our family has experienced mourn for a while, first with a nephew that drowned a few years ago. It is something that we still mourn about, but recently, this year of 2021, we had my father that past away from covid in january, and last month was also my mother in law that was another victim of covid. It was only this year i have learned what Tom was saying about suffering and mourn. I had never felt the presence of Adonai so closed than this days of struggle, and i had put all my suffering, all my family mourn in His Throne. Suffering tends to put us in a "victim" position, but i have learned to act autonomously and proactively, not seeing myself only as the target of tragedies, but as a worshiper that deliver the suffering like a praise to our Lord. Teach me to suffer, teach me to cry in your presence Lord Almighty, and receive our tears like a praise to Your Name. God Bless you guys. And as i often say: Cheers from Brazil, folks! Adonai bless you all!

here, Matthew has not owned up to his sins against the Jewish people, and Simon is not willing to forgive him for that... in episode 6, when Matthew and Simon was asking Mary Magdalene to return to camp, Matthew owned up to his sins ("I'm a bad person, Mary..."). which softened Simon's heart and changed his views of Matthew...
it was beautiful how the writers tied up these episodes creating character developments...

The disciple that Thomas was asking about his "struggle" is James the Lesser. The actor himself has the partial paralysis described. Dallas noticed it when he was walking/standing and and asked if he could write it into the character of James.

Showing us how human Jesus was and he experienced life the same as we do. I could feel His exhaustion! Something that we don’t often think about, He came down to earth “fully human” to redeem us! And He appreciated the loving care of His mother just like we would. And Yeshua thanked her the dearest way.
As you said this is so human!

That was an incredible episode. Packed with examples of how His salvation meets our human flaws. But what really impacted me was mother Mary shared her birth story and her surprise at him needing her. As a mother of a grown son, I do at some point feel that he no longer needs me. But there are those moments, like Mary washing Jesus feet, that you realize that you are needed, that you still have that precious connection That is huge to my heart, knowing that I am needed and have something to offer. And I believe that Jesus wants us to understand that this is true of our relationship with him too.

Having Mary talk about cleaning off Jesus after his birth did create some heated discussions on Instagram. Tbf I’m Catholic myself but I’m not going to argue on a point that to me anyway feels pretty trivial in the grand scheme. I absolutely broke when Mary washed Jesus at the end of the day in this episode, after she’d been saying she felt Jesus hadn’t ‘needed’ her like that for a long time, and then Jesus hugs her and says ‘What would I do without my Eema?’ 😭😭😭

I bet the people didn't lineup (that's such later social idea, and not really followed today in many places), but I don't mind how they showed it since its about the beginnings of Jesus's public works. What I like is how they show Jesus's humanness in facing growing crowds and even His need to separate off and atone with God.

Yes! He loves us and wants us to seek Him. Probably the greatest example of seeking Him for healing and yet learning that God had a different plan for Him is Paul. Paul kept asking for healing and God said, "my grace is sufficient." And yet, the woman who touched his garment in faith, was healed. None of us knows what God has for us until we ask.

I feel like Mary hurries with her cleaning of Jesus at the end, despite it finally being a chance to minister to her son, she hears and sees the pain and exhaustion he is having and hurries along to make it easier for him to lie down as quickly as possible. I wonder how emotional that is for her internally . As a mother I would want to hurry so that my child could rest, but also to hold my child and comfort them for just a few moments. Or at the very least to sit by them while they fall asleep, caressing their face or just being in that moment with them.
