Thanks to everyone who has watched, commented, and had some connection to this story. It’s a deeply personal, tragic, but also fascinating period of SA history, and we did our best to do it justice with limited resources and only two days to shoot. I so appreciate each of you taking the time to share in this journey. Our hope is that it doesn’t end here, but is a stepping stone to the full length feature version. Thank you!

Obviously they were also based on traditional British light cavalry but I think you will find that the Boer War had a big influence on the structure and design of the Light Horse. It was developed in the period between the wars. In the Boer War they called themselves the Australian Horse and by the First World War they had undergone considerable changes.

@@mickeymortimer4407 It was an influence, however the tactics of the Australians in the Boer war greatly influenced the Boers. they were impressed with the ability and skill the Australians bought with them FROM Australia. It was more a home grown tactical ability and indeed during the first world war Australian forces on the Western front made up only 10% of the allied forces fighting the Germans but they inflicted 25% of the casualties ON the Germans as well as taking 25% of the total territory OFF the Germans that they allies did take in the fighting. This was home grown without the Boers and in other theartres the Australians did things like come out of the Sinai desert to take Beesheba and this had not a whit to do with the acquistion of ANY Boer tactics. It was the British who were impressed with the Boers and subsequently emulated the idea of fast hit special forces based on those tactics.

This is a fascinating period, especially from the Boer side. Churchill, Kipling, and Breaker Morant are about the only exposure commonly seen in America. It truly is a fascinating period of history full of incredible, and often grim, stories. Its underrepresentation in film is something we want to change. Funny story about Churchill, when he was captured by the Boers, my friend and business partner’s great grandfather was one of his guards for a time. He told a story of Churchill’s first night of capture, sleeping out in the wilderness shivering but refusing a blanket out of pride. Eventually he felt pity on him and forced him to take his. To this day we are known for conservative thinking, protestant Christian ethics, and an interesting affinity to rural farmliving life and livestock farming. Afrikaner boys are even now known for marksmanship, tracking and stealth. This was also evident in the 1980’s Angola border conflict.

The British thought they were in the right in bringing order to a lawless land. But they proved otherwise in what was merely an expansion of the Empire. However, the Boers, who started as the underdogs and seemed in the right, found themselves also in the wrong for their brutal colonization of South Africa. In the end both the Brits and the Boers were in the wrong ... and so they shall remain.

However, at 9.20 he pronounces "lieutenant" the American way (loo-tenant), instead of the British/French way (left-tenant) and no Brit ex-serviceman would have done that, especially in 1900. A pedantic observation I know. However, in my defence, I am a history teacher, and my class just completed a a film review today - scrutinizing the historical accuracy of a war movie (and that triviality would've received a mention).

Thanks for watching Darren! Funny story. We actually filmed most of the film doing takes with both pronouncations in case it didn't translate for an American audience. The take with the correct pronounciation in this case wasn't great, and as this was a self-funded short film made in two days, we just ran out of time to do another. My other passion in life is history, and little innacuracies like this bug me as well but so is the reality of no-budget filmmaking! Very interesting, I know this was shot with limited budget and everything. My first idea would be to draw on inspiration of starwars with Britains being very calculated and imperalistic coordinated, byrocratic (maybe even racist), and showing of the boers as opposite of that but overcoming Britains overwhelming might with the gorilla tactics. Also involve at least the Zulus in some way. Inglorious bastards would be a big big inspo for me if I would have directed it also. The interegation scene reminded me of it, and the character building of the "bastards" could be translated to the boers.

Interesting take on the Boer War. Both my grandfathers fought on the British side and I learnt a great deal about the war from them. As a history teacher in the 70's in Natal I visited most of the historical war sites, taking students on tours. I didn't need the English sub titles!

I do not do modern movies anymore. Hollywood does not exhibit my values. On the other hand, I like this idea. I would pay to go see your finished product. Good acting, good plot. Plenty of room for expansion. And truth. You might think, with a great grandfather who was a career British soldier that I would think differently. But - what else was an Irishman to do besides starve. Same with your people when the great wars rolled around, the British again used them for cannon fodder. That was the Colonial English way. They dealt military defeat, followed by poverty, which caused their ranks to swell in every land they conquered. I have long admired the Boers, and as a history buff I am familiar with the conflicts. KUDOS.

While the movies you mention are similar time periods to this film, most of the uniforms worn in those films would not be accurate for British troops circa 1901 Boer War. While there were British troops portrayed in Breaker Morant, the focus of that film was the Busheveldt Cabineers who were mostly Australian light horsemen, so they wore different uniforms than the British regulars. Shangani Patrol focused on the British South African police force in Rhodesia so their uniforms were not traditional military as they were an irregular army. Majuba Hill takes place in 1881 and at that time the British wore bright red uniforms, it was that disaster that caused the British army in Southern Africa to change to khaki-colored uniforms. But they could have used the type of uniforms worn by those portraying the British in Breaker Morant, except 1 or 2 could have worn the cowboy look as they could have been Boers working for the British.

Was soldier in the Australian Army, but have always detested the British Crown, even though I had to swear allegiance to the Crown at the time. But my family history mainly being convicts sent to Van Demans land, I have had a hatred ever since. I joined the army for a career, not to fight for Britian. I can understand why the Boers fought for their freedoms, but really they also were a conqueror of the African nation. World wide the Brits have a lot to answer for.
