I think energica has really put zero under pressure with the 20min charge it really makes motorway and long distance journey travel possible.

Yes it can. Excess heat build up with fast charging damages the battery so if there is a mechanism in place to cool the battery whilst charging no problem. Also fast charging in a scenario like a road trip consumes more chargr cycles. So chances are NewZeroland will have to replace his Energica batteries long before he will have to replace a Zero battery.
@@DaReapa As I said, the battery doesn't get hot enough to worry about. I've overheated the Zero battery countless times over the past 4+ years and the range is still the same. The way I see it, by the time my range actually starts going down, there it will be so far into the future that a new battery technology will exist and I'll swap that in. The old battery can either be recycled or reused for solar storage.

@@NewZeroland I don't have an AZ-1 and probably like the idea of one more than the reality of owning one. They are impossible not to love though! Building some kind of DIY electric car is a bucket list item for me but I'll probably start with an electric bicycle to learn some lessons first. Although it might stay a dream, a little electric AZ-1 is tons of fun to even just think about. Stay safe out there and thanks again for giving us a great perspective on electric motorcycles.

Good description of how different it is riding electric. Many new things to learn to get the most out of electrics. I've found that it can be hard to judge speed by sound. I didn't realize how much I depended on sound. It's so effortless to go faster than intended. Getting corner entry speed right can be tricky when pushing hard. And then there's riding on the street... I slowed down well before the place the police usually sit. He was there. I waved.
Still got a ticket for 65 in a 40 (good 'Merican Miles, not the French number thing).

HAHAHA, it's true. Sound can make it feel a lot faster than it is. I used to wear earplugs on my Ducati (mostly because it was obnoxiously loud) and the bike being quieter helped me go faster somehow. Maybe it felt less intense, maybe it refocused my mind away from the noise, not sure. You're right.. speed on electrics is very unique!
For me the acceleration is the reason I overspeed: it took me 3s to go to 50 on my Hornet, and now I'm at 100 with my Ribelle! I meed time to adjust, officer ;-)
@@matthieulabas I just received the Lucid Air GT I ordered last year. Never though anything could out-pull my Zero, but here it is. Pulls Hard from a standstill (0-60 in 3.0?) but pulls *Harder* from 60MPH up to crazy speeds, and this is the "slower" version!
Electric vehicles are just addictive, make everything else seem old-fashioned and slow.

The thing I really like about your analogy between smart phones and electric bikes, is the technology. The progress pulls everyone forward. Charge times are guaranteed to go down over time, and the bikes will keep getting better over time. What's not to love.

Thanks so much for that awesome comment! I totally agree. Pretty soon they'll be on par with gas bikes and the only reason to go with gas is nostalgia. Maybe that's why people want electrics to have gears and make noise.. so they don't lose what they have. But that's like putting a fake horse head in front of your car to make it feel like what you're used to (they did this) 😂

Agreed! Ok the Zero wins for peace and quiet, and the ability to be stealthy, but the Energica is still peaceful to ride. Just a little more aggressive in all respects.

Looks like Zero is working on their problem of low torque at high speeds through the deal with Exro to evaluate their coil drive technology. Sounds like they can electrically energize the motor coils in a different sequence to get the effect of higher gearing. I bet they are also working on a higher voltage battery pack to enable fast charging and better range. When they would release such upgrades is the question. If they are selling all the bikes they can make, then there's little incentive to roll out new technology, but they're starting to get a reputation for being a budget brand with cheaper components so I hope they step up their game in 2021.
Yeah totally. Zero has been making huge improvements lately, so I wouldn't be surprised if their next model is the best ever.
Personally, I gave up on buying a new Zero. Because they still don't sell directly to us, like Tesla does, and I will not tolerate a Stealership.
That is part of the reason, why I prefer to convert a gas bike to electric, or even buy & upgrade one of those sketchy but cheap Chinese bikes, from a store. No mindgames, or BS, or unnecessary middlemen & registration costs, like a Dealership.
Love your videos! I had a 2014 S at the same time as the SR/F for a couple months and had the same experience with the S feeling light at toy-like and the SR/F feeling more solid and premium. Comparing the SR/F to the Energica would be a much better comparison both price and performance wise. DC fast charging and a 21.5kw battery! Nice!
True! I feel like the acceleration and overall performance of the SR/F is really similar to Energicas. The SR/F might actually be faster to 60mph. I probably would have stuck with Zero if it weren't for the DC charging!
@@NewZeroland Funny; I've got an SR/F and a Yamaha Super Tenere 1200. The SR/F feels like a little toy in comparison with the Super Tenere, but YOW, the performance is exhilarating! Makes the big Super Tenere feel like a tired old pig. :-) I can't agree with you more about the fast charging, though. Even the 6kW charging on my SR/F makes me uninterested in long trips. DCFC would change *everything*. But we don't have the infrastructure here in 'Murica (I'm in Colorado).

@@MilesBellas dude YES! They sell Sur-rons here and I'm super tempted. I rode the DSR out to Red Rocks but felt like it's weight was a bit too much for that terrain. An electric mountain bike / dirt bike is a great idea.

IF zero get fast chargers then they will be fighting much more for the top spot .. Energica may have "higher quality build" but the price is also higher.

Thanks again, DJ! It sounds like Zero is putting a lot of effort into inproving their bikes, so I think we'll see some really sweet bikes coming from them soon. The SR/F and SR/S are right around Energica money, so I feel the same as you.. either they need to upgrade the components or drop the price a bit.
A really great attempt at describing things, but we all know the cringers and whingers just need to ride them both (and not just a test ride). Longer-term experience is the best way to really understand, and you are ideally positioned to speak on it having owned both now for some time. It really does feel like a family, and Energica are super supportive! Also, love cruising down memory lane in your Pōneke/Wellington vids...miss my Seatoun stomping ground and Makara! Here's to spring touring our NZ Energicas!

I just got my written test for motorcycle license done, one step closer to Energica.
But right now I'm thinking which gives me more fun, either an Ego or an Esse Esse 9. For Hong Kong riders there's not much place to go, basically when you can go from one corner of this land to another with full charge of the new battery you know how small here is. I admire the Ego's fairing, and I'm fine with racing seat positions (a few older friends of mind dragged me into motorcycles in the first place and they kindly let me sit on it every time to feel the bikes they own, including an R1), but the Esse Esse 9 is totally enough in terms of power and functionality, plus it looks cool in its own way.
I don't know, until I have my full license (there's a temporary license here, you don't f*** up for a year then you get the full license), I can always change my mind. But it's painful that every time I go to sleep I have to argue over myself. Remember that you said motorcycles are emotional purchases? I mean I get it now, they *ARE* emotional, you get mad over yourself when both bikes are as attractive to you and you have to find arguments to stand up for both bikes. 🤦🤦
HAHAHA hey congrats! Are there any cheap Zeros over there you could jump on to ride while you wait for your full license? I think the Zero S and DS are learner-approved in most countries. It wouldn't be as pretty, but it could be fun for the meantime. You'd also build experience and get good at riding so you don't jump on your dream bike and wreck it. Then your emotional purchase would be sad emotions lol.

@@NewZeroland I'm not sure about normal. It scares me to go out in Australia because nobody here is taking the pandemic seriously. Folks, we did "flatten the curve", but it's still a curve and it never went down, it only slowed down and will pick up speed again now that the health care systems are geared up to handle it and restrictions are being relaxed. This virus is no joke, and it's not just old people who are dying. I know everybody wants this to be over, but wanting a thing never made it come true. You have to do the hard things to make it happen. That means not acting like your and your loved ones' lives are not on the line. Because they are, and for the foreseeable future. Until there is a 100% vaccine or cure, things will not go back to the way they were before, and even then it will take time.

Glad to hear you're happy with the Energica. Hopefully Zero is listening and taking notes! I'm hoping to stick with my 17 DSR for a long time, ideally update the battery and chargers (already 2 diginows, but still not thrilled about charge times almost equal to ride time for longer trips) in a couple years once they can have at least 150% improvement over current specs. But hope to see you tearing up the track sometime before then!
I still feel the DSR is Zero's best bike, so I'm jealous of your setup! We just added 2 diginows to Jez's DSR and it's a huge improvement over stock, but I know what you mean. The 45min-1hr top ups were right on the edge of being too long. The absolute most range I got in a day was 326 miles (525km) and it was a struggle. DC charging is insane, and I hope Zero incorporates it in the future.
You are having way too much fun there. BTW, I picked up the Lightning Strike Carbon Friday. I was, and am still, so excited. It needs to be licensed and registered, but I had to take it out for a little test run on some small twisty roads very close to my home. Boy, do I have a lot to learn. You are right that riding an electric is not like riding a gas powered bike. I have to take a couple steps back and relearn how to do things that were automatic, and live without doing things that were so much a part of riding that they were reference points for everything else (like downshifting points). The roads were too small to really push the motor, but the smooth strong power made it way too easy to go right past the speed limit. And, it's so smooth, it makes you want to accelerate, more. I will have to get used to the sounds that I never heard on the Ducati. Steering was smooth and neutral, though the bike felt a little heavy and slow dropping into a bend, but that may have been me being cautious with a new, bike (my very first NEW bike). Lightning definitely still need to work on the detailing and finishing of the bike. Most details you would not notice till you get close (from 2 meters away, it looks stunning), but they need to be fixed if they want to compete with the likes of Energica. When I was on the bike, I did not think about this, but just about how much fun I was having., Hopefully, this week, I get it all licensed and legal and take it for a longer, bigger roads, ride. Then, finding the place to put my video camera mount.

Well, after watching some of your videos about the Energica, i will definitely order a 21.5 Eva Ribelle next year! I'm only 22, but we have to change our way of travel! And I think that an 21.5 kwh battery in an electric motorcycle is enough for me! I made the decision for the energica (an not a zero) because of the lack of fast charging! Here in Germany we have now a well build up network of CCS fast charging stations, so it will be possible to make long way journeys across the country!

spot on changing the oil , id do the same. used to do outboard gearboxes too . If a magnet could be placed in a location of the gearbox it would solve the loose metal issue 99%
Nice! Yep the bike has little magnetic drain plugs and they collected quite a bit of stuff.
Here in Brazil there is the Voltz EVS, it is an urban electric bike, compared to a 160cc. It seems to be great, when the pandemic is over I will go to São Paulo for a test ride. It is a motorcycle that can actually replace a gasoline 160cc. And it’s not that expensive. The future is electric and I was super surprised to see something like this in Brazil, I thought that only in the year 3509 we would see electric bikes here. It will definitely be my next bike.

I wouldn't say the EV experience is completely different from ICE, but it is certainly very different. Especially not so different with bikes, because for some reason little things like getting soaked, freezing fingers and roasted buns are just part of the experience, even though we would never put up with any of that in any other circumstances. It's weird that on a bike I don't even really think about it, but won't put up with it anywhere else. But it's the same regardless of the source of motivation that the bike becomes part of you and you become part if the environment. It's almost a religious experience. For me making the bike electric makes the experience more pure, not less so. I still enjoy the challenge of the clutch and shifting and twitchy throttle of an ICE bike, but I don't miss it, either.
But seriously, nothing I've ever ridden handles like my Zero. It feels like a dirt bike with street tires and the power of a literbike without the mass and inertia of that engine. Nope, sorry, you may get more adrenaline pumping with an ICE superbike, but there's no way you're having as much fun.
Some people say that it's more fun going slower in a car that you can really wring out than going faster in a high performance car. I disagree. And for the same reason, I think an electric motorcycle is more fun. Because there's a lot less effort wasted on just keeping the thing going and between the ditches and a lot more pleasure concentrating on what really matters: body position, hitting the perfect apex, hearing the birds singing in the meadow or the scent of the roadside flowers instead of fuel, lube and exhaust.
The charging time is the one fatal issues with Zeros, though. My Tesla almost never makes me wait when I'm road tripping. In fact, it's usually done charging before I'm done eating or using the bathroom & stretching or whatever. But even with my new charging setup, my Zero is still going to make me plan more carefully and wait just that smidgen too long to be carefree and natural. DC charging is the answer. And for cars, 50 kW doesn't cut it, either. 100 kW is the absolute lowest speed any car should be able to charge, even commuter "city cars", but most of the car companies still are not serious about EVs and are deliberately dragging their feet on making EVs that can completely replace any equivalent ICE vehicle. "But consumers don't really want or need that"... yeah, right, and I'll buy that farmland in the Everglades, too. 🙄
Hahaha, EPIC comment as usual, Mark! I agree 100%. I'd say the giant leap from Zero's stock charging speed to the diginows feels as substantial as going from diginows to DC charging. I did a road trip with my wife (who was riding the Hyosung 250) and when she'd stop for gas, I'd charge up the Energica. She'd finish fueling up, ride over to me, send some texts / read some emails, and it would already be time to go again. The downside of DC charging is that there isn't enough time to eat lunch hahaha. On quite a few occasions I'd have Leafs queuing up waiting for the station to be free, so I had to either stay by the bike or rush back as soon as it finished. One top-up was only 7 minutes! It's crazy, but it definitely allows you to spend more time on the road enjoying the sights :)
I was surprised when I took the body panels off of my Energica Ego that all of it is carbon fiber, even the painted stuff!

New Zero owner here. Love my bike, but you're exactly right. I'm intrigued by Energica now thanks to you and want to learn more about them. The Zero customer experience has been lackluster... Honestly I've had more engagement from deals on Craigslist than I did with Zero or the dealership....
Oooo congrats on the new bike! This is actually a video I'm planning on revisiting. Now that I've ridden the Energica 6000 miles and had a chance to get to know it more, I've found that the Zero is still my bike of choice (if my wife isn't riding it). For commutes to work, rides into the city, and even attacking the twisties, the Zero is still a more enjoyable experience. Unless you're on a road trip or trackday everyday, the Ego is a struggle. You did good, man. Really every decision to go electric is a good one :D
@@NewZeroland thanks for the reply! Yeah definitely no regrets, it's super fun and I love commuting around town on it and taking it out to the mountains. But you're exactly right with that extra 10% that's missing and leaves you wanting just a little bit more. Mainly just being able to take it out on a road trip without it feeling like a significant endeavor of planning around charge times and locations. Just ordered an Elcon fast charger so we'll see, still learning what all I can do with my new FX!

You always manage to persuade me to go bigger damn you is the energica really worth it though compared to my SRF I been looking at the new energica 21kw versions only thing that deters me is the weight but I have had petrol 1200 tourers is the weight better managed? Or does the energica feel just as heavy
Haha it really comes down to your location. If you have a ton of DC charging stations around, the Energica is king. If you have mostly AC, the SR/F is your best choice. But nah the weight in the new bikes feels great, especially the Eva Ribelle 😁

Oh good analogy with camera's. The thing is canon has been behind for several years now only very recently picking up on Sony and fujifilm. But still most award winning pictures are taken with canon, even today. It's what you do with it that really counts. That and obviously fujifilm and zero are superior to any other brands 😂

Did you fill all connectors with Dielectric grease? I'm worried about riding any bike in the rain, even though I would still want to do it, and would still enjoy it. I was a fan of rain riding, before that Fortnine video. I really like the experience and the challenge. And I'm sick of missing courier days, because of the weather.
Naah, most of the connectors are hidden really well under the fairings, and everything that's exposed looks waterproof. Nothin to worry about 😎👍

CCS isn't available in the places I want to ride motorcycles (rural). I'm actually leaving for a cross-USA trip in a couple weeks on my Zero with a three-in-the-pan digiNow setup. There are entire states I'll be passing through without a single CCS or Chademo charger (North Dakota) that makes road tripping on an Energica simply not possible. The Zero is the only option.
With the power tank, 10kW of charging and the most efficient e-moto drivetrain there is literally no other bike that can do the 200-300+ rural miles per day I need to do. Two-up with my daughter and camping gear. The local availability of infrastructure makes a huge difference, and the US is a really big place. Tune in to my channel to see more info coming.
And yes I get fast charging with my CCS capable Ford Focus Electric and my 250 kW capable Model 3. I'm a big fan of the growing Electrify America network and my Ford was the first public vehicle to charge at the inaugural opening of the first 350kW EA fast chargers.

Our vehicles are improving too fast and the infrastructure can't keep up, so the choice of bike becomes dependent on location. I'm glad there were aftermarket fast charging options for Zeros. And I'll be honest, as awesome as DC charging is, it's stupid expensive. So you might still have the right idea. Anyway I can't wait to see how your trip goes! Have fun out there :D

I leased an FFE from 2014-2017. Loved that car. I didn’t have DC on it, but it was so quiet! My family could have whispered conversations at highway speeds. No road noise. Glorious.

I've never rode an Energica but I've sat on one and they are HEAVY. I'm sure the weight goes away when you ride.

Yep! Bought in California and shipped over. The registration process wasn't too hard because it's a production bike. The only pain is paying GST on it 😭

So after I heard you talk about the ego I looked into it. A standard 2020 zero sr/s I can get for $18K. I found a 2018 ego with 300 miles for $16K. But here in the US you have to have auto insurance and for the same coverage I have on my 2013 BMW F800GS it is $989 a year for the ego and $665 for the zero.... My bmw only costs me $200 a year.. I like to try to find performance vehicles without the insurance companies Premium prices.. you said that the zero is quite quick off the like in comparison to the ego but lacks top speed but for most of my riding I don't need that top speed, the max my gs went was 125 mph if you had a huge stretch and street tires.. I have to say when I saw the sr in person compared to the sr/f the sr looks cheap with the skinny tires and single disk up front.. the sr/f looks pretty good quality with the fat tires and dual disks. After seeing them side by side I didn't even want to try the sr.. So my question is do you have to have insurance over there and is there a huge price difference between the bikes.. the ego and the sr
Yep we have to have insurance here too and I definitely have full coverage. The Energica is higher because it's worth more than the Zero, but insurance works differently in NZ. It's a mixture of power to weight and then the value. I actually still like my old SR more than the SR/F. It has all of the fun without the weight. The only reason I went with Energica was charging. NZ has DC stations everywhere and the charging speed is nuts. If you mostly have AC around you, a Zero makes more sense.
There are two things that keep nagging at me, (1) the required chain maintenance because I ride the whole year round even in winters when the roads are salt strewn to prevent icing up and (2) the battery warranty, Zero gives 5 years and Energica only gives 3 years. I guess these are pretty expensive to replace and I would then love the additional 2 years that Zero gives. I read somewhere that fast charging facility which Energica provides reduces the life of the battery.
That 5 year Zero warranty is just marketing. No gas bike manufacturer has more than 3 year warranties, and really all these batteries are bulletproof nowadays. Chain maintenance is definitely a pain, but snapping a belt is way more annoying. The amount of gravel roads I went on in the last few weeks would have been impossible on a belt-drive Zero. That said, I still think the older / lighter Zeros are faster in most situations. They're so nimble and fun! It comes down to what you need the bike for, and everybody's needs are different.
zero needs to up-grade its charging ability....may-be a upgrade kit?
They would need to completely redesign their battery packs to support higher voltage, but maybe that's coming! I saw something about a new motor, so maybe their future tech will support faster charging too.
@@NewZeroland something that the community seems to have forgotten, Zero came out with DC charging in 2012. But then couldn't make it work because they can't build a bike that's properly isolated. There's no redesign needed. They would DC charge today, if they could do quality control. But they can't.

@@gasdive oh yeah, I remember seeing those. The battery cases still have the cutouts for the CHAdeMO ports. I heard it was because most stations' voltage didn't go low enough, but that's probably only for CCS. The isolation issue sounds about right :\
@@NewZeroland yeah that was the excuse. Of the approximately 200 CHAdeMO chargers, 9 of them don't meet the voltage standards. Only one 50 kW charger doesn't. HFR1-50B9. Also some portable chargers don't and some 90 kW Swiss chargers that are no longer made didn't.
Tritium, one of the largest manufacturers said specifically that the 96v nominal Zero would work fine. They supply veefill chargers to ChargeNet NZ

I saw a fan in the charging port area. It looks like the fan is used to cool the charging area/batteries. If it is raining and you decide to charge your Energica bike, if the rain falls on the fan area, is that bad? Is charging in the rain ok or not advised?
I'm assuming that fan is waterproof, but the fan is also only for AC charging (usually at home, to just to cool the charger). When it's DC charging the fan doesn't run because all the energy is going straight to the battery.
I have my Eva parked outside (in the rain) while @ work, charging on 203V (Europe). No problem at all.

I’ve never gotten tired of hearing my Zero. I mean, it kinda fades from consciousness anyway, because you’re used to it and your attention is really on the traffic and the road. But when I first get on and am going for a pleasure ride, the motor sound and lack of engine noise is a definite huge PLUS.
I’m scheduled to demo a Energica in 2 days and hoping to demo a zero the same day from another dealer (2 attempts but haven’t called me back, as opposed to Energica that called me back within an hour). Been wanting to buy a long range electric moto for the past 3 years and feel that the time has come to do it. I’ve narrowed it down to 3 Enérgicas and 3 Zeros. (SS9, Eva Ribelle, Ego) & (SR/S, SR/F, SR)
Been riding since ‘91, starting on a GSXR400, then a CBR600, an electric moto (limited to 60mph), and currently on an FZ-07.
I’m 5’7, 140lbs and love smaller, lighter bikes with a punch. I loved my 400’s nimbleness, but lacked power. Loved my 600’s speed, but it lacked torque. Loved my electric as it was practically maintenance free and nearly free to “fill up”, but lacked range and refilled slowly (110v), and I love my FZ07 for being a good combination of what I love about my previous 3 bikes (nimble, quick/fast, and not to expensive) but I don’t love the maintenance (who does), it isn’t the best looking bike, (not ugly either) and isn’t the fastest but these days, I’m good staying under 125mph. I own a Performance Tesla, so I’ve been bit by the electric bug and I’m intoxicated with instant torque and I want that in my bike as well (who wouldn’t).
My concerns with owning an electric bike are: range (everyone’s main concern) time to charge (everyone’s second concern), and noise (too much or lack of- can’t make everyone happy lol) Like the sound of the Energica, but there’s something to be said for silence too, and I wonder if the gear whine gets old after a long roll on the freeway)
I’m leaning a little towards the Energica for reasons you’ve stated in your video: fast charge capable, good range, good build quality, however, I do like the Zero for being quieter, lighter, & quicker. I prefer the looks of the Energica but the slightly lower price of the Zero. Both are great bikes in their own right.
I can buy a demo SS9 (non plus for ~$16,000) or a used Ego for ~$18,500). Unfortunately, there aren’t any EVA Ribelle’s for sakle in my area, which is the bike I really wanted of the three, but I’ll get a good idea with my demo ride.
Looking to share my experience with you all after my demo ride- if it’s love at first twist, I may take one home! Really want to ride a Zero though before deciding as I know those are also great bikes.
I’d love to hear from those who have ridden both. Given my size, type of bikes I like, type of riding I do (weekend mountain twisties), I feel that either could work as long as I’m able to keep up with my two riding buddies in the hills (they each have liter bikes).
Love my 400lb 689 FZ-07 and need an electric that can still hit the twisties in a similar way without losing power when the juice gets low and is nimble enough to flick around and corner confidently. Sorry for the long post - thanks for reading!
Follow up post-test ride comment as promised! So I test rode the 13.4 SS9 & 13.4 EGO, then called a local Zero dealer and arranged to test ride an SR/F afterwards the same day. Laurence from Enérgica asked me to let him know how my demo ride went and for feedback. After sharing that the bike i really wanted to test ride was the Eva, which was not available to demo in my area, he arranged to have an Eva and Eva Ribelle brought to my home to test ride later that week. I was completely surprised that they would offer to do that. Laurence and Stefano from Enérgica brought the bikes and about 3 minutes into riding the Eva Ribelle, I knew I found the right bike and would be buying one.
I absolutely LOVED it. I placed my order that week and am now expecting delivery just a few weeks from now!
The sound is a large part of why I love the bike so much. The Zero was too quiet for a bike that fast, and if we lived in a world that didn’t have pedestrians stepping off curbs in front of us, or cars that didn’t cross into our lanes, then I would be all for silent bikes, but Enérgica’s not only sound cool, (reminds me of a jet fighter) but it turns heads, and not for the hey look at me factor, but the added safety factor of creating awareness that I’m traveling in that area. Ultimately, one cannot rely on sound alone to create awareness for those around you, but I’ll take every advantage available to be not only seen but heard.
Once above a certain speed, the wind overtakes the sound of gears and chain anyways. I do love the sound though as it gives the bike unique character that is unmistakably electric ⚡️ 💨

I had a iPhone 5s also. I upgrade last month because my carrier said it’s going to be obsolete. I think the energica is so heavy, it effects range.
That sucks! The 5S was great. And you're right about the weight affecting the range. At higher speed though, the Ego's aerodynamics help even it out.
Can energica give update to increase horsepower by software update like Tesla ?
I'm sure it's possible. The motor and controller are the same in the new bikes and they have more power, so it could just be some tuning changes.

I really don't get this trend to make electric bike as similar as possible to petrol ones. this Emulo-something is a bit ridiculous. I mean it's not like petrol bikes are forbidden... If you want every aspects of a petrol bike and none of an electric one... maybe juste buy a petrol bike !

You made a very wise decision getting this. I remember watching your video a year ago about how you were about to order a lightning strike (which, you're actually only one of the single or very few videos talking about it). But I read an article dating in March of 2020 that the lightning strike is actually really bad... So you dodged a bullet.
And the SR/S not having fast DC charging yet, I think you made a wise decision to stick with your one and only zero sr.

I'm curious how the energica handles extended interstate riding. My commute is about 30 miles (about 50 km) and my average speed is about 80 mph (160 kmh) . I worry switching to electric about the bmc turning down the power due to heat buildup. I don't hear about zeros having that issue, and any bike I get (zero/energica/lightning) would need to be able to do half hour sprints as it would be my primary commute vehicle year round.
I've been commuting 35 miles on my Eva for about 2yrs. It is excellent for the freeway. Haven't had any negative experiences with traffic that I hadn't already gone through on my gas bike. Cars just don't pay attention.
You ride at 100mph for the full 30 miles?? That's a really short commute lol.. in Mexico, right? I feel like a Zero would struggle with that. There's peak power and sustained power, and holding it wide open for even 10 minutes would either overheat a Zero or start cutting power to prevent overheating. For that specific situation, an Energica would be perfect.
Just to toss in a little extra detail, I'm in California riding between Riverside and Irvine. Thanks to HOV lanes and splitting I average about 60mph. On a clear day the bike has no complaints about going 80+ for a good stretch. Technically I can do the round trip on a single charge, but there are L2s at my office, so I usually give it an hour just to avoid having to be conservative on the ride home.

I also have access to level 2 charges at work, so range isn't as big of a concern. Mostly like you said sustained power is my worry.
The newer Zeros probably wouldn't have an issue with that kinda speed, but the newer Zeros are similarly priced to Energicas, so it's hard to compare when the quality is so much higher.

I know this video from 2020 but you were ordered Lİghtning and then no videos about your new lightning motorcycle. So what happend make you decide to buy a Energica? I don't understand.
I talked about that in.. I think the video before this one.. or the video before that. Basically, I bought the Ego just to fill the gap of time while I waited for the Lightning to be ready. I was waiting for the next model, the Lightning Strike R, and then covid hit. Production slowed down and I also wasn't able to fly back to California to test ride it when it was finished. In the end I got my deposit back and decided to wait, because I still can't fly to California until next year. Luckily the Energica is amazing :D

The biggest problem I have with the Energica is just the sheer weight and width of the thing. I really wanted an electric KLR650, and that's what my DSR basically is.
I totally agree. Nobody else makes a bike like that, and I really feel like the DSR is Zero's best bike! The FX is almost an Alta (RIP) and the SR/F is almost an Eva.. but the DSR stands alone :)
@@NewZeroland I'm glad you like your Energica. You gotta ride your own ride! I don't actually ride the DSR off-road pretty much ever, but the DSR is *amazing* in traffic, because it's so tall and narrow, and the Zero S-platform is so flickable.
Zero are in danger of doing a Nokia if they don't bring in DC fast charging urgently. Nokia once ruled the mobile phone market and made the best products but look what happened to them. I'd pick an esse esse 9+ over a SRF just for the DC charging capability alone.

I'm waiting for a zero with DC fast charge (and around £15k) and... well.... a slightly less ugly design. The new Energica looks awesome but that price is getting a little much works out around minimum £20k. Would love one, but can't quite afford it yet.

Just build custom electric motorcycles is the way to go imo. You can build a R6 looking bike for 7k equivalents specs you the highest end Zero, but looks better. All about building custom bikes is the way to go. Massive community on building these electric motorcycles. Only issue is charging. If you buy proper batteries you can get it to charge much faster. But go get 20 min charging is next level.

NewZeroland if you want the same spec motor I would recommend going for a belt driven setup to get max torque and top end speed without spending the big bucks. Check out Alibaba.com. They sell 38kw +motors there. Everyone in the custom build community buys them there. In fact you can buy a base model electric motorcycle with the nice frame you want and then buy the parts to build your own. Or you can buy an existing bike like an R6 and convert it with the parts from that site. There are a lot of UA-camrs now buying and building bikes from scratch or they do a conversion. The motor hub is the easy way to do things but if you want pure torque and power I would go for a belt driven system. My friend has a motor hub bike that can beat some zeros. But motor hubs are like super chargers and belt driven system are like turbo kits. One is more efficient then the other

But now I've been ruined by Energica's 107kW motor lol. Gotta have that massive power at high speed!
NewZeroland I’ve seen 240kw motors on Alibaba lol. But those were meant for cars. But in theory it could be used on a custom motorcycle. Check them out and check out the custom bike building community for these electric vehicles. Also if you run in a 96v system or higher system the bike will go a lot faster for less size motor but will eat more batteries. I’m running on a 72v system why I have better range.
NewZeroland a 50kw motor on Alibaba cost about 2k. A 135kw motor cost about 15k. If you were to build a custom bike. On a belt or chain system running on a water cooled system. These prices include the controller. Prices in USD

I enjoyed watching this video, as I enjoyed watching your other videos. You seem to be a pioneer in New Zealand and I admire you truly for that.
With 57 years I'm a late entrant for motorcycling. I own a Zero SR/F Premium with the additional rapid charger (in total 12 kW charging).
To a degree It's as you said: I feel like the Sony-camera-owner in your comparison and I'd be happier if a pioneer like you had bought a Zero again. I would feel more confirmed in my decision.
It is now about a year since I started to think about buying an electric motorcycle. I new that Energica existed but thought them to be out of my price range. I'm not quite sure, may be they lowered the price since then. However, I did not follow the development of the Energicas but focused on the Zero SR/F. Last November I bought the SR/F Premium (at that time without the rapid charger) as a demo-bike with about 2.3k miles on it for almost 19k CHF (~ 20k US$), which was an impressive discount as the prices in Switzerland are much higher than in the US.
As a new learner I waited for spring and have ridden ~4k miles since April.
I've started to wonder if my decision for the SR/F was wrong. Thinking it all through I come to the conclusion, that for my situation the SR/F still holds:
a) As I live in a rented flat with no garage and no parking lot with a charging possibility the only way I can charge at home is with AC charging (from a strong outlet of my flat with extension cord through my window, which gives me ~9 kW). The housemates have agreed that I can put the bike for a short time to charge it at a place where no bike should be placed usually. The slow AC charging of an Energica would take too long for that.
b) Noise (engine sound if you want to put it that way) - or better the absence of it - is very important for me. In fact it was one of the reasons why I did not buy an ICE earlier in my life.
c) I don't need the power for race tracks or similar (at least not until now 😉). Only if I have a passenger with me, I ride in Street mode, otherwise ECO is enough for me. At some point I will try the Sports mode but I still wait with it until I'm really experienced enough. However, I like to have enough power in order to be able to pass a slow car quickly enough. I even think less power were enough for me. But then I wanted the ABS, Corner ABS und of course traction control for safety reasons.
d) In consequence of c) the air cooled system of the SR/F does not matter but comes with easier/cheaper maintenance.
I certainly agree that fast DC charging would make me happy if the SR/F also had it, at times when I ride a lot at the same day (250 miles the most up to now). How much strain it gives to the battery is another question which probably is not answered definitively yet.
I envy you regarding feeling as treated as part of a family by the manufacturer. I had no big issues with my SR/F yet. However, responding times from Zero (if responded at all) did not give me that feeling yet …
All in all I'm very happy with my SR/F. Riding it makes so much fun and I'm so happy that I was courageous enough to spend so much money on a hobby that I was not sure if it could make me happy.

Its all about what you need it for at this point .. IF you need to go on longer trips then the Energica is a better choice.
BUT if you only need to go within your range of the battery then Zero surely could be better.
People say lot about quality, that Energica is much better but that doesn't mean Zero is bad.
I see it more like Energica needs higher quality as they can go further faster and therefore need to be able to handle more strain etc.
As for charging at home I don't see much competition as homecharging usually is more than 8-10 hrs and then both are fast enough. Fast chargers are only needed for longer trips.
As for your decision for the Zero believe me its not a wrong choice .. and will never be a wrong choice .. How can cleaner be worse???¿¿¿
Thanks for the super detailed comment! You made the right choice for you and that's all that matters. The SR/F is sweet, and it's crazy powerful. Definitely as fast as my Energica. So it comes down to your use for it. Like DJ said, if you're commuting daily, Zeros are better. If the charging infrastructure around you is all AC, the Zero is better. I'm surrounded by DC so my only option was an Energica. I do have a question though.. how are you charging at 9kW at home??
Oh - I had to correct a terrible mistake: My bike had 2.3k on it when I bought it, NOT 23k ...
@@NewZeroland As in probably most Swiss households we have access to three-phase-current which is used for example for oven, washing machine and dryer. It is 3x400V/16A. The socket is a T25 which is a Swiss Norm, similar to the CEE16 norm. I use it together with a JuicBooster2 (JB2) (en.juice-world.com/juice-booster). For the JB2 there are several adapters available, you can see some of them if you scroll down the website. I got Type2, CEE32, CEE16, T25, T13. As soon as I'm allowed to ride outside of Switzerland (after the driving tests) I'll buy at least the adapter for Germany (Schuko), may be for UK and France.
As household outlets are not thought for a constant usage at the max current for longer time, the JB2 recognizes by its intelligent adapter what type of socket is used and reduces the current to ~80% in order to prevent overheating the socket/system. It's also possible to manually reduce the current. Right now for example I'm charging my SR/F with only ~4kW at home. Because it is early Saturday morning, the other housemates still sleeping so they are not disturbed if the bike stands a bit longer at the place. Also I'm not in a hurry to have the battery fully charged and I guess the battery is under less strain than with faster charging. On a busy evening I would charge with the full ~9kW in order to not disturb the housemates too long.
Although I must say that the housemates are very friendly/interested regarding the SR/F. I asked every of the 12 tenant parties if they would allow me to put the SR/F for a short time at the particular place in order to charge it; I guess that's why. Most of them were amazed and pleased that I asked them beforehand.
I use the SR/F primarily for fun in the free time, only sometimes for commuting. In Switzerland we have many DC fastcharging stations. There is even one about 1km away from where I life. So - for longer trips I'd be happy to have even faster charging than 12kW. However, in my situation I need fast enough AC charging at home. Not being able to charge at home was no option. It would suck, after coming home from a ride: a) Not being able to charge at the public station because it is occupied or not working. b) have to wait at the station until it's charged (even if it is only 20 Min.) or leaving the bike there and catching it after it is charged. c) ~60% more expensive compared to charging at low tariff at night and weekends.
For the JB2 I need a topcase if I want to charge during a ride - this is definitively a disadvantage. However, as in Switzerland most (I'd say ~80%) Type2 stations do NOT come with an attached cable, I'd need a topcase for a simple Type2 cable (rather bulky because 3 phase) anyway. I wonder how long my SR/F will last, what the E-motorcycle- and charging situation is at the EOL (end-of-life) of the SR/F and if can afford another E-Motorcycle at that point ...

I had a random thought while watching this video. Where is a "How to wash your Zero" video? If you had mud on your DSR motor how would you wash it?

@@NewZeroland Had to drive home in the rain the other day and I didn't like the sound I was hearing but the bike was fine and no issues though I get why traction control is a common request now. I noticed some mud on the motor and heatsync on the crontroller. I was wondering if I should use a soft bristle brush maybe?
The sound is probably just your belt. When it gets wet it has a deeper warble sound haha. Nothin to worry about. Yeah using a brush on the motor fins is a good idea!

Oh nice! Nope, I actually really like the sound. It's a very different bike from the Zero though. I prefer a Zero for commuting and riding around town because of how lightweight and quiet it is, but the long distance abilities of the Energica are amazing.

Yes, those fellow Zero owners making overly brand-loyal excuses on charge times are just hurt. Some people get funny about that stuff, but they should be happy that Energica are pushing the competition forward.
I (and you, clearly) love what Zero have done, but you just can't argue with charge times.
Zero and slow/fast AC charging doubtlessly works for a large number of bikers, but DC just transforms ownership. I'm really staying patient while I have my DSR and my 90,000 mile (all my miles) Honda CBF1000 is holding on. I don't really want to buy another petrol bike, but I have to consider longer touring and riding with fellow bikers on biking holidays.
I just don't get the obsession with gears. They're a necessary evil because of the physics of an internal combustion engine, but why on Earth would you add back that complexity unnecessarily back onto an electric bike?
I think for some bikers, it's an ego thing. That ability to change gear manually makes them super-human! 😁

It's hard to convince people electric is the way to go.. but without us early adopters, it wouldn't get anywhere! While everyone else waits for the right time to buy, we'll be happily riding our electrics for years 😎

The more I see you on your Energica, the more I want one. Too bad there's almost no lvl 3 charging stations anywhere near me...or a dealer. I would hate my SR/F right now if I didn't have a dealer near me....I've had so many problems with it. I'm pretty turned off of the whole zero experience at this point, including the zero community boasting about being so great at redlights, most likely going back to gas for the next decade until it makes sense to own an electric bike (if it even makes sense by then).
Aw maaaan! Sorry to hear that, bro. I understand though. Quite a few friends have had similar experiences and went back to gas, and I can't blame em. Road trips are still so much easier, and it's stuff we can work on ourselves, for the most part. I'm hoping it's one of those cases where "the Zero breaks down a lot, so I'm glad I have a dealer" and "the Energica never breaks down so I'm ok without a dealer"... because my closest dealer is in another country across an ocean lol.
@@NewZeroland hopefully your energica never breaks down! My zero has yet to break down, but i keep having warranty issues which is annoying. That was actually part of the reason why I bought the SR/F in the first place...my last bike kept having issues.
I absolutely love electric bikes. but with the charging infrastructure the way it is around me, having a 20k commuter bike just feels wrong. I wasn't thinking with my head when I bought it, I had just missed my victory empulse so much.

@@Amnpaterson aw man! Well the SR/F is still a badass machine. People still stop me to chat about my Zero SR, as plain as it looks, just because it's different. My dream is Zero sees your comments on charging, and then fabricates a new faster charger for all the older Zero SRs.... I too want a 20 minute charge time... (I just don't want to have to buy a whole new motorcyle to get it...)
I agree, but I don't think it'd work. Even if they made a DC/DC converter to get the voltage up over 200V, and then disabled the 1C limit, the battery would probably overheat 😕 Zero would need a whole new design with better cooling vents or something.
@@NewZeroland My hope is all e-moto companies get on board with "modular" design. So that every 10 years I can go back and get an updated battery/charger (which doubles my range/cuts charge time in half) but keep my current motorcycle....
How old will I sound... While I love the DC charging capability of the Energica, I find it to be too... Noisy! I prefer hearing to being heard. Also, 280+kg... Ouch.
Also, how do their respective regenerative braking compare? From what you say, Energica's seems to be the strongest.
I feel ya, Francis. If Zero had DC charging and higher-end components and similar regen strength.. and Energica styling, I'd be all over it. I still prefer the sound of a Zero, for sure.

Is this Energica 21 battery? That's a huge difference from Zero.
Nope, this is the 13.4, so my range isn't as good as Zeros but the charging is actually faster than the 21.5 battery.
yeah, it's about 300 pounds difference from zero, apparently.

NewZeroland I have a Nissan leaf, it was more expensive than a petrol car but I did feel I was getting better value for my money than you get by buying one of those electric motorbikes.
David Allen interesting because in SoCal, I see pro owned Model S’s selling for less than what I’m paying for my Enérgica Eva Ribelle.. and I already have a Performance Model S.. and as I’m a motorcyclist first and an electric vehicle fan second, I’ve found myself riding my Yamaha 99/100 times, but now, with the Enérgica Ribelle, I can combine my two favorite things; motorcycles and electric propulsion and when my wife asked me.. would I rather have a second Tesla, or an electric motorcycle, the answer was very easy. I said electric motorcycle of course! The value is in what I will actually use and get more enjoyment out of, and while I love Tesla’s, I really really really love Enérgica’s.. I literally wake up remembering dreaming of riding an Enérgica, and spend hours watching videos of people riding their Enérgica’s and reading about their road trips.. I don’t do any of that with Tesla’s.. like Sam once said, motorcycling is like being in the movie as opposed to watching the movie.
Buying an Enérgica was an easy decision and I would pay twice as much for a Ribelle than I would for a Tesla. While they are, by far, the best automobile ever produced, it’s still not a motorcycle.. and what a shame that they don’t produce one or at least collaborate with a motorcycle manufacturer to supply the battery or controller or software.. that’s where Enérgica shines.
They are the Tesla of two wheels for me, and more so, as they build race specific bikes, piloted by some of the finest riders in the world on the finest tracks.. that’s exciting to me and while Elon has contributed to the world in so many ways, the family of engineers and officers and riders at Enérgica are so much more meaningful to me as they understand the passion and are in the riders seat with us. I really honestly do feel part of something amazing when Enérgica personally welcomes each of its owners to the family. 🇮🇹+⚡️+❤️=🏍
Only 3 years or 50000km warranty on the Energica battery, that's where Zero has the unquestionable lead
I wouldn't call an extra 2 years an unquestionable lead. A 3 year warranty is really good for any bike. My Ducati only had a 2 year warranty.
@@NewZeroland it's a forty percent longer warranty plus unlimited km/miles. The 50000km cap would end the warranty after 2 years for me. But i'm driving it everyday so there are a lot of people who wouldn't be bothered by this.
But i'd like to see how much the battery of an Energica will heat up while fast charging since this might cut the batterylife short.
I can confirm the battery doesn't get hot and doesn't seem to care about fast charging. In my personal situation where there aren't any dealers or service centers for Zero OR Energica, the warranty on my Zero hasn't helped at all, so not having a long one doesn't bother me. I know this isn't the case for a lot of people, but I wouldn't say that's a reason to buy a bike.

Yeah true. The problem is that DC charging requires high voltage, and high voltage is usually only in high performance stuff. A fast charging, light weight bikes would be the best!
